Living Room / Re: I am so very very sick of copyright issues.
« on: July 03, 2010, 01:51 AM »
It goes wider than copyright as well, have you seen how FIFA attack anyone who isn't an official sponsor?  i.e. those Dutch supporters arrested during the game were facing criminal prosecution and jail (I am still not sure exactly what they did). I also heard that a company had to pull an tv ad after FIFA went after them it said something like "the unofficial airline for the 'you know what' tournament"

Living Room / Re: The internet: Everything you ever need to know
« on: July 03, 2010, 01:42 AM »
It seems to me that the best generalisation that you can say about the internet is that it massively speeds up the breaking down of barriers.... in every sense.

Whether it is the spreading of previously unobtainable information, the huge jumps in communication, the potential to educate or the pushing of social boundaries and taboos.

I am sure someone has written a white paper about it somewhere (although they are probably in jail on anti-terror charges if they did) but isn't the Internet by it's very nature impossible to shutdown?

I am sure that there are many important hubs etc but wouldn't they just be replaced/mirrored pretty quickly & in the meantime everything would just be slower?

Who would need to make phone calls on a phone anyway  :)

& what is it with this face to face calling that the media is going mad over like it's a revolution. I had that option on my first 3g phone years ago. Never used it, never wanted to.

hehe, very cute cat. Life as a cat seems pretty easy.

One very cool film no sci-fi buff should miss is this relatively low-budget picture:

Avalon-  released in 2001 and directed by Mamoru Oshii, who also was responsible for the great animae classic Ghost in the Shell.

Sounds great 40hz. I love Asian films, especially the Japanese. If you want originality then look East rather than to Hollywood.

Having said that, anyone remember Critters and The Last Starfighter from the 80's?

Living Room / Re: Has SEO ruined the web?
« on: June 10, 2010, 07:41 AM »
Hehe, this is a can of worms.

Personally I don't know what I would do without search engines, it wasn't that long ago that if you wanted to do any kind of research then you had to make a trip to a library & hope they had the relevant books and then hope that had a decent index (or read the whole book) to find what you wanted.

Now we have the luxury of just going to google and doing some searches & in an instant finding what we want. I would say that it is extremely rare that I can't find exactly what I want when doing research (this of course depends on knowing exactly what you want).

If you are not getting the results you want in google then use the advanced search options & be very specific. Google is constantly changing it's algorithms and recently completed a major update called caffeine that it says updates much quicker and is more relevant than the old version. Who knows if that is true but you certainly have more options.

I would also like to make the point that wikipedia is one of the most seo'd sites out there. If you want to know how to setup your website to be loved by the search engines then just take a look at how they do it.

Also, a forum like this is, by its very nature, is heavily seo'd. Google loves large sites with every changing, always updated content i.e. a forum & the software this forum uses will have an seo setup to it.

Seo'ing is just like advertising in the offline world, if you don't advertise then no-one will know your product exists. That is not to say that the world is better or worse for it, it is just business. The difference is that you don't need to have a large amount of money and David can take on Goliath. It has levelled the playing field to a large extent.

I think that at the end of the day, the best sites will always come out on top, think facebook, wikipedia, newspaper sites etc I would also state that running these kinds of heavy content sites takes a huge amount of time, effort and staff i.e. they need to making money in some way. If the content is free then that way is usually via advertising. You tube lost something like 400 million last year, this year I suspect it will make 400 million. The difference is they have implemented advertising, one is sustainable, one is not.

looks like a interesting idea.

A similar thing has been going on with the music industry for a while of course, there was the whole napster thing etc  The traditional music companies that are doing well are the ones that have shifted their model & embraced the internet (e.g. if it wasn't for youtube, susan boyle would have been a minor celeb in the UK). The ones that are suffering are the monoliths that won't/can't change their business quick enough.

On a personal note, I have to question whether newspapers et al even serve us anymore, they give such a huge distorted image of the world are they doing more harm than good?

Interesting topic  :)  I have to say though Deathswitch sounds very dangerous!

even Prostitutes had to advertise!

Maybe their advertising was 'built in' i.e. how they looked. A bit like having 'get a free hotmail account' at the bottom of every hotmail email that was sent.

Predictably, his argument for freedom is a list of "freedom from...."

V. good point

I think that you can become "successful" by cheating, but eventually it will backfire. I guess you could call it Karma.

But I also believe that the truly successful people/businesses are honest.

You're very young, aren't you?  ;)

I choose to agree with Deozaan.

I like to try and focus on life's silver lining because I like to feel good rather than bad. I think you see in life what you want to see so you might as well focus on the good side.

Not easy todo when you are old and bitter like me  ;)

What do people in the UK think of the new digital bill that is being passed?

I haven't looked at the detail yet but it seems to cover copyright & such like.

A a brief viewing it sounds like it is not quite as draconian as the gov't wanted... but still it has things such as a clause that allows the blocking of "a location on the internet which the court is satisfied has been, is being or is likely to be used for or in connection with an activity that infringes copyright".

Living Room / Re: Yea, I won't be getting an iPad anytime soon
« on: April 15, 2010, 12:24 PM »
I spoke to someone who had an ipad & he said  "It's not what it does but how it does it." which I think sums up the usp of most of apples products.

I think it will fly off the shelves & once apps start appearing it will have a life of it's own as far as sales go.

If I had the money I would buy one for my mum, she hates computers & I think it would be perfect for her.

If it did multi tasking I might get one for myself, or maybe wait for the new iPhone?!

Yes, I am not sure how much of a pull the brand name is anymore, it's hayday was what, 10-15 yrs ago? Could be worth a bit of PR but isn't it better to spend all that money on R & D to come up with something brave & new.

How about an augmented reality based computer system. Stick a projector in there or some glasses with screens, a glove or something for input, put it all in a backpack & make it interact with physical objects..

Hey Mouser, 23000 posts, wow  8)

I think that it is true in most sphere's of life that successful people don't play by the rules. The rules were invented to keep the little people where they are and the successful people where they are.

A good example is the tax system. In the UK if you are wealthy you pay very little, if any tax (expensive accountants/lawyers + very accommodating government) but anyone on middle income playing by the rules pays heavily (up to 50%). I am sure most other countries are similar.

However, I am not saying this is good or bad, just making the point.

I have always loved this tune from Daft Punk circa 2001. It was sampled by Kanye West many years later, 80's cartoon type video as well (anyone remember G-Force?)

Sounds like a great book.

As an aside there are many people who believe that these super smart kids are actually being born today in the real world, I think they call them magenta children or something..... let me see if I can find one I saw on TV....

hehe, it was Indigo children not magenta children  ;D

Check out this short clip of one of these so called Indigo children, whatever your views the talent is undeniable.

yeah, I love the quote "you don't have to be perfect you just have to get going". More often than not perfectionism is a vice rather than a asset.

Having said that you can draw parallels with the movie industry, James Cameron is a perfectionist, blowing the Titanic budget literally out of the water (i believe he had to put his own money in to finish the project)....but somehow, always coming up with the financial goods in the end.

hehe yeah, I used to work in IT support & had todo this more than a few times over the years. Mindyou, keyboards ended up being so cheap & seemed to come out of every corner it really became a non-issue.

I think you can ignore the commercialism if you want to, you don't have to go buy expensive gifts, it should be about the sentiment..... Having said that, this year I am part of the single and (not so) depressed group  ;)

Do you remember it was not so long ago that microsoft were the one's buying up every idea/company in sight...how things have changed in the last few years.

Are google the new microsoft?

btw.. if anyone has read things like 'the secret' or 'think and grow rich' you will notice that google's tag line does the opposite of what is intended.

When looking at a sentence like 'do no evil' the brain doesn't pay attention to the 'no'. Never use negatives in your goal setting.
