Post New Requests Here / Create Song Playlist
« on: May 17, 2023, 02:46 AM »
Most of us have large repositories of music.

Assume all music is contained in one folder, and sub-folders within that main folder.

I'd like to find a small simple program that can randomly select a number of songs, and send the list to a player program, my preferred is AIMP.

Ideally user should be able to type in a name to look for.  But if no name provided, just include all the files in the folder as potentials.

For instance:  Elton John

Then the number of randomly selected songs to come up with.

For instance: 50

That is, less than or equal to.  There might be only a few Elton John songs.

Then, where to send the created song list.

For instance:  AIMP

An alternative idea would be to copy the songs to another folder.  For instance, if all the songs are on an external USB drive, those songs can be copied to, say, local drive C:  And then played.

Any thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated.

Such a program may already exist, but I haven't found it.

Although, I sort of remember that PowerShell might be able to do this.

Thanks!

Goodness, Vic!  Am I in heaven, or what?!

"Open Windows Explorer to a specific drive on next restart."

More precisely, BOOT UP to that particular drive on next restart.

How people presently do this:
-- via bios setting
-- pressing a key at a particular point during startup
-- via Windows settings, restart to particular device

I think the best idea is through a desktop shortcut, if possible.

Thanks to KynloStephen66515 as well!

By the way, I really like Ventoy on a flash drive to boot up to -- packed with relevant .iso files to then load as desired, such as Aronis, WinPE, etc.  Wonderful technology.

It's getting the computer to easily reboot to that flash drive that's the challenge.

Vic, no changes to top specifications.  I was just wondering how changing window size will affect dot size.  Or, in a smaller window, will dots be showing up outside the window, and, thus, not actually be seen.

Really, any way you accomplish the overall objective will be terrific.

Maybe others here will have some comments.

Thanks a million!

Vic, searching the web turned up the following:

https://github.com/v...andom-dots-generator

Download the .zip.  Extract.  Double-click on index.html.

Dots Amount = 1.  Radius = 10.

Have you experience in graphics programming?  I sense your programs heretofore have not involved graphics.  Hope this won't be something that keeps you away from what you prefer.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

What should be a piece of cake often seems ridiculously hard.

Restart computer, and open to a specific USB thumb drive.

Create script/batch file to accomplish this.  Or even a little program.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

« on: May 05, 2023, 02:42 AM »
Prologue:  To read maximally our eyes must move rapidly.  Some of us are lucky to naturally develop this at an early age.  It might still be possible for others of us to learn later.

The idea of the asked-for program is to help with reading development.

Disclaimer:  No guarantees.  Use at your own risk.

=====

Objective:  Randomly paint a dot in a graphics screen (programmer's choice)

In, say, an .ini file within program folder, user provides the following information:

-- Dot color (default=red)
-- Size of dot (default=100 pixels)
-- Background color (default=white)

-- Ability to do it again.  Preferably automatically, with xxx milliseconds between each iteration.  (default=250)

-- Finally, a timer value for the program to keep going until time is up.  (default=3 minutes)

So, upon execution the program will show a series of dots appearing on the screen, just one at a time, in various random places.  Once time is up, (say in 3 minutes) program can terminate.

In summary, double-click on desktop shortcut, program comes up, does it's thing, and terminates after specified time.

Possible complication: Size of graphics window.  If user adjusts size of window, what happens to the dots?  Do some fall outside the window?  Do the dots become smaller, in proportion to the window size?  Does the program remember window position?  Hmmm....

Thanks a million!

Vic, even with system setting for allow long path, seems individual programs choke.  Individual programs themselves have to allow for long paths.  If they do, and Windows setting is set to allow, then no problem.

An increasing number of programs are allowing/handling long path length.  One example that I often use is TreeSize.  TreeSize, more meant for other uses, at least shows directories and files exceeding 256 characters in length in red, thus allowing one to rename to shorter path, from within TreeSize.  Upon 'refresh' of the folder, the now-shortened path will be in the usual black font.

The problem comes in when you have many, many sub-folders/sub-files.  In TreeSize one would have to search through the long list and individually do the renaming of all the 'red' font folders, could be twenty or thirty, whatever.  A bit of a chore.

As all I care about in my particular case are the actual end files -- example, .mp3 files, or .epub files -- it's really nice to have Flatten that can dump all files into the base folder.  Works great!  EXCEPT when some nested file path exceeds 256.  Then Flatten chokes.

33
Vic, while I have your attention, Flatten is still giving this error message when it encounters long path items:

Flatten Error.png

34
Given a text file.  And given that we are interested in the first 20 characters to base a tally on.

How many lines are there for each different first 20 characters?

For instance, in the following:

http://62.182.86.140
http://62.182.86.140
http://62.182.86.140
http://libgenfrialc7
http://libgenfrialc7

There are 3 of http://62.182.86.140
There are 2 of http://libgenfrialc7

Thoughts and help greatly appreciated!

@KodeZwerg, if you have a minute more, would you mind telling us how you wrote your program, the computer language?  Just a few hints.

v0.0.0.3 released
I hope to hear from you a positive result.

@KodeZwerg, nailed it.  Works like a charm.  Found that it can be included in the SendTo list, so that one doesn't even have to install it.  And, thus, too, the shortcut to program can be renamed.  "Folders, Rename to Random"

Thanks for working at this!

Victor, looking forward to your solution!
I am just curious while Vic is busy, ain't my app doing what you wanted it to do?

I tried your program many times on a number of folders.  If simple hierarchy, worked file.  Trouble was, seemed to do nothing on larger folder hierarchies.  Problem could be that the larger folders have path length issues, greater than 255 characters.  Bummer.  If that's the case, probably Victor will run into the same, and come up short.

Long folder/file path problem has plagued me forever.  Wish Windows didn't have the limitation.  What I'm wanting are just the files in the furthest branches.

Enhancement Requests (again):

1.  Long path issues still a big problem.  Preferred would be to deal with as many files as possible before quitting when finding that one or more files has a path length problem.  Seems presently that FFM looks through folder to be flattened, and gives up as soon as a long folder/file path length issue is noticed.  Please, just keep chugging on, and tell user at the very end that long folder/file path length issue was observed, and couldn't flatten just those files, but everything else was a success.

2.  Receive error message, Can't flatten if file already exists.  Please simply add a number suffix to any files that same-named file already exist.  This was supposedly already the case, however.  Maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks Victor!

Post New Requests Here / Rename FOLDERS in hierarchy
« on: February 17, 2023, 12:01 AM »
Given:  Folders and files in some hierarchical structure.

Objective:  Rename the FOLDERS only, not the files.

Rename to XXXXX random digits.  Perhaps the number of random digits can be left to user.  But, let's say, for example, 5 random digits.

So, long folder name:  blah, blah, blah, blah.....

Change to:  39279  (for instance)

Do this for each and every folder in the entire hierarchy, including the base folder.

Program can be used from context menu, or drag-and-drop, or command line, or other.

Why this program??

To deal with long path length issues.  Major headache when, say, unarchived paths exceed 255 characters.  Good grief.  Just horrible.

Idea is to easily deal with extra long paths by changing folder names to short sets of random digits.

Thanks much!

You folks have so many good answers, thankful you all are here.

45
@tomos and @4wd  Thanks!

On "scripting," any comments as to what you have found to work well in most of the cases you've encountered?

Autohotkey, Powershell, Python....  C#??

46
Suppose the following:

Overall Parent Folder: Various

Sub-Folder 1:
1001.part1.rar
1002.part2.rar

Sub-Folder 2:
2001.part1.rar
2002.part2.rar
2003.part3.rar

...

Sub-Folder 99:
9901.part1.rar
9902.part2.rar

I would really, really like to find a way to automatically recursively travel throughout the overall initial parent folder, into each sub-folder, and extract each set of archives therein to that relevant sub-folder.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

PublicDomainVic / Re: Keep icons arranged in a folder
« on: May 13, 2022, 12:46 AM »
Let's remind ourselves of the objective:

1. Given limited desktop space...
2. Arrange a rather large 'project' atop the desktop...
3. In a matrix, of sorts; across, then down...
4. Arrangement of said project is critical...
5. Sequences, one step, then next step, then next...
6. Then, at some point, gather it all up, suitcase it...
7. Preferably into a single icon (folder)...
8. Expand as needed to exactly the configuration it had been in...
9. Contract/shrink down to single folder, then, again...
10. Back and forth, as needed.

Example of layout on desktop:
1.01  1.02  1.03  ... 1.25
2.01  2.02  2.03  2.04  ... 2.17
3.01  3.02  3.03 ... 3.09
4.01  4.02

Suitcased:
Project#1 (one single folder)

There may be quite a number of various ways to layout and keep in some order a large project.  I would imagine that ALL project designers and managers MUST have some sort of system.

For not just one single project, but many, ongoing.

If some of you out there follow a system, please share your ideas.

My personal preference, at this particular point, is NOT what is written above, but would be to have available/accessible an unlimited number of initially-empty actual desktops.  With the ability to save the exact layouts of each and every one.  Icons, folders, links, etc.  And ability to backup and restore, to external media.

Thanks!

Nicholas Kormanik

Wow, Vic, you actually did it.  Great job.  Keep on going.

Change File Name.  Then change it back to what it was.

Hi Nick, I'm in with nkNameFlip @ https://github.com/p...licdomain/nknameflip

nkNameFlip is all that's desired presently, Victor.  Thanks!

Such function might be useful for others, too.  Changing a filename.  And then later changing it back to what it was.  Seems like a reasonable tool to have on hand.

I'm curious if anyone out there has come across an easy way to do this.  If so, please speak up.

50
I'm pretty sure you can rework that SAS script to accept a filename in a variable (never used or interpreted SAS script, but did a quick google search on it), so executing the script while passing the filename(s) should be really doable.
This is only to avoid getting stuck with a 'one trick pony' tool ;D
And adjusting the script will improve someone's skills, if not yours :P

You are exactly right, @Ath.  My life as a complete amateur in programming is 'one trick pony.'  Move along day to day here at the computer until some hurdle comes up, and then attempt to find the solution to get over that hurdle.

I suppose that's one of the main differences between non-programmers and programmers.  You folks build a large steady base, and have and know a plethora of tools, and versatility to use them appropriately.

You are indeed correct that there exist tools in SAS to accomplish passing filenames.  I've been having a discussion regarding this on the SAS forums.  Hate wasting your time, but here's the link:
