Just one question, where in the first amendment does it say free speech is an anonymous right?
It's one thing to affirm it's the nature of the web and yadda,yadda, but to wrap up hateful and harassing speech into something as noble as "free speech" is a bit of a stretch.
If free speech is such a noble human right then why be afraid to claim ownership of it?

Or maybe everyone on the web is all about rights without responsibility?
Pretty shallow stance IMO.

That's part of what I was originally trying to say: In a way, I think it would be good to require your real name, just like most sites require a real e-mail address. But I also don't like the idea of everyone everywhere knowing my name. I'd rather it be hidden from everyone, also like most sites that require a real e-mail address.

Then again, if John Q. Public makes a fan website with a little forum about how great Xbox is, I don't see the point in it requiring real information from me. Just like when I go to a store and buy something, I don't need to tell them my name and address and phone number.

A lot of stores these days will ask for your phone number for some reason. I just tell them they can't have it. Obviously if I'm buying something with a credit/debit card, the card will contain information leading back to who I am. But that's all done through my bank. The store doesn't keep a record of my card number and bank details, and therefore have no direct way of knowing who I am.

I don't really need to be anonymous, but in the information age where any idiot/wacko/criminal who knows how to run Google can find nearly any bit of information, I'd rather keep most of my personally identifying information private. I'll gladly attribute anything I say to my username, but I don't want just anybody to find out who I am or where I live.

The world is smaller than it was when the Declaration of Independence was signed. There are a lot more people in our lives than there were then. That means a lot more idiots and wackos out there who might do something stupid just because they disagree with me. In the old small-town lifestyle, criminals and wackos were basically run out of town. These days they are protected. I say keep my information away from them!

I can understand the reasons: anonymous threats, trolling, griefing, etc., whatever you want to call it.

And to be honest at first thought it sounds like a good idea to have your real name somewhere, to track down abusers. But to make it mandatory for everyone to see who you are? Not good.

I'm for anonymous posting, but it would be nice if there were better ways to track down the people who do stupid stuff like terrorize or threaten others. I remember a certain incident with Kathy Sierra where tracking down and punishing the jerks who threatened her would have been really useful.

But there's a great quote (which I can't remember exactly) that's been spread around a lot since the Patriot Act came to town, something along the lines of: "Those who give up personal liberties for the feeling of security deserve neither."

Alas, 95% of my gaming is console gaming . . .

I love Test Drive Unlimited, but play it on my Xbox 360 not PC -- I'm pretty sure the online functions of the two are completely separate.

Yeah, it's still rare to see the merging of PC/console online. The only game I can think of that does it is Final Fantasy XI, though I'm sure there are some others.

Okay, so I have to admit, back in 2006 when I installed Xfire the first time, I wasn't very pleased with it. It seemed big, obtrusive, and redundant, since the only reason I installed it was at the behest of my friend, who I already IMed with using other IM programs.

But now that I actually know a few people who play games, I'm not too bothered by Xfire anymore. It's nice to see what your friends are doing, the voice chat is fairly straightforward and works well, and chatting within the game works nicely too. I'm not too pleased with the shortcut (scroll lock + x) because I don't like it turning on my keyboard lights, but it's not so bad.

Anyway, it's not so bad as I initially deemed it to be.

I just have to say that Sauerbraten is the most fun I've had in an FPS since the good old days of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64.

The map editor is in game and very powerful. It's also very easy to use with a mild learning curve. You just push a button to change from edit mode to kill mode. And what's great is you can have people join you and you can all collaborate on a map together. This lets you test things in real time with people you know or strangers on the internet.

If you're interested in games and FPS at all, you really need to download Sauerbraten! I can't recommend it enough!

EDIT: Okay, I feel I should come back here and explain what it is I like about it. I really enjoy being able to create something and work as a team creating something one minute, then the next minute blast other people around on your creation. Plus with the servers, anybody can join in (though you do have standard control like kick/ban, etc.) and instantly tell you how awesome your map is, and people who have more experience than you can show you some cool techniques and help improve your map.

That's what I like about it.

As far as an FPS game goes, it's probably a bit substandard. Weapons don't have secondary functions. No ducking. Changing weapons is a little confusing. . . There are lots of things that make it not as wonderful as something like Team Fortress. But it is Open Source, freely available, and instant, hectic fun!

If you can see your desktop, then using Windows default removable drive thingy isn't so bad. Just left click the tray icon once, then select the drive you want to disconnect. Done.

i'm sure we've all heard the saying "if ain't broke don't try to fix it" or something like that.

i think something similar is appropriate for people afraid to try anything on their computer, i.e. "if it ain't working, don't try to click it" - or something like that.

hmm, that's actually the opposite of what they should be doing though, maybe "if it ain't working, just click it" or "if it ain't working, please, just have a try, go on, just click it - it won't explode, believe, i'm not lying to you".

The problem with this is that it's those stray clicks the really mess them up. I don't know how my grandma does it, but she gets her task bar docked to the side or top of the screen, gets her display turned sideways (for monitors that can rotate), gets her resolution changed... All kinds of things that seem impossible for someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

I don't know why people think they never need to read anything on the computer. A dialog could pop up saying "Warning! Are you sure you want to install this virus that will wipe out your computer completely and release a new strain of the black plague which will destroy humanity?" and someone would just click "okay" because they never read those things.

The quick way is checking whether you have a file called ntos.exe in %SystemRoot\system32, like mouser mentioned above.

Mine too! I've done three versions of my handwriting as a font... but I need to standardize the placement of the letters in the squares as I keep varying it too much and the result is not natural. Need some pointers from Nosh and Deozaan, I guess

Why don't you activate the (well hidden) colored guidelines? You can do this through the Template page on the Options dialog.

In the options you can print faint guidelines that don't show up when you scan them. It really helped me. You can really see the difference between my first font where letters were all over the place and my second font where most things were pretty well aligned.

It feels a bit like practicing your writing in 1st grade again. Lines of where to put the base of the character, plus the higher line for tall letters and the lower line for letters with "monkey tails."

My brother and I have successfully used XFire built in voice over the past week. But we haven't tested it with multiple people at once. He says he notices some lag when we're doing voice, but I haven't noticed anything. We haven't been playing games that require everything to be completely lag free, though. (No FPS games, just MMO type)

thanks for the helpful suggestions everyone. i've set a gmail account up for them. they are likely to actually forget what email provider they are using after they've been abroad so picking an obvious one like google will help them remember - i hope.

this couple would win the award for most clueless pc users ever - bearing in mind they have had a computer since the windows 95 days.

Be sure to set up an e-mail client on their PC and set up POP download so they can just open it and go. Have it remember their password and stuff. They'll never need to remember who their provider is except to give out their e-mail address to people.

There's really nothing wrong with letting it install to drive C: (unless you don't have a drive C)

If you just don't like programs being where they don't belong, another thing you can try is moving the directory it installs itself to to the H: drive and updating your shortcuts. If the software doesn't rely on the registry for knowing where it's installed, that might work. Just remember that this would break the uninstaller and you'd have to remember to manually delete the files when/if you decide you no longer want the software.
