Living Room / Network Places Auto-Generated Annoyance
« on: April 19, 2009, 02:01 AM »
Hey folks:
I've noticed that in my network places folder Windows decides it should create links for me, disregarding that I have already created my own links and labeled them to my liking. So I searched through settings and found in the control panel under "Folder Settings" a setting titled "Automatically search for network folders and printers". Will unchecking this prevent the auto-generated links? It's a rather small annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.

A Note:
I would like to see an app that sorts fonts according to type, such as serif, sans-serif, humanist, modern, etc...  But I'm guessing that information is not part of the font file.

Wow. How I managed to not find the myriad of options for font management is beyond me. Thanks for the links to prior discussions. Now I have to (happily) wade through all of the possibilities and have some fun. I do wonder, though, about installed versus uninstalled fonts and the space they take up.

Living Room / Fonts: Worth The Bloat?
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:10 PM »
Hello all (once more):
I've always had a habit of collecting fonts, and I admit I don't use all of them. What I'm wondering is: do fonts just make my system bloated despite having a relatively small footprint? I've heard many conflicting opinions on this topic. So I bring it to you, hoping to find out if I'm just fattening up my hard drive. I am in love with typography, so acquiring a large number of fonts doesn't take me long. And while I'm on the topic: does anyone know of some slick font viewing/organizing app for typographic freaks like me? Currently I use MainType and Unicode Font Viewer.

As usual, any help/suggestions/advice/irritation of my frequent posts here are much appreciated. :)

Thank you much for the abundant information!

General Software Discussion / Sysinternals PageDefrag: Good, Bad?
« on: April 09, 2009, 01:46 PM »
Anyone know about PageDefrag? Put out by Sysinternals, which, unfortunately was bought out by Microsoft. I swear by their ProcessExplorer; I use it as a task manager replacement.

I'm curious to know if it's worth anything...

Okay, I've noticed something else. Whenever I mouse over a window it automatically focuses on that window. When I move it away, the focus leaves. I haven't made any mouse changes except for its speed. What now?

X-Mouse?

Nope. I did not enable X-Mouse. Normally when something like this happens and roll back to a system restore point I just shrug my shoulders and move on. But with this issue I really want to know what caused this so I can avoid it in the future.

109
Yes, I do have TweakUI installed. But since your last post I reverted back to a restore point from last night. No problems now. Would TweakUI have caused this? Also, I feel I should mention that I was trying to consolidate my start menu shortcuts in the accessories folder. I use xplorer2 instead of Windows Explorer, so I had two panes open; one with start menu from 'all users' and the other with start menu from 'Daniel'. I did move shortcuts between the two. I don't know if that would have messed things up or not.

Start, Run, type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, and press OK and the same for this command regsvr32 ole32.dll (you may have to restart to see if that fix the problem.)

Okay, I ran both of those, but still have the same issue. I do have one question though that may or may not have anything to do with this. This morning I received an email that looked suspicious. I opened the email, but didn't click on any of the links contained therein. Would that have done anything?

PhilB66:
What exactly am I doing by running those lines? Should I backup first?

Hello folks:
Yet another stupid question from Daniel in Tulsa here. LOL. Ever since I re-installed XP I've noticed some somewhat strange behavior when arranging items within my Start Menu. Firstly, I do have it set to be able to drag-n-drop items. So here it goes: I was arranging icons within a nested folder in my Start Menu. Every time I moved the icon to its rightful place in the list the entire Start Menu collapses, forcing me to open it back up, navigate to the folder in question and repeat. Formerly I could drag-n-drop to my heart's content. It would be nice if the Start Menu folder in the users' "Documents & Settings" would allow for this, but, alas, it doesn't. Also, I do use Tidy Start Menu, but it doesn't allow for organizing the shortcuts in a desired order.

So (once again), any thoughts/suggestions?

I swear, once I can cough up the dough I'm making a substantial donation to DC. You all have been so kind and helpful.

Find And Run Robot / Alias For Dictionary App?
« on: April 09, 2009, 12:50 AM »
Hello:
I'm wanting to be able to use FARR to trigger my dictionary app to show a result. I use TheSage. I would try this myself, but I know nothing about creating aliases. But essentially I want to bring up FARR, type in a word and have TheSage open and display the result. Is this possible?

Living Room / Re: Misbehaving Tray Icon
« on: April 07, 2009, 06:32 PM »
PhilB66: Thank you very much for your consideration. I'm not computer illiterate, but I know very little about the nuts-and-bolts end of things. I heard somewhere that running scripts was bad juju, but then they may have been full of s**t.

I did notice, however, that the "save settings and exit" on line 54 is a bad link. It just took me to some random looking page, but then that may have been a script in disguise. LOL.

If I set a system restore point prior to running the script(s), would that keep things safe, just in case?

Yikes! Scripts scare me for some reason. I guess because I know nothing about them. But their descriptions sound like the answer. I think I can muster up the balls to do it though. :) Thanks for the input!

Slick! A downloadable app of this would rock. I might use it more than I do TheSage.

The only other pointing device I use with the PowerMate is my wireless mouse, but they don't conflict with one another. They in fact work quite smoothly together...

Living Room / Misbehaving Tray Icon
« on: April 07, 2009, 04:05 PM »
Hello folks:
Yet again I've got another gem of a puzzle to throw your direction. So here it goes: I have a Griffin Technologies PowerMate which I adore and use every day. When I start up my desktop, its (pointless) icon appears in the system tray. The issue is that when I set the icon to always hide (see attachment), it will not remember this setting, and therefore shows back up in the tray (unhidden) when I next restart. A friend of mine thinks this is due to the fact that in the "customize notifications" section of "taskbar and start menu properties" (again, see attachment) the item is listed as "<no title>". I think he may be on to something since everything with a name behaves perfectly.

So my question would be: Is there a "backdoor" solution to this? Maybe a registry edit to name the entry?

-->>Just in case: in the attached pic the icon I'm referring to is the silver button-like icon. If you check out the link to Griffin Technology above you'll see what I mean.

As usual, any help/input/suggestions, etc are very much appreciated!

Hello:
Well I re-installed XP and it went quite smoothly; fixed my networking issues as well as other little things that went haywire. The only real annoyance is having to tweak Firefox back to my preferences, but that's a small price to pay. Thank you all for your input!

Living Room / Re: Stupid Question: File Type Change: Icons
« on: April 02, 2009, 05:03 PM »
I am, however, having a hard time finding the correct icon for FLV files though. It's nowhere to be seen in the Program Files>Adobe directory. I think it's one of the problems I'm having that is forcing me to reinstall Windows, as I've discussed in another thread.
now, now, don't be ridiculous.  Worst case scenario, just pick any icon you like and use that for the flv icon.  i'm sure if you google for any icon you're looking for, you'll find it rather quickly.  Then, just go into Types and set it up.

PS.  My flv icons are also imageless.  I'll change it tonight.

Ha! I didn't even think to Google for the icon. Yeah, I shouldn't have said that was one of the reasons for reinstalling Windows, but I do need to reinstall it regardless - it's jacked. Thanks!

Thanks, mouser. I thought it was about time I formally introduced myself considering I'm on the forum so much lately. :)

@siouxdax I've used MozBackup where it didn't properly install saved email, so it's good, esp. if you have an external drive, to make a folder with your emails and profiles.  Also in FF, as I just found out the hard way, there's a schism between 2.x and 3.x.  MozBackup claims to span all versions of FF from 1.5 to 3.1 beta but the format of bookamarks and some other stuff is different.  If you only have one profile and try to go back to 2.x after using 3.x it prolly won't work.  Not that it's that big a deal since 3.1 beta 3 seems stable enough to me to be default browser, but you can waste time trying to go back to 2.x like if you play with Minefield then want to get your settings back from a 2.x profile or something. It can get pretty confused.

So profile copy to a folder doesn't hurt. And if you play with Minefield, might be a good idea to create another user account with a separate profile so it doesn't step on your working stuff.

How do I backup my emails in Thunderbird other than MozBackup? That's the number one concern I'm having at the moment. Everything else looks like it's falling into place.

Hello:
My name is Daniel Headrick. I'm a queer, thirty-something Jack Tripper reincarnate, born, raised and living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Artist, photographer, socialist, layabout and loveable rogue. Constantly at home, working on both my laptop and desktop simultaneously. Disabled due to Addison's disease and its complications, hence I'm always at home. Unfortunately I can't be away from home for very long, but I try to make the best of things. When I did work I was a projectionist for a few years, then went into skiptracing (basically a bounty hunter behind a desk) for a few more before becoming disabled. Avid music, art, film and reference book fan. I'm also a collector of 'objets', particularly Catholic and Hindu religious iconography; also medical and optical devices, as well as just plain 'beautiful' objects. My apartment is like a crowded curiosity museum. All in all, a total nerd, dork, etc. :)
