Your number CANNOT exist with two carriers at the same time.
Exactly how the transition takes place is really up to the new carrier (what their procedure is). I would suspect (I would like to hope) they provide you the new phone and then give you an option to determine/control when you have the number ported. The actual process of porting the number takes only a few minutes.

I love the idea and am anxious to try this (sorry I missed your original post; it appears you have gotten a lot of good feedback). I will consider myself part of the "second generation" of testers! At first look it appears to be something that just might give me an excuse to use Twitter more than once a month. LOL
I have a bit.ly account. Can I configure this client to use MY account when converting URLs?

I have been using WAVE for quite a while now for: Collaboration Brainstorming Archive of images/ideas Maintaining personal notes and TODO lists
Now, I admit it is NOT the perfect tool for every job. I use Tungle.me to schedule meetings and RememberTheMilk.com for TODO lists with deadlines/notification and git for archive/retrieval. But I do find more of my data stored "in the cloud". Google Docs provides an outstanding alternative to [overpriced and overrated] MSOffice. I have even drifted away from OpenOffice in favor of GoogleDocs. Picasa provides a great alternative to Photoshop; with online storage built-in
One day I will wonder how I can survive without an Internet connection (and Google).

My hosting account with Dreamhost includes the capability to backup ANYTHING I want and access it with FTP or SCP. Here is their description of the service they offer:
You do, however, get one user per account where anything legal may be stored; your Backups User.
This user cannot have any websites pointed to it, nor may you share files via it... it is only to be used as an off-site backup for your personal files. As such, we keep no backups of files on this account. These are already supposed to be your backups... not your only copy! (Of course, you should always keep your own copies of all data stored with us.. we make no guarantees!)
Every full DreamHost Hosting plan includes 50GB of backups space! (Additional usage will be charged at the rate of 10 cents / GB a month: the best backup deal on the net!)
You may access your backup user via ftp, sftp, scp, and rsync!

I would offer a word of warning: be sure to keep some sort of backup copy of EVERYTHING. Especially with MSWord, there will be a time* when a user makes changes to a document and it becomes unreadable. I am a big fan of git for version control & backup. I acknowledge that 'average users' are not able to understand the concepts of version control. But, one of the great attributes of git is that all the revision information can be 'transported' easily (it is maintained in a single folder). I have done precisely this, in this way: - I have a 'controlled' copy of everything on a server (in a share only I have permission to)
- Using git I can capture changes - as the 'updates' are passed to me by other users (in my case it is only ONE other person)
- That server-backed copy of my files becomes the MASTER.
Good luck. Your task is complicated by the fact that, besides managing information (and the technical logistics) you must manage people and "The Idiot Principle" [a kin to The Peter Principle]. *When that occurs and you think back to this post, you can call me "Jeanne Dixon". LOL

Sorry! I had thought the Coding Snacks section was only for things requested by others. Guess I shoulda asked before posting... For future reference, what's the difference between posting in Coding Snacks or the "Other programs" section? That's a great question I would [also] like to know the answer for. Thanks for this really cool utility! It will make my life easier. "If necessity is the Mother of Invention, then laziness must be the Father"
