If anyone is interested, you CAN disable and remove the unannounced Protexis licensing spyware. THIS IS NOT A HACK AND YOU STILL NEED TO PURCHASE THE PROGRAM AND USE A VALID KEY.  It just removes the unnecessary background service that was shoved into your system without your permission.
  • Close Paint Shop Pro
  • Go into control panel, administratve tools, services sort the services by name, then stop the Protexis V2 service
  • Browse to your Corel directory, then into Paint Shop Pro's root folder ("\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2" where "Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe" resides)and MOVE "PSClient.dll" to another folder, then rename it "PSClient.dll.bak"
  • Browse to your Windows/system32 folder and find "PSIKey.dll" MOVE it to another directory, rename it to "PSIKey.dll.bak"
  • Browse to "\%Program Files%\Common Files\Protexis\License Service" and rename the DLL in that directory to "PSClient.dll"
  • MOVE the newly renamed "PSClient.dll" to your Corel PSP root directory (same place that the PSP executable resides)
Start Paint Shop Pro and be sure it works.  If it does, you can remove the backup files, open a command prompt, use "sc delete PSI_SVC_2" to remove the protexis service, then delete the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\License Service\" directory.
328  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Open DNS is s***ware on: September 09, 2008, 01:36:30 PM
I have been using OpenDNS since the start. I can stream Myspace music, the search page I am sent to is not a problem when the site I am trying to get to isn't loading, and the page even tells me which nameservers are failing. I believe it's google based and very non-intrusive.  I can filter content with OpenDNS, manage networks, and more.  I really have no idea why you are having those problems, but I have used nothing else for a LONG time now, and have disabled Vista's DNS service.  It is faster, and much more secure than my ISP's DNS.  Have you tried IMing them?  Emailing?  They are extremely responsive and helpful.

This sounds like user inexperience to me.

330  Other Software / DC Gamer Club / Re: Steam, and the gift of game... on: September 01, 2008, 01:30:32 PM
I bought it, but I have never really gotten into TF2.  It's unbelievable how much I love COD4 though, but my true addiction is Counterstrike:Source.

I replied to your email BTW.  You can add me on Steam as a friend, I included all the information.  Be sure to email me with any questions or concerns.
331  Other Software / DC Gamer Club / Re: Steam, and the gift of game... on: September 01, 2008, 01:08:22 PM
A:  Phoning home is useful unless you are running a stolen or "warez" version of a software, not a concern for valid, non-malicious software. (not including malware etc.)  Don't believe the hype.

B:  Services don't "hide" unless they are malicious.  If it is a valid service it is easily viewable through the services snap-in or console commands.

C:  Yes it runs when Windows starts up if you choose to let it.  It only installs a service under Windows Vista.

To me, Steam is a Godsend.  I can format this computer, or any other one, install Steam, and all my Steam purchased games are there.  The download takes a while of course, but in the end it's just like offsite storage.  I can also back up all my game files to a DVD, reinstall Steam, and restore, only needing updates to reduce the download time.

You can only log into your account one time, meaning no multiple logins to the same user account.

The communication system in Steam has evolved to include IN GAME chat to anyone on your friends list, either voice or text.  You can chat with multiple people and hold voice conferences with many folks talking at once, all over Steam.

It's a plus in my opinion.

I can help you out.  My wife says the money needs to go in Paypal first though, and since I am poor, that's a necessity.  Contact me by Email, y0himba(at)gmail(dot)com.  I already have COD4, so I will purchase it and then gift it to you over Steam.

I use it, and I am impressed jsut like you are.  Being able to speak what I want to type and having it appear with ACCURACY is quit wonderful.  Setting up macros is really helpful also.

I have had no problems.  We have been using the service for 6 months now.  We have the 3 at a time plan, and it's perfect. We have received 2 damaged DVDs in that time, they were both replaced within 2 days.  I also use the streaming service "Watch Instantly", which I stream to my 52 inch HDTV.  The quality is amazing, DVD or better, and the sound is perfect.

I love it and recommend it. Thmbsup Thmbsup

336  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: CleanMem - apparently a memory optimizer with a difference... on: August 20, 2008, 10:31:02 AM
If it uses the Process Idle Task command it does nothing really.

[copy or print]
%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Just tells Windows to process tasks that are set to be run when the computer is idle.  From what I have seen, Cleanmem doesn't do anything here.  In Vista you can use the command line "Freemem" which works quite nicely.  It comes with Vista.
337  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / View Vista Styles Just Like In XP on: August 19, 2008, 10:53:39 AM
Folks who run Vista can patch the system to run custom styles, but when they list them in the classic appearance panel they get a list of "Windows Aero" and Windows Vista Basic", a bunch of them, all same name.  This genius little hack allows you to view the actual name of the visual style just like in Windows XP.

I dunno, maybe it's like Steam, when I wipe my drive I can re-install Steam and all my games download.  Read the fine print and see if they store your license info for you also.

I am using nothing but Halite now.  I used it to grab the 1968 Romero classic, "Night Of The Living Dead", which is now public domain.  Fast and simple!  Best yet.

344  Other Software / Developer's Corner / Vista Gadget Guru Wanted-HELP! on: July 19, 2008, 04:53:36 PM
I don't know if this is the forum section to post this in, but the description of the forum best suits what I am looking for.

I have a Vista sidebar gadget called "Proweather".  It is quite simply the best weather gadget there is, hands down.  Here is the link:

http://gallery.live.com/l...3503d00&bt=1&pl=1

This thing is incredible.  It works perfectly for me except for one small, but completely necessary feature, the weather maps/images will not display.  I have tried everything, disabled firewall, connected to cable modem with no router, set permissions on the relevant folders, uninstalled it then reinstalled it under the "Super Administrator" account, I have even tried looking at the XML or whatever code it is, but of course it's all "Greek" to me.

I have tried other weather gadgets, none come even close.  No one seems to be making gadgets anymore, yet they are incredibly convenient, probably one of the better features of Vista.  PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME! smiley

Before this devolves into an MS hater/Vista hater discussion, don't.  If you have nothing constructive or helpful to add, don't.  I don't want this to be a discussion like so many other discussions all over the 'net where folks try to one up each other by hating MS or Linux this or blah blah Ad Naseum.

I am asking for a little help to find the problem, or at least to get some debugging info so I can figure out why this isn't working.  Thank anyone in advance for any help that can be given.  I have the gadget here, or it can be obtained from the link above.

I don't think you would need to code a driver, although that would be the best way to go....

I have been without a page file for 24 hours now.  Specs:  Intel Q6600 Quad Core, 4GB DDR3 1033, Vista Business 32bit. Only difference I see is less drive chatter.  Other than that, nothing.

No difference at all actually.
