General Software Discussion / Re: Unity Desktop (Ubuntu)
« on: July 05, 2012, 07:27 AM »
Just jumping into unity without any documentation, and knowing that in older versions of ubuntu, pressing the super key did nothing, he probably didn't know that you could push it to open the "start menu." I don't like unity either. Thats why I installed the kde desktop on top of ubuntu (can't remember why, but there is a reason I'm not using the physical kubuntu distro.)

Cool that you have a fix that doesn't require another package :)
kind of a good thing too, because I can't find that package on my server. (trying to type apt-get install says it can't find it, and it isn't installed either.)

One thing to try is to send an Email to an invalid address to see what your mail servers NDRs are supposed to look like. As it's entirely possible (they won't match) that the mail is getting (bank shotted) bounced a few times before it gets to you.
I use google apps for my mail server.

I think I will setup a spf record for my domain name. Hopefully that will help a little in some way.

edit:well it appears I already have an spf record setup. (I don't manage the dns for my domain, someone else does. They may have set it up.)
I also decided that I will just disable my catchall setting on my google apps account, and actually create email aliases instead of using the catchall as an alias.

I actually found a different fix that works. I needed to add the dns servers to the etc/network/interfaces file, and that seems to update the resolv.conf file everytime I reboot the server.

131
I have a computer setup running ubuntu server 12.04, with a static ip, and every time I reboot it, it loses it's ability to do dns lookups. The only way I can fix this is by changing the etc/resolv.conf file and adding custom dns servers to it. Though as stated earlier, upon reboot, this file reverts to default, and my server can no longer do dns lookups. I've googled, and found one fix that said to do some chattr command, but that just gives me the error "chattr: Operation not supported while reading flags on resolv.conf". There was also another fix that said to add the dns servers to a file in the folder etc/dhcp3. The problem with that fix is, that folder doesn't even exist. Is there some place else that I can add custom dns servers that will persist between reboots.

Exact commands would be very helpful, because I am still a linux newb, and am still learning the terminal.

I've setup a gmail label in my account, so new whenever I see one of the return to sender emails, I just add it to the label so that later I can go back and examine it.

133
Guess I'm SOL then. Just one of the many perks of owning your own domain name. ;D

Edit: wow, I just checked my spam folder, and found 7 more... :o

134
That kind of sucks to hear, but I was almost expecting that.

Living Room / Someone may be maliciously using my domain name
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:44 PM »
Recently I have been getting returned mail delivery errors stating that "somerandomname(at)mydomainnamehere(dot)com" could not be delivered, because the recipient doesn't exist. I know for a fact that this is not my doing, because I use, and am the admin of the google apps account that creates email accounts for my domain name, and none of the accounts that are sending these emails are real. So I am guessing someone is spoofing their email address and using my domain name to do it. I looked at the returned mail email error, and it said the email was mailed-by host102(dot)host102-server(dot)com.

There was a file attached to the error message that apparently gives me more information on the person who is doing it. Their name is apparently Phoebe Henry, and the reply to address is Annette Thompson.

I won't attach the file here, because it has this Annette person's email in it. If someone wan'ts me to though, I can remove their email, and then attach the file here.

any help on how to put an end to this would be much appreciated. I don't want this person/people to send an email to a real person, and have me take the blame for it.

Boat anchor? lol, jk. I like the idea of ripping them apart and playing with the magnets. I might have to do that to my old dead drives.

Adblock Plus (beta) - I hate ads
Fullscreen address bar - I wish chrome was more like FF in fullscreen
Hover Zoom - I look at devart profiles almost everyday, and this makes it so I don't have to open each image separatly.
Live CSS Editor - For when people think white text on a black background is a good idea.
RSS Subscription Extension (by Google) - because chrome doesn't support rss by default (wtf?!)
View Image Info (properties) - because chrome doesn't have a view image info by default (again wtf?!)
WOT - because I hate evil websites.
StumbleUpon - For when I am bored and have nothing else to do.

I ran web platform installer and told it to install php. I'm going to see if I can figure out what perms php has, and see if that fixes it.

I'm running a website on a windows server 2008 R2 box. I have wordpress installed on it, and if I upload an image, the uploaded image gets the required permissions (iusr and iis_iusrs both have permission to touch it.)
I am experimenting with a CMS that doesn't use a database (testing gpeasy right now) So far everything seems to work great with it, but when I upload images via the CMS' built in image uploader, iis_iusrs isn't added to the list of users that can touch the image. This causes the image to not be viewable. Is there a way that I can fix this so that any files that are added by the CMS will auto allow both iusr and iis_iusrs to touch them?
It's really annoying having to remote into the server just to fix the permissions every time I want to upload an image, and I don't really want to stay with wordpress, because it runs too slow on iis (at least on my server it does).

140
well thats weird. my email digests never did that. I always thought youtube was broken. I guess it's just my account thats messed up.

141
but does it show playlists and shows you are subscribed to? I used to get those emails (not sure why I don't anymore) and I don't really remember ever seeing the playlists I subscribed to showing up in those emails either.

142
Thats what I assumed it was for but:
It doesn't do anything. Back when youtube had the subscription box, the subscribed shows/playlists wouldn't show up in the sub box, and with the new (terrible) homepage, they don't show up either.

143
I've noticed that there is a subscribe button on youtube playlist pages, and on show pages. I don't see what the point is. It doesn't do anything. Back when youtube had the subscription box, the subscribed shows/playlists wouldn't show up in the sub box, and with the new (terrible) homepage, they don't show up either.

General Software Discussion / Re: uTorrent alternatives?
« on: February 23, 2012, 06:11 AM »
Im using uTorrent 3.1.2 build 26773 and the only ad for the plus version I see is a small box in the lower left corner. The previous few versions have been the same way.

146
ie. Instead of maybe just suffering a filesystem aberration on a single system 4kB file that is, possibly, easily fixable, you could now suffer it on a multi-GB file where a single corruption will render the whole thing useless.
I did not think of that.

With ultimate or enterprise you can add the vhd with bcdedit as a boot option
Thats also available with professional which is what I have. I did that when I tried out windows 8 dev preview.

edit:well what do you know. Upon further research, I just found out that I can't do any of this. You can only install ult and ent on a bootable vhd.

147
Now that I crammed the entire topic of this post into that massive title, I can get onto the post.
If you are like me, you hate having to activate windows every time you reinstall it. That is why I used driveimagexml to back up my fresh install of windows 7. Now whenever I need to reinstall windows, I just format my drive and restore the image I made, and I don't have to activate windows again.

Just today however, I ran across this website that gave a tutorial on howto install windows to a bootable vhd with no previous os.
That gave me an idea. What if I were to take my 2TB drive, and empty it of any files, and then create a vhd, install and activate windows on that vhd, and then create a copy of this vhd file. That way the next time I need to reinstall windows, all I would have to do is delete the copied vhd file, and make a new copy of the original vhd file. I then just make that copy bootable and have a fresh clean os.

My question is, would this be a viable alternative to making a driveimagexml image of my fresh activated windows?

The more I looked at it (also thanks to wraith's site) I think I will most likely get the 560. It's starting to look a lot better.

Living Room / Need some video card buying advice
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:11 PM »
I'm specing out a new gaming computer because my current computer is kind of old, and I can't really play newer games on it very well.
I've got everything picked out that I want, but I don't really know exactly what I am looking at when it comes to graphics cards, so I have two picked out
I was wondering which one would be better of the two.

the first one is the GeForce GTX 560
the second one, and is the one I am leaning towards more is the GeForce GTX 550 Ti
As far as I can tell, the 550 card has better specs than the 560 card, except for the stream processors and the memory interface.

Which card would you guys suggest? or if you can find another card that is better (preferably nvidia) that is not more expensive than the 560 ($189.99)

(on a side note, I wish they would switch the free offers. the card I kind of want more comes with a free benchmark tool, while the other comes with Arkham City, which I really want)
