Living Room / Re: Infected file in system32 folder?
« on: April 08, 2007, 04:51 PM »
Hmm not good enough I think, must know details - how you know it has not mutated or whatever?

Tell Avast to do a full bootscan - much better chance of correct detection and removal. Will kick in before most of XP does and one of the best features of progam.

Write down information and look it up on internet - could be this http://www.sarc.com/...ckdoor.easyserv.html or not. Must get similar info when you know more. To check what damage might have been done and to be sure it is really gone.

Also be ready to fire up S&D, Windows Defender, a-squared Free and what else you got. The more the better try a-squared http://www.emsisoft....om/en/software/free/

There is more you can do for ID. Send file to VirusTotal http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html Most AVs check it then. You get lots of different name for same trojan - use relevant name when looking up details. They dont agree on standards. Must be 100% sure of details or you might start to manually "recover" the wrong items ;) Could also be false positive.

When done find out what went wrong. You have IE7 and Windows Defender installed? Would "immunize" from S&D have changed anything? Which program installed trojan?, was Avast set up properly? and so on. How does Hijackthis report look like?

Avast is ok but not the best for trojans or detection of stuff it does not know about. If you figure programs has failed look elsewhere. Antivir/Avira is as good as the best but free version do not cover "malware" - so might not have changed much. May be try AOL Antivirus http://www.activevir...us/freeav/index.adp? based on Kaspersky and I believe uses their "extended database" = covers whatever. See if Kaspersky find it at VirusTotal.

Windows Defender also does some system monitoring btw. Is light, also in detection but some use with free AVs since they often have disabled malware part. Checking up on browser/system changes is rarely free. You can disable resident part and just have it ready for disaster but reason to install is just resident part. Rest is covered already.

So even if you can disinfect by deleting file (which is doubtful until some AV type of programs agree) you will know why it is a good idea to have updated copies of UBCD and UBCD4WIN http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html The DOS thing have Mcafee and F-Prot, the cd is really a XP Live CD and has as default Avira as full scanner plus several Anti-Spyware programs, all can update themself over internet. Practically all hardware is supported so may be try UBCD4WIN. No effort required, run UBCD4WinBuilder.exe from installation folder - and put in a blank cd. You will need XP SP2 original files and perhaps also run through options - for each entry in a long list you can toggle this or that, for example let scanners update themself before burning to cd. Default should be fine though might be a good idea to do the updating should internet/LAN not work. In worst case have a look at their forum. 95% point and plug for sure. Can also be used if XP simply cant boot - pop it in and you have access to all files. Lots of uses really. Perfectly legal, only freeware and your own legal copy of XP is used.

You need SUPERSITE for Windows http://www.winsupersite.com/vista/ - give in.

Windows Classic is still available f0dder. No need to submit to MS defaults. If you also disable/tweak new gadgets I would think you have a slightly improved XP - and will be happy with purchase :) DX10 games will take care of what is left of hmmm - well after you have bought faster video card and game developers are done with DX10 magic.

Crying about buggy drivers, lack of drivers, strange incompatibilities, having to wait for program updates was also reality in 2000 and 2001 ;) All know it is just the way OS upgrades works. Now getting used to periode, hyping over. Many times worse for 64bit Vista Ive read. Comes with 32bit retail right? Get it that way if necessary.

Only problem I can relate to without having tried Vista for a long periode is no support for more than 4gb of ram. Then assume all buy those new hard disks with tons of ram onboard, use flashdrives or what? Could be a problem for some, hopefully not MS way of promoting 64bit. Some logic in that limit? A "feature" of 32bit?

Im ever so happy with XP and plan to stick with it for 1-2 years more. Then possibly dump Windows all together and go linux - which will have matured even more at that time. Gaming interest can change that plan unfortunately. Too much "Vista only" from this or that software might get me annoyed enough to upgrade but I dont think situation is comparable to W9x vs XP. Hope not.

Internet is lovely for cheap hidden advertising/spamming. Mercedes Benz Denmark recently send out test drive invitations to handpicked bloggers - of course followed by encouragement to blog about the experience. May be just a bright idea by local marketing dep. who have noticed something about viral ads, product placement - but could be worldwide tactics. What does BMW, Samsung etc. and do?

Tech world has always been the worst, may be because it is tied so closely to internet. Not sure anyone care/pay attention to this - part of the game, to be expected. Nvidia, ATI, Microsoft or whoever - all in it together. Listen to latest TWIT 93, from about 48:55 and 1.5 minute forward, a tiny battle between 2 of them ending with "So tell me about the last time you bought a computer product Mr. Ethics". I assume he was among those who got free notebook from MS so he could review Vista. Nice that such poor people get a helping hand ;) This does not cause a stir, seen as a joke I guess. How it is in tech world.

PS: I alas have had to pay for every single one of my graphics cards

If you review hardware parts I doubt you are telling the whole truth. Ok so you pay but only 50% right? ;) Ive seen a few sites/reviewers making a big deal out of the fact they DONT review handpicked/sent items from anyone but instead go out and buy them from random shop. I think that is very uncommon.

All this reminds me of why I dumped a local tech site/forum - like a small Cnet. Started out pretty good but then someone noticed one of their advertisers were a well known convicted idiot who have cheated for years. Dodgy online shops, spamming you name it. He just asked how it could be they accepted such a sponsor and got into big trouble with ADM powers. At first they rejected any talk of a problem but after some pushing finally had to announce they did not care as long as they benefited, and then complainer, who I wished was me, got banned. They also are fast to make articles about products kindly supplied by X shop etc. etc. Same old tricks. Since much of internet works because of outside monetary influences no use in crying, cant be avoided - Google ads are here to stay. Matter of being able to look people in the eye and giving them facts - whatever they are. Full disclosure allowing enough transparency for people to see who have an interest in what or nothing - if none consider content advertising. Nvidias straw men were annoying because nobody likes the feeling of being tricked. Mercedes Benz invite got known because one of the bloggers did not have a driving license but she do have a podcast, heh. Did not like being seen as a tool. Others might see this as chance of getting nice rebate on next car.

Find And Run Robot / Re: not freeware !!!
« on: April 05, 2007, 12:17 PM »
Why is there a need to live up to an outdated definition of what freeware is? - or what this or that person think? I dont understand need for standard and dont think there is one either. Lots of free software is "questionable" - silly to only look at how easy it is for user to download and install. Not having to go to site of author is a purpose?

Try look around at that newsgroup. Start asking questions like - is freeware also illegal software? You sure Real and Apple nod when they see their codecs distributed as FREE? like in K-Lite or the Alternative codec packs? I doubt it but people are happy, easy to install so who cares. Pro is better than non-Pro right? http://groups.google...c4d#51cfdfd3bb66cc4d "We dont like that here" about WMV format, blah blah. This little not so bad program says in about box "If you like this free program then please visit my webpage and donate" and there http://www.jlc-software.com/ you notice same request at top besides a Paypal button. BUT software itself is true freeware as opposed to that on DC? If there is a spirit of freeware DC has it as much as any other program.

The popular AV program Avast, approved in freeware newsgroup, do the same thing about registration - requires you to update regulary and visit their site - like you had to at first installation. Wahhh ;)

So I installed WDS 3.01 again and now no reindex mania. Practically same conditions except a minor update to Kaspersky AV. I would think difference is Ive yet to add that many folders. Last time I included almost everything from start, this time I add one at a time. Did exclude some irelevant folders like Temp etc. but most were target. Will assume that was problem.

Was sure Kaspersky had bad influence so before indexing first time I put SearchProtocolhost.exe, SearchFilterHost.exe, SearchIndexer.exe and WindowsSearch.exe in Trusted applications. Problem is WDS also works correctly if I dont ;)

57
Think you are right about the little Outlook issue http://search.msn.co...CANTFINDANYEMAIL.htm - but in general it works for everything or there is a plugin/ifilter available.

Dont think there is so much control over WDS, not like you can schedule like with Locate32. Can always shut down service, restart. Idea is definitely to leave it running.

My problem was WDS started to index from scratch at every boot and I think also if I manually told it to rescan. Seems to work fast enough, though of course a bit heavy on the harddisk - Im used to Kaspersky so no problem ;) Should have done more troubleshooting but gave up when I saw other people with similar problem. Could be I should not have told WDS to scan almost every folder/file on hd. I wanted more than just "my documents". Did exclude some but 99% were targets.

58
Yeah no comparison, also the instant preview is pretty neat. Unless you have a need for such indexing it might seem like Locate is so much better but not really in same category. I tried it out because I thought it could be useful for some less file-aware people I know - I came to like it more than expected.

I still have Locate installed - even more permanently since I discovered a plugin for Total Commander. Locate + TC is twice the speed :) http://www.ghisler.c...iewtopic.php?t=14087

Check out help file of WDS - has quite advanced command line options. Worked really well, fast as hxxx - just that reindexing problem.

59
Yeah very nice - beats Google, Copernic by far I think. But some have had problems with 3.01 - will reindex everything for every boot. More about this bug or whatever at the 2 Search forum here http://forums.micros...upID=25&SiteID=1 Should be on page 1 or 2. An example http://forums.micros...1319409&SiteID=1 Different solutions and ideas on what is wrong. None applied to me - I thought Kaspersky but not sure, did not uninstall AV to check - disable might not be enough. Also tried 3.0 which should not cause this but it did. Helped some. 3.0 is still available for download.

Bar can be floating and I think also called by shortcut. Is in Explorer and even IE with Live bar as well. If a waste you dont use WDS enough ;)

60
Not updated since some time but I guess MAF or Mozilla Archive Format is what you are after so dusty http://maf.mozdev.org/index.html to the rescue - note forum showing how to install on Firefox 2 http://www.createfor...m.com/phpbb/maf.html

Perhaps consider Scrapbook http://lifehacker.co...scrapbook-168744.php

Find And Run Robot / Re: not freeware !!!
« on: March 18, 2007, 03:08 PM »
Reading those FREEWARE fighters complaints about DC I just cant distinguish between supporting a way of distributing software and the need to pay absolutely nothing like in being cheap - no offense to edyshor which seems to have more of an annoyance problem, partly based on technical rules of what freeware is. Not sure it relates to 2007 and how software chain works. Seems to be monetary interest no matter where you look - DC way of getting by is "light" compared to many other "schemes" CCleaner with its Yahoo toolbar (Uh we got lucky, he made a non-toolbar build just for us - it is saved!), free as bait for payware etc. Or may be site of program is getting so much traffic Google Ads kicks in! Wonder if Hijackthis was not sold to Trend Micro had it been DC ware. Winsnap author dont think so http://www.ntwind.co.../viewtopic.php?t=652

Firefox is open source and freeware - also using the biggest money machine on internet. Same which try to guide me to ad-links while I read alt.comp.freeware :) Does not matter because it is freeware and 100% convinient to download and install. Yeah yeah but dont talk about ethics... How many Firefox users are aware they join the party while searching or using default start page? 1 out of 100, may be.

In case this false positive does not come from good old file scanner you might want to spend some time setting up Kaspersky. At least initially there can be many popups from extra security features - most I think disabled in "Basic" installation. "Potentially dangerous software" is one, not even enabled in "Advanced" installation or what they call it. Then comes Proactive Defense, Activity Analyzer and Integrity Control. Ive seen some suggesting this is only for advanced users so disable, others say these features is what make Kaspersky better. Blah, blah - if used they have to be set correctly all the way through and warnings (always prompt for action!) must be understood.

63
Dont think that is a limitation really and yes it does work. Convenient, especially for those with disabled System Restore and no other backup. If I did lots of of registry editing I would want a real undo feature though, Erunt dont replace that. Can easily replace backup/restore feature in Resplendent Registry Editor http://www.resplende...trar_features_backup in case you thought that added value to purchase.

I once had to restore registry files through Windows Recovery Console ("Restoring the registry with ERDNT - Emergency Scenario II" in readme) Would have been more successful had I used Erunt with Autoback.exe as startup program.

64
If I were your wife you would not use 45 Euros on a Regsitry Editor  8)

http://www.pcmag.com...,1895,1766392,00.asp might be an alternative. I think there are a few others but main attraction is undo/history. Last I looked no freeware editors lets you undo changes, how I found this. You can get all their tools for 20$ btw. http://www.pcmag.com...,1895,1847182,00.asp order by date and you see they still throw out small programs.

Registry monitoring, defragging you can get elsewhere for free. Erunt can do backups http://www.larsheder...e.t-online.de/erunt/

Regworks Lite also has undo http://www.regwrks.com/ 15$

Registry Workshop http://www.torchsoft.../rw_information.html is more like the fat Resplendent Registry Manager - but may be more actively maintained. When last version of Resplendent came out they had not yet done the "Feature Comparison Chart" page between pro and lite - still not done! Be sure undo is not in lite though. Should be checked out before paying up.

Living Room / Re: Choosing a keyboard and a mouse
« on: March 16, 2007, 02:43 PM »
MX 3000 combo is what I have now and no major complaints yet. I even like the hated Logitech software, Setpoint. Im not sure what specs are common for those you mention but because of this mouse I know I will always want scroolwheel with left/right button features and thumb buttons on the side. So much easier/faster to navigate browser when you assign tab switching to thumb buttons and next/previous extension shortcuts to scrollwheel button.

Im just looking at retired MX 700 mouse and remembered all these quick steps did not work very well. Thumb buttons too small, strangely placed as well - and no button on scrollwheel. Ergonomics is all that matters, for you that is. MX 3000 and I assume MX 3200 fits my hand size perfectly. You have to test with own body parts to be sure but you can see at Logitech site keyboard is quite big and spacy, not too many gadgets. Most is useful. Fx keys could be bigger is about only problem I can think of. If I want to complain I would prefer more rounded buttons instead of narrow/thin ones for zoom buttons on mouse and media stuff on keyb. Im not really interested in zooming but since Setpoint lets you assign whatever to whatever they could be more useful - perhaps back/forward in browsers, almost no use for mouse gestures then. They are so narrow you almost feel they could cut finger!

http://www.logitech....2162,CONTENTID=10709

66
Linkification I would guess. Text Link http://piro.sakura.n...ul/_textlink.html.en dont have this problem because of the way it works. Less aggressive, does nothing to content unless you doubleclick. Not as thorough as Linkification but good enough.

Yeah Power Desk is nice for going through everything and cleaning up. I bought it because of convinience, not going to replace TC, but is better with some things and covers weak spots in TC.

67
If you want to buy XP get cheapest XP Home OEM. Unless you need Pro features dont pay extra. Consider Vista perhaps, does not cost much more - check http://www.shg.dk Software, MS Windows OEM. I dont see much reason to pay much higher retail price.

But why not try to fix Windows Installer problem, reinstall http://msdn2.microso...ibrary/aa372856.aspx or look around at the links from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia....ki/Windows_Installer Error you get is probably well known. See if you can find error code then look it up http://support.micro...cid=fh;en-us;kbhowto "windows installer" plus error code should give answers.

68
Split Browser http://piro.sakura.n...splitbrowser.html.en has not been mentioned. Works very well and I think the only useful one of this kind.

69
Me too - or a script since I noticed you have Greasemonkey installed. Not all 51xx scripts are bugfree. Disable and see what happens.

Also you have hopefully disable as default setting for Firebug? Can slow down browsing.

May be also try to turn on/off smooth scrolling in options, advanced, general. Some weird bug with mouse or whatever perhaps.

As Opera user this might be needed http://smoothwheel.mozdev.org/index.html takes some experiments but it works.

70
It is a beta, FileHippo has it. But also available at their site - http://www.smartftp.com/download/ at bottom.

I tend to agree with the SmartFTP guy replying on their forum Nighted. But sure is strange, installation process must have been corrupted in your case or did you cancel during and mistook leftovers for NSIS Media because names are similar? Too much security is problem ;)

71
Many people still have not upgraded to SP2 and could not care less.
And if those people aren't behind a NAT, it's their own fault when they get hit by the same-old worm, and they shouldn't whine and bitch about security.

Who cares, they just reformat :) Probably those aware of security who cry/shake head. The Myspace banner virus or what it was only affected people on unpatched XPs. Tons of people got caught, http://blog.washingt...ed_adware_to_mo.html Sad but just the way it is. 3rd party firewalls is like ages beyond this problem and those related (with some imagination I think those users approach to cracks, warez, porn, p2p etc. is easy to guess). Those not in direct danger get scared by such stories and barricade them self even more, heh. Business play on this of course.

72
True iphigenie, the guy I called Dr. Firewall certainly also promoted inbound firewall, router or Windows Firewall. He was defending the position of that being enough and for many people the better setup - as opposed to many security guides and well meaning forum posts claiming XP default is a risk to users, perhaps accompanied by link to a leak test as proof. Look around at a place like Wilders to get the idea but you see similar recommendations/warnings all over tech side of internet.

The layer thinking is nice, even MS says that is how you must look at security, but this advanced firewall demand should not be at top of list of things to do. Good practices and some awareness of being responsible for computers and own actions is way more important. Not like "attacks" come from out of the blue, sources/reasons are the same old. Many people still have not upgraded to SP2 and could not care less. Depends who you are. If every other layer including user behavior is in place I really dont see much of a need for outbound control. I see and recognize the need to tinker and feel in control etc. - why they temporarily have caught my interest.

Go crazy http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?p=351107 ;)

Btw, Im not so sure those fat do-it-all packages is a bad thing. I wouldnt mind one if I had that desire. Must be flexible and modular build of course. You see all the known companies trying to justify their AV, their Anti-Spyware, their Firewall - all with more and more features and yet melting together. Bundle make sense to me, also thinking of subscription fee! If well done package should be easier to install and maintain for most people. No compatibility issues should be guranteed. I dont think majority is willing to have an arsenal of security programs. Geeks will always prefer special programs, the not so popular but much better product.

73
Success of a 3rd party firewall depends on how many people get annoyed by default rules/settings.

Some time ago there was a long debate (another) on Wilders about the need for such advanced firewalls. Of course most people there cant live without but there was one guy who seemed like Dr. Firewall who argued that he would recommend no Firewall at all if user is not absolutely on top of things, have read help file, have done personal setup etc. Made a lot of sense to me - about the time where I tried most of the free firewalls.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to edit .xpi, and with what?

Here is the latest official, not compatible version 0.38 from Add-on site. I just installed it on 2.0.0.2, after version check was enabled, seems to work. You do the testing.

Because of forum rules I have renamed so file has zip extension. Reverse to original xpi before installing.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to edit .xpi, and with what?
« on: March 03, 2007, 10:14 PM »
You replaced already existing max version number with 2.0.0.* right? Dont change anything else or put it at end of file.

Give me url to that stable oldie and I can do the change in 15 seconds with lovely TC. I dont know ZipZag - TC uses a simple internal zipper, no fancy format.

So now I know ZipZag - I remember trying it out long time ago, may be a bit overkill and payware  :o I really think just about any zip tool including WinRAR can do this but depending on how you unpack and repack settings must fit, preserve directory hierarchy for example.

Firefox is best when you only use what you actually USE. Get rid of Tech guy unless a need has popped up during this ;)
