Chris, what a bummer.  Ace.exe still alive and kicking, even with your new version.  I can see it in Windows Task Manager.  And terminating from WTM really does kill it dead in its tracks.

What about just simply doing the kill part?  I'll load the program first.  Then double-click a c.gingerich "Kill."  And in xx minutes the program gets friggin nuked!!

"Kill" can ask for the program name to be nuked (same as what WTM shows, ace.exe), and the time to wait before nuking.  Maybe no need for user to even enter a path (in ini file), as, in present example, ace.exe is the only one with that name running.

"Kill" would be adding for user just the one additional step of starting the initial program first, before running the "Kill" grand terminator.

327
Strange case....  AceReader Pro.  Set "RunAndKill" to terminate it after ONE minute.  When the one minute is up, the RunAndKill icon in the system tray disappears, but AceReader appears totally unaffected, still continues on uninterrupted.

Here's the ini file line specifying one minute:

killtime=00:01:00

Some additional weirdness about this particular AceReader program:

-- the AceReader exe requires an additional parameter, "Server"

I typed this parameter into the RunAndKill ini file, following the exe path as follows:

exe="C:\Program Files\AceReader Pro\ace.exe" Server

-- AceReader requires being started from WITHIN a certain directory, "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AceReader Pro\"

In order to accomplish this, I decided to copy RunAndKill, plus the ini file, INTO that folder.  Then I created a shortcut to it on my desktop.

Any idea why AceReader doesn't get KILLED, like it's supposed to??

By the way, using Windows Task Manager... I can see ace.exe running, and I can End Process, and AceReader does get terminated.  Same as I was hoping RunAndKill would do.

Much thanks,
Nicholas Kormanik

Both programs are gems.  As are so many others created here.

Terribly sorry for not responding sooner.  For some reason I wasn't notified that anyone did anything on this project request -- must have forgotten to check "Notify me of replies."  Just assumed no one was interested, or that it was too hard to accomplish.  Wow.  Lots of action going on here!  How exciting.

Test Results:  "File Groupie" worked flawlessly.  Hip hip hooray!!!

Thank you very much Chris Gingerich, and all of you that tested and helped bring this useful program about.

My Test:

File Groupie version 1.0.2.1

64,709 files totalling 55.1 GB, all in one single folder

Moving files to Target Folder: c:\FGed

Files per sub-folder: 1000

Sort files by: Size - Smallest to Largest

Left the optional settings blank.

Hit "Run"....

Reading the files took 8 minutes.

Sorting took 26 minutes.

Processing took 5 minutes.

Output Results:
(note that file sort order worked!  size-low early on, to size-high later)

Folder  File Bytes      Files

I think it has more to do with some other program I happen to be running concurrently, frankly.  In other words, my fault.  Not yours.

Not worth your valuable time and effort.  You've already give A LOT.

Okay..., not "flawless" here either.  But highly acceptable.

Occasionally (repeat OCCASIONALLY) FolMon will freeze up, and stop counting the new files as they are added to the folder being monitored.

In those rare cases I simply close FolMon, and restart it.  And then it seems to work fine.

I've been using FolMon a lot.  And it has been a really useful addition to my arsenal.

I feel the issue is NOT worth fooling with.  Work-around for the rare freezes is easy enough.  Leave well-enough alone.

Post New Requests Here / Separate out and move files to subfolders
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:23 PM »
Suppose we have a large collection of images (.jpg) in one single folder -- 120,000 of 'em.

We would like to move these image files to separate subfolders, 1000 per subfolder.

I presently have a way of doing this, but it's fairly tedious.

Wondering if someone might like to write a program to to it automatically.

Here's how I'm imagining it might work:

Fire up program.  Several questions are asked:

-- Where are the files you want to separate out?

(possible answer: c:\images)

-- Where do you want to move these files to?

(possible answer: c:\separated)

-- How many files per subfolder?

(possible answer: 1000)

-- In what order are the files to be moved?

(possible answer:  smallest to largest)

-- Press proceed when ready....

After program runs, there will be, say, 120 new folders in c:\separated:

c:\separated\001
c:\separated\002
c:\separated\003
.
.
.
c:\separated\120

Each of these subfolders will contain 1000 files.  From smallest (in subfolder 001) to largest (subfolder 120).

What do you think?  If there exists a way already out there, please let me know.  I'd greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Nicholas Kormanik

Outstanding, c.gingerich.  Even better than what I had in mind.  A really useful tool.

Hope others, too, will be able to find this and put it to use.

Thanks so much!

335
Fantastic, c.gingerich.  Yes, by "absolute" I mean it shouldn't matter which file is placed first or second, either can be newer or older, or the same.

Without absolute value, if newer file is placed first, the result would be a negative number.

I see no problem giving a negative number, if it makes programming any easier.  But I'm guessing most people would like to simply see a positive number (absolute value).

By the way, regarding my request here, I am primarily interested in the TIME difference between the two files.  In a single folder (subdirectory) output is being generated -- 16,000 files -- the whole process takes around three hours.  I'd like to be able to see that total time taken by using such a program as I request -- put in the first-created file, and the last-created file, press enter, presto, roughly total time of the entire process.

There is an initial file in that folder that is from a "pre-process," with an earlier time/date.  So simply grabbing the earliest date and the most recent date wouldn't give the desired answer.

Thanks a bunch!

Here's the idea:  Window comes up with two sub-windows on left and right.

Drag a file to the inside left sub-window.

Drag another file to the inside right sub-window.

Click Okay.

Up pops amount of time (absolute) between the two files.  ('Modified' file time/date preferred.)

Thanks!

4wd, not a single freeze all day long.  I think you put your finger on it.

Thanks!

I've been finding FolMon really useful, 4wd.  Recently running into an issue, though.

Just on a fast Windows 7 machine.  Occasionally FolMon freezes.  I know the number of files in the monitored folder keeps increasing.  But FolMon keeps showing the same numbers, at the point of freeze.

I use Windows Task Manager to kill the current instance, and start up a new instance.  Numbers jump up to actual.  Going along fine for a while.  Then freezes again.

Don't want to fiddle with something that works so well.  Mostly just wanted to inform you, more than anything else.

Thanks again!

Sometimes it's just toooo easy to push the download button.

Thanks for those suggestions.

341
Tentatively here is the program idea.  A window comes up asking for the following:

Root folder __________ (full path. example, c:\downloads).

If a subfolder off root folder, using recursive examination, has more than __________ (give number. example, 10)

of the file type __________ (provide file type. example, jpg)

then move the entire subfolder to the following location __________ (full path. example, c:\jpg)

Let's suppose c:\downloads has several hundred downloads from torrents, etc.  At some point all the subfolders in there have to be arranged and put into their proper places.  Quite a chore.

The proposed program would help with this process.  Subfolders with a bunch of jpg images could be pulled out and placed into an appropriate location.  Same with pdf, epub, and some others.

Would help a lot with the needed re-arranging, housekeeping, management.

Any thoughts?  Already been done??

Thanks,
Nicholas Kormanik

Getting better all the time....

343
c.gingerich, RunAndKill works like a charm.  Does exactly what I asked for.  Thank you!

What more did you want to do with it??

I also want to thank the others for their suggestions.  Really helpful folks here.

344
Good point, MilesAhead.  In this particular case let's assume no problem terminating.  Nothing to save.  No disk writes to complete.

Just kill it.  After xx:xx time.

Researching out there, others have asked for such a program, and apparently none exists.

345
Here is the idea:

Defaults held in an .ini file.  All set and ready to go.  Desktop shortcut.

New Program will start any program, PGM, user wants (program executable location held in .ini file).

After a certain amount of time (xx:xx, held in .ini file) the New Program will terminate PGM, and exit completely leaving zero memory footprint.

The chief purpose of this New Program is at the termination end -- stopping PGM after a certain amount of time.  If there is already an existing way to accomplish this, please let me know.

Anyone interested??

Thanks much.

Thanks Skwire for this handy little program.

Will be interesting to follow what sort of "enhancement requests" it generates.

-- Probably the first would be "auto-update" -- one minute, five minute, etc.

-- Add in some additional available fields.  Open, high, low, close, volume.

-- Another really useful one -- and may not presently exist out there; for sure not free -- would be creation of a log file for some particular security.  With ability to bring the log file into Excel, etc.  One could easily then see the daily trend, or two days, or however much data the log file holds.

The above item would be particularly good for specific options prices, as that data tends to disappear and is not retrievable anywhere.

SnapTimer is PERFECT, particularly knowing about the set-zero suggestion.  Couldn't ask for a better choice.

And Tranglos' Ethervane Stopwatch is a super good one, too.

Thanks to both of you!

Skwire... DONE!

348
Maybe this already exists, or can be done with some batch file.  If so, let me know.

Shortcut on desktop.  Double-click.  Timer window comes up and starts counting up automatically.  In HH:MM:SS format.

No need even for a stop button.  Can simply be able to close the window/program.

Count-up window and digits should be large enough to be able to easily see.  Preferably allow user to select colors of digits and background, to suit their mood.

A zillion advanced timers out there in cyberland.  But not what I'd like as described above.

All help greatly appreciated.

Skwire, magic indeed.  Works like a charm.

And guess what, ALL my Excel xls column headers/labels lined up perfectly in the output text file your program created, exactly the same in each line, all the way down to the last.  So I can now be certain that a vertical concatenation of all the files should be doable.

I thought of asking for the additional way of knowing which file might be in error, should one be, but didn't want to add to the request.  Very glad you anticipated the need and built it in.

Only change I'd make is to rename it.  YOU deserve all the credit, Skwire.

Thanks a million!

You can mark this really tasty snack as DONE.

350
Max number of columns would be 250.

That large number means it'll be lots of work without some magic.
