Don't know if this helps any or not, but if I have unrestricted access to the code and unrestricted use of the code, then it is open source.  Even if there are restrictions on distribution and licensing of it (e.g. can't host it on your own site, can't change it to remove code credit, etc.).  In fact, that occurs in a lot of open source to one extent or another.  The key, to my understanding of it, is not if it is open source or not, but rather what type of licensing you attach to it.  There are tons of them, including the "do what you want with it" license I have seen more than once around this site.  Your best bet to ensure it occurs the way you want is to write your own license for it.  That and understand that it will get co-opted and used against the license no matter what  you do or say about it, if the source is released at all.  A "hope for the best and cover your bases, but expect the worst" attitude will go a long way with that.  Oh, and it doesn't hurt to aggressively enforce the license if/when you find an infringement (e.g. email them to comply).

I sort of disagree.  It really depends on the perspective.  If I am the creator of the device, then the gadget does.  If I am the creator of the content, the content does.  If I am the creator of the app, then the app does.  The problem with the question as I see it is all three have to come together for the consumer to answer that.  In the end, it is the content that matters, the rest is just a delivery mechanism.  However, content providers make choices that directly affect those choices.  The good news is that apps (and hence the content) are much more easily designed to work on different gadgets than it is to design a gadget that works.

Almost Nonsensical Example
If app 123 is the only app that provides content ABC, then I will only look at gadgets that run 123.  Does that mean it can't be developed for gadget z34?  Nope, well, there is no reason it couldn't be other than developer choice and gadget creator's authorization (through API's, licenses, etc).  But the app designer didn't for whatever reason.  But what if z34 has something that runs content ABC, but the app is app 456?  Does that work?  Probably.  So now it is back to content is king - except now that you have device z34, app 456, and content ABC, you find content CDE that you also want, but 456 doesn't support it, only 123 does.  And app 789 runs only on z34, because that is the only device that has a wizding and you want that app too.  So what do you do?  It really is a circle of what combination of device, apps, & content deliver everything you want/need in your device.  Sure, content is king and the only real consumable, but content delivery is just as important if you want to be able to consume it.

Okay, now that I finished with that hyperbole, I agree, it is definitely the content that matters.  It is the only consumable that you care about.  How it is delivered is irrelevant as long as it IS delivered.  That is, unless you are making money on the delivery :P

If you mean the web server is the local box they will be accessing for the reviews at the classroom, you can set it up the same way and just refer back to //localhost/ if I get what you are after.  Alternatively you might be able to point to the 127.0.0.1 address which is the loopback address.  If this isn't what you mean, then it is more than just fuzzy and I am scratching my head as to your intent.

Wow, I missed this.  Sounds perfect for my busy schedule.  I never get my monies worth on most of the decent MMORPG's since I would tend to play about 3 times a week at best, and even then only for about an hour or less each.  Otherwise I would seriously have considered EVEOnline.  This sounds like it is priced right and has the play timeframe that works just about right.  I will try it tomorrow when I get home from work.

Why couldn't there be something like SQL Server or Oracle for the desktop?
There is.

Oracle Express Database
SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

I know these are probably not exactly what you were talking about (My guess is you already knew about them).  Still, they are what you asked for, even if they are not what you meant.

Also want to throw in for consideration that you look at Alpha Five.  I know they have been trying to get me to buy their product lately, but I a) don't have a need at the moment and b) don't know much about them.  I can say they claim to be geared toward web development and more recently mobile apps, but they claim they work fine for desktop apps and claim favorable comparability to Access.  Are they any good?  Don't know - that is why I offered it as something else to review.  :P

The Sphere website was down 8+ hours ago, and is still down.  Hope it's back up soon.  I want to take a gander...
Apparently it has been down for some time and has been moved to http://spheredev.org/ according to Chad Austin.  Maybe that will help?

Really?  I have only seen charging from corporations that really don't WANT to deal with it but are forced to.  I know our municipality holds regular collections free of charge

Yup! Here's the handy-dandy infographic my town has so helpfully :-\ provided it's residents:
 <image removed>
They do have two "hazardous waste" days per year where you can bring the usual stuff (pesticides, lawn & pool chemicals, small propane tanks, non-latex paints and thinners, etc.) in for free disposal. But they won't accept electronic components or devices. The only exception to their "no electrical items" rule is dead car batteries.
Yeah, we have something similar from our waste management group.  That is why they brought in the electronics recycler through.  I am still stuck on the batteries and light bulbs, however.  We have plastics picked up weekly, along with most metals (though I keep them and recycle them at the local scrap yard myself) and we have multiple HAZMAT dropoffs throughout the year for paint, oil, etc.; but the batteries and bulbs are a real bind if you are to follow their strict guidance.

As a side note, I asked the waste management official what we SHOULD do with these items.  Guess what his answer was?  "Pitch them in the trash.  We are more worried about corporate disposal of these items."  So much for concerned citizens...  Now I only buy rechargable batteries.  They are slightly more hazardous, but they are reusable for quite a while and therefore reduce the overall hazard.

Consequently, many municipalities are enacting laws that prohibit just dumping electronics in the trash. And many are now charging a fee to pass such waste on to places that can recycle, detoxify, and dispose of electronics safely. (Which has the unintended consequence of encouraging illegal dumping - but that's a topic for another day.)
Really?  I have only seen charging from corporations that really don't WANT to deal with it but are forced to.  I know our municipality holds regular collections free of charge (and no, that doesn't mean it is paid for by taxes - more on that in a minute).  There is quite a bit of valuable material that goes into each machine, and if you can dismantle it, you can make a pretty penny selling it back to the suppliers.  The key is dismantling enough of them, fast enough, and completely enough to make it profitable.

There are a few outfits around Pittsburgh that specialize in this.  They will take all machines from a company, guarantee nothing will end up in a landfill, complete with written proof if needed.  They dismantle, separate, and in many cases shred components to get at the metal.  Once all the metals are collected, they use various methods to separate them and sell them on the open market (this is where they make their money).  Even the plastic is shredded into reusable material (though I don't know for what purpose - perhaps they can be reused for making new boards, but more than likely they would be used as a lower grade plastic for something else).  I was talking to the owner of the one that I provided about 6 old systems to and he said that he needs to be able to dismantle 3-6 (depending on machine age - older = fewer) machines/worker/hour to break even.  He said it is difficult because of how much needs dismantled, but he has a process.  This is why he can do this free of charge for the municipalities and even local companies.  He even does the pickup - the only thing he wont do is take it from the desktop.  It needs to go to a collection point and he takes it from there.  I got his card for my company because I know they use HP for this service now, and I think HP charges them for it.

The options dialog allows you to set the "auto fade interval" and "overlay color". Maybe that's what you need?

I was thinking more along the lines of setting a set time of day, such as bedtime, or time to start work.  Essentially it becomes an alarm you can't just say "okay, just one more minute" and 30 minutes later "Oh *hit, I am late!".  Having the fade interval allows it to recover so you can close down, but the fade, especially during a game, can be killer and make it pointless to the "one more minute" idea.  Of course I suppose a valid work around could be to set up a higher frequency fade interval (ever 30 seconds for example) and use a scheduled task to start it up...

Again, I realize this is completely outside of the purpose of this software, I am just thinking outside the box on one way I can see myself using something like this for my kids.

If you still have the archive server to go back to, can't you Dif the registry?  Alternatively, can you make a copy and transfer it to the new server to make it work?  I get the feeling I missed something and these have already been done, but I just have to ask.

186
I realize this isn't it's purpose, but I could see something like this being particularly useful to parents and gamers to fade in the middle of  a game or whatever.  The only thing needed to make this work would be to be able to set a specific time for it.  Perhaps a different color so one, the other, or both features could be used together?  Just some other peripheral ideas to throw out there.

I like your additions 40hz.  My one exception is 4b.  In technology, Never, Ever, Ever, buy something just because it will last.  All that means is it will reach obsolesence long before it loses its utility.  For technology, I strongly suggest 4a only.

Experience has taught me - sure, you might have to replace something that breaks several times that one long lasting one will be cheaper in the long run.  However, technology moves so fast that if it is ease to fix you can a) fix it quickly, b) often can fix it cheaply, and c) fix it with a superior product featureset.  How many of you still have and use your old zip drives?  They sure do last, but no one reall uses them anymore, and can you even find drivers for them in Vista/Win7?

General Software Discussion / Re: Easier way of learning HTML
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:12 AM »
As I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum, I can't suggest strongly enough that you check out HTML Dog for the HTML4 & CSS.  The author has laid out a beautiful and simple tutorial that teaches these two topics together, the way they should be taught.  It also lends itself to XHTML which is syntactically and conceptually very similar to HTML4.  It is broken down into 6 parts (beginner, intermediate, advanced for HTML & CSS respectively) that not only teach you how to code correctly, but why it is correct and what to watch out for.  He also has a book that is essentially a paper reference of the same topics/subjects as the site provides.

It doesn't cover Javascript or HTML5 (at least not yet), and XML is only covered peripherally, but they are outside the scope of the site anyway.  Well HTML5 may not be, but that is new enough to be forgiven for the moment anyway. :P

Just for reference, W3 schools have been the preeminent resource everyone points to, but I always found them to be rather confusing or at very least not particularly conducive to learning.  It is obviously just me, but I have found this htmldog.com site to be MUCH easier covering much of the same information in a clearer and more concise manner.  Hope that helps.

189
Looks like that is a fairly common way of using the forums as I do exactly the same thing.  And yes, I see the same thing too.  I generally just ignore them. (Unless there are replies that is).

Problem is it isn't just the code. It's obtaining content. That's where they got blindsided.

Except they already had the content.  They got the agreements with the publishers, they had the required DRM, and they had the application on a viable platform.  The only thing that changed was the payment rules of the platform.  Therefore, if possible, change platform and keep on trucking.  Of course that is the caveat, isn't it?

191
Agreed.  They didn't have the chance to fail, and that is what really sucks.  My only question is what about the other players out there?  Android, Windows Phone, RIMM, etc.  iProducts are not the only ones out there, and Microsoft, in particular is reaching to those developers to develop on the Windows Phone platform as well.  Perhaps they can/could have salvaged the company by diversification and dropping Apple like a bad habit.  Just a thought.

192
I can tell you what we do at our (large) company if that helps.  The user has a toll-free number to call in to the help desk, a web form, or an email box.  All 3 go to the first level help desk.  Assuming the help desk can't fix the issue outright (they have some rights to fix certain regularly occurring simple fix items); they then generate a ticket based on the information.  If that isn't enough information, they call the user back to get the additional information needed.  Once that occurs, the desk-side support group (or networking or whatever other group is appropriate) takes the ticket and works on it from there.  It isn't a perfect system, but it works pretty good and meets the balance of user convenience, IT support convenience, issue tracking, and information gathering that the company expects out of the system.

Ah, but you notice I never mentioned Iraq, or Afghanistan, or any other location.  I am speaking of the Jihad war that was waged on the entire non-muslim world.  If you want to drag Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other country into it, be my guest.  The war occurs everywhere.  But claiming that the Iraq war IS the war on terrorism is just wrong.

Bah.  All I hear here is about how he should have had a trial.  Does everyone forget the 26 February 2002 trial hearing in absence?  He was tried, found guilty, and sentenced already! Entire case docket can be found here http://cryptome.org/usa-v-ubl-dt.htm This is in a U. S. Federal Court, agreed, but there was no condemnation then - I don't see why there is so much condemnation now.  To many people forget.  No wonder there are so many Nazi sympathizers in the world today.  They too forget the horrors of WWII.  I agree, there is no reason to ever cheer for the death of another, but there is certainly no reason to grieve or to complain about his death either unless you truly are a sympathizer to his cause.  I, for one, am not.

BTW:  Renegade said it best regarding the rejoicing:
Compare pictures of people rejoicing after 9/11 and the recent pictures of people doing the same thing over Osama. It's the same thing - people screaming for blood.

Lastly I want to note how so many of you remember the just under 3000 tower victims and the uncounted thousands on the other side of the issue, but none seem to remember the others:  USS Cole, Kohbar Tower, and the first World Trade Center bombings just to name 3 of the most notorious occurrences that never get counted.  That also doesn't include the over 5000 US combatants since the war was declared.  If you are going to count ALL victims, count them all on both sides.  It is in the 10s or 100s of thousands on both sides.  I am sicked by these numbers but more for those on the side of the US and it's allies as many more of those were not even aware they were at war during the war and attacks.  It is only the 5000 or so combatants and perhaps a few 100 civilians who have died since the war was declared on the side of the US & allies.  As much as it sickens me to see the jubilee at anyone's death, it sickens me as much when I hear appologists  complaining about the casualties inflicted upon the opponent while ignoring our own that caused the war in the first place! >:(

I don't know much about Apache, but just thinking out loud here.  Isn't there a way to tell the server to stop sending checks so that it always forces a download?  It isn't an ideal solution, but if it is something like mouser's SIGKILL find, that wouldn't matter if it always proceeded with a new download.  Alternatively, couldn't a check file be sent at the end of the downloads and when a new download starts it looks for that file (something like a pad file).  If the file doesn't match some criteria (like being present) then it proceeds with a new download.  Then a new file signature would need to be added to the end of every new version of a software download, but that is okay...isn't it?  Of course I could be talking far too high level here to be useful, but it was an idea as a work around until the culprit could be caught.  At very least if it continues you will know it is at the network level and not at the server level.

197
Glad to hear it!  I found it just yesterday on AlternativeTo when I was looking for Cameyo.  This is another free one like enigma that may, or may not do what you were looking at.  AlternativeTo has a few others in the category as well.  I personally was just seeing what was out there as an alternative to VMware ThinApp which I know is a great product, but rather expensive for individual use - like most VMware products.

What I wonder that some visitors here debate my tone in great extend while having any slightest problem with the tone/accusations of the original poster at all. Stunning!
-BartelsMedia (April 20, 2011, 11:53 AM)
It is quite simple.  The OP is an original poster who claims to watch, but we have no proof they know the way DC works.  Moreover, there is no indication they will ever return and no response, good or bad, will likely ever be given the time.  You, on the other hand, have been here for quite some time, are aware of the policies and tenor of the site, and have proven you will return and respond to all posts.  Therefore, it is quite likely you will read this criticism and, perhaps, internalize it thereby changing the way you respond in the future.  It may work to your benefit, maybe not.  Either way it helps the original respondent provide a way to let you know what they think of your response.  If you didn't respond, it is likely it would not be debated like this - just like the OP.  However, since you responded, it gets debated.  Human nature.

IF I remember correctly, I had a similar issue with my Gigabyte MB.  I used the onboard NIC connectors and it was actually the sleep that did it.  I set it to never go to sleep and it stopped being a problem...or it could have been the conflict with the IR port.  I always turn that off too, since I never use it.

Anyway those would be my first two suggestions off the top of my head.

If I were to take a wild guess, I would say it is a conflict with Filing Cabinets.  Have you tried disabling Filing Cabinets and starting it up, just to see if that was the cause?  At very least it would rule out that as a conflict.
