Both of those look really good guys!

I don't want a browser addon or plugin. I don't want a web service like Video2MP3. I want a standalone (preferably portable) software that sniffs away at requests, lists video/audio files that are active, and gives you the option to download them as a raw file. Am I being too picky or does anything like this actually exist?

Would a portable launcher that uses relative directories work for you? I use PStart: pegtop.net/pstart It launches directories, programs, files...
Something with relative paths would work but I only see the U3 and installable versions of PStart on their website, is there any standard portable version I can throw in Dropbox?

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Dropbox "Desktop"
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:05 AM »
I use Dropbox for a lot of things, including well over 200 portable applications. Almost everything running on my hard drive right now is thinstalled and not touching my Windows registry or drivers and services, which I love. Here is my dilemma though: Of these 200+ portable applications I have, I use 15-20 of them very frequently and it's a pain to clutter the desktop with my all-purpose Dropbox applications. At one point, I had the bright idea to make a "Shortcuts" folder in my Dropbox, but adding shortcuts will not work when synced universally, because paths to shortcuts are "hard" defined and I can't assume that every single Windows computer I sync them to will have that same username/folder structure.

What I had in mind was a "Dropbox Desktop" application that would basically be one program that you could launch, that would basically be a pop-out menu or holder for shortcuts. As it is to be used specifically for Dropbox and Dropbox's synced folders cannot be changed or take their own shape, computer-to-computer. So in this way, "shortcuts" can work and sync universally proplerly, by just assuming the path is "%DROPBOX_FOLDER%\whatever_the_folder_is_thereafter". Does anyone think something like this is possible?

General Software Discussion / Monitoring USB Ports

Is there any Windows application that can tell me show me my available USB ports/hubs and then explain to me or show me what devices are currently connected/active in this ports?

Something that I could specify to archive files in a directory 30 days after they were last created/modified would be great.

Which datestamp would you like me to use?  The created or the last modified?
Being able to choose between either would be great, but if only one then I think last modified would be best. Thanks so much if you're planning to code this up!

I assume the podcasts are MP3 or some other lossy (compressed) format.  If so, you do realise that you're not going to save hardly any space at all by compressing those files, right?
Yeah, that really wasn't the best singular example. Another though: http://screensnapr.com/v/UcBk8X.png (folder comprised entirely of scraped .txt files)

I've still not really found anything to accomplish this.
The end goal here was because I use Juice to automate downloading podcasts, which I download to my Dropbox so that I can listen to them across my devices. After a while, the files began to suck up a lot of space and I don't necessarily want to delete them because I still may have not listened to them, would rather just compress them in a .rar or something like that. With an application like this, I could have it monitor that podcast directory for files that are a certain age old from today and have them automatically compress. It wouldn't need to monitor folders in realtime because then we'd be compressing files one by one, rather something that I could run manually, or on a schedule, every few days.

Great tools but both of them only move files. Have any that compress/archive them?

General Software Discussion / Automatic Archiving?

I was wondering if any application existed that would automate the archiving (to save disk space) of files in a directory after a certain amount of time? Something that I could specify to archive files in a directory 30 days after they were last created/modified would be great. Anything?

Post New Requests Here / Rename Log
« on: April 28, 2011, 02:08 AM »
I was wondering if there's any application out there that will modify certain folders or files and keep a log of if files in that range are renamed, and what to?
Er, just noticed I accidentally posted this in the Finished Programs section and not Coding Snacks. Sorry about that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Dropbox Shortcuts Holder
« on: March 27, 2011, 05:16 PM »
I use the PortableApps.com launcher (in my Dropbox directory), then manually pin a shortcut to the start menu on each PC.

If you're using portable applications that aren't available from PortableApps.com, you could also put them in the PortableApps.com "Documents" directory and use the launcher's button to quickly access that directory.
Still don't see how that'd work as any programs I add would be added by the absolute path of the file within the Dropbox directory. It'd be helpful if there was some environment variable in Windows specifically for your Dropbox.

General Software Discussion / Dropbox Shortcuts Holder
« on: March 27, 2011, 04:40 PM »
Okay, I use Dropbox to carry a lot of portable applications. Dropbox installs in different directories on different systems by default and whatnot. Some of these programs I use more frequently then others so I wanted to make shortcuts. I use them across all of my computers and I don't want to make all of these shortcuts on every single computer.

I made a "Shortcuts" directory to throw them in, in Dropbox, but that doesn't work since the absolute path won't be the same across systems. I was wondering if there was some program specifically for Dropbox that I could use as a holder for my shortcuts? I was thinking some standalone program that you can launch within Dropbox and toss all your Dropbox shortcuts in and it just sets the path based on your Dropbox installation directory + directory within the Dropbox.

It took a while, but I've found the thread I mentioned, and it has a solution as well
Looked, but it seems like most download links there have been removed?

There's a Microsoft KB article about IPsec installation and usage. That's able to block/unblock, but I haven't read enough of the details to see if it can also properly list whether the ports are actually transferring data.
Yeah, I looked into that just recently and it sort of touched on what I wanted but you can't make any rulesets or anything.

Here's my situation: I play an online game that is extremely ping-dependent, and my connection isn't the best. Basically, when I play this game, I want to run some application that I can start up and load/set a ruleset that will block all other applications other than this game for accessing the internet so that only the game itself is affecting my ping.

If someone wanted to make a neat little portable application specifically for this purpose, I would definitely donate.

I need an application (other than a basic firewall) that I can basically turn on or off that will basically allow me to see a list of programs with active connections to the internet that are sending and receiving and allow me to temporarily suspend those applications so that they do not have access to the internet.

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Re: how to make every app portable?
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:05 PM »
Get VirtualBox on PortableApps.com (somehow), then buy a 64GB USB drive and use it for a portable VM with everything you want installed on it! :P
Is this a legit idea? That sounds pretty awesome, does VBox portable run smoothly?

This is good. No portable version?

General Software Discussion / Re: Serial Key Storage for Windows
« on: February 25, 2011, 03:42 AM »
I just use a roboform safenote for each serial I have. I see no reason to use a specific program for something like this unless very specific needs are demonstrated.
Well, for example, you're suggesting to use RoboForm. I don't use RoboForm, it isn't free, and the primary function of RoboForm is password storage. It's bulky and more than what is needed.
I am looking for something I can toss on a USB or Dropbox and have with me wherever.

Is there anything I can use to basically center (horizontally and vertically) a single window?
