76  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Just Games on: November 18, 2008, 02:36:02 PM
I think there is a difference between announcing your product and just plain spam!
Anyway this looks very sketchy to me. What makes your game fun? Why is it special?

Edit: Removed the emoticon.

Maybe a section for learning Batch.
79  Other Software / Developer's Corner / Re: If and when can you be sued for open source? Donationware? on: November 02, 2008, 05:57:49 PM
I found this.
Quote
The typical open source project is a grass-roots effort that contains contributions from many people. This method of development can be worrisome from an intellectual property standpoint because it creates multiple opportunities for contributors to introduce infringing code and makes it almost impossible to audit the entire code base. The risks of this development process are largely borne by the licensees. Contributors do not vouch for the cleanliness of the code they contribute to the project; in fact, the opposite is true -- the standard open source license is designed to be very protective of the contributor. The typical license form does not include any intellectual property representations, warranties or indemnities in favor of the licensee; it contains a broad disclaimer of all warranties that benefits the licensor/contributors.
Even if such representations and warranties or indemnity obligations existed in open source license agreements, it would be difficult if not impossible to recover against the licensor for having licensed infringing code. Many of the most prominent open source projects appear to be owned by thinly-capitalized non-profit entities that do not have the financial wherewithal in most cases to answer for a massive intellectual property infringement suit.
I suppose everything there is fairly obvious but I think it kind of sums up the issue very nicely.

No, I'm not looking for legal advice. Wink I was just curious that's all. It seemed like an interesting topic.
81  Other Software / Developer's Corner / If and when can you be sued for open source? Donationware? on: October 29, 2008, 10:04:23 PM
I have heard allot of conflicting reports about the legal status of open-source software. If you create something that infringes a copyright but distribute it as open source can you be sued and how badly? I know I'm wrong about this but I want some clarification. It seems to me that since you are not making money off of it theres not much the company can sue you for. Where does Donationware fit in to all this?
82  Other Software / Developer's Corner / Re: Lets talk about GUIs. on: October 23, 2008, 02:39:53 AM
I guess this thread should be changed to - Lets NOT talk about GUIs.  cheesy
83  Other Software / Developer's Corner / Lets talk about GUIs. on: October 20, 2008, 11:22:03 AM
Forget languages for a second, lets talk about GUI packages. It was the thing that always excited me the most about software development. There is something very satisfying about making and using a smooth and simple GUI and I have to marvel at the developers ingenuity. I have tried quite a few times to start learning GUI's of different types ( Tkinter, swing, QT, Wx ), but my progress has always been stunted by the lack of learning tools in this area. If you want to learn a language there are countless books to teach you the basics but when learning GUI packages the support always falls short on interesting material. Usually the packages come with a few basic examples and tutorials but its never really enough to get me off the ground. I guess its because for more advanced stuff they expect you to buy a builder, but a poor guy like me who wants and expects to be able to design it manually gets left to dust.
Please tell me about your experiences. Maybe you can share something to help me get out of this annoying mess.

I also have this problem and I don't use an AV program.
85  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: What Sports Do You Participate In? on: September 25, 2008, 08:00:53 PM
What's the definition of sports? Isn't boules a game and cycling an activity? Phil is  undecided

That's a subject of much debate, but I'm more geared towards hearing about participation in the "pure" sports. ie: things that get your heart rate up for sustained periods of time or spike your heart rate to it's max like in sprints.

This isn't actually a random question, I have something big in the works that is related.....However, it's still far off.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
Sports is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.

I love that definition.

Anyway, I do Basketball and Swimming.

Step 1: Download the file.
Step 2: Download Media Player Classic
Step 3: Open the file in Media Player.
87  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Does TweakMASTER Pro really work? on: September 19, 2008, 10:36:04 AM
For those of you who don't know what it is.
http://www.tweakmaster.com/

All of these web optimizers seem kind of shady to me.
Do you really need to pay for a web optimizer when there are so many free ones?
From what I am reading, the only web accelerator which does anything substantial is the Google Web Accelerator.
88  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Please Help Me "Transition" to Internet Exploder...err Explorer on: September 19, 2008, 10:27:37 AM
I just tried out IE7Pro. (Download from here)
Those guys have really done an amazing job. Tinjaw, If you could somehow get it installed all your problems would be solved. It comes with everything you could ever want.
  • Add Blocker
  • User Scripts
  • Spell Checker
  • Synchronize Bookmarks
  • Form Filler
  • Proxy Changer
Anything else you might need you can find at http://www.iescripts.org/
One of my favorite features in Pro is the Smart Drag.

The problem with IE is that its not made to be extendable so extenders have to write in a compiled language like C++, as explained in this article by a developer of adblock plus.
There are also several other "extentions" which I have not tried:

I know this probably does not help much but give it a shot anyways.
I think everyone knows how you feel about the bureaucracy in the office. You are bound to experience it it at some point in your life. Right now I'm feeling it in the college system. Hang in there.

Well...what exactly are the extensions/ features do you like in Firefox so I know what to look for. I have a few ideas but they are all not productivity related. What makes your Firefox so productive / useful?

94  DonationCoder.com Software / Post New Requests Here / REQUEST: Ignore rapid key press. on: September 15, 2008, 07:10:54 PM
My laptop has a short that causes allot of keys to be simulated whenever something bumps it or whenever I want to move it somewhere. Every time it has happened it reeks havoc with my computer, shutting it down, closing out programs, loading up programs ext... I was wondering if there was a way to get the computer to recognize when this happened and ignore the input. I'm offering 5 credits to anyone who writes something that works for me. I know thats not much but its what I got.

98  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Forum 2.0 Suggestion on: September 10, 2008, 10:15:46 PM
I just thought of another really good one. How about the ability for a moderator to mark really good posts on a long thread so if somone is looking at an archive he/she can just go strait to the good stuff.
99  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Forum 2.0 Suggestion on: September 10, 2008, 09:45:03 PM
By chat do you mean a one-on-one private chat? Because there's always the IRQ channel, don't ya know!

Ask Paul. It was his suggestion:

...and finally this is probably more complication than it's worth it but it would be great if you can mimic Tangler's real time forum chatting with forum posts so you can either directly get a preview of the forum contents without leaving chat or view chat posts on a forum post without going to the chatroom but it's not really beneficial, just something that might satisfy the twitter generation of forum users.
