Living Room / Alt codes for Maths Symbols
« on: September 29, 2017, 05:04 AM »
I found a helpful page showing Alt codes for Mathematical symbols
http://usefulshortcu.../maths-alt-codes.php
(I've confirmed the numbers given correct at other sites)

Some of them work for me, but some dont e.g. I get the wrong symbol with Alt247.
I get a ¸
I'm wondering is this to do with the font -- would I need a special font for some symbols?
Or could it be to do with using a qwertz (German) keyboard?

I'm specifically looking for the 'equivalent' symbols:

Screenshot - 2017-09-29 , 11_48_35.png [Alt 247]

Screenshot - 2017-09-29 , 11_48_46.png (Couldnt find an Alt code for this one! It seems to be not that common, or not commonly used for maths)

Copying and pasting of symbols (from wikipedia) does not work either e.g. with first example I get a ~

Anyone got any ideas here?

Living Room / Chess?
« on: September 27, 2017, 02:06 PM »
Any Chess lovers here?
I just know the *very* basics of chess, but have started watching and really enjoying a YT chess channel:
ChessNetwork -- I particularly enjoy his analysis of famous chess games.

Also discovered a great site (www.chessgames.com) where you can 'replay' a game e.g.

I'm looking for a site, or software, that will quickly show time (current or given) in all timezones, or in timezones of choice.

1) Maybe like the map below - but instead of +1, +2, etc, it would simply show either (a) the current time in each time zone, or (b) show a given time (i.e. one I add). Ideally I would be able to add the 'given' time in a timezone of my choice.

Screenshot - 2017-06-07 , 11_53_04.png
[http://staging.timeanddate.com/time/map/]

Most sites I found so far request a location -- I simply want to know a timezone e.g.
  • what time is it now in Pacific Time, or
  • what time would it be here, when it is 9pm pacific time

2) Or something like this below would be good, if I could custom add timezones, instead of cities

Screenshot Captor / AltTab away from SC is dysfunctional
« on: May 17, 2017, 03:55 AM »
I think this recent, and appears to only happen with SC:

using AltTab to move to the next window no longer works as it should:
I have to press the Tab key twice to get to the next window.

EDIT//
this fixed after SC restart -- I will report back if it happens again. [Updated windows yesterday, maybe that had some weird influence :-/ ]
//EDIT

Wondering does SC for some reason 'swallow' the first Tab press?

This with SC installed
Version v4.21.1
Windows 7 x64

Can anyone else confirm this?
(Can check myself again on another Win.7 machine tomorrow)

Living Room / Culture is the Behavior You Reward and Punish
« on: March 07, 2017, 11:17 AM »
The word culture, rarely defined when used, has many meanings.

Culture is the Behavior You Reward and Punish talks about the values of a work environment. So you may have grand values, or a wonderful image of your work culture, but it boils down to what is rewarded, and punished. The idea isn't taken beyond the work place, but the way I see it, the article applies to society, the family, the individual even.

It's a simple straight-forward idea, but I guess it's easy enough, at any level, to think things are different from the reality.

Also some interesting thought there about how you can have an influence.

Clipboard Help+Spell / CHS not copying text from column of cells
« on: February 22, 2017, 07:24 AM »
Scenario:
  • select a column in a spreadsheet file by clicking on the header
  • Copy
  • The text *is* being copied to the clipboard, but it does not show anywhere in CHS

I thought this may be to do with volume of text I was copying (thousands of entries) in the spreadsheet,
but see I have the same problem copying a few entries (~20) from my IM (InfoQube)

I cant image it might be the case, but is there a setting somehow related to this?
Or is it a bug?

CHS version 2.3.9, installed version
Windows 7 x64

General Software Discussion / Editor with Synchronized Comments Page?
« on: February 14, 2017, 07:40 AM »
Was titled: "Editor w. Facing Pages: Text Left, Commentray Right (?)"

I'm sure this must exist, but my search fu didnt find it:

Looking for an editor where I can view two facing pages, just as if I were reading a book.
If I write, or paste, a longer text in, I want it to show only on one side (ideally I could choose which side). I then want to be able to comment/annotate on the other side, i.e. the facing page.

  • Would need to be able to export, or save to a file format that can be read elsewhere
  • Ideally unicode
  • Just text would be okay, but formatting would be nice

'Supermoon' tomorrow (2016-11-14)
It's nearer the earth than it has been in over 50 years.

How visible this size difference will be, I dont know. Most at moonset tomorrow morning I think, but probably also at moonrise later in the day.
So, when's that?

In the last few months, I've had problems with svchost /k netsvcs hogging CPU & ram (plus lots of page file activity) on three Windows 7 (x64) machines - two mine, the third a friends that I sort-of look after. Problem lasted over a month, but my two were eventually sorted out via windows updates (I dont know which update fixed them -- I only install 'security' updates since this problem, so it was one of them).

EDIT//
To summarise current status of problem:
1) Machine #1 (friend's) has major problem with svchost constantly hogging one full core (dual-core CPU) and windows update not working
2) Machine #2 (mine) has occasional problem with svchost hogging one full core -- temporarily solved by rebooting, [may yet be solved by windows update, will have to give it some time to see]
//

My friends machine (which older) broke from overheating (I presume related to this), and was repaired. It still has the same problem, with the paging file being used a lot too. I am now unable to update it. I believe the problem is related to window update.

Here's a screenshot from my laptop (looked/looks the same in other machines):

Screenshot - 2016-03-08 , 22_59_15.png

I found this post (forums.techguy.org) from a year ago (previous post also possibly relevant)
Hey guys, i too had this problem, i did consult various forums before ending up on microsoft support agents, i got the information that this was indeed a known bug that bundled itself up on windows 7 and probably 8 win(management) framework 3.0 & ^ update and involves handle leakages{ more casual : resource/memory leakage} so that this "super process" svchost(ntsvc) only acquires memory and fails to let go once done using it, there is presently a fix to this issue inform of a hotfix that you download and install onto your computer, it did help but afterwards you gotta be careful with you updates or the bug will show up again.

have a look at this link : microsoft community.
https://support.micr...com/en-us/kb/2889748

I did risk applying the hotfix because they said it should only be applied by those who are greatly affected by the bug, it worked like a charm and now this "process" only uses {3-5}% of my R.A.M while previously it could use upto 70% memory.

Last updates were installed 2016.03.23
The problem machine is unable to get windows updates. I get offered one update (which I believe was on offer but not installed last time updates were checked on April 11th). It's unable to download it (it tries but always 0 from 0mb). Internet connection is working fine.

=> so I decided to try the KB2889748 mentioned in the quote above
Guess what it does before installing -- it checks windows updates (via a small dialogue box) and also cannot get any results. So it goes nowhere. I just closed the machine down.

I'm hoping someone here will have some sort of creative idea here -- or have lately experienced the same/similar problem.
If I've forgotten any relevant/important info - please ask, and I'll add it.
TIA

Living Room / Zip Drives revisited
« on: May 27, 2016, 02:01 PM »
I had to get something off of a zip-drive disc today, so I had to dig out my Iomega 250 Zip Drive.
Hearing that whine and click is still so familiar. I stopped really using them at least ten years ago (but I'd say it was longer back).

IIRC, at the time I bought it, the 250MB drive was a recent big advance over the older 100MB drive/disks. The discs actually look really like the floppys, just fatter (this disc is one of the 100MB ones).

So, for nostalgia's sake, here's a few images

  • I notice that if I click 'No' for 'Was this review helpful to you?' below customer reviews on amazon -- it now has zero effect
  • If the review had, say: 'One person found this helpful', and I refresh the page there is no change
  • If no one has clicked either way on the review, the negative vote still does not show

This the case on amazon.com & amazon.de

This combined with a lot of dodgy (obviously rigged) reviews for many products is making me pretty wary of amazon.

I'm just after signing up for the Affinity Window's beta programme.
https://affinity.ser...f.com/en-us/windows/

Affinity Photo (image editor)
Affinity Designer (Vector software)

I'll focus on Affinity Photo, as that's what I have the most info about (and it sounds the more promising of the two).
Affinity Photo:
from Serif, has been available on mac for over a year now. It aims to compete directly with Photoshop. They emphasise that their software is 50US$ which includes two years updates, in contrast to Photoshop which requires a subscription -- with Lightroom, 8 to 10US$/month (+taxes), depending on location.

All that's no good if it dont work. Here's what they promise:
https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/
These days it's often difficult to get a simple list of features on websites... so, a video:
https://vimeo.com/132757806

Quotes from reviews of the mac version:
[..] running a Macbook Pro 15" with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB Hybrid Drive.
As a rough comparison, my Photoshop install typically takes between 45 seconds to 2 minutes to boot up and start running. Affinity Photo takes between 10-20 seconds.
//
Where Affinity really shines is its speed and price. It is definitely affordable, and its performance is spectacular. It is fast, well organized and has almost everything that most image editors might require on a daily basis. It has all of the brushes you need to get the job done, with a lot of customization features.
http://www.sitepoint...-photo-image-editor/
(March 10, 2015)

Overall, Affinity Photo is a fabulous program that really does rival the best professional and enthusiast-level image-editing packages on the market. It easily takes the lead over previous Serif programs that we've seen for PC, and is a worthy winner of Apple's 'Mac App of the Year' award, 2015.

Sounds interesting.

Living Room / Need a new Keyboard - advice?
« on: February 16, 2016, 05:30 AM »
Need a new keyboard:
I dont type a whole lot, but use the keyboard *a lot* for keyboard shortcuts. I find for pressing shortcut keys, I need a keyboard with minimal resistance. I'd also like a better quality keyboard than my previous one (Logitech Deluxe 250 - see paragraph 3 below)

I recently bought a Kensington K72357 (amazon) which IIUC is mechanical. It's like a laptop keyboard, for typing it seems okay, but for pressing keyboard shortcuts, it has too much resistance. (I notice when typing, my hands are over the keyboard, so any resistance is less of a problem due to 'weight-of-hand'. When pressing shortcut, my hand/wrist is often resting on the table, so I have to use quite a lot of effort to press the keys. Considering my wrists are already half-wrecked from this work, I think I'll have to get something else.)

For the last few years, I used a Logitech Deluxe 250:
I see I bought it in August 2007, so it has served me well. For typing it wasnt that nice, but easy to use. For shortcuts it was great.

I'm considering the Logitech K800 (new egg). I wouldnt really want to have to pay any more than that (90$ / 80€) and would be happy if I got something cheaper ;-)
I dont like the idea of wireless though -- batteries are one more thing to worry about, I just want to be able to plug it in and that's it.

So open to any suggestions. TIA :)
