General Software Discussion / Looking for a good Uninstaller App
« on: September 24, 2005, 12:46 PM »
Would anyone happen to be able to recommend a good uninstallation app as an alternative to Windoze's ADD/REMOVE applet? I've been using Your Uninstaller! 2004 for a while now and actually liked it quite a bit. What bugs me now is that they have not updated their product in over a year. Their website has not changed one bit in over a year. I did a search on Betanews.com and actually found that they have a beta of the 2005 version out now: http://fileforum.bet...er_2005/1031658821/1 - however, none of that is remarked or mentioned in any way on their website. It's a bit confusing..

I found this, http://fileforum.bet...staller/1090863253/1 and this: http://www.nirsoft.n.../utils/myuninst.html. Give me some opinions and shout out recommendations if you have any ;)

Thanks

For some reason, I hadn't tried it out until now. I just LOVE it. Awesome work here Mouser. This is the kind of tool that makes you go "how have I ever been without this?". It's about as ground-breaking as tabbed browsing is for web-browsing :)

Thanks a ton for a great, free app!

True. The IRC channel thing would suffice :)

Upon further thought, this is a huge waste of time. So actually, let's forget about it. It's really not a big deal at all.. Umlauts can be written as AE, UE, AEU and so on. Finding a tool like this would be hard and take time, and it really is nothing but a waste of time.

Sorry for posting this

I say advanced because this is by no means something a lot of people will use or be interested in. I'm looking for an app that can automatically detect what language I'm typing in. The reason I ask this is because I use IRC quite a bit and am always logged into both English and German speaking channels at the same time. You all know that the German language has Umlauts. It would be awesome if I could have an app running that could automatically detect whether I'm typing in German or in English, so that I could have Umlauts ready for use when I start typing in German... and yet have the basic English keyboard input ready for when I type in English

See now why I said advanced? This is pretty complicated, and in fact I doubt it exists, but that's why I'm posting this question. This requires real-time language detection and real-time keyboard layout switching, beacuse the German keyboard with Umlauts is not the same as the English keyboard.

Again, I doubt it exists, but that's why this thread is here

Thanks

One thing I'd be extremely interested in is PIMs, (Personal Information Managers). Since I refuse to use Outlook, (because I use IMAP and Outlook + IMAP = no fun), I've had a very hard time finding a good, solid PIM. I need it just to keep track of all my duties, projects, homeworks, important dates and so on.

Best outlining/note-taking tool? Just in case, my Top 5 list is as follows:

__(1) Microsoft OneNote-SP1
__(2) TexNotes Pro
__(3) Jot+ Notes
__(4) AM-Notebook Pro
__(5) NoteMap

Unlike text editors, there are many good candidates in this class of software, and even some on the OS side. The three biggest factors for me tend to be interface design, outlining flexibility and ease, and import/export abilities. Coincidently, like text editors, most outlining tools rarely see major upgrades.

Agreed. I use MS OneNote for school and it's excellent.

I went to v2 for the IMAP support. Tried it for a very short while and found it impossible to work with. Of course when you have Email Chat and skinning, who needs IMAP?

You're still talking of The Bat!, right? :) Well... IMAP > POP3 in many respects, and I have come to rely on it. I wish Google would offer IMAP access to GMail already, instead of just POP3. And I'd love The Bat! to have better IMAP support. I could do with a new Opera release with the latest IMAP backend integrated as well. They're the only company I know that is actively working on a brand-new IMAP backend for their mail-client.

I wish I could give Bat! another chance but in its current form it's just useless for me :(

General Review Discussion / Re: Next two-week review
« on: June 07, 2005, 12:24 PM »
LOL.. good point. But what's wrong with having a great program here that might just make the cut? I know it might look weird, but if you write professionally and stay objective in the whole process, and if you stay fair like you do with all the other great reviews, I see nothing wrong in giving one of DC's programs the award. That's if it truly beats the others. The advantage in having one of DC's programs in the test is that you can use it as a reference for such tools, because you understand extremely well how it works and what's important about it. Plus you would get an opportunity to try out new ones, and would see what's out there besides the DC one, which eventually might inspire you to improve upon your own program :)
Dunno.. I think it's possible, as long as we stay fair.

I meant the latter, but of course the former is just as worthy of a review. Agreed on the complexity level, let's find something simpler.
I'd be very, very interested in automation tools. Just like your Find & Run tool, (by which, btw, I was very impressed from viewing those screencasts!). ActiveWords seems to be extremely popular in this regard, and I have never before used such an app. I'd be very interested in a review of this kind of app.

Or what about Newsreaders? It's a very current thing. Newsfeeds that is :)
I'll come up with more ideas I'm sure. That's all I can think of right now. I'm frying my brain with Java right now :(

btw, i just checked and camtasia DOES have the ability to add hotspots that when clicked can trigger a url.

I guess Camtasia really is the non-plus ultra Screencasting tool then :)

It is. At least while I am not on-campus. I tried another one today and it didn't go too well. I'll have to investigate a bit further. I believe I have a third SMTP server I can use, just need to check.

See this: http://www.bu.edu/pc...e/sending/index.html

Option 1.

This is done to prevent spam relaying through a specific smtp mail server. Not all email servers require this option to be enabled, but many do these days in order to prevent abuse by spammers. That option plain does not exist in Thunderbird as far as I know, and it's a pain right now, because I'm using my university's SMTP server but I'm not connected to the internet through the university. My university therefore is not currently my ISP, and therefore I can only send mail if I check my mail immediately before sending. Now that I say this, I could of course try checking my mail manually immediately before sending. That should work. Still, it is a very basic option that most other advanced email clients have, including The Bat!

As for The Bat! not supporting the IMAP idle functionality--how could I forget about that!! That is one of the biggest drawbacks of The Bat! in combination with IMAP. It always felt really awkward using The Bat! with IMAP because it kept disconnecting me from the server, and it has all these options under preferences that ask you how you want to handle server connectivity with IMAP. For example... do you want The Bat! to connect when you change folders on the server by clicking on a different folder, or when you perform any command, or or or... it's confusing. Thunderbird simply stays connected and that's that. Doesn't get any simpler. That's why, among other reasons, The Bat! currently just sucks for IMAP. Sadly... because as we all know, it is otherwise an amazing email client.

I love Thunderbird, and I can't wait for v1.1 to officially be released. It is scheduled for release at the end of July. Still, I'd like to see Ritlabs make some drastic improvements to The Bat! in terms of IMAP functionality, so that I could consider it as an actual option. Sadly, The Bat! in its current form simply is not even an option for me.

I couldn't agree more, and this won't be the first time I'm saying it. Absolutely stunning work on mouser's part. It's hard to believe he pulled that huge review off all by himself, in what, two days!?

I call for a random round of applause for mouser! He more than deserves it :)

I tried out BB Flashback today and must say I like it a lot. I must also say that I find it a bit simplistic. Compared with the other tools in the review, even the full version of BB Flashback is still pretty simple, although it's awesome to use. It's incredibly easy to operate and once you start, you'll be creating high-quality screencasts in absolutely no time. I created one about editing Opera's Search.ini via the Opera Wiki site today and I think the result is awesome. it's less then 1MB in size too, (flash, no sound)! It was great to see such tiny file-sizes are possible. Granted, the vid wasn't very long and I recorded only part of my screen, as full-screen recordings on my laptop are overkill, (resolution: 1920x1200).

I posted in the opinions thread for this review as well, pointing out two important points about screencasting programs that were not covered in the review. That is not to say that the review is incomplete, it absolutely is. I'm just saying I found two more little things that would be worth discussing among us :)

I'm eager to try out Camtasia as well later today. Possibly not today but later this week due to classes/exams, but soon anyway.

Again, mouser, excellent work on this review. I can't repeat it enough! Keep it up ;)

What's up for next Monday? Just curious. The latest review is an excellent example of why I joined this site and donated. So thorough and well-written, I can't help but want more of it ;). Just wondering what you guys thought of in terms of ideas for the next review? Any suggestions so far? Am I even posting this in the right place? I apologize if not.

General Software Discussion / The Bat! sucks for IMAP
« on: June 07, 2005, 01:16 AM »
I don't know... I've tried The Bat! multiple times, and while I will agree that it is an excellent overall email client with by far the most impressive feature-set in the entire email-client market, I find it very frustrating to use with the IMAP email protocol. I don't know how many of you use IMAP, but you will probably be bound to agree with me if you do. I wish I could use The Bat!, really. I've always been a great fan of Thunderbird, and still use it as my only email client, but recently I've found more problems with it than ever before. I desperately need a "check mail before send" option, and Thunderbird does not support this to my knowledge. Because of this, I am now stuck with having to restart Thunderbird every time I want to send mail! Talk about pain... just because that little option is missing, I can only send mail this way. For some reason, all the "send pending" or "send unsent" mail simply does NOT work in Thunderbird. I click on the button and it's as if the button to do so points nowhere. I will see if I can find extensions that will solve these problems for me, but isn't it a pain if you have to look for extensions that will fix something so fundamental?

Having said that, I wish I could figure out how to use The Bat! effectively with IMAP, but I'm afraid the boys over at Ritlabs will have to do some work on The Bat!'s IMAP backend.

So long,

Me

Here's one thing I noticed. There are two features that I have not seen mentioned in the review that I consider rather important. BB Flashback seems to support neither of these features.

1. Anti-Aliasing for text-box fonts
This is pretty important, if you want the text you use in text-boxes in your demo-movies to look good. BB Flashback does NOT seem to support this, and because of that, many fonts will have "jagged edges". Not very pretty. I don't know about the support of this feature in any of the other products tested in this review.

2. Clickable URLs (far more important!)
One thing you really want to be able to do with screencasting software is to have the ability to create objects, (buttons, text, boxes etc.), that are CLICKABLE. It would help tremendously if it were possible to have the user viewing the demo be able to click on a link while viewing the demo. This is crucial when demonstrating a specific feature of one program that can be drastically enhanced with another tool that is available on a certain site on the web. As you demonstrate, you might want to include a reference to this second, possibly independent tool that will make the task at hand a lot easier. Again, BB Flashback does NOT seem to support this feature. Obviously, this is something that could only be done in flash-based demo-files, and which would therefore stand as a disadvantage of any of the video-based files.

That's all I have to say for now :). This review is excellent work! We should all be proud of mouser :)

Keep up the great work!

I'm sorry I couldn't be of much help. The discussion between you two was very "enlightening". I have to give Camtasia another chance. I tried it a while ago and didn't like it at all. I didn't try it thoroughly though, I must admit. For me, the two most impotant factors about a screencasting tool are crispness/sharpness of the output and the smoothness of playback. The problem is with these two factors, because the file-formats optimal for each is not the same. *.SWF is better for a crisp image, but video-encoded files are better for smoothness, I'd say. I have to find a middle-ground. I'll do some more testing as well, but my opinions probably won't make it in a timely enough fashion to be of any help. Sorry about that.

Absolutely AMAZING post, nudone! You deserve all the praise for your effort and hard work. That post must have taken quite a bit of a chunk out of your time, and I'm sure all of us here appreciate it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time as of right now to test ALL the contenders, but those that I do look at I will make sure to post about. First on the list of course is Wink. I'll give it a shot right now. I'm very curious to see what's going to come out on top here as well ;)

BTW, the spell-check feature of SMF is the best I've ever seen in a forum-script. Amazing... this is the first time I've gotten to use SMF as well. I like it a A LOT. Nice choice ;)
