I know Placescleaner work inside browser but not sure about CCleaner. Perhaps best to take notice of Tuxmans concern and close Firefox before "cleaning". Those sqlite files can get corrupted and unless you know someone capable of editing only fix is to delete.

Force Google to behave, GoogleMonkeyR http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9310 autoload as many columns as there is room for. More crap but also more usuable hits. And make avanced search page default. Can complain about that too but a whole different setup and experience than what majority use and what encourage spamming/"copywriting"-theft/keyword-mania/aggressive SEO. Top 10, Top 20, Top 30 lists are dead. Possible Google match of your personal profile vs hits improve situaton a bit but check out 2-300 hits and not just top whatever. All evil is focused on just that as are Google keyword tools and every SEO tool you can buy ;)

I was thinking the same, just about a 3rd party program trying to jump on the wagon build by this blog entry http://blog.mozilla....firefox-with-vacuum/ Actually one before that but this shows that Placescleaner and few others do work within browser, and automatically. Also have an eye for other parameters like visited sites. Dumping those not really useful to keep. Number of days to save history should be lowered inside options of course. 90 is deault? May be 10 is ok too ;) I have tried Placescleaner, work as advertised - but I think you will see this in most "cleaner/tweakers" not just CCleaner. There is another one I can't remember name of.

May be dreaming but I think I have heard something about this getting into Firefox 4, also checking of "corruption". Could be 3.7 if that even exist. I am confused about their release schedule. Pretty sure they are aware of this though. Blog entry is from a Mozilla dude... Until then there is much traffic to gain by using magical keywords, Firefox, boost, tweak ;)

No button at all must be fantastic then http://code.google.com/p/placescleaner/

Speedyfox does the same as other Firefox tweaking programs.

If you use CCleaner this compacting has been added. Don't know when but it is there now. Works on all sqlite files.

357
Heard about official winners of the moment? "Extend Firefox 3.5 Winners" should be here and a special contest for mobile use.

358
I think it is a minority who are concerned. More might get annoyed about toolbars or strange redirections in browser but will they know where it came from? Probably not even aware most can be uninstalled with no side effect to main program. Don't think you should be worried for lack of offers.

Sometimes it does help though. Like with Digsby. Only took 1+ year for Lifehacker and such popular sites to figure out details. Up to the "gone evil" complaints they were all for Digsby. There were hardly any mention of the truly clean "alternative download" link. Real one was not transparent and full of junk and fixed settings - for the not so aware at least. So don't trust review/tech sites either  8) Really a user/personal task to weed out crap. Or get used to it. I do use Digsby but no way I have much faith in developers approach to users. They did not end with complex bundling (worst ever?) but had it ready right from the start. There were not even a donation button on their site. Only reason they changed mind was because they got so much exposure on for example Lifehacker. Check their extremly late "discovery" here http://lifehacker.co...our-pc-to-make-money vs. their victory 1 month later http://lifehacker.co...ome-bundled-crapware Great effort unless you search for "digsby"  8)

359
One of the cool things about Googles toolbar is you can move buttons separately. So move useful buttons to navigation or menu toolbar and forget about the rest. I only know Webdeveloper Toolbar which is made that way. Even has a toggle button. Most are fixed and so you get toolbar hate  8) There are ways to toggle them on/off but then you need another extension.

If uninstall of Ask stuff is not enough reset preference in about:config http://kb.mozillazin...ions#Ask.com_Toolbar and more directly last post on this page http://forums.mozill...p?p=5069645#p5069645 A few antispyware tools will also remove but they might skip this footprint.

360
Much trust could be gained if developers/marketeers, small or huge, supplied information about what is installed. Changes to startup, shell, folders used, registry changes or whatever impact their stuff has. Not really that hard to throw in if modern website tool is used. Then Total Install or other monitoring program would be waste of time.

361
I was more hinting your cause is hopeless than you should uninstall anything  8) Just more of the same though obviously one of the more sneaky ones. I doubt Zonealarm offer Ask toolbar that way. Might even let you read privacy policy in a clear designed window. They know they will be hunted more forcefully if they really did install 3rd party software behind your back, not even FormatFactory does that. But they can increase chances of you messing up. Also if you try to find out who is making FormatFactory what do you come up with? They say your privacy is important to them but where is a real policy? And of course program comes from China. Almost anything but program itself is dubious. Since I seem to think they are out to screw people should I uninstall? I can do that or be extra careful since I expect the worst from pcfreetime. More annoyance and sign of the time$ than a threat to me I guess.

I did the same ooops with Sumo http://www.kcsoftwar...s.com/index.php?sumo when they started to bundle Relevant Knownledge. Just passed by me because I had done so many of those installation/updates. They got complaints and now offer RK free download - if you know where to look. Like CCleaner has a slim/lite version with no Yahoo bundle. Does not count for much I think. Majority do not have a clue and they get their stuff from Softpedia, Download.com, Brothersoft or where ever. Typically that means only fat version is available. RK a lot "worse" than a stupid toolbar last I checked. Notice how author try to excuse himself by refering to RK-free version http://kcsoftwares.c...viewtopic.php?id=244 You bundle or you don't. Here is more about RK http://www.ghacks.ne...-relevant-knowledge/ Google for more.

Well Zonealarm notified you of Ask install checker so that is something. If on Vista or better you could try Windows 7 Firewall Control http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/ - about all freeware version does is to pop up when whatever is trying to send out. Is more of a GUI to build-in firewall - which is full featured but can be annoying to use. I read you can use Firewall control to set up rules for all your installed programs - then uninstall it and Windows firewall will take over those rules. Only have this bookmarked about Windows Firewall http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=239750 but search for more at that place if interested in avoiding 3rd party firewall. I am sure there is a guide on how-to, I considered doing it at some point. Possible mentioned in that thread, look for a guy called "Kees1958". Think he could be inventor of this trick. Many paranoid people there are perfectly happy with build-in firewall so not necessarily a step back unless you do some real high-risk computing.

362
Well your message will not get through as long as enough users are not aware of this. So solution is to increase awareness. Research, which is more than clicking away at careless download sites. Treat downloads/installation like ads, be sceptical and watch out for surprises.

You are already using software from companies using same tactic  8) Say goodbye to your firewall...

ZoneAlarm - SpyBlocker (Ask Toolbar) (This toolbar is detected as spyware/adware by several vendors)

363
Well you can fight back by warning and avoid recommending but you could also fight the battle of making 3rd party injections better or more in sync with the "average" user. I have seen another way from Fotomix Now Adware/Freeware because crackers won or something 8) They put "Ads by Google" inside of program, like a sidebar. Not too intrusive and I think more honest. Ads are located inside program, not in browser or desktop/startmenu. That alone is a big difference. Uninstall program and all traces are gone. All about $$$ anyway and we all know Google so nothing new majority has not accepted already. As so many Site Admins appears to do they can always say "Sue Google" if you click and get redirected to something dubious.

Fun program for those with no graphics skills btw.

364
Here is another trick. Links to 3rd party crap inside of programs menu. Anvir Taskmanager Tools menu

2009-12-21_192007.png

Registry scan, Performance scan, Drivers update send you off to UniBlue website. There is more to Anvir than this but shows you are not necessarily "safe" by trusting ability to handle tickboxes. Matter of definition what is a threat/adware/malware of course.

365
Actually there is nothing strange going on IainB. Not if you are aware opt-out has defeated opt-in as favoirte installation trick, as if there ever was any doubt. What you clicked past during installation look like this:

2009-12-20_040545.png

Only 5 tickboxes 8) Ask will still try to send a beep home regardless of choices but computer will not be "infected".

If they are guilty of something it is to make sure chances of you avoiding ask, ebay are best possible. Window pop up at end of installation, where you are in click, click mode already. ClamWin also uses Ask toolbar but at least made an effort in making it clear what was being offered. As preparation for protests. Ask demand toolbar must be pre-selected or there is no deal. FormatFactory could not care less, just stuffed tickboxes in one little window, or are deliberately trying to fool you.

Besides that program is great  :D

As you can see from this list "Installers Hall of Shame" you did not stumble over anything special. Those people don't even accept opt-in as an excuse, Avast is also listed. In other words they are special people on a crusade but list show bundle-mania is common.

I think I have seen mid-November as a goal, pretty sure october was first date missed. Check current situation at their beta forum http://forum.avast.c...index.php?board=15.0 I bet mid/late December. Remember it is brand new program so quite a few minor bugs. And behavior blocker not enabled yet. Main functionality seem stable. Some risk when testing of course but try it out if in the mood. You can install/uninstall MSE without reboot, think it also goes for Avast. Or search Youtube for "Avast 5" if curious about new look.

Will be interesting to see what Avast meant when they said version 5 was "compatible" with MSE  8) As a min. it must mean both can be installed (regardless of what MSE advice) - but only one resident towards filesystem. Why declare compatibility if program is not used? Perhaps finally some real use of all those modules and options in Avast. If MSE is resident then Network/webshield shield could work. I believe they have started with IP blocking now, always nice to have. Just Avasts bootscan will be nice addition to MSE. Will soon work on 64 bit, still some 32bit leftovers. There will be much testing going on once it is officially released.

grandpastan, I hope you mean Avast 5 and not MSE. Check beta-forum for possible solution to whatever problem is/was, can't remember any evil alpha bugs with this but who knows.

Well, except for approaching big files MSE does not seem to be consistent when doing pit stop. Most of the time it is transparent though or nobody would use it. Anyway, pic show some of the reasons why Avast feel/is lighter. Less will do but I had hoped control over resident scanning of archive files would be added in new beta. Not an easy one to ignore. Avast looks like a high tech wonder in comparison, even more options than in version 4. GUI will now sell Avast, not make people think Winamp. Should appeal members of computer forums. Need to check behavior blocker once it actually works but for now I think many will go Avast 5 once finished. Avira is annoying with updates/nags, AVG not all like/"recommend" - a little Norton story there perhaps. So important these 2 are available and foolproof in their own way.

Yeah more of the same but I still see massive cpu usage when dealing with many or big files, particulary archives. To a "not responding" level in Total Commander when really crazy. Too aggressive and makes me think of Avast 5 options of selecting resident action on each "packer" type, including self-extracting exe-files. Ok manual scan go after all files regardless it take a bit longer than Avast or whatever, but resident roller coaster feature is annoying. I also notice even when entering desktop from a boot. Slowly, slowly. With Avast and its temp + static cache there is no noticeable delays. I dont sense MSE is a tractor, just needs regular gasonlin instead of methanol. If someone from MS said yes that might be true but 1. We actually delete/repair files without notifying user so tool must check at all times and 2. Ever wondered how few notice this or even care? - I would probably see his point.

If interested in breaking MS distribution laws new beta can be downloaded here http://cid-afe12d66a...SE/1.0.1743.0%20beta I read it is sent off to OEM partners for final test so not much of an experiment. Can't see they have changed much about cpu usage in "resident" protection. How many notice is another question. If majority does not they probably don't care too much.

Now I am reconsidering free Macrium  8) I think I knew Vista did similar system backup, in thoughts when choosing Ultimate, but fact is somehow blurred because I usually disregard most MS feature not absolutely necessary for Windows to work. That way no annoyances, all stable and great. Feels better even, like less MS is a good thing, while using Windows... Guess stupid to ignore build-in backup now they offer it.

Important to check Linux based restore cd made by Macrium btw., not sure it is good friends with all hd-controllers or at least a ahci -> naitive sata trick is required.

371
I should know since on Vista but does build-in "Back up computer" not work? File level is lacking but total backup? Macrium is more cool though  8)

Well business/ultimate only http://www.microsoft...features/backup.aspx - have forgotten all those details.

You are wrong Mrs. If you turn down sensitivity level a tad you will see and get over it. Regardless, this thread is about firewall not your concerns for other members well being.

You failed with that effort  :D Why no one mention Privatefirewall? Is free for private and business use though not listed at such by Matousec site. http://www.privacywa...rsonal_firewall.html program as ugly as website, but I think only firewall I have tried where I did not notice it was running. HIPS stuff dont work with 64bit but some might just want a good old firewall.

I just tried this one last night. Pretty horrible compared to Macrium Reflect http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp I got an Acronis feeling about Paragon. Has more options though. 102mb+ vs. 30mb shows I guess. Reflect is quite a bit faster here but also do not check every file on hd to match exclusion options in Paragon, takes for ever. Functionality is pretty much the same for basic use - can't see why Paragon is better. File from Paragon was 23gb but Refelct one with less exclusions is 20gb. I used the one with *.tmp, *.old etc. Better compression I guess. May be why default is "high priority".

Also looked at free Acronis from Western Digital http://support.wdc.c...t/downloaddetail.asp only looked.

Paragon has a separate site dedicated to their free stuff btw. http://www.paragon-software.com/free/

AndyM - unless my memory has gotten worse then yes you can. Also in Reflect ;)
