Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Why I have a problem with Facebook?

I agree that many people misuse/abuse Facebook as a way to publicly display their exploits. A textbook example is in the current trial here in Florida with Casey Anthony. Photos of this "distraught mother" partying and drinking appeared on Facebook and have become the most damning evidence. Some do take pride in displaying their "drunk and disorderly" behavior. But I think that is the exception. Although I shy away from these sites, I use Facebook to maintain contact with my adult children and about 4 closest friends. It is limited and restricted to only this small circle. Also, I post only things I would feel comfortable my MOTHER seeing; a good rule of thumb with respect to the Internet in general.
As Renegade stated, your characterization is very bleak and should not be focused only on one service. There are many, many, many similar examples of "faux amis" relationships on the Internet and off.

Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Micro Reviews of Board Games From a Non-Competetive Perspective

I agree with your tastes, Mouser. Following the format you used, here is a micro-review of one of my favorites: Alhambra - Compete to construct the most impressive Palace Key features:The concept is easy to grasp Heavily 'themed' Simple setup Essentially a 'real estate' game but unlike the typical "Monopoly" style. Unique in that there are four different currencies that must be used. Minimal options on a player's turn so no one is bored waiting for the next round. Enough scoring options so as to minimize failure (and discouragement) due to 'bad luck'. Multitude of 'expansion' options that can be used as mix-and-match easily (yet this game does not suffer from expansion overkill like Carcassonne) Weaknesses:In some respects, you are working on your own. Some might cite 'lack of player interaction'. We found the 2-player version needed additional modification beyond what the designer providing in order to maintain a better balance. Game Design Interests:As stated, this game adheres well to the theme. All the parts and pieces are richly designed to evoke the proper mood. The very interesting aspect of the game is that scoring (which occurs three times in a game) is based solely on your ability to construct MORE of a particular room than your opponents. This permits a variety of play in each game and enables you to explore multiple strategie options. Final Rating: Rating: 10 out of 10 -- This is on our short list of favorites (among the 60+ games we own). We play it no less than 5 times a week - with 2 players and with 4 players. The ability to add in expansion options guarantees the game will never become old and uninteresting to play.

Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Dropbox and Evernote problem

Let me recommend this basic troubleshooting step: Uninstall (temporarily) Dropbox and try to use 'standby'. Then uninstall (or perhaps you can disable) Evernote and try to use 'standby' It would be helpful to verify, without a doubt, that one of these is the cause of your problem - and to know which one.
I know Dropbox can be easily reinstalled with no effect on your data. I am unfamiliar with Evernote and you may need to backup the data that application has created in order to restore it when you reinstall.

I bought a MacBook Pro. It just arrived today. And I must say the entire 'presentation' (the way it is packaged and presented when you unpack it) has impressed me. There is also a lot of evidence of attention-to-detail. As a first-time Mac owner, I am impressed. Since I was using a laptop as my primary machine (with a docking station) and had it dual boot with Ubuntu I thought, "With a MacBook I get the best of both. It is native Linux and a kick-ass Intel processor". So my next PC is this MacBook. I am in a bit of a 'learning curve' with the UI. But I think I am going to like it. My major objection (inability to run a few 'essential' apps that are available only for Windows) has been overcome with VMWare Fusion!

There are many things about git that I am still learning (disclaimer: I am NOT an expert). I believe the solution to your problem would be to set up a branch that is 'private'; only available to you.
Hopefully, someone with more experience will chime in here (and provide an example).

DonationCoder.com Software / Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Time Of Day Synchronized Slide Show Screen Saver
|
on: July 15, 2010, 07:00:15 AM
|
|
Time of Day Synchronized Slide Show This is a quirky concept but, as I have always believed, if I have a need for something there must be at least one other person in the world who would also find it useful.
The idea is to develop a Screen Saver that rotates through photographs on the user's computer. Nothing new there. But each photo will be displayed based on the Time of Day it was taken. Thus, at any minute of the day I will be able to see photos I took at the same time of day on some other date.
Here are the 'business rules' for the application: o A typical Slide-Show Screen Saver with all capabilities that are assumed in such o All photos to be displayed are defined by the user in the configuration - from a set of folders o The user can configure a 'minimum display time' for photos. Every photo will display on the screen for at least this minimum time. This prevents the FLIPPING of multiple photos in succession that match the timestamp AND prevents the change to a 'next' photo prematurely. In other words, if the 'minimum time' is 2 minutes yet there is a photo that matches the next minute it will be skipped o The photos will be displayed based on the current time and the time/date information of the photo (I believe this can be found in the EXIF; if it exists.) o For photos that do not contain EXIF data, the date will be used - these form a 'pool' of photos for "random" choice (below) o When faced with multiple photos meeting the selection criteria any one will be chosen at random from those that do match o When there is no photo in the collection that meets the criteria the Month-and-Day will be used o When there is no photo in the collection matching simply Month-and-Day, the current Month will be used o If no photo matches the selection criteria - based on date/time taken, the file datestamp will be used Additional feature/ideas (maybe future): o Since we will be reading the EXIF data, the option (configurable by the user) to display the GeoTag data over the image - as a tag at the lower corner in Lat/Lon format. o A 'magic' key that will identify the currently displayed photo - perhaps placing its location on the Windows clipboard. {I find myself, many times, see an image in my screensaver and wonder "Where is that?" or "I want to print/copy/review that one" o The ability to include the path to photo-sharing sites (Picassa does this and I love it) o Added logic to 'remember' which photos were chosen at random so there is less chance of repeat.
I would like to do this myself, maybe even as a commercial venture, but I simply do not have the time. I was hoping someone in the DC community has the time and desire to make this idea a reality. This is an application I would find very useful (and will gladly share some Donation Credits)
