Not on the recorder that I own.

I only convert for those clients of mine that cannot handle WMA files. They need MP3 files on their Macs. (And yes, I know there is an easy way to configure a Mac to be able to play WMA files, but even that's too complex for some of my clients.)

I want to thank you all for persevering so diligently.

I installed the latest two suggested programs:

Code-it Audio Solutions

and

XRecode

and neither was faster than 3 minutes

(with the fastest program -- the one with the Relevant Knowledge spyware -- took less than one minute)

I wish I could share my audio file for your testing purposes, but it is of a private session with a client, and I can't share it

Thanks again for all of the incredible responses from everyone.

These are voice recordings not music.

And Yes, I have compared the fidelity and they are so similar in quality that the differences are inaudible.

1. How do you end up with such tiny files? When I use the MediaCoder 64 bit program, like all other programs, the resulting MP3 file is larger than the original WMA file.

2. Are you using the same settings that I am: 93 MB WMA file recorded at 44199 Hz to a file @ 22,050 Hz   96 kbits per second joint stereo?

Media2.pngMediaCoder.png

In the image above, it clearly shows that it will take 8 minutes to process

Please help me to replicate your settings.

thanks

Hank

p.s. as the second image shows, it actually took over 9 minutes!

Dear Curt,

Your numbers are correct, but I'm converting files much larger than that, and Mediacoder takes 3 minutes or more for each, compared to one minute for the Free Audio Converter 7.1.5 which has the unfortunate Relevant Knowledge "spyware" included with it.

Easy CD-DA has a nice interface, but is again much slower than average.

Thank you for the recommendation.

Yes, I had tested that one too. (About 3 - 4 minutes to convert my file).

By the way, I retested the fastest program and I really can't hear any difference at all.

Just tried winLAME. about twice as slow as most programs and 6 times slower than the fastest one.

Again, thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I'm happy to try them all out.

I finally got MediaCoder to work, and it's very slow (about 3x slower than the average program or more) so I'm not sure why it's considered so fast.

Perhaps if I got the CUDA version in English...

Dear Curt,

Boy is mediacoder confusing.

I downloaded the CUDA version and the menu was in either Japanese or Chinese (I don't know which) with no way to get it in English

so I downloaded the 64 bit version and kept being sent back to their website with NoScript warnings when I tried to set up the program.

Should I just give up on mediacoder? Is it a web-based solution? What a terrible design.

Dear Curt,

You are missing the fact that software that uses more than one core at a time will be significantly faster.

I did A-B comparisons of the file as converted by slow and very fast programs and any difference was completely inaudible to me.

thank you all for you help.

Also, the Bonk aka fre:ac converter was one I tested. slow

I just tested MP3 Convert Master and it's slow, and has a really ugly as well as kludgy interface (e.g. no clear indication of processing progress or even that it's started processing)

I've had BSOD in the past with VLC so I'll give that one a pass.

Thank you for looking for me.

Dear cmpm,

thank you very much for the heads up, I missed that.

Can any of you help me find a really fast and flexible audio converter that doesn't have this catch?

thanks

I regularly convert WMA audio files to MP3 files, and have tested many free programs including:

the Koyote Soft Free MP3 WMA converter

the open source Freac

NCH Swift Sound converter

Pazera Free Audio extractor

the BeeThink Music Handle

and a few others, and they all took over 3 minutes to convert a 93 MB WMA file recorded at 44199 Hz to a file @ 22,050 Hz   96 kbits per second joint stereo

and then I tested the Free Audio Converter 7.1.5 that I downloaded from http://www.free-audi...audio_converter.html

and it took only one minute! (over three times faster than the best of the other freeware programs!)

It can convert between MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA files with excellent control over all settings.

I wanted all of you to know of this great program.

Thanks

Perry,

With the Kinesis Freestyle keyboard, how do you handle not having a number pad? Or do you have an add-on number pad? If you do have an add-on, which on works well with the Freestyle?  (Damn - now I'm actually looking, pricing, checking my savings, etc....)

Thank you.

Jim

Jim, I have the Kinesis Freestyle and the numeric keypad accessory, and they work perfectly together. One does have to press the Num Lock key on at the beginning of a session on the keypad, but otherwise, it's great.

In regard to the general discussion, the Logitech Marble Mouse has been my favorite for decades. I don't care about the lack of a scrolling function because the ergonomics are just great.

92
And the winners are:

CodeLobster and Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express both are free and have vertical splitting with sync.

93
Thanks from Hank, too

94
dear steeladept,

what I meant by automatically insert HTML codes is that I'm used to an HTML editor (the old Windows version of Arachnophilia, which is truly superb) where you can customize the right-click menu such that you can, for example:

highlight text and change its size, color, make it a link, etc.

or click on a blank area and insert text or links or graphics, etc.

very easily

95
Please excuse my ignorance on RSS feeds, but can you provide me with a link for having RSS feeds for newly added items to the:

Found Deals and Discounts

section of the website?

thank you very much

96
I did manage to install the Microsoft Visual Web Developer after a bit of effort (you have to download the Microsoft Web Platform Installer first, then go to the Microsoft Visual Web Developer page http://www.microsoft.com/express/web/ and click on the Install button and enter the path to the Microsoft Web Platform Installer on your PC to install it. And installation is quite sloooooow.

The Express version (supposed to be free) is clearly labeled "For Evaluation Purposes only" -- not my favorite ambiguity...

and then after loading an HTML file, I get the message: some bytes have been replaced with the Unicode substitution character while loading filename with US-ASCII encoding. Saving the file will not preserve the original file contents.

Not sure if this will mess up my HTML files or not.

on the positive side, it has dual panes, code and preview, with auto-updating and a vertical split option with the code on the left, which I prefer

but on the negative side, it doesn't have any way to automatically insert HTML codes, e.g. I cannot select a few words and change their color, size, etc.

so it's ok but certainly not great.

by the way, CodeLobster PHP Edition has all of the above except that the preview is on the left, but again has no support for inserting HTML tags easily.

97
dear nepaltom,

if you read my response, I did indicate the weaknesses and strengths of Amaya, specifically the "fatal" lack of wordwrap

98
My quest continues.

I tested bluefish and Blaze (nope to both)

Selida, which is free and would be fine if the sync was at least possible (the preview jumps to the top the minute I enter any code)

And I'm having a similar issue with Codelobster.

99
Dear HA14,

Amaya has a vertical split, synching, etc. and would be great BUT it has no wordwrap so long lines drift way offscreen.

Apparently, wordwrap has been asked for for years, but not added.

 :(

It's funny how the lack of one little feature can diminish the value of a great program greatly

100
Dear Lanux128,

I've actually been quite successful so far in my search.

The following programs show split screens with previews:

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer (FREE) -- Horizontal display AND both sync

CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor -- Horizontal display (no sync)

HTML Pad (about $35) --Horizontal OR Vertical display (no sync)

Trellian WebPage (FREE) -- Horizontal (no sync)

EvrSoft First Page 2006 (FREE or Pay?) -- Horizontal with sync (but questions about support, registering, stability)

So the best ones, with sync that is, are:

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer (FREE)

and

EvrSoft First Page 2006 (FREE or Pay?)

and the only one with my preferred Vertical split (but no sync so far)   :(

is:

HTML Pad (about $35)

How about all that?
