51  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Multiple Mini Reviews on: January 01, 2014, 04:51:05 PM

May I suggest that we owe a vote of thanks to IainB for the past year of thorough, well-researched, and interesting mini reviews. These take a fair bit of time to assemble and have proved to be enlightening.

So, thanks IainB  Thmbsup

53  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ... reasonable backup software on: January 01, 2014, 10:55:03 AM
He does your basic backup imaging(I think he uses Macrium.)  But periodically he puts an internal drive that is identical make/model/size to the system drive in his PC, in a docking station and restores the image of his working system to that drive.  He stores the drive away.  Now if he has a drive failure he opens the box, replaces the HD, and boots to a working system.

Of course if there's nothing wrong with the boot drive physically, then he just does an image restore from the drive in the dock, booting the Macrium rescue disk from USB or whatever.

FWIW, I do the same thing, also with Macrium Reflect. Luckily, on my main box I have a twin-bay drive caddy with two SSDs, so its a piece of cake to do this. That caddy is one of the most convenient items I've ever had on a computer.

I used to use Rollback RX when on XP but even the latest versions of it hose my W7 and W8 systems.

I have yet to see Macrium fail. For example, I just restored a four-drive system to Win7 from Win8.

Having a clone of the boot drive is useful but I tend to forget to keep it up to date, whereas I do remember to carry out regular backups, rotating the backup media (I know that's illogical).

(if you don't know what it is, you send someone an image, and they have 10 seconds(?) to look at it before it's deleted).
Hmm...that's how my memory functions  ohmy

And done.  It does look better with the tweaks, IMO.  Let me know what you think.
Sorry for the delay (working on a major computer castrophe here).
That is better for me — thanks a lot! I can't see the cross very well but I can see the check mark, and one indicator is enough.
It doesn't help that the background on my screens is grey  Grin  ohmy

It should be fading in on hover... maybe I just need to make it fade in more and change the animation.  Let me tweak it a bit more.
Sorry,  I wasn't clear about what I meant. It does fade in on hover now, but not enough for me to see whether the icon indicates locked or unlocked. A tweak might well do it.
59  DonationCoder.com Software / N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: ImgFloat (a tool for Screenshot Captor) on: December 28, 2013, 01:39:55 AM
Very nice indeed  Thmbsup

Thanks for adding image locking!
My only quibble is that I find it a bit difficult to see the state of the lock/unlock icon.
Is there a way to help with that? Fade in, on hover, to a higher degree of opacity? A tooltip? A locked/unlocked menu?
The settings icon is fine as it pops up a menu.

It's only a guess, but I'd be unsurprised by some hassle over activation.

There might be a way to dodge that.

A chocolate sandwich.

This is created by placing one piece of chocolate between two others.

you can make progress bars that you can freely adjust just by clicking on them.
My progress just improved enormously. Three clicks and my most-dreaded deadlines have been met  Thmbsup

When can I expect the complementary life-adjustment module?

You could take a look at Real-World Paint.
The author is responsive here, at DC, and otherwise.
Or, why not save a lot of trouble and keep the lens cap in place?

Good point! ...But if we're doing one flew over the cooko's nest ... Who get's elected as Full Goose Loony, Chief?

Hmmm, I don't suppose anyone on DC wants to throw their hat into the ring?   tongue
Not to be too unoriginal but I've done that twice before, so this time it's a tri-corn...

I don't know what to call it to adequately communicate what it's for.  Any ideas?
suspend/resume ImageFloat? Lock/unlock current image?

Hey, that's really nice!

It's great to have on-the-fly reference material posted to the screen so easily, with the ability still to see what's happening on the desktop. I know that would have been possible previously by playing with the opacity of various windows but this way is so much better.

Now... how do you plan on enhancing CH+S?  Wink

Not at all, it's a D-Link DIR-615.

Thanks Deozaan and 40hz.

I had flushed the cache and tried the Google DNS settings, with which I prefer not to stay for obvious reasons.
Now I've switched to OpenDNS. Of course, at the moment everything is out to lunch as my ISP is having weather-related problems.
My site did seem to come up reasonably quickly, though, so I'll get back on it when things smooth out again to the point where more testing makes sense. By then I'll have a chance of reaching my ISP's support people by phone.

Boy, I've flushed so often that I'll be the poster boy for hygiene!   Wink

Thanks for everyone's participation, much appreciated!
