I think Messenger Plus have gotten so much attention for being carrier of Adware they would not do such a thing. Many find it bad enough as it is.

Anyway, I checked Spybot&Destroy for NSIS. They added it October last year and have updated many times, last January. So I guess we can assume S&D will catch this. I guess same goes for similar tools. I would scan over and over. From the comments at the NSIS remover page disinfection appears to be hard so grab what you can and attack.

If not successful may be an idea to go through a Hijackthis rutine - post it at some security forum like this http://forums.majorg...orumdisplay.php?f=35 , if not here. Could be necessary to seek geeks if removal is impossible unless following a specific order of actions.

What AV let this happen btw?

Should you try again later it really should be straightforward http://developer.moz.../Extension_Packaging

What tool you use to zip/unzip? May be not a good idea to use Wordpad, go Notepad or other clean editors.

There is another solution. Disable Firefox ability to check for compatibility. Insert user_pref("extensions.checkCompatibility", false); in user.js which is in main profile folder or go about:config and add it. I dont think it is present right now. If so just change/toggle value to false. To make a new - rightclick, New, Boolean, insert pref name extensions.checkCompatibility doubleclick to toggle value to false or rightclick and select toggle. Restart Firefox and the old stable View Currency will install.

Just repack it like you would a zip file. If whatever you use insist on zip extension a rename should work. Hmm, depends on packing format? I dont know but in Total Commander build in zipper certainly can do it - and it is a common one. I open xpi file/view file list, click edit for install.rdf - edit away in external editor, ends with saving this temporary file - back to TC it offers to repack into xpi. Done.

Same as mine and same as the one FileHippo list http://www.filehippo...nload_smartftp/tech/

SMARTFTP.KEY is your license file right? I dont have that either. You didnt use a key-thingy to make that file? Crap must come from somewhere so just asking. You can see from Google http://openwares.org./ has been and may be still is a distribution center of this, any downloads from there?

XPI is like a ZIP file and can be opened with Total Commander, 7-Zip etc. May be even XPs build-in unzipper.

Change max version to 2.0.0.* so it allows latest 2.0.0.2 and above. 3 or 10 would also work :)

Latest versions are almost always the best with this - well do check changelog so you know which bugs are in "stable" version http://viewmycurrency.wordpress.com/ Beta, alpha, stable loses meaning with extensions (Firefox...)

This install.rdf trick is not always the same as when author declare "Added: Support for Firefox 2" - often works but depends on extension.

I have used View Currency, was ok but I thought Change was a bit more lightweight https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3399/ more manual to operate. Now I dont use any.

81
But if NSIS came from other source than SmartFTP? I dont know. If the regular security programs say you are clean and there are none of those traces I guess you are. NSB133.TMP is also not part of SmartFTP, or I dont have it at least, so who knows what damage have been done.

SmartFTP people cant be that dumb? Would be nice if Filehippo reported back to you and confirmed initial version was infected with adware installation.

82
Since you are infected http://kichik.net/20.../nsis-media-remover/ but other programs should be able to handle it by now. May be some useful info in comments.

83
I just downloaded and installed SmartFTP from Filehippo. Kaspersky, S&D and I could not recognize NSIS, no file traces. Same version, file is called SFTPNSI.EXE, 3.337.00 bytes.

Directory Freedom or DF for Dos and short file names only http://home.comcast....bitmason/dflyer.html In late 80s, early 90s it made Philips XT computer seem responsive. Written in assembler he says - Norton Commander was bloat ;)

Check this video where author of Firebug presents version 1.0 http://yuiblog.com/b...ideo-hewitt-firebug/

87
http://thepiratebay..../Hirens_Boot_Cd_8.8_ notice comment at bottom. May be not true but there is a reason tool often appear more than once at places like Piratebay. People usually are helpful in evaluating downloads so if you wait some days after "release" you should be safe.

I once had a site bookmarked which were all about Hirens and ways to improve it, add extra funtions, make it work from usb drive etc. Pretty sure he offered "safe" downloads. Think it was a Danish site in English. Lost it but may be Google can help.

88
Yeah, safe to use of course but because patches work like many other cracks it is normally not permitted to link to such files, on forums like DC. Was just wondering that there are good cracks and bad cracks ;) I think there is but probably not from MS point of view. This is getting rid of annoyances you already paid for, not the usual effect of a crack but still modifying holy files.

Hirens Boot CD http://en.wikipedia....Hiren's_boot_CD Ive also seen talked about like it was just a nifty tool anyone should have. Strange it does not come up in a search here, it should. Some of those places will definitely not permit linking to other cracks/warez. But this cd is generally approved for public consumption like WLM patches are. I got that cd too.

Convenient but illegal  :o

Feature has been in Firefox since 1.5 http://kb.mozillazin...ry.max_total_viewers no tricks needed to activate.  Ive heard some say Operas cache is still faster so may Firefox version has some delay, not so efficient, has problems with certain pages or whatever. Same thing though and it does work, very much depending on content. Some pages are almost as fast with normal cache, others clearly take advantage of quick-cache.

May be you followed some tweak guide and have it disabled? To save ram perhaps. In Fasterfox this is "Fastback" - second shot from bottom http://fasterfox.moz...org/screenshots.html

Might want to disable Fasterfoxs enhanced prefetching http://fasterfox.moz...#What_is_prefetching not really a popular feature and why some dont like extension. Not all file types are prefetched but he says it is up to web master to prevent or not his problem so hmmm. Be careful with what preset you chose, check what is being enabled. Should you want to uninstall first chose "Default" preset, restart Firefox then uninstall.

Living Room / Re: Thoughts on why Digg failed
« on: February 23, 2007, 12:07 PM »
I can recognize most of what he says, though not taken any part of the digging up and down, hunt for frontpage etc. Difference to a forum without management is very little. Same forum can have good content of course - like some videos on Youtube are great. As he says they already have rules to avoid the worst comment fighting - a few more could limit numbers of duplicates and intentionally stupid headlines. Matter of what they want, not impossible to police. If there were visible management only few would not understand rules - same people who get kicked out of forums and other places.

All that about being "top" submitter, getting many diggs while original story from yesterday get zero - hopeless no matter algorithms. Not taking it seriously seems easy to me.

User submitted links has not much to do with journalism but Digg has proved system works as attraction/entertainment. Now MSN is testing similar setup in some countries. Too bad for Digg since it could be more difficult to sell concept and regret they didnt go for highest bid when there was interest. Ive never understood how it could be of much value anyway. Same goes for Youtube. All they have is traffic - anything else can be copied easy, already is. Not like users are loyal to X site! Sooner than later nobody cares and go for next brightest light, matter of guiding traffic. But I dont understand internet deals.

You could use Custom Buttons as tinjaw mentioned http://custombuttons.../viewtopic.php?t=469 check "Home Button Enhancement".

Problem with that extension is last alpha was from October 2006.

If you can live with Bookmarks folder try this to avoid having to rename icons:

/* Line below hide icons for folders - the way I use it, skip it if not useful */
.bookmark-item[type="menu"] > .toolbarbutton-icon {display: none !important;}

toolbarbutton.bookmark-item:not(.bookmark-group):not([type="menu"]) > .toolbarbutton-text {display: none !important;}

/* Change space around bookmark toolbar icons */
toolbarbutton.bookmark-item:not(.bookmark-group):not([type="menu"]) > .toolbarbutton-icon {
margin: 0px -2px 0px 0px !important;
padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px !important;}

Throw above in a userchrome.js file, nothing to it should you not know about this http://www.mozilla.o...ort/firefox/edit#css Practically every pixel can be customized but I dont know how to move bookmarks. Some extension can probably do it.

I use Google Bookmarks more and more btw, mainly because of Gmarks https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2888/ You can move that about as you please. I have a button for same icons I have in bookmark bar - which is not used much at all. Loads of options, import/export - organizing, Google Reader integration http://groups.google.../GMarks/web/features I have some problems with caching of icons, a bit messed up but works fast enough. Firefox just dont seem to cut it after xxx bookmarks, Gmarks I use for special purposes, taking load off Firefox - or something.

To do what you request with Gmarks select Display tab, focus on Gmarks Toolbar, set name for label/folder (I use toobar!) - tick show icons only. Bookmark what you want to see with chosen label and place Gmarks toolbar where you want. Possible to have subfolders even.

Other services can do the same but I prefer Gmarks/Google since it is only about bookmarks and works fast.

How about moving navigation buttons to bookmarks bar? Save pixels for browsing.

Ive seen Errorsafe at Youtube so why complain?

You probably wont find Google, Microsoft officially approve of Errorsafe ads but what happens. Why should ad approval be bugfree? There is also the type of ads where you know product/shop/whatever is crap without being directly evil to user. How advertising and internet works. Could be a long debate why Errorsafe is so much worse than some other ads.

May be a good idea to be suspicious towards any output from a program which encourage you to pay for background, winks, icons etc. ;)

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« on: February 18, 2007, 07:54 PM »
Will be scanned again since changed. iSwift and iChecker take care of it - good support site/faq http://www.kaspersky...2/tech?qid=193239261

Both enabled by default. Guess iSwift kicks in when limitations of iChecker is reached, "wrong" extension and size.

In reports and during scan you see a status and reason column, says iSwift for some, iChecker for others when files are skipped.

Just found out it can make a CD rescue disk using PE Builder http://www.kaspersky...rescue?qid=193239066 - nice.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package

Im testing Kaspersky right now! Have the feeling they might run off with the money unless it blows up during next few days. Would probably say the same if I tried NOD32 again but I like the extra "Pro Active" whatever stuff not available in NOD32, only takes a bit more setup. More or less like a Firewall with outbound control popups or application control.

So Ive disable office and http scanner module but Kaspersky does not really use that much ram f0dder - but you certainly feel cpu usage when scanning on demand. Ram usage also go way up while scanning. Ok, slow but great is better than the opposite. Resident part I dont notice, have enabled magical scanning so only changed/new files are interesting. Guess it works, after a total scan of course. I just did 447000 files in 2702 archives, took 52 min. :o More than once I thought Firefox had died but it was only Kaspersky working! I think they can improve "Concede resources to other applications" feature! May be a bug. All the GUI around events, stats, settings beats NOD32 but not so hard to do. Nice looking program.

Actually compuer could hardly boot after installing Kaspersky. Think it needed an update, known boot bug. After some clicking at warning pop ups (all those injection threads and suspicious registry calls are all over!) it boots smoothly. The "beta" section of their forum is either cool or scary, still fighting to get engine updated it seems. Open beta forum cant be bad.

Btw, not that Im interested but Zonealarm Internet Suite 7 also use this engine and should receive updates as Kaspersky delivers. Options will be limited of course but if stable may be really good value for 50$ http://www.zonelabs....sskulist2_comparison Possible better than Kasperskys own suite at 60$, using Outpost firewall I think.

You never get the perfect one so must cut down on requirements here or there. Really complicated to only pick based on what others say and quick trial runs. What brought me to Xampp. Sometimes you get a now-I-get-it experience from fooling around :) Have to invest some time.

Also notice the way people react when they have found a favorite pet. Not only recommendable but superb. Even the worst crap is lovely! Im thinking of comments at Opensourcecms, some obviously spam but I think I can smell that some have spend tons of time and finally beaten X - and NOW it is the best! Ruling Joomla ADM section might give the sensation... So be careful about recommendations. Didnt I just say it was easy to hack Serendipity into whatever? True, but I also have 55 forum threads bookmarked, heh. Really it is easy but may be not obvious - definitely requries some time.

Website Baker thinks of end-user that is true. The site Im messing around with in Xampp is for my brothers business and Im still wondering if I should not change to Baker instead of S9Y coolness of hacking. He is the one who eventually will use it not me, hmm. Lots of themes available for Baker too, easy to "fix" visuals. One problem Ive noticed is any more than a basic site really needs a "menu2" plugin or you are stuck with 1 menu block only. Not much swift modification possible, default goal is the simple site consisting of limited static content I guess, but it can be expanded. Ive seen some rather big ones in their showcase forum. If it cant meet requirements out of the box cut and paste post to their forum. Reply might tell a story about support.

Possible a plugin is needed for that cross site updating but you sure that is major problem? Even the little s9y has a content rewrite plugin. Strings {from} {to}, cant be Drupal and others dont have similar. Fire up some plugin maker then.

The really good ones like Drupal you can make into whatever just by clicking around in Administration. I find that easy with Drupal at least, messing around with visuals which often follows change of content not so much - close to not at all ;) I would like to use hot Drupal but when I see people being told to investigate default theme to obtain knowledge on how to do simple changes I run away. Knowledge is above hack level ;) Did you try new version 5? I dont really remember the old. Drupal site is overwhelming like Wordpress but I cant see same direct support from project sized as s9y, Web Site Baker.

98
One of those I would have prefered to Serendipity was MODx http://modxcms.com/ but good example of why some love this and others hate that. I can see it is "cool", I can see it offers all most would want from cms/blog/whatever but I just hate interface and find it confusing to modify - even after testing properly on local Xampp. That is how I "evaluate", get it on Xampp then look for learning curve - if neck has to go all the way back to see it Im out. Room for misunderstandings and wrong judgement of course but a lot better than reading feature pages and trying demo sites on internet.

Advantage of WP is also you can pick and chose among a gazillions of themes and extensions. So many some will be buggy, not so compatible but still selection is biggest benefit to smaller project where you have to settle with whats available, may be even wait for things to come. Does not speak of quality in code or other featues regular enduser dont notice at first. I know some of those people at s9y shake head at WPs security and general code quality - yeah well but who is no. 1? ;) Same with Drupal, Joomla - perhaps a handful more. Popular gets more popular then - but if you, as an enduser with no intention of hacking, go crazy on Xampp testing (there is much more to test than what is on Opensourcecms) I think you will find popularity is mostly earned.

Changelog for all these project will be full of security fixes - again turns you to the most updated, most supported project. Smaller projects might not be able to close all holes just like that - or is slow at releasing fixes. For sites that matters security fixes should be regarded a "feature" - also why to avoid those not updated for months. Can be long time in world of server/php exploitations. If SMF went out of business I think you would see a change of forum software here very quickly.

I once almost got kicked out of a web space after experimenting with an upload script - as part of amateur SMF hacking :) Worked ok but also for those uploading files to site, phishing away, heh. Barcleys Bank or whoever it was in UK did not like it, neither did server ADM. Got loads of traffic from Israel I think, like 1000s of hits within hours. They blaimed SMF security completely but failed to notice it was upload script I found at HotScripts living inside SMF, not related to it at all. Possible it could have been an extension/plugin to SMF, was in a way. And how many phpBB forums have not been taken down because of their so so security? Even the locale/national support site here got hit once they waited few days to upgrade with latest crucial patch. Secuirty is important.

« on: February 17, 2007, 05:03 AM »
True, but as said you get different impression of Google and search results if you change default search page to "Advanced" or started to use geeky operators http://www.googlegui...ators_reference.html Have to "work around" advertising powers no matter they come from Googles calculations or SEO "hacking" tricking Google. Im all into Google, must live with the machine, but dont trust any search from their "address bar" for one second. Im still surprised some expect "genuine" result from a top 10 hitlist regardless of search terms. Top 10  is all you get. Worlds information on 1 page? Im sure Google and advertiser know how few click page 2, use top 20 hitlist or even think may be I used wrong terms! All points at playing the system.
