General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:45 PM »
Greetings,

Dup Detector version 3.3.01 has been released. The author has (finally after 10 years!) added support for alternate file extensions.

FWIW LinkChecker is a free alternative you may want to try.

http://sourceforge.n...rojects/linkchecker/

28
Puran Defrag version 7.3 has been released. The Disk Check option is now divided into "Disk Check" and "Full Disk Check". Also, GUI problems which occurred with large DPI settings have been fixed.

29
...this installer comes with default option for both comScore RelevantKnowledge and Facemoods...

Cripes, thanks for the heads up. :o Back when I used the app (IIRC), there was none of this add-on crap in the installer.

(btw I've come across Media Cope before, but never bothered to try it.)

What a shame. :( I wish all those guys the best.

I'm having a hard time remembering a simple tool I used some time ago to cut MP3 (without re-encoding).

I'm guessing (*not at all sure*) it was the freeware MP3 Cutter Plus.

General Software Discussion / Re: Online Armor 5
« on: April 12, 2011, 02:33 PM »
Yep, Online Armor is a fine firewall which has consistently been one of the best available.

Too bad about the fallout with Matousec. OA should be included in any reputable firewall test.

33
Oh, okay--I took a shot. ;) Thought it might be some key service/certificate issue.

34
...I'd try and figure out which service from svchost.exe is trying to access the password database....

Cryptographic Services?  :-\ :tellme:

Cryptographic Services: Provides three management services: Catalog Database Service, which confirms the signatures of Windows files; Protected Root Service, which adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this computer; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificates. If this service is stopped, these management services will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

35
...my Firefox 3.6 is unable to reach the site at all. Opera had no problems opening the page...

Interesting...so does that happen a lot with Firefox 3.6? Do you also find it unstable, or at least noticeably unresponsive at times? Any problems with the Password Manager that you know of?

I'm just curious (and likely clueless) what's going on here. :-\

Ah, thanks for the info guys. So mouser's hard work is paying dividends.

It's very nice to now see relevant DC discussion threads show up in Google.

Anyone notice that Google seems to have rediscovered DonationCoder?

Many of my searches are related to software, and for the longest time Google seemed blisfully unaware of this very forum.
Just lately the DC results are there, as of course they should be. 8)

This one can also be handy for shell context menu:
http://www.nirsoft.n...shell_menu_view.html

Yep, and Nirsoft's ShellExView is another useful context tool.

Also, I have used OpenExpert on my XP machine for many years. Too bad this "Open with" replacement doesn't work on Vista/Win7. :(

40
This war seems like it's good for absolutely nothing. ;)

btw this same issue was discussed in the Outpost forum. See post #4 where it mentions svchost is blocked from reaching sqlite in the Firefox profile.

41
I hope little Samantha is not too upset ;)...because I just voted for Quinn.

42
Curt, you're welcome. I'm glad to know the .reg file worked.  :)

43
Here is another resource. Supposedly the provided .reg file works on both Windows 7 and Vista.

Nice discount. Thanks for telling.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anybody know Depeche View?
« on: April 08, 2011, 02:41 PM »
Hi,

I received a response from the developer Vincent Stahl (and he granted permission for me to post it here). He seems a nice chap receptive to feedback on his software.

(1) Regarding the six month free upgrade term of Depeche View Extended Edition--have you considered extending it?
As is, the term seems unduly restrictive for paid software.

--Not yet. I think 20 Dollars is extremely cheap, therefore paying 40 Dollars per year- if you really want the latest features - is not too much.

(2) Suppose the customer upgrades beyond the initial free upgrade term (whatever it may be), would there then be any options besides paying
full price again?

--I'm thinking of a price increment to at leat 30 Dollars for a long time now, and sooner or later I'll have to do so, as DView is not a mass product.
It targets software developers who pay at least $10 for their lunch every day. And when I implement this price increase, I may rethink the
free upgrade period, and maybe even an option for reduced upgrade costs.

If you have examples for other software, like text editors or search tools, I'm always interested in reading through their pricing and upgrade
conditions for a comparison. But as far as I see, for example, most commercial text editors are more expensive than Depeche View.

With best regards,
Vincent

So if anyone has feedback, send your thoughts to Mr. Stahl. Or post 'em right here as he is aware of this thread.

General Software Discussion / Re: Any XML gui tools out there?
« on: April 07, 2011, 06:39 PM »
I use the FREE XML Pad (http://www.wmhelp.com/xmlpad3.htm).

Hm, the site seems to have either passed away, or it's been DoCo'd (like 'slashdotted' :D)

No luck here either. I figured I would take a look because XML Marker hasn't been updated in quite a while (2004).

odd pricing for the extended edition, I think.

$20 is of course okay, but it only include updates for six months!
And they don't imply any rebate for upgrading.

Curt, I agree those terms are much too limited. I will email the developer Vincent Stahl to see if he will address these concerns.

Looks like Depeche View is now at version 1.4.6.

There's plenty about this unique app I don't know because I haven't yet read the complete help file. But even as a basic user I have found it a very useful search tool. And it remains a completely portable app provided you don't register the shell extension.

Try it, you'll like it. :drinksmiley:

These SlimWare Utilities are some nice looking apps. It will be interesting to see if they become popular.

I took a look at the freeware SlimCleaner. Currently in beta stage I don't see anything which I need (in addition to CCleaner, AutoRuns, System Explorer etc.) I mean, nothing unique really stands out.

But the GUI is attractive and the community concept is interesting. So the potential is there. Thanks for telling. :)

Hmmm...thanks for the links. Surprising lack of information on the site. Wonder what the supposed problem with 1.2.1.452 was? :tellme:

Kinda hard to hide everything, but they did a pretty good job. ;)
