FARR Plugins and Aliases / "Go" Alias SLOW!
« on: March 16, 2010, 03:33 AM »
Hello all:
It's been ages since I've posted on here, and I really feel bad that my new post is a complaint. But...

I have an alias, "Go", which really just uses the "I'm Feeling Lucky" function of Google. I type "go Siouxsie" and it takes me to the "I'm Feeling Lucky" result for Siouxsie. What the problem is, is that after I press 'enter', FARR will sit there for up to a minute before producing the result. Now I understand that this may take a while if I don't already have Firefox open, but when it is open, I don't quite get it. When Firefox is open, it responds almost instantly most of the time, when it sits there and 'waits' is what frustrates me, but it doesn't happen all the time.

Anyone have any suggestions? Or maybe an explanation of why this may be happening?

As usual, thank you all for your help and suggestions!

Find And Run Robot / Doesn't Want To Stay Put!
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:28 AM »
Hello all:
I've been having problems with FARR not behaving as far as sizing and placement are concerned. Since the date is now shown in the title bar, I widened FARR to accommodate it. Also I use Skrommel's WinWarden to place it at the top, center. But it won't stay that way. It seems that as far as the widening is concerned, it only changes when I restart my machine. But concerning the placement at top, center, it drifts over time, regardless of whether or not I restart the machine.

So, anyone else notice this? Is there a setting somewhere that I'm overlooking?

As usual, any help/suggestions are very much appreciated!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / IMDB Incremental Search Plugin
« on: December 07, 2009, 01:43 PM »
Hello all:
I just reinstalled Windows7 and forgot to backup my FARR plugins and such. I had an IMDB plugin that searched as I typed, and I can't find it anywhere on here. Any help?

Find And Run Robot / Email Pop-Up
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:40 AM »
Hey all:
How can I create an alias that opens up a blank email window? I'd like to just type in a keyword and have it bring up a blank email without having to first open Thunderbird, then click "write". Any help, as usual, is very much appreciated.

Find And Run Robot / Re: "Mail" instead of "Thunderbird"
« on: November 20, 2009, 03:25 PM »
  • Search for thunderbird inside farr.
  • When it comes up in results, right click on it and you'll see the context menu.
  • Choose "Add to group Alias-> new alias group"
  • Name the new alias group "mail".
  • Give it a high score like 2000.
  • Click Ok.
  • All done.

Fantastic! That was far easier than I thought it would be. Yay! Now I can do some more tweaking! Thank you!

Find And Run Robot / "Mail" instead of "Thunderbird"
« on: November 20, 2009, 01:51 PM »
Hello all:
How can I use the word "mail" instead of "Thunderbird" to launch it via FARR. Keep in mind I have no idea how to write an alias...

Ah. I see now. Thanks for the correction!

Circle Dock / Re: Help? Getting Started?
« on: November 08, 2009, 08:27 PM »
Just a note: I went to the settings on CircleDock and went to the help section, which lead me to its FAQ, which wasn't an FAQ at all, as well as being directed to this forum. Neither provide any sort of help, which to me is a huge surprise considering CircleDock's connection with DonationCoder. DC has always been above and beyond expectations when it comes to getting help. I'm having a lot of difficulty configuring CircleDock, and the settings are beyond vague. Am I alone on this one?

Circle Dock / Help? Getting Started?
« on: November 08, 2009, 01:59 PM »
Is there some sort of help file for Circle Dock? There are so many things I can't figure out, and the only "help" I have found assumes previous knowledge and a familiarity with the basics of the program. I can't find anything geared to a new user.

So, can anyone help me with help?

General Software Discussion / Re: Hotspot Settings
« on: November 03, 2009, 06:47 PM »
Perhaps you need to run it initially as Admin under Vista/7 so that the settings stick ?

Currently I'm running XP on my laptop and Win7 on my desktop, both exhibit the same issue. I've tried running it as Admin, to no avail. Hmm...

Hmm. Well, I use it both on my laptop and desktop, and neither remember. I know it's possible. It retained settings when I originally used it a few years back. Maybe someone else can chime in on this...

« on: November 03, 2009, 03:07 PM »
Hello all:
Not too long ago I posted this, regarding the tiny little app, Hotspot. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to remember my setting for the enable/disable corners. I'm assuming that since I got Hotspot here, that someone here would be able to help me out with this issue. So, anyone wanna have a crack at this? I've attached the exe just in case someone needs it.

How is it that every time I post here I spark such vigorous conversation? I love it. I must wave my magical wand here more often. (Yikes, that sounds vaguely obscene. LOL.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Surprised by Win7
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:43 PM »
One thing I was (negatively) surprised by was the amount of RAM and resources Win7 uses. Especially after all the hype that went down about how much Win7 had improved over Vista in that area. Make no mistake - Microsoft's old 400 lb. gorilla is now an 800 lb. gorilla! Then again, even if Win7 is twice the size of WinXP, maybe it's not all that relevant any more. RAM is cheap enough.  And Moore's Law seems to be on Microsoft's side, so this isn't something I'm going to worry about long-term.

Hmm. I've seen a decrease in memory usage; or at least is seems that way to me. In XP everything was tied into svchost.exe, multiple ones at that. And yeah, in W7 a lot is eaten by the (fantastic) Aero business. Regarding your mention of sluggishness around folders and the desktop, I had the same problem until I got a more bitchin' video card. I knew immediately I was going to need a new card when I saw that sluggishness and the stuttering when using Media Center.

There's also another negative thing I experienced about Win7 firsthand: it's significantly slower than XP. When I first switched over, I was surprised at how 'light' Win 7 felt. But going back to an XP machine after a solid week of working exclusively under Win7 was enough to remind me just how much faster XP is across the board.

W7 felt light to me as well. I have it installed on my desktop PC, and still have XP on my laptop. I have both my desktop PC and laptop on the same desk, and I switch between the two constantly. When I turn to see my laptop it doesn't make me smile. Installing W7 is imperative at this point. I agree that after using W7 for a while it becomes apparent that XP is clunky.

General Software Discussion / Surprised by Win7
« on: October 29, 2009, 05:02 PM »
So is anyone else out there that is surprisingly pleased with Win7? I'm the average guy that uses Windows only because it's so ubiquitous and has no interest in Mac only because of the "culture shock" of switching. Actually, I should say 'above-average' guy, in that I like to do lots of tinkering and learning along the way. So when I took the plunge and installed Win7 on my desktop PC, I was dreading the hours of installing this-and-that, tweaking everything to my picky standards. But with Win7 I found myself having fun installing and tweaking, learning about all the changes and additions that this new OS had to offer. It was like I fell in love with my desktop PC all over again. Now when I look at my laptop, running XP, I start to drool, thinking about installing Win7 on it just as soon as I have my desktop PC tuned just right. (I have to have at least one machine that is 'complete' before messing with the other.) I was worried that the shiny bells and whistles would make my desktop crawl, but was pleasantly surprised by the judicious use of memory. My worries of incompatible apps were thwarted; 99% of my apps ran as smooth as silk. (Unfortunately, Stellarium isn't yet fixed to work on Win7.) The 'library' section is nice; needs some rounding out, but I love the concept. I love the total control over the system tray. I was ecstatic that my documents section was labeled 'documents', 'music', 'pictures', and not 'MY documents', 'MY music', etc. And the simplicity of C:\Users... brings on a sigh of relief.

So, am I alone on this? Is it just my heavy medications inducing Operating System Euphoria?

Skrommel's Software / Re: WinWarden Icon

Okay, I think I misunderstood you. I don't use AHK. With WinWarden I just have one exe to run. So...? LOL

Skrommel's Software / Re: WinWarden Icon
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:51 AM »
if you want me to do it, attach the icon that you want to change to and i'll do the rest. ;)

Yeah, if you don't mind doing it for me, as your instructions just went way over my head. I don't even know how to open a program to edit code. I should start learning some of this stuff. :)

Thank you in advance. You're very kind to help out!

Skrommel's Software / Re: WinWarden Icon
« on: October 26, 2009, 08:30 AM »
if you use the .ahk version then it's possible. search for the lines containing Menu,Tray, ... and add the following code:

Menu, tray, Icon, %A_WinDir%\system32\Shell32.dll, 44  ;Star Icon

if you have a particular icon, then change filename/path accordingly.

Okay, I think I am using AHK version, it you mean AutoHotKey. Keep in mind that I do not know any programming, so I have no idea of where to input that line of text you provided. So, how do I do that, and how do I change the icon????

Is there any way to change the icon for WinWarden? If so, how? Keep in mind that I'm no programmer. :)

Okay folks:
I decided to try disabling plugins in hopes of tracking down the source of the issue. Ever since I disabled "KlipKeeper" I have not had a single instance of FARR freezing up. Anyone else able to confirm this?

General Software Discussion / Simple Run Screensaver : HotSpot?
« on: October 03, 2009, 10:44 AM »
Hello all:
Years ago I had a little app called HotSpot that ran in my tray, allowing me to activate or prevent the running of the screensaver, simply by moving the pointer to a corner of the screen. I've tried finding it, but all of the links lead to a dead page. I've looked through the one-hour software here on DC but couldn't find anything similar. Did I miss it? Or does anyone know of such an app?

Okay, I've got the hang of it now. Awesome saver. I set it to display my current wallpaper, so the screen fades to just my wallpaper. Neat!

ok ill tell you what, it seems like it's happening enough that it would be useful for me to send you a debug version to try and send me info when it happens again.

Sure thing. Finally, a way to contribute to DC! :)
