Does anyone know of a software (freeware or shareware) that can change the popup settings, appearance, etc. of the default XP tooltip popups?

General Software Discussion / Re: Super lite PIM? Address book?

Hrm it looks a little over the top for my uses, plus it was last updated in 1999, that's kinda scary :p

Well you can some thing made that will be buggy is that what you want it is very hard to get the exact program that you want.

You asked for speed easy entry, easy access to info etc

It is sound, read the reviews it is well made and doesn’t need updating for the sake of updating ,read who the people are who made this program and the reasons why they did.

How can you say it is over the top if you haven’t tried it.Are you scared to try it.

You have come on here asking for something and I,ve tried to help at least give it a go or are you not “techie“ enough to have a go

I am willing to answer any problems about the program to help you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Super lite PIM? Address book?
« on: May 08, 2008, 07:12 PM »
I'm an emergency / 911 dispatcher and several times during the day I need to very quickly transfer a call or look up a number or address while several things are going on at the same time.

Currently we've been using a number of loose papers filled with this kind of info, but as you can guess they very quickly get outdated, torn, lost, edited, scribbled on, etc. The built in address book on the phone system is extremely clunky with no search function whatsoever, so that's no help.

I've been daydreaming of a simple, yet extremely efficient application that can allow me to put all this info at my fingertips but so far all the PIM and Address book software I've been trying out are *way* too overpowered for what I'm looking for. I'm hoping if I list out the small wishlist I have that someone can point me in the right direction or just whip it up :P

If I could wave a magic wand I'd create something like FARR or nDroid but made to scan a couple files of info and return matching lines rather than various directories returning matching files.

For example I could hit a hotkey to start the program, start typing Smith and any line in the file that matches what I type would show up as I type (rather than a submit button).

I'd also need just an input text box that would allow me to copy paste info into it to add to the file of phone numbers, emails and whatever other misc info.

Extra credit would be a way to arrow key up and down the list of results and be able to hit a hotkey like alt-e to edit that line directly rather than having to manually go edit the overall file.

Extra extra credit would be if the program could convert urls and email addresses to links which would be displayed if that line matched the search query somehow.

Anyone know of a program that can do this that I can try out?

I wish I had better programming skills, this seems like something someone can make very quickly if they were so inclined :p

Can I suggest Yeahwrite.

www.wordplace.com

The addresss feature within yeahwrite has some of the requirements the you are after such as typing the first letters of a surname will bring you straight to that person/s . The up/down arrows will scroll through that persons address and you can enter/edit what you want.

All though it is a Word processor as such I think you will enjoy using it‘s features.
30 names are on immediate view as soon as you open the address book.
those 30 names have their Full Name--Work Phone--Work Ext--Home Phone--Company Name instantly available on that page.(or whatever you want to put under those headings)
Scroll down the page or enter the surnames first initials and it comes up with that name or those similar.
Hit enter on the name you want and use the up/down arrows and you can edit any part of the
Address to your hearts desire.
Add comments if you wish as well  .

Love to hear your response after you have tried this program as I think its the very thing you want.
It has a free lite version but I don’t know it’s limitations as the website is apparently down at present.
From memory the program is small enough to be downloaded onto a floppy disk.
Extremely fast loading up and one of its features is automatic saving of work done/entered.
Oops just about forgot TABBED address books which can be right there available with a click of the mouse.
Entries can be transferred easily from one tabbed address book to another.

The search/find feature will pick any thing that you want right through all the tabbed address books etc.
Either a part of the email nickname or even part of the isp’s name  very efficient

This is my second edit after reading your posts again.
I have espoused on the address book part of yeahwrite you will love the rest of the progams features as a copy and paste info .
Under the general tab you can copy and paste info.
It automatically saves info you paste under the headings of DATE DESCRIPTION TEXT again 30 entries are available for immediate viewing on opening the that tab. The text heading shows the 1st line of what you have saved the decription heading of that entry you can edit at a later date to suit your own needs
I think I have opened the Yeahwrite pasted-saved info closed again in under 4 seconds knowing that the info will be readily available the next time I open yeahwrite without having to look all over the place for it.

I’m back again for my third edit
If you use the address book in yeahwrite and under the companyname put reference to the data that you wish to locate such as Smith **** (****your reference) you will see a button at the bottom right of the page which says SORT click on that and it will bring the company name to the foremost heading allowing it to be accessed the way that you have described in your posting.

Now I realise how good yeahwrite is with its tab features.

You have an Address tab for addresses alone with the suname as the foremost entry Put all your info addresses, notes etc and under the company name put the surname and your ref.

Now have a second tab which you alter as above by changing the foremost entry via the sort button to the company namei.....it will bring the company name to the foremost heading allowing it to be accessed the way that you have described in your posting.

Now when you make a data entry in the first address tab you copy it to the second tab (it’s very easily done) five seconds at the most.

And another feature is the tab can be color coded to suit what you like so that one tab can be a light blue and the other a light green so that you will know in which tab you are in.

So you will have one  tab for surname reference and one tab for company name(your reference) for searching.

this will be the nearest that a program will get to your needs without someone writing one specifically.

 ENJOY

Hi

on today at
http://lifehacker.com/

XNeat Boosts "Save As" Options for Document Wrangling
Windows only: Free customization utility XNeat adds a few unique functions to the rich library of tweaking utilities, and some might become must-installs for Windows power-users. The most notable are the additions to the standard "Save As" dialog: an option to create a numbered "clone" file when you're about to save over an existing document (i.e. "Paper(1).doc"), and a time-stamping utility that adds numbered dates to filenames automatically. XNeat also lets you enable drag-and-drop taskbar re-ordering, giving you your preference of left-to-right app layout, and a full set of windows management tools, including transparency and system tray docking. XNeat is a free download for Windows XP and Vista only.

The two “save as“ add ons are handy maybe not quite you want.

Hi,
I suggest you download FileMenu Tools a freeware program
.http://www.lopesoft.com/en/index.html

install and run and go to Tasks on the left handside
Then to Actions and click on Add Command
This will add a menu to your right click menu called add command click on that add command where it appears in the right pane of the page
highlight the just named Add Command and look at the properties tab at the bottom left of the page where it says General click on the following and change accordingly
Action select... Run Program
Menu Text....Change to Insert Date
Description.....you can add something if you want to but insert date says it all
Icon..... if you know how to add an icon of your choice or just leave
Element Types......you can leave
Folders .....you can leave alone
Files .....you can leave alone
Extensions .... you can add the extensions for the programs that you have installed on your computer such as *txt,*doc,*pdf, etc that is up to you to do.
Only an element..... leave as no

Program Properties

Program to run........ well this I will leave up to you to ask someone here to write a script for you to download that will insert the date on the run command when you select the Insert Date on your right click menu. You will have to put it C/Program Files/***** then browse to select it.

Arguements.....you may or may not have to enter something here it will rely on the script writer
Working Folder....you may or may not have to enter something here it will rely on the script writer

Hope that helps I think it should work.

Whoops I’d better tell you to apply the changes (green tick top left)

Haven’t tried it myself as yet so may need some tweaking by you just trying to help

No the context menu is not hard and thank you for your response.

Please refrain from commenting if you cannot be of any aid in giving me a solution for my idea.  I know exactly what I want, and I don't want anything different.  I have a macro keyboard, I can program a key to insert the date - I don't want that.  I want to insert the date with the mouse, from a context menu, wherever text would be input.  Thanks for previous suggestions but it is like trying to sell me a bicycle when what I am looking for is a car.   :)

Have you tried a Google search for context menu add item

You may have to do a registry hack though .

132
Hi

Installed OK

One would have thought that a password entry to the program would have been the first priority to any such application.

Otherwise looks ok

A feature for the future would be the ability to copy via a click to the clipboard

Take a gander at pd-base

nogojoe.

thanks AK_

Have tried the new version with premiumbooster and it works OK.

So maybe it was just my computer unless you could  replicated the same bug you didn’t really say as such.

Use File Nanny all the time

Thanks

nogojoe: I could add a proper pause action. When you pause now, the taskbar is still set to autohide and so it hides completely.

Skrommel

Hi Skommel

I would be grateful if you could do that as I have the program in the startup folder .Its when I leave the comp and someone else uses it they wonder what’s the hell is wrong with it when they can‘t see the taskbar .
Occasionally I am only away for a few minutes and someone else takes over not necessary the same person each time.
If you could post the code on here I could take from there.

Many thanks
nogojoe.

Hi Skommel

Like this AHK immensely

Just have one small query though : when PushToShow is running and when I want to pause the script for a short period through the icon in the taskbar , the taskbar stays active until you click on something on the desktop then reverts back to hiding the taskbar although the icon still shows that it should be paused (ie showing red instead of green).

Failing having actually to close and exit the program is there a remedy you can effect

Thanks nogojoe

Hi
this is more for gogogadgetscott.

Love your program and I have included a shortcut to the sendto menu on my computer.
when I  right click a folder and get to your program in the send to menu iconanyfolder opens up at the last folder that I had used with iconanyfolder. Instead of opening up with the folder that I had right clicked in the first place.
It means having to scroll through the directories to find the folder that you want to action on.
It would be good if that could be amended at some time as an enhancement.

Hi Rusty Irons

You could have a look at Yeah Write  http://www.yeahwrite.com/

although it is really a word processor it does have a very easy address book in it.

It operates under a  drawer and tab system very fast loading it gives you a opportunity to test as a free edition (some limitations) or fully fledged edition for 15 days (trial) or purchase a license.

Can operate on a usb stick.

Suggest you have a look at it
the tab system lends you to have different addresss books and they are all there ready to click on.

You can remove the excess tabs that you don’t want (todo lists etc).     Can email from it but not receive emails.

only a 1 mb download.
No bugs last update was in 2002 very sound and I have had no hassles.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Idea : change dates in quicken
« on: February 12, 2008, 02:50 PM »
:) Another soul saved from the hells of repetition!

Skrommel

Did run into some problems with trying to automate the whole list of transactions to change.
had problems with to many transactions being acted on in a row and to quickly causing quicken not to register the transaction .tried to slow the process down by putting in sleep between transactions but that helped a little. The process seemed to fail on the dd/mm/ and I needed to slow that down. I’m not up to speed yet to work out that part. Will work on it and will have to study up things (trying to understand the ahk.help is the hardest)however trial and error is a good thing.

However have found that it maybe easier to tackle the downloaded transactions before I import them into quicken.
It becomes a matter of search and replace without upsetting the the quicken account files.
Has worked OK doing it that way. Just a matter of loading the file into word and find and replace .
Would be a bit of a bummer if there was a transaction with $2008 in it and it got changed to $08.
Just have to watch what I am doing

Of course as Skrommel would say there is a way to do it with AutoHotkey. :D

:) If you can get it done by keyboard, AutoHotkey can do it for you.

Have a look at the Send command in the documentation at http://www.autohotkey.com.

Skrommel

Hi Skrommel

I have downloaded autohotkey and have got to the stage of it working using the AutoScriptWriter.exe

there were a few hiccups along the way however I can get what I want done by as you say by the Send command
If I open the quicken account and get the focus onto where I want to start I can get it to work Ok (quicken automatically inserts the current date in the 1st empty transaction available which is a bit of a nuisance )

this is the tailend of the script

Send, //08{ENTER}

You couldn’t tell me how to get it to repeat that command until all the transactions are completed.
I have it going alright using AutoScriptWriter script over 3 or 4 transactions but I need it to do 200 odd transactions every month.

Thanks nogojoe

Post New Requests Here / Idea : change dates in quicken
« on: February 10, 2008, 09:06 PM »
Hi Coders,

I need a simple code for my Quicken program.
When I download statements from my bank the entries are in 00/00/2008 date format.
To get things in order within the quicken program I have change the date format to 00/00/08.
This is simple to do two taps on the forward slash key on the numpad bypasses the dd/mm/and all i have to do is enter 08 and hit the enter key to complete the action.
Quicken automatically focusses back to dd on the next transaction and i repeat it all again.
Very repetitive after a couple of hundred transactions.
If some could could code those actions I would be grateful
to summarize

initial start on focus (which will be the day date ) two forward slashes to bypass the dd mm (leaving those dates unchanged) then entering 08 into the year date : then action enter to complete the transaction
Then repeat the the series again till the finish.
Quicken doesn’t allow you to carry on filling in dates as above(only on existing transactions) so the code could finish when there are no more transactions to change.

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for finance app
« on: February 04, 2008, 02:31 PM »
I'd like to revisit this thread. I have used Quicken and MS Money in the past. I still have a copy of MS Money 2005. I haven't used either for over a year. I want to start the new year off right.

I don't want to use Quicken or Money because the number one aggravation I had was that the software did 1,001 things and I only wanted to use 10 of them. I had to put up with all these fricken menu items and tabs and wizards and crap. I found it aggravating and I already have
enough to be aggravated about when it comes to money.

Stick with Quicken

Hi Tinjaw

May be if you open up your account in Quicken and then do as follows (from Quicken help)

Normally, Quicken reopens the same windows you were using when you exited Quicken. However, you can make Quicken remember a specific set of windows to reopen.

To save a specific set of windows for your desktop:

1   Arrange your desktop the way you want Quicken to remember it.
2   Choose Edit menu > Options > Desktop.
3   Select Save Current Desktop, and click OK.
To return to the normal setting, where Quicken remembers a new version of your desktop every time you exit, choose Save Desktop on Exit instead.

It bypasses everything and goes straight to the account you want.

There is a lot of surplus stuff on starting up but all that can be eliminated by various means

Money 2006 is gone, Quicken 2006 is here! Quicken blew my mind... it's nothing like Money. Far more customizable, extremely user-friendly, tons of tools, very nice interface, powerful... it's rather amazing. I'm thinking about buying it already.. and I've only played with it today. I just need the Deluxe version. Even that one, the most basic Quicken, comes with more features than I'll ever use.

Does anyone know if they offer student discounts?

Thanks!

Methinks that Micosoft bought out Quicken a few years ago when Money couldn’t foot it with Quicken.

I think i'll add a config window with a few options, like :
- custom context-menu text
- convert . - _ %20 to spaces in folder name
- "Custom folder mode" as described there :
It seems to me, though, that the times that you would NOT want to do some small edit of the folder name are very few. I would favor having it go directly to the rename box by default and do away with the shift key altogether. If you didn't want to make a change you're already a lot of clicks and keystrokes ahead of the game and could simply hit the OK button.
-BigJim

Any ideas are welcome :)

Thanks AK for filenanny.

Have just picked up a bug.

Tried to convert a file named PremiumBooster.zip and it wouldn’t do the business after successfully converting several hundred files without any problem.

Took a hunch and put a space between Premium and Booster and it worked OK

Post New Requests Here / Re: DONE: MiniMe (aka MaxiMe)
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:38 AM »
aye you can code it to maximize the last minimized window but it would only make sense if no window is selected.. you better look at putaside.

Thats good just what i was after.
Was running minime as well and ran into trouble with the scroll key not functioning.
As minime has 2x scroll lock as an action it kinda waylaid Putaside.

All 3 actions Minime and Putaside create would be great if they could compliment each other as there is a need for all three.
It would be great if all three could operate with the 2x key action possibly using the print screen/scroll lock/pause-break keyboard keys.
The way I see it you could have

2x print screen minimizes the window to the taskbar

2x scroll lock hides all windows and if possible 1x scroll lock does what shift/scroll does now (or maybe 3xscroll 2x scroll lock)

2x pause break toggles the window minimize maximize without sending to the taskbar.

Just my thought

nogojoe

On second thoughts the print screen/scroll lock key actions could be reversed would feel better.

What’s is the shortcut for maximizing a window from the taskbar :tellme:
That's the problem... There isn't one :)
You have to look for the right window with alt+tab, and when you release alt+tab, it'll be restored (come out from the taskbar).

Well you know what the next question is Can you code it with a 2x print scr :D :D

Hi, FWIW, alt-spacebar, n has worked to minimise the active window, for me, since Win95.  Nice to see some quick coding solving your problem in the way you want, though.

Will
that is true , but this way toggles from minimize to maximize --maximise to minimize using the same action 2xpause/break .

The 2x scroll lock comes in handy when you wish to get a window out of the way.
tried it with several windows open goes great

I’m liking it more and more.

Hi jgpaiva

Pause break works ok toogles to minimize open window to what size you want and reopens fully

Scroll lock just sends the current window straight to  the taskbar with no other action cant raise it to full open window from there,(via those keys)

Doesn’t interfere with spellcatcher plus now.

Hi Coders

Like this idea , kinda works for me half pie. the 2x operation is great

2x right control minimizes the open window to the taskbar.

2x right shift does nothing to open the window from the taskbar  but does open when the window has been half closed via the middle button (top right toolbar ... middle button ).

Plays havoc with my program Spell Catcher Plus as it has Ctrl as its main menu/macro key .although I have changed those macro keys it still picks up the ctrl somewhere along the line and opens its window.

Is it possible to have the Scroll lock + Pause break keys  operate the actions for minimize/maximize.
I never use those keys at all on my keyboard.

I have a standard 101/102 key or Micrsoft Natural PS/2 keyboard     running Win Xp sp2

Thanks  nogojoe
