DonationCoder.com Software / Finished Programs / SOLVED: webcam activity detection

I had an idea that would sort of add on to the functionality of the Noise program. The idea is to tie in to a webcam via usb (or ip?) and have it keep the screen active so that the screensaver doesn't start up when there is movement or if the screensaver is running, it would stop when a user enters the area. It would be useful to have a grid that is selectable so that you can easily ignore parts of the webcam area that are expected to be in motion or don't matter. (ie If there's a window in the viewing area) Also, adjustable sensitivity.....

I thought about that..... and I don't think it will. I'm thinking (hoping) that even subtle changes on LCDs are enough to keep them from getting burned in. I'm hoping that having a white line get replaced by a gray line would refresh the pixels on the screen just enough to keep it from getting stuck. Unfortunately, to find out, the test takes a long time to run. It usually takes 3-6 months before you see any real effect.

Thanks for tackling this for me! It's a good start! Multi-monitor capability is a must for me because all of the computers here are 2+ monitor configurations. I think the inverse band is pretty good, but it's moving too fast on my system and is really choppy. Is there a way to modify the speed and width of it? Also, if there could be a way to dim the screen such as in the dimsaver screensaver (allowing realtime updates), I think that might be just as good as doing a whole shot and inverting it. As far as how realtime the data must be.... I would be okay with less than 2-5 seconds of delay.

I mentioned this idea a while ago in another part of the forum, but am wondering if I put it in the wrong section.
The idea is to have a screensaver that refreshes the pixels on the screen but keeps updating the current data on the screen. The DimScreen screensaver does this when the screen is dimmed. It continues to update information on the screen until the selected screensaver kicks in (which I can tell it to do after three hours). But that's only half of what I want.....
Could a new program be made (or a version update to DimScreen) that dims the screen (or not), continuously updates information displayed on the screen, and moves some pixels around to keep them from getting stuck? I think an inverse vertical line of 1-10 pixels could move from left to right would do the trick, or maybe bouncing bubbles like the screensaver in vista and win7.
I know some people say that LCD monitors don't suffer from burn in, but I see it happen all the time. I work at a water/wastewater treatment plant and the screens have to be on 24x7 and they display the same header and footer on the screen for months at a time, which get stuck in place even on the best of monitors.
If someone could help me out with this, that would be great. Thanks. :)

Just visiting this site again and noticed that the dimsaver.scr program sort of does what I'm looking for. It dims the screen, while still allowing updates through and then runs another screensaver after an amount of time. I can set the timeout to 3-4 hours and dim the screen to 200 and it might be alright. Is it possible to add a moving object to the dim saver? How about a 10 pixel inverse vertical line 100% screen height that moves left to right during the dim state?

That's an even better idea than I had thought of. Maybe have a 50 pixel inverse-color square scroll around the screen to freshen things up a bit. It probably wouldn't even need a timeout. Something that small could always be running with no interference to the operator.

Wow, I'm surprised how fast you guys replied! My application is full-screen only, so moving a window is not an option. Perhaps doing a screen shot every 5-10 seconds and shrinking it by 5-50 pixels and making the image move around on the screen? Very subtle, but may do the trick. Or even something like the Bubbles screensaver on Vista, but having the background continue to update...... The only problem with that is the corners would not be affected.

Where I work, we usually have the screens on the same information for very long periods of time. I used to think that screen burn-in was impossible on an LCD, but we have several monitors that have semi-permanent burn-in because of our needs. (to clear the burn-in, you have to unplug the monitor for a few days). Normally, you would just set a screensaver to turn on after a half-hour or something, but our needs demand that the information on the screens be visible at all times. I've seen some screensavers that take a snapshot of the screen and move that around or run swirling graphical somethings all around. That is a step in the right direction, but I need the information to continue to update itself at least every 5-10 seconds. I'm wondering if anyone wants to try to tackle this for me. At this point, I'm not exactly sure what such a screensaver would look like, but maybe someone else will have an idea. I'll be thinking about it a little more over the next few days and edit this post or reply if I think of something.
Thanks.

Just downloaded the new update (1.19.62) and it seems to be working fine with the multiple profiles. I've been swamped at work the last few weeks and am sorry I haven't gotten to that donation yet. I will try to have it to you by next week.
Also, a note about the gridmove.exe.ini path, on Vista and Server 2008, the path is "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\GridMove\", or "%AppData%\DomationCoder\GridMove\".

I love the concept of GridMove, seems to work good and I have a suggestion that would pretty much guarantee I would use it permanently. There needs to be a way to tie it to different profiles. I use terminal services at work and some users have one screen, some have two or three screens. Each of the users should be able to change the settings in gridmove to their own preference. But the way it is now, if one user changes settings, everyone else gets hosed. I think the ini file should just be moved from the program files directory into each user's application settings directory and it would take care of it.
