Living Room / Re: Stupid Question: File Type Change: Icons
« on: April 02, 2009, 01:46 PM »
I am, however, having a hard time finding the correct icon for FLV files though. It's nowhere to be seen in the Program Files>Adobe directory. I think it's one of the problems I'm having that is forcing me to reinstall Windows, as I've discussed in another thread.

from my experiences, rebooting always makes a difference for file association icons.

HA-HA! Yes, rebooting does make a difference. LOL. Boy do I feel stupid. Thanks a million!

No, I have not rebooted. Does that make a difference? I'll really feel idiotic if that's the solution. LOL

Well it looked like it was going to work, but after refreshing several times it still won't show the icon change. I still show the "generic" file icon. The file type I'm trying to change is FLV, if that makes any difference. My other video files, such as MPG, show their respective icons. Ack! I'm frustrated! :)

I don't mean to sound rude, but your instructions are less than clear. I know how to change file types. I'm trying to convey the fact that when I change the file type, the icon does not change with it. I am left with the "generic" file icon.

Living Room / Stupid Question: File Type Change: Icons

I feel stupid asking this, but I just can't figure it out. I just changed the default program for my PDF files from Foxit to Acrobat Reader, but the icons still show up as Foxit. It does open with Acrobat Reader now, but the Foxit icons remain. How do I fix this?

Wow. Thanks so much for your help. I ran DoubleDriver, but it hung up on a few entries, so I went back and deselected them and ran it again. I ran MozBackup for both Firefox and Thunderbird. One question regarding MozBackup: Do I just run the restore when I reinstall Firefox and Thunderbird to restore all settings? Does it restore all of my emails? I saved Belarc for reference later. I think I should clarify that I am reinstalling XP from scratch, so if there's anything that should do differently from what you've said, do let me know. Other than that, I've just downloaded every setup file for all of my apps, backed up app data such as my money manager, calendar files, fonts, etc. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Man, you guys rock! Normally I would be pulling my hair out at this point, but you all have made it SOOOO much more tolerable. :)

A very interesting approach to tagging images is employed by Viewer2.  I really like it.

Ooh! Lightweight AND robust. That's rather alluring. Geez I love these buzzwords.

Any general recommendation on the sizes for partition 1 and 3?
Yes, I'd like to know recommended sizes as well. I'm using a 120GB.

That seems like a very tidy arrangement. I will definitely consider using that method. Thanks a lot!

Ah. I never thought about that. Good idea. I wish I had done that prior to this re-install. But I'll be sure to do that next time around (hopefully I won't have to).

Think about partitions.

Why would I want to partition my hard drive? It's only 120GB. Advantages?

Living Room / OS Re-install Tips?
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:19 AM »
Hello friends:
Unfortunately I'm having to re-install Windows XP on my laptop, for a number of reasons. I've been preparing for this event by downloading all of the setup files for my programs, backing up all of my application data and documents, pics, music, etc. So I thought I would ask the all-knowing DC citizens if there are any tips or tricks that I should have in mind when doing this (somewhat) colossal task. I'm trying to make this as pain-free as possible.

That reminds me of the Voynich Manuscript. Very interesting stuff.

Living Room / Digital Scrapbooking
« on: April 01, 2009, 07:26 PM »
Hello friends:
So lately I've been feeding my internal queen (I'm gay, so I have carte blanche to use that word, LOL) and found a neat little site for those of you who are interested in scrapbooking but don't want to deal with the expense and having to acquire tons of material. At scrapblog.com you can create a digital scrapbook, one page at a time. It has the usual materials such as background papers, stickers, frames for photos (you can upload quickly) and other doo-dads to create a convincing scrapbook page. No account is required, so you can just create on-the-fly using their scrapbook web app. You can also order prints, which is where I assume they make the bulk of their money. But with a registered account you can save your creations and share them with anyone. Pretty neat stuff, so I thought I'd share with you folks! Ciao!

Hello all:
I'm having some major difficulties in updating some various Adobe apps. Basically, I have Photoshop (plus Lightroom & Elements), Acrobat and Illustrator. I'm wanting to uninstall everything, wipe the slate clean and start anew. Does anyone know of an app that will ensure a complete cleanup of all the apps, their settings (in Application Data), etc.? Right now it's a total mess. Help?

scancode: Fantastic! Very much appreciated!

Cheers!

General Software Discussion / Remove Item In "Add/Remove Programs"
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:43 PM »
I'm trying to remove an item in "Add/Remove Programs". When I click "remove" it says that such-and-such file cannot be found. Normally it would ask me if I would like to remove the entry from the "Add/Remove Programs" list, but this item doesn't do that. So I go to delete the item from "Program Files" and check back to see if it asks me to remove the entry. Nope; doesn't ask. I do have "Windows Installer Clean Up" installed, but the program I'm trying to remove is not listed. So how can I remove the item from "Add/Remove Programs"? FYI the app is "SatScape", and I'm running XP Pro.

I simply can't live without All-In-One Gestures, Foxmarks, Menu Editor, Organize Status Bar, StumbleUpon and Toolbar Buttons. But really I'm in love with all of my add-ons. Apparently I have scads of add-ons compared to my friends who only have a few installed.

BTW: Foxmarks is now becoming Xmarks. I'm frightened. We don't need to change a thing. They are supposedly going to add social bookmarking features. We already have enough of those.

Okay, I'm not as tech-savvy as you guys, so bear with me here. What app, if any, should I use to clean up my RAM? Is it just something I should leave alone or do I need an app? CleanMem? Is that a good option? I need a little guidance here.

147
rgdot: Yeah, I suppose that's a good rule of thumb. I'm such a dork about stuff like that.

148
Okay, so now that I have a clean slate and can begin tagging pics, I have one question. Should the tags be in all lowercase or uppercase, or title case? Or does it even matter?

149
I need to catch up and check out those other apps you recommended. I've spent a few hours trying to coax iTag into working correctly. Though it's not designed for image viewing, it is very much geared towards tagging. The only problem is that it really can't handle large numbers of files at a time. Plus, after loading the images to be tagged iTag decides to load 'high-res' thumbnails, which is a real pain in the ass when you just want to do some basic tagging. iTag is quite 'fragile'; it hangs up when you confront it with more than a couple hundred pics. I'll try the last few suggestions after fiddling with iTag a bit more; I really want it to work. Simplicity is key for this type of app, I've learned.

Haaa, and it gets better! :D

Foxit Reader -> Preferences -> General -> History -> Restore last view settings when reopening

That feature is also available in Acrobat 8, but then I have the pro version. I also use 'stamps' to go to where I left off.
