Yeah, yeah http://developer.moz...reported-at-toorcon/

The bug-hunting reward  should be seen in light of how Bugzilla works and who they know are likely to find bugs. Those are busy people, developers, extension makers - nothing more than a pad on the back and probably more directed at delivering good documentation and follow up. Selling to spammers have nothing to do with reward.

I really dont think main stream media should put such security debates up on front page. They always twist it so it becomes a question of am I now safe using X or Y? Complete nonsense. Way too many eat it up and believe there is a direct link between a headline and internet security.

No-script = giving up if you use for what could be called "general safety", or dont dare enter internet without it enabled. The reason Firefox was made in the first place was certainly not to make user have to barricade them self, more like the opposite. Nothing to do with the extension but if it really was needed, in real life, you would have 2 browsers to pick between, Firefox would die very fast.

Living Room / Re: Buying New PC. Suggestions?
« on: September 28, 2006, 11:37 PM »
Would be best if motherboard had PCI-E slot. Most of these cheaper boxes use onboard video, which can be ok for anything but latest games, but should you upgrade in X months it will be a lot easier to find good PCI-E card than AGP. AGP are even more expensive - they are on their way out, availability might be a problem too. So a little extra cost today will be saved later. Seems like there are many options to pick from so should be possible to squeeze in.

Chose view source in browser, then search for "mov"

I had some trouble seeing them though - think some of them have gone 404/Bad request.

If you need a download manager and has the habit of saving videofiles try last freeware version of Net Transport http://www.321downlo...html#Net%20Transport

Jesse Ruderman also make The Burning Edge http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/ a much refered to site. Besides contributing to Firefox code/bugkilling big time. Anyway, Ive more than once seen people claim his site must be hacked because of links to "Porn Tools" but not a joke :o

No no, but disable "Enhanced Prefetching" If you also diasale Page Load Timer there is not much reason to use it since these are the only original features. I have same settings but as entries in user.js = manual tweaking. Then you have to find settings, be sure they are correct etc. And if you delete user.js they are still active because in prefs.js - all this Fasterfox take care of. Should you uninstall then first chose Default preset, restart Firefox - then uninstall extension.

Well TBE is overkill for most but amazing. Practically all other tab extensions are inspired by it. Some say the same of TMP so... Too much of a good thing perhaps. "This extension strongly unrecommended. Tab Mix is recommended instead of this, because it is stable, light, and it covers most useful features of this." and "Virtually, now no one can update TBE codes, excluding me. Its codes are like as entwined spaghetti. Many unknown bugs are maybe there, many known problems (with unknown reasons) too." :) his own words, heh. He dont skip features thats for sure but not as bad as he says. An example could be sessionsaving. TMP can will not save content in forms or textareas like this Im writing in right now. TBE does that which makes it 10 times more complicated. TMP authors and the guy behind sessionsaving in FF 2.0 say so. Content is saved over and over. File monitor will show. TMP and 99 out of 100 users are happy with 99% restoration hit rate, TBE goes for 100.

Make a new clean profile if you want to test current TBE. "Current" might be a problem, I see latest is from March - may be he is preparing for FF 2.0. Usually it is updated much more often. Real use for this is probably for Seamonkey users, they can get modernized and dont have to envy Firefox. There is also Multizilla or something.

Think I mentioned TBE because the guy never really gets mentioned and obviously has been ahead of extension game for years https://addons.mozil...firefox/9480/author/ Possible those inspired by him have made "better" extensions.

housetier, try Multisubmit http://www.onlies.ne...ultisubmit/index.php Not fully automated but pretty cool. If you want to sync those 2 services may be you should look elsewhere

Blummy might have something for you as well http://www.blummy.com/ 100s of bookmarklets already, 1 does Furl/Del.icio.us but probably just 2 popup windows. You can modify code, make your own.

Well Firefox 2.0 has undo tab and session saving, overall better with tabs so less need for Tab Mix. Still FF wont open new tabs right next to current put throw them way back - hopeless. So Tab Control is needed http://firefox-exten...tius.com/tab+control Also "power users" will need at least 2 lines of tabs, scrolling back and forth with arrows or moving tabs to get organized is no option with perhaps 20-30 open tabs. FF 2 has been much encouraged by Tab Mix and similar tools but still they leave out important features. I think they are worried to get that Opera look (initial overkill) - think more about grandma than power user who will know how to fix problem with extension/tweaks anyway. May be...

Tab Mix Plus is almost a must on 1.5.0.x that is true. Without any tuning and having 10-20+ tabs open it is close to annoying.

Tab Mix is called Mix because it originally was answer to the installation puzzle users had to make. There were 5-10 different Tab related extensions, sometimes conflicting etc. So someone decided to melt them together and there was Tab Mix. Guy got bombed with suggestions and kind of ran out of fuel. Others took over and there was Tab Mix Plus - current team. They have added own code and still do but some of the old smaller extensions are still alive. Tab Browser Extension has always been the original http://piro.sakura.n...nsions/index.html.en Like Tab Mix Plux x5. Huge and sometimes buggy. Shows just how much can be done with Firefox. He have done that since long, goes back to 2002! That guy got to be number 1 extension coder, his other tools are also special and ahead of time. At some point Mozilla even warned against TBE, not any more I think but it really takes over Tabs from Firefox.

About Fasterfox you better disable the prefetching. Not good for all servers. He has been flamed for that many times but says any server adm. can disable prefetching. Hmm, may be best if he did. Im not sure it is enabled by default. Best to use own preset not his or at least not the most aggressive. Very good tool for this tweaking stuff though. Can restore FF defaults 100% so pretty much foolproof.

Search Archives. Cnet have changed since 2004 and info is not available. What is so strange about Cnet giving out a bunch of stars? They do that to 100s of programs. I will surprised if they have changed 1 word in quote.

This dude here does not have be author, "partner" will do http://www.acasystem....com/en/partners.php Also not unusual.

258
That is a "User review", Cnet have not done "Editors review" of newer version so they use an old quote from 2004. http://www.acasystem...repro/award_cnet.htm Normal procedure...

General Software Discussion / Re: Data recovery software suggestions?
« on: September 19, 2006, 07:36 PM »
R-Studio digs deep - have found tons of gbs from my broken NTFS/FAT32 filetables more than once. 2 times even RAID 0! Now Ive learned to overclock the right way I dont need it but at the time I did try all other alternatives, 2-3 years ago. Only R-Studio could do it. Not only can it bring out stuff from dead filesystem but the recovery process is very straight forward and easy. One of the few I wouldnt mind paying for.

Anyway if you like some "trusted" known source behind these tools Avira(AntiVir) just put out another one Avira UnErase http://www.avira.com...avira_unerase_2.html Free "Personal" license. Select drive and it searches for lost files, thats it.

Dont be slave to defaults, tweak away. Adobe Acrobat is easy http://blogs.msdn.co...04/12/22/330288.aspx He refer to PDF Speedup at http://www.acropdf.com/ I use this program to speed it up http://www.tnk-bootb...rted&id=7F7290B5 Same thing. This can be done manually as well. Foxit is ok but not really Acrobat. If you read a lot of pdf-files many will prefer the big one. Noticeable difference before and after.

They also make an "enterprise" lighter version of Reader. Dont know much about it except that they dont announce it loudly. Try google but it wont be faster than a tweaked normal version.

261
No time or effort. I forgot Infolister http://mozilla.doslash.org/infolister/ which was mentioned earlier  :) You can modify output so I put description variable in bbcode template. With some tweaking fancy pages can be made in html http://mozilla.dosla...nfolister/templates/

Have just tried Save As Image https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3358/ in case Screenshot Capture dont work this should do.

Extension does more but actually all you need is a few lines in userchrome.css to combine stop/reload:

/* combine STOP and RELOAD buttons ------ */
#stop-button[disabled="true"] { display:none; }
#stop-button:not([disabled]) + #reload-button { display:none; }

Be sure stop button is to the left of reload before you apply or it wont work. Possibly the other way round  8)

There are also tricks/extensions for hiding tab-bar/toolbars, like bookmark bar only show when you hover mouse at menu bar for example. Annoying but some like it.

Miniflat is plain ugly  8) Matter of taste but Littlefox is more designed for maximum pixels https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/307/

Autohidestatusbar gives you more pixels, works very well http://caspar.regis.free.fr/ahs/

TinyMenu http://www.arantius....om/article/tiny-menu helps too.

And screen capture review is what sells big time!  8) Dont think I want to test for 1 hour because Im sure stats will confirm their linking is very much based on getting a penny or 2. Actually Im sure that is whole idea behind site - having that in mind their claims of why they bother becomes BS. We provide in-depth product reviews and comparisons so you never have to wonder again." Does not really change because they make nice to read list, layout feature only. "Reviews" of so many products have to be nicely set up, like a phone book!

Hardware world is even worse... If 10 star is the best, expect 8.5 do be worst etc.

Dont be surprised about Microsoft or Mozilla for that matter using what is available of promotion. That is what this is about, marketing and advertiseing. On internet most things goes. And many eat it up. I generally hate ads but would lie if Im not influenced. Not from one ad with a nice lightly dressed lady or similar but the blog/forum hype you cant avoid. About the same with sites like DIGG, where does your interest go today? add some money and you have a business.

Too late being concerned about "hidden" ads counter - was it not Nvidia who admitted they use "bots" - paying people to join public forums and hyping products. So no one else does that of course, heh. Product placement, Viral ads??? hmm.

Internet also have information making sites like Toptenreviews look silly, for software this place could be one of them. Selecting source should be "surfing" not following ad links routing to sites like that. Tough sometimes...

http://www.quickonli...kr-tools-collection/ seems to cover what is available, updated this month. Search page for "download", at least a few more options I think.

Money, or expected money, involved does not encourage deep thoughts or necessarily the right ranking among products. Besides, with so many categories you can only make quick and easy to consume snapshots and throw up some stars (based on ???) and that will be it. Not good enough considering they encourage you to pay up and interested buyers should be aware of interests.

As an example of the intend you will notice plenty of links to http://www.hermanstr....com/store/index.php when you click "Buy" and information pages - and they of course link back to Toptenreviews Does not really give trusty impression. Or the many affiliates references in other "Buy" links. Nothing wrong with that but in this case (review/promotion bundle!) you cant be sure they dont favor best deals (for them!) because review is more like a description than actual test of product. They claim something else but if that was the case they would need 10 people to review on a daily basis. More or less one big advertisement but sure there are some easy to consume information value under the "Buy" links  8)

There is a bit more to me not digging Topten stuff, details comes flashing. Like taking programs on and off list as they please (again I would think that has to do with money/deals) I leave it up to Google and perhaps http://www.dslreport...k,11654960~mode=flat There was also a story about Topten refusing to test S&D and yet testing a program which S&D author claimed used his code (see rogue list http://www.spywarewa...gue_anti-spyware.htm but I expect Topten to have taken that progam down by now - Im too lazy to google story but I remember it clearly so available somewhere and it is not the only one as you can guess from a site hosting a shady spy-scanner!) You can floor Topten easy, marketing dont strike back, just move on to new adventures and consumers.

Not nice at all though Ive mainly looked at AV "reviews" and that was 1 year ago. Reviews are obviously poor and quickly made but many of the "Buy" links showed (shows?) why they dont care for freeware. Affiliates deals is why... Nice idea if you are into internet marketing - anyone who know forums like this and similar places can spot the intend in 2 seconds but Ive seen "Toptenreviews" mentioned many times as a buying guidance, here and there you see it. Setup is working, if not for actual buying then as taking part of the "which is best or get most stars on some site" show you see, in ads for example 8)

Any review shaped as Toptenreviews where author dont feel like stating details like name is most likely "screwed". http://www.toptenrev...ws.com/about-us.html Faked ambitions/BS in the year 2006  8)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Flock - the Social Browser (beta)
« on: July 19, 2006, 02:36 PM »
Latest beta 0.7.3 from today should support most Firefox extensions, not a major problem.

Here is a very good screencast of main Flock features http://screencastson...les/category-14.html it really is better than Firefox if you have the need.

And a podcast with founders http://www.talkcrunc...w-with-the-founders/ These "web 2.0" guys sure dont mind speaking of revenue and expected $$ per user. Or keeping quiet about other things - as one do in business world. Opensource and money dont exclude each other should there be doubts  8) Talkcrunch is a sub-site of TechCrunch which keeps eye on new web 2 sites, investments etc. http://www.techcrunch.com/
