Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini Review - DeVeDe
« on: July 23, 2008, 10:23 PM »
I kind of thought it might be the original files (they are MKV files, the video stream codec is AVC) although they play perfectly fine in Windows Media Player.  So, I grabbed an AVI file and used it and that worked fine.  I guess I need to find something to convert the other files to another format.

Nice program, but I am having a bit of a problem.  It is truncating all the videos I add to like 9 mins.  The resultant DVD ISO is 500mb, and it is supposed to have four 24 minute episodes on it.  I made sure to select the media size of 4.7gb DVD too.  Have you watched the DVD you made with it?  Is it the proper length?

Yeah, I know I know, everybody wants graphics today :(

Not me! I'm an old time MUDder and closet Zork fan. Think GUE not GUI!  8)

I was going to correct your GUE until I thought maybe you did it on purpose.  :/

My view is, you are talking about a thing that happened a couple of years ago (WB 5 has been out quite a long time now) vs an attitude they have now.  You can't hold ancient history against them.  They experimented with something, it didn't work out and it seems they moved on toward a more reasonable viewpoint.  Stardock today seems to deserve the praise people have been heaping upon them.  I am an Open Desktop Premium subscriber and think its great.

Living Room / Re: which hierarchical note program?
« on: June 27, 2008, 03:33 PM »
I just checked out Maple (I noticed it was mentioned), and it is FANTASTIC.

I had a quick look at the website and couldn't see what would make it better than TreeDBNotes. And the features mentioned are in the free version of TreeDBNotes.

I know this is an older post, but I have been trying to find the perfect note taking app to replace Keynote for a long time and have tried many, many of them.  NeoMem was cool, but its basically a dead project.  Couldn't get with SQLNotes or EverNote.  I recently found TreeDBNotes and I do believe I am in love.  So far, it does everything I want.  First thing on my list is be a tree based note taker. :)   That is the thing I disliked the most about Evernote, the tape thing just never worked for me.

Find And Run Robot / Re: LifeHacker vote, stage 2, final voting

Personally, I think the name is a bit off-putting for some people.  It sounds too geeky for the average user.

My view though, is the only reason FARR isn't annihilating the rest of them in that poll is most of those people have never even tried it.  Those other launchers are barely a pimple of FARR's butt.  Well, if FARR had a butt.  Its 10x the launcher the best of them are.  And, I posted as much in response.  Well, after voting that is. haha.

Living Room / Re: The last time your AntiVirus saved you!
« on: May 23, 2008, 08:09 AM »
Its hard to remember the last time I had an anti-virus program installed on my PC.  Sometime in the mid to late 90s I would guess.  Back then it wasn't as big a problem and these days I know how to not get infected.  I don't suggest people roll the way I do though.

Stop teasing us and make this available already! :)

I maintain that the Office 2007 interface is a travesty and those involved in its creation should be publicly flogged for it.  This addin, in my opinion, is Microsoft admitting they created a piece of trash and too many people can't find the crap they could find easily in 2003.  So this is their bandaid.  I will stick with OpenOffice or MS Office 2003.

Hi Alex, great program you have here!

A suggestion that came to my mind immediately would be a plugin system.  This would allow your program to leverage all the other programmers on this site that can create great little modular functions, for viewing different file types from the context menu and other things.

Living Room / Re: Knock, Knock, It's the FBI

One name illustrates this fear: Pete Townshend.

There's a guy who spent his life with children's charities, researched one book about the subject, and among a lifetime of public service around the globe, he still got clobbered. The press never prints those retractions and follow-up stories in the same above-the-fold screaming headlines as the first go-round.

That kind of overreaction happens all the time, and most people seem perfectly ok with some innocent people's lives being utterly ruined by false accusations and such.  Well, until it is THEY that are the victim.  My point is, there are a few areas in the law where we totally throw out the system.  You ARE guilty even if proven innocent.  This is very, very dangerous.

Tekzel, no politics here, it will open up a big can of worms if everyone starts talking about who they are voting for and why, etc.  it's one of the few subjects we've collectively agreed is better handled someplace other than this forum.

Sorry Mouser, I didn't realize people couldn't be adults about the subject here.  I will remember that next time the urge strikes me to respond to such a post.

Edit: Adding my response to Renegades last here to avoid multiple posts.

Kiddie porn is a seriously sick issue, and the cops are over-burdened. It's a sad state of affairs. I can understand where the legislation comes from, but it's still misguided.

It's a very sad issue. :(

Its called throwing the baby out with the bath water, basically.  Child porn is bad.  Purveyors of such are sick and should be helped if possible.  PROVIDERS of it are criminals deserving of long loving jail sentences with a big bald guy named Bubba as a cell mate.  I understand the concept of remove the demand and choke off the supply, the only problem is it does NOT work.  Look at all the folks in jail for possession, has that stemmed the demand for drugs?  Not even a little.  The same is applicable here, the people in charge are all either incompetent or just plain stupid.  Maybe a little of both.  But what can be done?  Certainly not work within the <insert banned discussion topic here> system.  It is as corrupt as it appears.

Terrifying story - I don't know why anyone wants to live in the 'land of the free' any more.

Am I imagining it or does the US have laws on entrapment ? Surely the FBI should be in the next cell ?
-Carol Haynes (April 28, 2008, 06:14 AM)

We are definitely on a downward spiral, but I am hoping that will change with the next election.  I think I am going to commit a personal sin and vote Democrat if Obama is the nominee.  There is NO way I could bring myself to vote for Hillary, unless I was planning to kill myself afterward.  As distasteful as it is for me to vote Democrat, the Republicans need to be sent a message.  The folks responsible for the vile "patriot act", an un-American piece trash if ever there was one, need to be punished.  Of all the mistakes Bush has made, the crimes he has commited against the American public are the unforgivable ones.

On the laws thing, the only people subject to laws are the population.  He or she who makes the rules, are not.  The government can do anything it wishes.  The days when our opinion matters is just about, if not already, over.  People can fool themselves if they like.  The bit above about me voting Democrat is just me satisfying myself, I am under no illusion that it will actual mean a damn thing.

Still receiving messages from them. [sigh]

Allen, no sense in getting worked up about it man, just set up a server side delete filter in whatever your email client is and be done.  I understand it is a principal of the thing, thing... but it isn't worth your frustration.  Or maybe it is for you, certainly wouldn't be fore me.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: QuickNote Add???
« on: April 24, 2008, 11:26 AM »
Isn't that most good note taking do anyways ? EverNote, SQLNotes, etc. : press a key, jot your note, and that's... it. And with these other notetaking programs, there are some auto filtering capabilities that could put your note in the right place  as soon as you press enter.

IMHO, I'm not sure energy should be put in such a feature.

Evernote: No, I don't want the entire interface coming up.  I just want a simple little box where I can type in my note.  Like the QuickNote feature in CHS.

SQLNotes: No idea, can't stand the program.  Couldn't get past the first 30 seconds with it.

Haven't found any other program that does what QuickNote does.  As for spending the energy, from what I see it is mostly spent, just needs a little more to make it save the note.  Why not go ahead and finish it for those of us that would use it?  To be honest, regarding the auto filtering thing, I don't want the program deciding for me.  I will put it where I want it, thanks.

Edit: Oh yea, back to EverNote.  I tried to like it, really I did.  I even used it for a while.  I just hate the tape thing, I prefer the old tree view type note program style.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Opening CH+S From Systray? Hotkeys?
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:53 PM »
It is a reasonable possibility, I am thinking about it.

Ideally, you could press enter on the FARR result and paste it as normal, or right click it in FARR, choose edit, and that would open up CHS with the selected entry active and the cursor in the body.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Hotkeys/keyboard macros??
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:51 PM »
I think i understand what you are asking..
Do you mean you have some clips with some of your own boilerplate extra text, and some embedded date info, and you want to be able to easily paste those?  Ok let me think about that.  It's definitely in the realm of what the traditional text-expander programs do, so we are starting to blur the lines here between a clipboard helper tool and a text expander, that's the only issue to be concerned with.

That is exactly what I want.  Theres nothing wrong, in my opinion, with a few blurry lines. :)  CHS already has the capability of using the date/time formatting codes, this is just a matter of letting it do it in a clip.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: QuickNote Add???
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:48 PM »
The reason i never really got around to adding it is because it became clear to me that CHS should not try to compete with the hierarchical notetaking applications.  I originally thought i might make it a combo cliptool and notetaking app.

However, thinking about the issue a little more here is what i was thinking:
What if i added a kind of reduced functionality quick-add clip feature.  When triggered it just lets you paste in some text, and it copies this text to the clipboard and adds it to the recent clips group.  So basically it's just a really quick and dirty way to add a clip to the list.  Maybe with checkbox to flag it as a favorite.

Thoughts?

While I can understand you don't want to get into trying to make CHS compete with a dedicated app, Im not sure it needs to.  For instance, that QuickNote Add feature is the single feature I have been trying to find a simple notetaking app that had, and none that I have seen ever had it.  It is just about perfectly what I have been wanting.  An example, I am on the phone and want to jot down a note and save it.  With that I can just press my hotkey and take it, then later I can go back and put it where I want it.  Ideally, you would be able to select a default location to store QuickNotes.  I added a new top level folder called "Notes", I would love to be able to select that as the home for QuickNotes, then when I add one it goes in there by default.  From there, I can do what I want, including pasting them into my "real note taking program".

« on: April 23, 2008, 03:41 PM »
Does that solve your data/time request?

Only if the hotkeys for clips feature is never added.  To me, the perfect situation would be where I can press a single hotkey and paste my favorite date/time formatted clip at the cursor location in any document.  This would, of course, require date/time formatting code expansion in favorite clips.  For giggles, I tried and and found it just pastes the codes verbatim, but I had to try it! :)

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Opening CH+S From Systray? Hotkeys?
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:37 PM »
Well i think it would actually improve things if there was a hotkey that:
1) brought up the main window
2) focused cursor in the search window
3) cleared any existing search text.
4) closed when you double click a clip item to paste into your last application.

The idea being that this hotkey would be used to facilitate quick search+paste.

That does sound nice.  I saw a suggestion a few minutes ago on another thread from a while back about some sort of cooperation between CHS and FARR, that would be awesome!  A CHS plugin for Farr, allowing you to use the Farr search mechanism on CHS clips.  Is this even a reasonable possibility?

You could always keep the name and change it too.

How about CHASTE?

Clipboard Help And Spell (Text, Everything).   :)

I am pretty sure you are flogging a dead horse at this point.  Doubt Mouser will be changing the name of this program now (though I say its never too late, I think it should be changed asap!).

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Opening CH+S From Systray? Hotkeys?

kind of embarassing that there isn't a hotkey in chs to just show main form isnt it.. :(
ok i'll add.

I dunno, to me its nice to have it as an option, but for me it would just be a wasted hotkey.  I changed my quickpaste hotkey to CONT+Q and just press that then W to bring up the main window, since its right next to the Q its a split second operation.

(I know this is an old thread, but what the heck! haha)

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Hotkeys/keyboard macros??
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:10 PM »
I think a dedicated program for that might be better...

Disagreed! :)

I actually was coming here to add a feature request, one that is kind of similar to this one.  Mouser, is there a possibility of assigning hotkeys to certain favorites in CHS?  There are a couple of items I am ALWAYS pasting in and while hitting Cont+Shift+Q, going to favorite clips, and selecting it is ok, it would REALLY be nice to be able to assign dedicated hotkeys to a CLIP, that way I can just press the hotkey and paste it in with no interface at all.

Edit: Doh, forgot something! Could it be possible to be able to expand date formatting codes in a clip along with this?  That way I could use say, ALT+D and paste the date, formatted the way I want, into any document, etc.
