Hmm, so now ad-bots are starting to make a handful of posts to become accepted? - and then they throw in the link? Or is johnmash an underpaid poor sod who try to make a living? Who can tell?

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Security Essentials

You might need to know about ESET uninstaller http://kb.eset.com/e...tent&id=SOLN2289 :)

But do evaluate beta of MSE 2 http://downloadsquad...s-more-improvements/ They have added more features but main difference is it seems to work much faster. If you or your task manager have any sense of cpu usage there is a risk your test of MSE 1 will be over in a flash. Many say MSE is the lightest and best ever, check almost any forum or even google, but I think that tells more about the crap some people used before than about MSE. MSE 2 is also not a rocket but more in sync with std. of current AVs.

If you are hysteric with scan times be sure you know settings, like dif. between all files and relevant files. I don't remember defaults but MSE is probably set up to scan everything, all files, all archives = long scan time. Now it has some sort of caching feature so it should not matter that much, except for initial scan. That is the theory but when I say beta is noticeable faster I mainly think of real time modules or what matters. Use exception options if speed is unacceptable, not much point in scanning 1TB of movies more than once for example.

Think it will be released early 2011. Microsoft has a forum for MSE but you wont see official reps. or new insights into anything, just MSVPs stumbling over each over to make answers "marked" as correct, heh. Worst forum feature! http://social.answer...rums/en/category/mse since you want to check things out before installing I guess you should say hello. General attitude is you use Microsoft products after the book. You do not need and should not use evil 3rd party programs :) If you have other security programs you like to use with MSE check info from them, not MS.

Defaults are still adjusted to grandma so most is automated. Version 2 is also better with fine tuning of what is scanned and how.

If you can settle for being able to log in to user account new Synergy project http://synergy-foss.org/ and Input Director http://www.inputdirector.com/ works. Must be set up correctly, for Synergy I think it is called "installed as a service", for Director http://www.inputdire...tor.com/faq.html#3_4

In case you don't know new Synergy try it out. No more stupid 100% left of middle config mess and has drag&drop setup of monitors, like in Input Director :) Under Edit, click Services for installation on both client and Server. Also under Edit click Settings and tick "Automatically start server or client when GUI starts". Then it should work. I use 1.4.1 beta for Windows.

The bad chip you have as suspect could be a capacitor http://en.wikipedia....iki/Capacitor_plague See under symptoms. Don't know if problem is always visible. Fujitsu is well known as is problem, may be a search for model name + capacitor give useful hits?

Found Deals and Discounts / Mamutu 65% off
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:52 PM »
http://www.softpedia...irewall/Mamutu.shtml seems almost like a permanent offer but who knows.

Worth considering if 1. Only use simple basic AV but have doubts if it is "enough", like considering Malwarebytes Pro or something. 2. Do not use anything at all because security software blows! - might want to have "something" though. 3. Might feel comforting if running as Adm. 24/7 with uac turned off, may be no AV even, just because you can. Some might demand that well knowing level of protection is poor. Not being stupid but having special needs, heh. Mamutu could be a solution.

I think most companies will soon start to promote rebates and such. Is it not around that xmas time? Well do not let saved $$$ break protest against traditional security stuff, get this instead.

More info from Emsisoft http://www.emsisoft..../en/software/mamutu/ but try trial which is fully functional. At first it works a bit like a firewall, asking questions about each process. This popping up in your face will go away as Mamutu gets the info required. Program is updated often with a whitelist so not really annoying to live with. Has a "paranoid" mode which definitely is.

Still a program which requires a certain amount of know-how but not much more than for example Winpatrol. Can also screw up making wrong decisions there. About the same level I think. Those 2 together is cool and easy 8)

Runs very smoothly with little resource usage, more cpu than ram (total of 4.6mb on my computer). Hardly any file activity since it does not scan, just monitor "behavior". No guarantees, try trial. Check forum, not like program has been flawless since day one. Just runs very nice here and price is ok I think. Should work alongside at least simple AVs. Not so sure about Kaspersky Suite and similar big packages.

Well it is the site/server that is doing something wrong but I am missing a joke saying that right?

Is it not the same ignorance of what Google bot picks up that feeds sites listing "private" webcams, photogalleries and such? If on the internet and not properly hidden Google will index you or something.

209
Keep an eye on how fast they react to your submission of a false positive - you did do that?

If they are as lazy as Mcafee http://billpstudios....-harm-winpatrol.html then let them know ;)

Living Room / Re: The conflict of interest that is Google
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:40 PM »
If you want to get really depressed consider the big GA. Google is so evil with all those extremely detailed data mining features to manipulate your way to the top. What feeds and encourage screwed up search results right? Who is using GA besides Google? Can you hear the silence? ;) or who is really bothered besides a handful on a few forums? Who take part of this conspiracy? Is there a single corrupted power we conveniently can point at, warn against, link to! - or have many joined forces? Well, focus is wrong when digging in to details about how Google test what can be done with a toolbar, dns-server or whatever. Breaks up ABC order. Fact is most of those producing content, responsible for content are in bed with Google and smiling. Fascinating but tiny issues showing Googles "real" motives for "not evil" claim might not even be true, then or at least today. Google have made many "mistakes", corrected many as well. Google notes was indexed per default when introduced. Personal notebook published to the world. What does it tell you about how they think? Buzz thingy in Gmail is another example. I would be surprised if they do not "test" the waters from time to time. They probably have many people hired with that job description. Don't be so surprised - if a web admin with GA, ads and all don't act so surprised. Goal justify the means.

Btw, when testing a google search result you do remember to do localized search for every region in the world? There is no generic result since long. Using account/personalized web history just make it less meaningful to refer to results. Also goes for those who feel ever so happy by using 3rd party proxy - conditions of search decide results. Google can say, hmm next week lets try to pimp X in Sweden. Quick, take a screenshot! Well correct and false. I think they are way ahead of "researchers" :)

Of course, those with knowledge and power wins Mouser. Anything new in that? How business world is. Majority are sheeps, have no insight in Googles 200+ services, probably don't care at all since Facebook is more interesting - you are right. Google are free to do whatever they want. Which is why situation could be a lot worse than someone taking a screenshot as "proof" of anything. How would Google develop if Microsoft bought them?

Exactly but how can anyone believe that? It is so strange to see people get sad now Google has become evil! They have always been evil. They are a business operating in the same environment as Microsoft etc. They just do it with more transparency (yes) and well better :) They speak to YOU right? You feel Google is there to help you. Now you are disappointed, have lost a friend. They are good, heh.

God, it seems like some of you got internet access yesterday! The whole "system is fake with correct/impossible standards. Every heard of SEO? What you want is correct results based on who has the most effective SEO. So SEO is the truth then?

This about Google pimping own stuff has been an "issue" since forever. I remember Picasa and perhaps Picasa Web creating some debate years ago. Like when you searched for image/picture stuff it suddenly appeared on top. If this is considered a problem I think Google can screw everyone over and over without anyone noticing. They just need to make a "GUI" no one gets upset about. Then Google rocks!!!

Also I think best way to know their mindset is not reading prepared blogs/articles trying to make a fuss but seeing beast in the eyes. So Codetrucker, say hello to Google Analytics team blog, their twitter, install GA, check help pages and forums. Start using the tool. If you want to know Google that is a good way to start, many other offerings are biproducts of GA  - they would not exist without. But that is part of the evil scheme of course :)

When done - start placing Google in the big picture, you know all the other companies directing your internet activities. What is left to warn about?

Very nice but check comments on his site. I used the old version without noticeable disasters but then he posted that it will NEVER work on 64 bit Windows, needed a complete rewrite. This is the one but unless he changed info on site last few hours there is still no clear mention of 64bit problems/fixes. May be I misunderstand how it works but I think I was asking for trouble using old version on 64bit. I blame him a litte too ;) Many use it so all problems will be highlighted, in comments at least.

True about ssds 4wd. New stuff and it will get better, cheaper etc. Well may be worth to check pricing scheme, like you get sooo much more if you spend an extra XX$ or something. Apparently picky to choose so more than price to consider. In his shoes I would want Windows, Adobe and what Adobe work requires on this ssd. If 40gb is great for that then 40 is enough.

I know someone who got Windows 7 and now has to run Autodesk in a VM because it will not work with 7! Too costly to upgrade old Autodesk version. Incompatibility problems are for real but if no 32bit requirements save money by going 64bit System Builder - which is what you are anyway :)

I mean this ram upgrade will be the last - most likely also last one involving DDR2. So choosing 2gb modules "for future" is just too much logic :)

If you see the point of not wasting money on Retail Windows may be ask those who know about SSD hds about other options, I mean larger. 40gb seems too small for me. With Windows, Adobe stuff, you being developer - don't you think you could use twice that? I don't know benefits of SSD other than what I have read but something to focus on perhaps. Fast bootup and Windows is nice but you also what lightning fast Adobe and whatever you use. 40gb is enough today but what about the future  :P

Living Room / Re: build/upgrade or buy/build a new one?
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:31 AM »
Well in a crystal ball I can see there will not be any loss later because you will not expand further. The more you spend now the higher "loss" if you will. In future you will change to something else, you already did 1 "expansion" and either your self or media/other people will encourage change as well. So new motherboard, new ram, new cpu and "old" computer becomes no. 2 or is sold. I give you 10% chance for expanding on 2x2gb DDR2. Cost of DDR2 might increase as well, most likely will. Industry punish those who want to buy "old" items. They have no interest in letting you use old hardware with ease.

But besides that see if you can't get confirmation new modules work in your particular motherboard. Ram problems can be hard to fix and probably the only thing that can go wrong with your expansion so check this. Why I said you should be happy G.skill have identical package available today, was not because 4x1gb is better though I think it make more economic sense if tech crystal ball is correct about future. Both Windows and Linux OS have ram tester software build-in so very important. As long as ram works you can get 4x4gb, the more the better :)

Was that Windows you picked not a retail with both 32 and 64bit versions? Of course you should go 64bit today. May be they have better deals like 4wd has been looking for. I would get 64bit OEM for System Builder version for sure, http://www.newegg.co...ft-Operating-Systems Pro or Ultimate I am not sure of. I you want HOME it is 100$ http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16832116754 There are no problems with moving that Windows to new computer, is not locked to anything = you get absolutely no value for paying "Retail" full price. Some still think OEM means it is illegal/impossible to move Windows and so will warn against much cheaper versions. I stumble across such statements on Windows forums. Have you heard that? Is BS :) "System Builder" status is what makes it ok and difference to tinkering with a OEM Windows provided by Asus, HP or whatever. Not legal since license is locked to hardware.

Yes but if he has to sell old modules with a loss it might be a better deal to get 2x1gb. When the time for more comes it will most likely be DDR3 since new motherboard with usb3 and other "must-haves" requires that. Expansion plans require some determination, most with money to spend will not stick to them :)

You can always overclock cpu or at least keep that in mind should you start to focus on cpu power. If you keep it at safe levels where std. cooler is good enough there is no risk or loss of stability. Not if you do it after the book = happy with easy extra mhz, how much would that be for your cpu when it runs at default voltage?. Do not care much for the last difficult and instable mhz, those will be troublemakers. Check for example http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/ or just google "core 2 duo e6550 overclock". Seek sane info among the noise ;) Works best if you like the idea, enjoy tinkering/tweaking and doing necessary research. If clueless about bios vs. overclock you should research a bit but not more painful than paying 100$ for 40gb ;) Bios or software might have some auto-overclocking but I don't know about those modern tricks. To do it manually you must know what you are doing but not really difficult if you have relevant valid info.

Newegg still has same G.Skill package of your ram http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16820231144 so no worries about getting incompatible items. Don't think 4x1gb vs. 2x2gb means anything. In old days it could mean something if you overclocked ram since not all chipsets were that happy about 4 modules, less was better. Old days being few years but unlikely to be worth a thought for you. Be happy you can make an easy and foolproof ram upgrade. You could check G.skill forum, Google or the 544 reviews at Newegg but they do use same model number today, F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK, so should be safe to assume chip is identical.

Sure you are if it makes you feel safer. But if you are also satisfied with their installation process you have gotten used to too much ;) Avast sucks a bit as well because of web-shield which they should keep for "Pro"/paid versions, web-shield is the one component which can cause problems. Installation pretty clean with or without. AVG is just worse in every way.

Ubuntu Tweak http://ubuntu-tweak.com/ is nice and necessary to fix stupid default settings like titlebar buttons at left and other annoyances of Ubuntu. Must have for those without deeper knowledge of command-line.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

These questions will become more relevant with paid extensions, also for for Mozilla since they provide the "OS". The guy with url-fixer has a name to protect and polish so he will not have any interest in dumping support. Other developers you might only know from an email addy could have other motives. If shop must be safe for buyers content can only come from approved elite developers who has an interest in using Mozillas name for own purposes.

Not like Mozilla does not help developers already. Shop is only about $$$, the exciting math - imagine 1$ per Adblock Plus download or 10$ a year per subscriptioin to Filter list! From a commercial view point what are they waiting for?

Mozilla should copy Wordpress/Automattic. They encourage monetizing Wordpress, there are "commercial" advertisements at wordpress.org, but wisely stay out of that loop :) Others can do what they want as long as licensing is not broken. Another issue for Mozilla shop I think. Really difficult to see how Mozilla can avoid getting in trouble. They have no history of being able to make clear politics regarding add-on site so in case of problems they will just go hmmmm for months and months.

ScribeFire made by Finke almost screams for a Pro version. Must be very easy to make a limited free one. Unique extension, not much more than Windows Live Writer as alternative. I don't think he understands marketplace if he believe url fixer is a good product. May be also why attempts to insert ads via Scribefire failed ;) People did not seem to like such monetary tactics - and now some don't like he throws in other extension as free "extra". Just because he is a good developer does not mean he is good at making money - but his problem.

223
AVG does not know how to survive in the world of Avast and MSE, both close to foolproof with regards to installation. If they do survive it will be because too many know too little.

Yes much good to say about Minecraft. I have seen enough of streamed gaming to know game is either a severe addiction or something to avoid at all costs because there are only 24 hours per day.

I am guessing you have heard this podcast with Notch http://www.indiegame...odcast_2_minecr.html Where he explain trip to Steam HQ or not explain ;) "They just wanted to get to know me, I think" or something. Yeah yeah. He seems like a nice guy, spend money on making company though he has enough to just fade away and be a rich asshole for some years ;)

Oh, you linked to same podcast - well good intro so no harm in double linking.

Yes, he is making own company but have also said that he hopefully got a foot in the door. According to JTV gamers ;) He probably refer to selling the game not them taking over though. But who knows. If he suck at getting company running, server mess becomes worse, no time for updating (what gamers complain about) he know who has shown interest. Still only alpha status.
