I just wonder.. I'm loving ACDSee 9 but simply don't seem to understand how to organize pictures with it effectively. I like to use tagging and to date, I've found nothing better than to organize pictures with tags than Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. I'd like to do the same in ACDSee 9 because it's more powerful and starts up faster.. but don't see how.

Glad to hear :). The author's very busy and mC's development has really been a tough process.. I also learned that mC v2.0 plans have already been made. It has been looked into, discussed to some degree.. and that's all there is. There sure as hell aren't any solid plans for it AFAIK, but what's important to note is that thoughts about it have been had by people who could make it a reality. It's a nice thought! Still.. let's look forward to v1.0 and hope that development continues :)

I know something you don't :D. musikCube 1.0 final should be done within the next 8 weeks. Nothing terribly exciting, but I'm just saying.. I found it in mC's IRC channel, where the program's author told me ;)

mC is one amazing music player. It doesn't recognize my Zen as a device though.. and that's too bad. Otherwise I'd say mC is all I'd need! I really hope mC development picks up in the future :)

I must add to that that Notmad is getting very good reviews: http://www.redchairs...com/notmad/raves.php
I'll try it out and see for myself.

um, well it integrates with the windows shell yes. Have you actually read what it does.
That's the part I dislike. I'd prefer for this type of app to have its own interface without tying into Windows Explorer. What good does that do, anyway? I might try it out, actually, just to see for myself how it works..

Dont know what to say about the jukebox software because quite frankly havent found anything has a better interface than itunes, specially with large collections. Ive` got a creative ZEN and i use itunes to listen play on my machine and red chair softwares excellent notmad to deal with all the transfering and syncing.

Oh boy.. an interface that ties into Windows Explorer.. :/. Not sure about that. It doesn't look special, really.. at least judging by the screenshots.

I guess I'll stick to MediaMonkey for now.

Haven't tried it myself, so I have no idea of how good it is... or if it's actually any good at all.
It's like itunes, just made in XUL
Songbird
That's one of those that was also in the back of my mind and that I failed to mention. I'm aware of Songbird. It looks great. Problem is: it does not support synching with portable music players yet. It's got just about everything else, but not that crucial feature.

Judging by this page, MediaSource player really is nothing special: http://www.creative....s/musicdownloads.asp
Creative on the whole is not exactly known for making good software, either :)

General Software Discussion / Best jukebox that is NOT iTunes?
« on: September 23, 2006, 02:31 AM »
I'm looking for the best music jukebox application for Windows. I'm currently using MediaMonkey but can't say that I'm all that impressed. iTunes' interface really is great, and I just like the way it lists artists in the top left, albums in the top middle and songs in the top right.. and then just gives you the list of everything in the biggest space on the bottom. It makes sense. It's also how the amazingly good music player musikCube's interface is organized. It makes sense because it allows for fast and effective browsing of your music library. MediaMonkey has no such view and what it offers simply is not that impressive to me. MediaMonkey has also thrown duplicate music files on my player here and there and offers no feature to rid your player OR library of duplicates. The reason I ask, clearly, for an alternative to iTunes is because I don't use an iPod. I use a Creative Zen Vision: M and am on the lookout for the best digital music manager out there.

I'm not familiar with MP3 Collector by Collectorz.com, haven't tried AlbumPlayer recently, haven't touched JetAudio in quite a while, don't much care for QMP at the moment because it's STILL in beta, and well.. that's about what I'm aware of. I'm sure there are a few more somewhere in the back of my mind that I can't recall. Be that as it may, I now turn to you to find out what you use to organize your MP3's and sync them with your NON-iPod player if you have one.

I need NO tagging features by the way.. I'm all covered by MusicBrainz' Picard tagger as well as MP3Tag for those manual tagging jobs. That doesn't mean I'm looking for solutions that LACK features related to tagging specifically.. not at all, if that's in there, hey, that's cool. It makes sense for tagging features to be included in software that's supposed to help you manage your music library. All I'm saying is that I don't need those features :)

Suggestions?

General Software Discussion / Re: ACDSee 9.0 available
« on: September 23, 2006, 02:20 AM »
I love ACDSee 9 but it seems to me that it's lacking in the organization department.. and that's what's most important to me. It's definitely much less of a beast than is Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0.. but the latter beats ACDSee in just about every way imaginable when it comes to image organization. Too bad :(

How does it compare to SnagIt? That's what I use :)

What the hell? Direct Folders was just updated to v3.1..

87
As much as I like MP3Tag, I don't use it very often these days. Why? Because MusicBrainz' Picard takes care of all my tagging work.. and automatically, at that. I mean, shit, you can't beat automatic, now, can you :)
If I do have to edit something specific in multiple MP3 files that is tag-related, nothing else but MP3Tag is what I'd use.. but since these days all I have is albums in MP3 form, really, Picard is nothing short of amazing for taking care of the tagging job for that :)

I still love MP3Tag just as much as I ever have. I'm just saying Picard does everything automatically, so the manual editing I *would* do with MP3Tag just falls away as a consequence ;)

General Software Discussion / Sweet! Direct Folders 3.0 released :)
« on: September 18, 2006, 10:08 PM »
The one I liked best among the tools listed here, http://donationcoder...Extenders/index.html, Direct Folders, the one I wanted to buy and the one whose author I emailed, asking if he was still actively developing the tool because I wouldn't want to spend money on dead software, the best dialog extender I've ever tried, personally, has been updated to v3.0! That's awesome! For months now, I've been holding back on installing apps of this type just because I really liked Direct Folders but did not want to use it unless I knew that it was still in development. You can imagine that learning that it was just updated solved all my problems :)

Just installed! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)

This also marks my first post here in a while. I've missed you all :(

I use NOD32 mainly because of its excellent performance and powerful protection.
It has saved me quite a few times these years.
I am so happy that I even help to sell copies of NOD32 to many of my customers, so far more than 50 copies (newcomers+renewal).

Scot Finnie's emphasis on scanning outgoing mail is "hard to understand", at least for me...
If the best 2006 antivirus can secure one from being attacked, isn't that means his/her PC is always clean, so why scan mail going out from a known "clean PC" ?

Where's the thumbs-up featuere here? Great post. That's exactly what I thought.. I was irritated by the emphasis on outgoing email scans as well. I'm a proud NOD32 user as well :). It's my second (third?) year of using it and I couldn't be happier. I feel perfectly safe with it and see it updating its virus database all the time. I never have to mess with it and just let it do its job.

The only thing keeping me from sticking with MLO is price. It really is rather expensive.

Uninstall Tool looks like a very good choice in the freeware category. I still like and use Your Uninstaller! Pro 2006.

* moerl thinks this HAS to get on the Great Software List. Clonespy, which is there now, doesn't even compare IMHO. I never liked Clonespy's interface. Not all that intuitive.. and when you HAVE TO read a help file to use a program effectively.. I'd say it's a bad sign.

I vote for DoubleKiller to replace CloneSpy on the Great Software list :D. Hell, I like even Duplicate File Finder (free!) better than CloneSpy.

All I can say is CONGRATULATIONS! I'm proud to hang out in the same channel as the man that gave the world this "brilliant hack"! Eeeeehehe :)
Well done! I'm sure it took tons and tons of time and work. Certainly was no easy task! A man's gotta know what the hell he's doing when he gets something like this done.. as Ali G would say: "Ressspeeeeekt!"

96
Well in that case, DoubleKiller is KING :)

kimmchii told us about DupeTrasher, another tool of this kind. Check https://www.donation...index.php?topic=4122
Did you try it? Sounds interesting.. and I like the colorful interface.. though I don't know what else I could wish for with DoubleKiller. Granted, with large files, DoubleKiller takes a while, but if you're comparing MP3's or images or whatever it's blazing fast :)

Did anyone actually compare the two? I'd be interested in reading about that comparison :)

I just bought this.. and I have to say I'm very, very impressed. I've tried a bunch of free dupe finder programs over the past week or so, and some of them I liked, others not so much, but not a single one really blew me away in any way--until now. What BigBang Enterprises put together here in ONE FILE of just about 1MB in size is absolutely amazing. It's blazing fast, the features are exactly what you need and nothing that you don't, there is no installer, just that damn tiny file of some 1MB, and it's.. in a word, fantastic. This is the kind of program that really impresses once used. Unlike most software out there that you look at sort of go "ah.. ok, that'll do".. this one has you feeling proud you paid the $20 bucks to own it. The selection features for files are just awesome, as are the comparison options and the little things that let you fine-tune just exactly what kind of "duplicates" you want to find.

Seriously, if you're looking for a duplicate file finder utility... look no further. This is as good as it gets. I dare you to find a duplicate file finder tool that comes even close to DoubleKiller Pro. I'm blown away.

Nice! I think this is a very good idea. It will be interesting to see if others follow this lead and if it ultimately has any positive impact. We could certainly use more fighting on the "good side"!

Interesting indeed! Who says they'll stay on the good side? :D

This is the thread I've been waiting for for two years. THANK YOU!

I've tried about 90% of all the products you mention in your review, and while you only mentioned some and described the use of others, I must say that I could never befriend RTM as much as you. It's interface just doesn't speak to my soul. I don't like how it splits everything up into separate lists, dividing them up by tabs. I'd like to see everything on the same screen and be able to drag and drop and move stuff around, not to mention, use labels and tags the way GMail uses them. I guess you already can do the latter, but something about the tabbed interface really bothers me in RTM. I've known RTM since it's early beta stage. I was right there with it from the day it was born, so I know it well, and while I loved the design and the people behind it from the start, somehow it's magical in a special way, to me. Once I start using it, the UI drives me away, but once I'm gone from it, I keep coming back, that is, until I decide the back and forth isn't worth my time. The UI is incredibly pretty. The graphics artwork is awesome as is the implementation of AJAX on all fronts.. I suppose what doesn't really convince me is the LOGIC of the interface structuring. Guess my brain's just not wired that way.

I've been looking at and testing all sorts of PIMs for as long as I can remember, never finding the right one. And boy have I tried a lot of them.. is there any chance you saw all the hype about Active Desktop Calendar (hype = great reviews), then tried it out, and just thought to yourself.. HUH? If so, that's what happened to me.

I've never tried MLO and always meant to, but I had no idea it could be such a serious player in the life organization software market.. I thought it was just some small player in one corner of the web, something not many people know about, even less use. Guess I'm wrong! :)

I also tried WikiPad and found the concept behind it intriguing but found the interface super intrusive.. in a way that just hit me in the face like a brick when I opened it. Do you remember all the saved "notes" on the left? Wow. I opened it up and I was just like.. "Ooooook.. I gotta look at this later. This is gonna take a WHILE". Ultimately, that's where it failed for me.

I'm surprised Google hasn't given us some kind of to-do list solution.. well, they gave us Calendar, and it's great, especially because it integrates with GMail.. but you know what I mean :)

Today I'll try MLO. I'll let you know how it went. Anyway.. thanks a ton for an excellent mini-review :)
