Official Announcements / Re: The Gizmo Effect!
« on: April 13, 2007, 08:27 AM »
Congratulations on the influx of new donating members.
It's nice to think that so many more people are going to be pleased and satisfied by what they find here!
Welcome to one and all...you've made a good choice!

This must be a date to think about!

Mouser,
I know we're all computer-centric here but I've found using 10x10 lines/inch graph paper is by far the best way to do this (except for complex stuff like laying out a kitchen, unit by unit). Lay out your room on the grid, make some scaled cut-outs for your objects and move them with your fingers.

If your sense of computer deprivation becomes too severe, you can push the objects around with a spare mouse.

Just a quick update picture of my wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling bookcase installation so far:
Good to see some progress. It's a shame you can't afford a better carpet, though...

4530
I also join the increasing force demanding mouser to finish his Ph.D ALREADY!
Forget the Ph.D, what about those bookshelves?

Bah! North American bigots!
More parochial than that, so don't feel bad.
Although it presents a mechanism by which to register from Canada, I can't persuade it to accept the data (not even when resorting to IE) :o

jammo,
Thanks very much for all that information.  There's food for thought in there.  I almost never use a cell phone and when I do it's inevitably to call out from my car.  Only 2 people have *my* number.  There have been times when  the phone has been more useful for short periods (such as when buying a proprty, for example).  An all-in-onemight be a good way to go.

I just wanted to update this ans say this one page is incredibly useful if you are building bookcases and stuff:
http://www.woodbin.c.../calcs/sagulator.htm

It helps you calculate the maximum span without sagging for different materials.
It's certainly useful. Like many others, I keep an old PC in my workshop. That gives me fast access to a lot of stuff that used to require reference books. Also, I can enlarge wording that's on the screen, if need be, which saves the annoyance of fiddling around changing spectacles.

What about calling that same script via window's own task scheduler (first set up a daily task, then go back and edit it to go into "Advanced" and enable repeat task every ... 30 minutes).

You can also use System Scheduler (free and pro versions) (www.splinterware.com)  if window's own task scheduler is flaky running on your system.

patrick
Patrick, thanks for the reply. To use the built-in scheduler occurred to me, too, not long after posting (act first, think later). Having set up a task, I managed to remember to turn off the drives last night

I appreciate your response, and the link to System Scheduler.

I have a couple of external drives which might be on or off, depending what I'm doing.

I really don't want them running all the time, especially overnight, but I can easily forget about them.

At the moment I have a few lines of AHK to tell me if they're on during shutdown.

What I'd like, for the (majority of) times when I don't shut down, is this:

Something that can run after a time I choose (let's say 22:00) and look periodically (let's say every 30 minutes) to see if specific drive letters are in use (let's say Q: and X:).

If one or both of the drives are on, I'd like to be reminded about it/them.  Then, when I wander off for the night, I won't leave them running.

app103:  he won't act like a cranky old man
And what, pray, is your objection to a cranky old men?  ;)
My favourite machine is a years-old, all-SCSI box, that's the most reliable backup system I've had in a long time.  (It runs XP Pro nowadays: apparently, I got on its good side when it was a mere slip of a lad.)

Living Room / Re: Demise of the trackball? What's the alternative?
« on: February 17, 2007, 11:05 AM »
Has anyone come across any new trackballs? I am still looking for a replacement for my trackball explorer which has seen better days.
Nothing so far, for me. I followed up some suggestions from here but none was exactly what I wanted. I ended up buying a bunch of reconditioned units that'll probably see me out. Do post something here if you have any better luck.

This article is a nice idea, well thought out, well written, and informational.
A lot of care must have gone into this... it shows!
Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Re: CD Ripping
« on: February 15, 2007, 03:06 PM »
There is some error-correction done in cd players, which is why a scratched CD I have plays perfectly in my NAD player, but can't be ripped 100% on my computer.
Off topic, I know, but it' nice to see another NAD aficionado.  Do you have the Master series?

4540
I should have made it clearer that that's what the beta of EverNote Plus 2.0 claims to do, rather than the existing version.  You have a stiff test regime; maybe you should apply to be a beta tester  :)
Yes, good idea, that should bring them to their knees :D

This seems like it might be a task for the "Amazon Mechanical Turk" (http://requester.mturk.com/mturk/welcome).
You can scan the documents into image files...If you do this, please let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the link, it's nice of you to post it for me.  I'll take a look as soon as I have a bit more time to experiment.  The problem is that my stuff is time critical.  Currently I employ people directly who read and type the material, and it has to be in a specific format  Computers ought to be able to handle these kinds of operations, and probably can if I can just find the right contacts/software/combinations thereof.

4542
Here's a very good source for all sorts of info on the th55 (including a long thread on battery life btw)

Btw, I'm happy to answer your questions  :D

Thanks again!  I'll follow up the link you mentioned.  Much appreciated.

rjbull:  cranioscopical,

That seems to be what Evernote Plus ($39.95) claims to do...
Thanks for the reply.
I'll look into it some more.  It wouldn't the last time I looked at it, but that was a while back.
The trouble is, I'll have 100 documents at a time, each with unique handwriting.  I've yet to see the software that can handle it, outside of HUGELY expensive applications (and they're not perfect).

cthorpe:  It's too bad that you can't get a discount from them.  Don't know how I managed it when I did.  Must have gotten the right rep on the phone.
Persistence counts.  I tried again -- different person -- and they were generous enough to provide a 25%-off code.
I'll probably take advantage of your batch material once I see how FD-ISR behaves.
Thanks again for the recommendation, review, and batch tricks.

4545
tsaint,
Two more questions, in addition to 'how long to recharge from dead',  if you can stand it...
  • Were you able to move your existing Palm databases all the way through to the th55?
  • Does the th55 use the same kind of sync, i.e. through some variant of the Palm Desktop?
TIA
Chris

4546
About a minute or 10 after I start charging it can be booted and used when it ran totally down, but again that's hardly ever the case with me. I don't travel so much for work so I don't really have to worry a lot about it.
Thanks, RuffNek, that's very helpful to know.
I wonder if it can be recharged/run from one of the portable charge/run units that does use batteries?  It'd be easy to keep one of those in a briefcase, for emergencies.
Thanks again for you help, it's much appreciated.

General Software Discussion / Re: needed: tool to sync two HDs/folders
« on: February 13, 2007, 09:20 AM »
You've looked at this?
SyncToy 1.4 for Windows Vista is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

Not sure about locked file behaviour...

4548
Thanks again, guys!

I *have* to have the thing in my shirt pocket all the time.

RuffNek, your sensible habit of constantly charging in different places isn't the best soultion for me. Typically I don't use a laptop, certainly not in meetings where I'm likely to need some info in a hurry, so I haven't an available USB port.  In the car's okay, but when I need info I might be in my workshop, in the garden shed, in a meeting, on a plane, at the shops... so the shirt-pocket solution is best for me.  If I leave the thing charging on my main machine, Il guarantee that I'll need some information when I'm at the other end of the house and three floors down  :)

Tony, don't trouble yourself with a test (but thank you for the offer) your guesstimate is more than enough to give me an idea.  Once a week ought to be manageable, even for me.

Armed with the ideas I've picked up here already I'm going to shop around the next time I'm in an urban centre and see what's readily available locally.  I've retired to a rural area where the local idea of slick communication is to use  a sharp pencil, not a blunt one.

Can I ask you both, if your unit's battery runs down, how long would it take to recharge it to the point where it can once again access it's non-volatile memory?

4549
Two things about FD-ISR, which I intend to purchase.

1) I had no luck persuading those I contacted at Raxco that I might merit a discount. (c'est la vie).  They were very pleasant but not willing to bend.

2) Acording to Raxco, one can't upgrade to VISTA with the current version installed.  No big deal since it uninstalls readily.  A VISTA version is expected soon, and I was trying to hold out for that, so that my premium for "Upgrade protection" wouldn't be 'used up' immediately.  I think I'll probably just buy a copy and install it now, anyway, since I don't plan on putting VISTA on my current machine.  Anyone buying FD-ISR right now, and also planning to move to VISTA, would be well advised to take the "Upgrade protection" option.

Ruffnekk: I'm using an old Orange SPV M500 with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.
Thanks for the reply!  That all looks good but for the battery life (I'd forget to recharge it).  So, you take a charger along with you if on a trip?  How long to bring it back from the dead?  Is the data still there when you revive it?

tsaint: The th55 is a joy to use
Thank you, too!  Looks as if you've travelled the road I'm about to walk.  I refer to a Palm on average about every three days.  I know that's not often, but when I need it, I need it.
If I did this with the th55, and simply looked up, say three contacts and the calendar, what would be your guess about time between recharging?
That the th55 is out of production might be both good and bad.  Bad because I can't walk into a store and pick one up.  Good because I may find one on eBay or some such.

rjbull: does it have non-volatile memory?  If your battery goes flat, do you lose everything?
Oh, thank you, very good point!  It's amazing how blinkered I can be.  I haven't thought about that at all.  I just made the tacit asumption that everything works as the Palm does.  With the Palm, I can't get any data until I replace the batteries and sync with data elsewhere.  However, if I see that power levels are low, I *can* do something about that no matter where I am.
So, a unit with non-vol memory would give me access to 'lost' data if, say, I returned to my hotel room and recharged the device?  If so, I guess that makes recharging time--from dead to minimal functionality--a big factor in purchase decisions.

Boy, this is a great way to get information, thank you all. And thanks for further anticipated responses!

I ought to be able to recharge a device on a daily basis, but I forget.
The reason I have several of them is that they're scattered around (one in each briefcase, one in each jacket, one in each car...) to save me from my forgetful self.
I can see I'm going to have to modify my behaviour with repect to that.
