I think you can go to Control Panel, right-click on the wireless network connection (that you want to open with one click).  Choose 'Create Shortcut'.  Then, move that shortcut to the desktop.

That should do it.

Finished Programs / Re: Move to Parent
« on: December 16, 2010, 03:17 AM »
Hi All,

I'd be interested if anyone else has given it a go, to see if anyone else is having the same issues as nkormanik ??

I can't get it to 'not' work. i.e.  I CAN selected multiple files and it will move them to the parent, I CAN select multiple folders and move them to the parent.
Also, the context menu is option is coming up on all file types for me (including PDF's).

nkormanik, are you sure you do not have files or folders already open (including subfolders) of those you are trying to move?  Windows won't allow you to move them if open.  Perhaps thats why you're getting the issue?

Cheers

J.

Strange, you should be able to highlight multiple files or folders, right click and it will remove all selected files or folders (you can't mix files AND folders, you have to do files and folders seperately).

As for why it didn't move the PDF? Odd, it shouldn't treat a pdf any different to any other file.  Are yopu sure you didn't have the pdf file open at the time?  You can't move a file that is currently open.

I'll put some error checking round it, and perhaps a simple install and un-install....

Hi all

This seemed to be going on a bit, so I would like to stick in my 2 pen'nth worth.  Just a small little executable, stick it somewhere on your pc, set the path correctly in the .reg file. And, well, it should work...  It works for me...

If the 'install' is a little overcomplicated, let me know and I'll do a quick instal script.  Didn't think it would be worth it for an executable thats about 20k in size!

Let me know if it works...

Ok, think I have found the issue...  I'm off hone in a few mins, and am not in work tomorrow.  I'll try and sort out later tomorrow or the following day.

31
currently it only ran the 1st prog i added;

i added 3 to top and bottom box

it does not re-run that first prog after i move my mouse/press a key

when it initially runs the screensaver it displays a black rectangular box (background black w/ white text 'Idle')

this does not disappear after i move my mouse

Hmm, it runs all the programs for me (not just the first one).  Have you tried highlighting the program thats not working in the list and clicking 'Test' to see if it runs ok?

I changed the sensitivity of the mouse.

The idea of the little box coming up is to simply tell you that the pc is idle, (and helps detecting Mouse Movement!)

Try this newer version.

32
Ok, just as an experiment, move the mouse a bit slower....

let me knwo what happens..

33
Ok, try this for starters.

Just click run the executable and answer the questions to it installing the screensaver, and to setting as default.

Once installed, you'll be able to go to 'Diplay Properties' on the desktop and go to 'settings' in the Screensaver TAB to add/remove programs to run.

Set your screensaver time, and hopefully this should then run at that point.  Also, running all the programs in the top half of the settings.

once it comes out of 'Idleness', i.e. a key is pressed or a mouse oved then the programs on the bottom are run (I think this was what you needed).

If it all works I'll tidy up and create a little help file.

Sorry, I meant 'Spinning' ahead..

So, this program above you would run as the screen saver.  Then, to this program itself, you can set a number of programs to run when this is activated (i.e. the screensaver starts) and also run applications when this program terminates (i.e. the screen saver ends, for example moving the mouse). I think this is what you were originally asking for?  As you can see, you can add as many programs as you like to this to run at those points.

If this IS what you want, let me know and I'll carry on.

Thanks

35
Before I go sinning ahead too much, this is what I've done so far:

36
I can create you a program you run as a screensaver, that will allow you to run multiple applications  So, your registery setting will run this program, which in turn can run as many other programs as you like?

Make sense?

37
Why not have a screensaver program (that is activated by the registery key you change) that will run as many programs as you like when it activates, and then gives you the option to run programs when it ends (i.e. when the program comes out of idleness?  You can have as many programs you want run then, and won't need to update the registery.

Would this be better?

38
Let me see if I understand...

You currently run a program (in place of a screensaver) that activates (when the screen saver normally would).  This program (it seems) simply hides the taskbar?

What you would like to do, is for the above to continue, BUT, when the computer comes out of 'idleness', i.e. someone shakes the mouse or presses a key etc, you would then like 'another' program to run?

Is this correct?

Can you tell me exactly what registery entry you have set to activate the hide taskbar program?

Thanks

39
bunsack

Do you use a screensaver? One possibility is to use the parameter sent by Windows to the default screensaver and run a program when that happens (i.e. that occurs when the computer goes idle, and when it comes out of idle state).  Thats easy enough to do, but you would sacrifice having a different screensaver...?

40
You're right... I mis-read... ignore me!

Hi Stephen

I'm not sure how workable this is anyway, calculating how many words a person types a minute, is not a good gauge as to how hard someone is working.  To me, getting the right result at the end is better.

When I do development work for people, I ensure a fixed cost for the work I do, with a target date. Then, it doesn't matter when I work or how often. So long as I 'deliver the goods' at the agreed time, to a agreed standard then I get paid.  If I run late, that's my fault. If I finish early, that's my advantage.

Logging how many times I twiddle the mouse or type code does not tell you how hard I am looking, I could be researching on line for two hours to write 10 mins worth of code.

Does that make sense?

Hi,

I can't seem to find anything that does what you specifically want to do.  Is it hard to write?  I don't think so.  I'm happy to give it a spin.  I won't be able to start until tomorrow night though (don't have a mic on my pc at work, so will have to wait until tomorrrow evening when I'm at home).

Out of interest, what do you plan to use it for?

Cheers

Miles

If you know exactly what you want and how it needs to work?  Then let me know the specifics and I'll see what I can try and put together for you, its obviously something you will find handy.

[q]Newer isn't always better...[/q]

I couldn't agree with you more....

But I think you are missing the whole point of this site, (well, the coding snacks at least...)  These are 'simple' little apps, written to other people's specifications in a short time.  They are not big commercial products, where there is a development and testing team bashing the software to bits to make sure it runs on this OS or on that OS....  Making sure it doesn't break because of this or because of that.  yes, of course the author will test to a degree, but I'm sure most if not all of the programmers would not have time once they have written a coding snack, to test it on 85, 98, NT4,. 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, ME, 7 (and whatever else I missed).  Chances are they are only running one of those OS's themselves.

If it didn't work on 98 for you, I would have suggested a simple message to this thread along the lines of:
"I have tried this program on Windows 98, and currently it does not work because................."

They may then give the auther the oppurtunity to then look into the issue, and perhaps create you a version that does run on 98.

Cheers

Apologies for my spelling on the previous message!  I hadn't read thorough it.....  I'm not normally that bad!

Try this:

Hi Rekrul,

You make a fairly valid point, but how far back are you expecting this software to work for?  You said it was 'universally understood' that if a program did not list its requirements then it would work on 'all' versions... All versions??  What, way back to version 1?
If you are going to try and run a piece of software that was written in the last year or so, it clearly was not written to run on a pc running an 11 year old OS.  One would assume it runs on the 'current' populous, with all the latest updates.  That to me would be the assumption (but not necessarily correct).  But to assume it will work on 'all versions of Windows' I think it wrong.

As a software developer it's neither cost effective nor sometimes even technically possible to write software that works on XP, for example and also runs on 98.  They are simply too different.

Cheers.

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Program Idea Suggestion Thread
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:49 AM »
Hi all,

I posted this on a different thread.....

Evening all.....

I'm happy to participate... But my brain is a bit empty on ideas.....

If there is anyone out there, who might have a good idea, unique, one that is useful and would be popular...  and would like to form a PARTNERSHIP and we'll create something together?  i.e. you come up with the idea(s) and I'll do the coding... Then I am up for that!

It'll be a partnership effort (assuming thats allowed????)

Probably best to PM me if anyone is interested???

And was (rightly) advised it's probably better on this thread....

That being the case, anyone with a good idea wanna saddle up?

As I said above, I'm open to any kind of suggestion.  I'm happy to write something for Windows, Linux or something cross platform (to a degree, depending what it does!)

Cheers

Hi

wow, that was fast. as you seem to be on a roll, i hope you don't mind me making another suggestion.  if SDRP is already running and minimised to the tray, double-clicking the shortcut would make it appear instead of launching a 2nd instance as it is doing now.

Thats done now.
