Living Room / Re: Gadget WEEKENDS
« on: July 01, 2013, 02:01 AM »
Bought this last weekend and have been pretty happy with it. Probably great for someone busy with work / lazy at home. It removes the need to flip eggs sing a spatula and makes life so much easier.  :-*

Good for cooking simple/filled/egg white omelette, or just fried eggs, two at once.

The unit does not have an on/off switch so if you use it on a timer switch, guess what, the process can be fully automated... put everything in the cooking wells, schedule the timer for start/stop times in the morning and you wake up with fresh, hot omelettes cooked just on time!

Bought this milk frother and heater over the weekend and has been loving it so far.

Milk is now heated evenly to a precise temperature on demand, and is extremely easy and quick to clean.

http://www.brevilleu...a.com/milk-cafe.html

BMF600_Hero_110316.jpg

Copied from my FB post:

Winter is here! I have decided that a cup of warm flavoured milk might become a more regular part of my repertoire this winter, while trying to snooze on bed till the last minute... Therefore sharing this idea/recipe/appliance from my neighbour Ophelia... Until I paid a visit to her kitchen I was still struggling to make the perfectly heated/frothed drinks this winter! I know my kitchen is basically a Breville showroom but this one really deserves extra commendation!

It is very user-friendly for coffee-making beginners, and for me... tons of great non-coffee drinks. So far I've tried to froth normal milk, rice milk, and soy milk with it, with great results.

The machine whirs away like mad until the milk reaches the desired set temperature and a nice cap of foam has formed.. and add pureed fruit / jam / chocolate you get perfectly heated, frothed, and evenly flavoured milk.

It amazes me how kitchen automation has evolved over the years, now you seem to be able to get an appliance for any specific purpose... all we need is a kitchen the size of a studio apartment right? ;)

Replaced my shower head with this two weeks ago and have been VERY happy with it. It really makes shower enjoyable, even doing it together with your special half. Be warned that it's no longer possible to get back to your tiny traditional shower head after this!

LED colour changes based on water temperature so you can tell when it's ready without getting urself wet.

Bought from this link but obviously there are a lot of suppliers on ebay/aliexpress that sell this:

Time to post another kitchen gadget!

http://www.breville.com.au/waffle-creations.html

From the manufacturer's site:
The crispy outside and soft inside texture of a waffle topped with maple syrup, cream or strawberries is a beautiful way to start or end the day. Breville's Waffle Creations™ makes 6 heart-shaped waffles, the traditional waffle shape of Scandinavia.
Perfect for a weekend family breakfast or brunch, Breville's Waffle Creations™ bakes waffles in just minutes. Made with heat-proof handles and a non-stick cooking plate for a no-mess clean-up it's both safe and easy to use.

mouser's been tirelessly hassling me to post a gadget so here goes one... ;)

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/160900777168

Luvelo Elite Yoghurt Maker

Got this last week after my mom told me that my grandma's been very happy with her homemade yogurts using a yogurt maker. It's actually quite simple to follow the recipes and make your own yogurt with this machine. All the ingredients you need are some existing yogurt, milk, and milk powder... basically sterilised the milk, stir the powder and yogurt in a bowl and pour into the containers, then set the timer to 10-12 hours and that's it! The machine will automatically maintain the temperature most suitable for the yogurt cultures to grow.

The machine comes with 14 jars and can accommodate 7 jars at a time so you can make the second batch while enjoying the first one.

Bought this sensor bin last week following mouser's recommendation:

Holding capacity of 42L which is a good sized rubbish bin to have. Sensor distance of 5-15cm from the sensor window, the cover of the rubbish bin automatically opens within half a second when rubbish is put within range of the sensor window. The indicator light will turn green when the lid automatically opens and then turns red when the lid closes automatically. The cover closes automatically after the rubbish has been thrown into the rubbish bin.

There is a button on the right hand side for you to press, if you'd rather open the rubbish bin yourself.

My gadget of this week, an electric frying pan, from my fav manufacturer Breville:

bef500.jpg

I've had it for a week now and must say I've been fairly impressed with its ease of cleaning and build quality. It was recommended to me by a friend, a sea food lover (too!), who steams/fries a lot with it. The cooking surface is complete 18/10 stainless steel and thus is fairly easy to clean and is dishwasher safe. The box comes with a steaming rack and a recipe book/manual.

I bought this amazing car tablet mount about 3 months ago and together with an Asus Transformer Prime tablet they make the most powerful infotainment system I have ever seen/used... I have been requested by a growing number of friends to assist getting this mount to work on their cars so I figure I might as well share it here.

The holder gives you a very secure yet low profile mounting option, making a tablet easily accessible from driver's location without obstructing vision for the road. Connecting the tablet to your onboard bluetooth system or AUX port with one of these is easy as ABC:
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8Z492TTP-Bluetooth-Music-Receiver/dp/B0047T79VS

The mount can be bought here or from ebay:

Not a photo of my car/mount, just an image from amazon taken by one of the actual buyers.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: iPad 3 and me
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:19 PM »
A retraction.  A few days ago I said:

I've played with iPads and there is no question that they beat any Android tablet hands down when it comes to responsiveness.

Today, I received my Nexus 7 tablet from Google and I have to withdraw that statement.  This thing is every bit as responsive as any iPad I've ever played with, and at 1280x800 on a 7" screen, it looks just about as sharp.

I don't know how much of this is due to the hardware and how much is Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), but I'd have to say this is the first device I've tried that gives up nothing to the iPad and has all the advantages of Android.

Great to hear!!

It's the power.  It doesn't seem like Apple will ever allow the power that pc users are used to.  They really are meant for a different crowd.  A far dumber crowd when it comes to computers.

True to an extent. However I don't think it's really got anything to do with intelligence in anyway. The mac cult is generally higher income earners for the reason that, IMHO, the more you earn the more expensive it becomes to use your free hours to hack/tweak here and there. It makes more sense to pay more upfront for the solutions that just work and save much more time/efforts later on, even at the cost of having less functionalities in a few cases. It often is a quality of life, not technical, decision.

Take for example, a purchase of a new PC, there're so many choices/combos out there that it becomes mind-boggling to select/build one. By the time that you racked your nerve and made a decision, you probably already lost the value of the PC that you're gone purchase (taken into view the time x after-hours hourly rate you spent on it). And that doesn't even include the efforts that you have to commit after buying the PC.

There're enthusiasts in PS3 communities who want to have OtherOS feature to turn PS3 into a more dedicated media player/server, like the WD TV.

phitsc welcome to the apple club :D

I use a number of apps listed above by nosh. One, in particular, that i highly recommend is AirVideo... in addition to streaming videos *from* your Mac/PC to your iPad, the recents version can also stream the output *to* any Apple TV that connects to the TV.

Deo: you best bet is to get one of those jailbreak dongles (such as the E3 Flasher that I have, costs $20) and upgrade the PS3 to 3.55 then jailbreak.

You will have blu-ray and tons of additional features (via third-party apps) including OtherOS.

There're a lot of dongle dealers on psx-scene.com.

Living Room / Re: NAS Recommendations?

For anyone live in Australia, a great deal has come up from Harris Technology and is available till March 1 AEST:

http://www.ht.com.au...AS-server/detail.hts

Please note this is the upgraded v2 from the original RND4000, essentially the same unit as the one listed on Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.co...330514497&sr=8-1

For AUD $248 this is a steal. And one additional big plus for this unit is it supports 3TB drives! So you can have a 12TB NAS for just $248, WTF!

Just ordered it myself from the link above, and it will be my ninth 8TB-12TB NAS appliance. I'm not affiliated with any of the above companies above, just wanna share this great deal.

Not too certain about FAA rules but it's probably a US thing.
-lotusrootstarch (February 11, 2012, 08:17 PM)

Yeah. Sorry. I forgot who I was talking to. For some reason I was thinking you were from the USA.

That said, these iPads are to be used for the USA military, in which case 40hz may have had a point:

Unfortunately, the FAA will not allow them to be switched on while the plane is in the air for fear they may interfere with aircraft's flight instruments. hahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!  :P

This is just dumb. Like prohibiting mobile phone usage in the gas station, as if it'd rly trigger an explosion.

That's what "Airplane Mode" is for. ;)
-lotusrootstarch (February 11, 2012, 05:51 AM)

Have you been on an airplane recently? Every flight I've been on in the past few years I've been instructed to turn the devices off completely "even if the device has an airplane mode."

Yes, just a few months ago on a domestic flight, and I take international flights annually. Not only have I never been asked to turn off ANY electronic device (either with or without a flight mode option), actually the use of flight-mode enabled devices is explicitly permitted and instructed during the pre-flight broadcast.

I use mobile phone for music, tablet for browsing/reading, laptop for movie playback during all time of the flight except for during takeoff and landing, there's no chance that a crew member could tell me to switch any of them off (except for during takeoff and landing) without a resulting in a compliant from me. :)

Not too certain about FAA rules but it's probably a US thing.
