emacs's org mode gives you the best plain text support ever. it even does tables (in text). Very good outliner.
Still, a bit of a learning curve...
yes, yes, Emacs can do everything.
but my love editor is Vim.
with some plugin, it works as outliner.
but not as convient as a real outliner.

I know it's hard to find such a satisfied tool.
but I noticed not quite a few people, eg. mouser, also said prefer of plain text.
so I still start this post.
maybe, such users can join together raise some money or award, to help some programmer make a such tool.
degrad a more advanced tool, such as mybase, evernote, theguide, to plain text maybe also a good idea.

nice to find a reader here.
so you can imagine that I, in fact, tested most of such tools.
I tested Zoot 1 year ago, it handle very very long text is not so good, but that's not important.
and when I test the new version, just meet the same problem as you mentioned.
with it can solve it.

but also, the AceText team has got my email about the wrap bug.
if the done, I'll use AceText.

as you mentioned about the Vim, that's also my No.1 tool.
the Chinese software textfriend 良友收藏家 support external editor, can use vim.
but ceased developement several years ago.

hey xbeta, I am a reader of your blog 8)

I am personally very fond of zoot. It lacks utf support (but it deal perfectly with chinese as long as you set your locale to chinese) and is not freeware (you can continue to use it with a annoying notice upon start up after it expires). It has a 32bit version which unfortunately failed to start on chinese windows. I have complaint about it in the forum, hopefully with the current pace of ungrading, the author will get it right soon.

The good thing about zoot is the amazing search capability and flexbility of the database. However, one thing I miss is the ability to use an external editor. if only we can use vim along with zoot...mmmm....

Horst Schaeffer's MemPad

support utf-8.
Don't know.  It doesn't support Unicode; see this message.  As far as I know, it ticks most of your other boxes.
it's a small tool. I used the earlier version several years ago.
the only problem is it cannot search & find Chinese.

Jreepad is a java based program, like treepad.
the only shortcoming is the font is too small, bad for eyes, and cannot be changed.

29
This is what you are looking for:  AceText - text & clipboard manager (for coders, writers, etc.)

 :)
this is good. thanks.

I have nerver try it before. although I use EditPad 8 years ago (but then UltraEdit, then Vim). It's very fast even in huge text files. very good.

one thing bad for Chinese is the word wrap. that is:

wrap means begin a new line.
for English, it's good to start a new line at a positon of "space, tab", instead of split a word.
but for Chinese, there are no space needed in sentence. but often use space or tab before a paragraph.
so, the software make the first 4 or 8 spaces or tab in line 1, then the text.
that's not good.

now, the author had got my test file, and trying to do somthing.
If it solved, I 'll order it at once.

I noticed the new version (not the current url ) some days ago.
and we have finished a Chinese translation of the famous best-46-freeware:
http://xbeta.info/be...6_free_utilities.htm
this is also mentioned in the lates issue of newsletter:
4.3 The 46 Best Freeware List Now in Chinese

also, there is a page for Screenshot Captor, maybe need to update.
http://xbeta.info/screenshot_captor.htm

wish donationcoder can also go better and better.

there are many such kinds of software like notes taker/info manager/outliner, most of them are so powerful.
there are also many threads about such tools in this forum.
but I noticed, many people, include me, dont like the support of RTF or html or attachment.
what we really want is a simple "plain text" organzier.

they should be small & quick, powerful & stable.
should can: export/import text, quick search in all datebase, tree stucture, support utf-8. (treepad have bug in support Chinese, jreepad OK)
better can: tabbed interface, password protect, tag, support external editor (I enjoy vim), freeware
no need: text format, attachment.

maybe most of the developers think, plain text is so limited, so they have to expand it to rtf or html.
but there also are some users, they think formated text are far beyond their needs, and eager to go back to plain text.

Will we appeal for it together ?
Will some one, including the more advanced tools's author, will develop/degrade such a tool for us ?

Hello xbeta:
We wanted to share with you that full version of EverNote was offered for free for one day on the site GiveAway Of The Day (www.giveawayoftheday.com) on Nov. 15. This was a big success for both EverNote and GAOTD (see press-release at http://www.evernote....ws/pr/2007-12-17.php). We have decided to repeat this offer with EverNote Portable which can run on the PC, as well as directly from USB drives, SD cards and other "removable media". EverNote Portable is normally available only as commercial product ($19.95, current Holiday Sale price $14.95). EverNote Portable will be offered for free from giveawayoftheday.com for two days in a row, Dec. 27 and 28. The announcement is below (it mentions only one giveaway date...). Maybe, Chinese sites and blogs you are affiliated with will be interested to promote this news to their audience and let people download our licensed software for free for a limited 2-day period and only from one site www.giveawayoftheday.com. (As you know, EverNote now supports IME input and the number of articles and downloads from Far East is quickly growing...)
  Best wishes for 2008!
  - The EverNote Team

In addition, EverNote Portable gives customers access to all of their notes without installing any software on the host computer.
EverNote Portable offers mobile users most of the popular features and functionality of the desktop version of EverNote including the Universal Clipper, note search, with the added ability to access their notes from any computer—at any time.

EverNote allows you to easily capture any information you like, and find it whenever you want. Create text or handwritten notes, import mobile phone snapshots, clip web pages, and grab content from any application directly into EverNote - so everything is kept in a single place.

Once your data is in EverNote, find it quickly using our advanced search, automatic and custom categories, and intuitive interface.

EverNote innovates by storing content on an endless, virtual roll of paper. You can quickly scroll chronologically through your notes similar to scanning through handwritten notes in a notebook.

how to activate? see the flash in http://blog.sina.com...6dac66f01000cyn.html

my friends, glad to share another freeware from Chinese-- IE Plus. Sure, it has English version & English homepage.
I know many people use Maxthon (from Chinese) or Firefox (like me), or Opera, but there are still many use just the pure IE. For these people, maybe you or your friends & collegues, the IE Plus is worth of trying.

the author, deepin, is very famous in Chinese for his Lite Windows XP -- I used it for a long time, after install, only cost 500MB disk space, runs very fast and also, very important, stable. I mean that, I have a windows license, but use the deepin Lite XP, for higher speed and little disk space.

Come to IE Plus,

download http://www.shendoo.c...IEPlus-1.2-Setup.exe 578KB

IEPlus Introduction
IEPlus is an add-on for Microsoft© Internet Explorer, which brings you more convenience for plain Internet Explorer and thus to make your surfing fun and more comfortable, with only minimum resource requirement. Besides that, you can use the My Home, My Page feature to customize your personal home page, managing your favorite websites and RSS feeds, using various search engines to search different kinds of media, and write personal to-do list to arrange your time.

IEPlus can enrich your browse experience with features like close tab on double click, super drag and drop, browse history management, multi-proxy management, mouse gesture, ads block based on URL and content, URL shortcut, crash recovery, hotkey and a powerful plugin system ready to be extended. IEPlus' motto is to do more with less, thus it is thin, stable and is very user-friendly. During your use of it, we are sure you will have this feeling gradually.

I can fully understand all the followings:
 - Chinese language is really hard to learn or just to read for many people.
 - Most popular software produced in China also has a English version, such as Maxthon, FlashGet, NetAnts, Orbit Downloader ...
 - But WPS is a little different. And nobody else except the KingSoft Compnay, has the ability or time to provide a language pack for it.

So, my friends, you have to wait for the officail English verison to use this great (maybe) software.

38
I use lots of English version software,
so you can also use a Chinese version  :)
is it too hard?

39
kingsoft company, the author of wps, is a Chinese company.
Almost all their market share is in China.
that's why the WPS english version comes out too late.
Maybe the english version is not free for personal use, I am not sure.
But the Chinese version is free.

General Software Discussion / Re: IBM Lotus Symphony:a flash movie
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:24 AM »
good idea, I upload it as attach in origin post.
thanks xbeta, since being told about IBM's Lotus Symphony, i had been planning to download but somehow kept putting it off.. btw, how about a flash movie with English wordings.. :)

WPS Office(or called Kingsoft Office) suites is made in China, and now has localized to English. It was better than MS office until windows 95 released. After that, it lost many users. But now, they rebuild their products. Now it's very very alike to MS office, with 99% functions & 99% Compatible to MS Office format, but with only 40+MB to download.

Kingsoft Writer, Kingsoft Spreadsheets, and Kingsoft Presentation are compatible with
Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint respectively,
and they are compatible in two-way reading and writing.

Although I use OOo instead of WPS, but I think it's better for basic users.

   homepage(english): http://www.kingsoftr...h.com/kso/index.html
   download (43MB, English install): http://www.kingsoftr...com/kso/download.htm

It comprises of Writer, Spreadsheets and Presentation
best compatiable to MS office (better than OpenOffice) format: doc, xls, ppt
almost the same layout & interface with MS Office
Convert documents to Adobe PDF effortlessly, with the export as PDF function.
Kingsoft Office 2007 is compliant with today's XML standards so documents can be opened on other computers.

General Software Discussion / IBM Lotus Symphony:a flash movie
« on: September 26, 2007, 07:37 PM »
for those who want to experience it, but think it's too large to download & install,
here is a flash made by me, with freeware Wink.
maybe give you some idea.

you can visit the flash in attachment (now in English)

more detail (in Chinese):  :)http://blog.sina.com...6dac66f01000c16.html

43
I translated some of this post into Chinese.
see http://blog.sina.com...n/u/46dac66f01000aow

44
this is the effect.
Maybe 96dpi is the right number.
but it' was OK for me in previous versions yet.

45
yes, i have tried 72dpi, but It's not exact the 100% size in word.
On my thinkpad, when i set 95 dpi, it's nearly the 100% (also most clear) size.
but, i think for the best effect when insert image from png file to ms word or OOo, the png file should have no info of dpi.
when use gif  and other file formats (there is no dpi info in file), it's OK.
when just copy & paste, (instead of insert image from file), it's OK.

46
v2.30.04 - 2/09/07
  • When copying and pasting to programs that support DPI information, Screenshot Captor now honors the DPI settings in options (solves bug where images were small when being copied and pasted into outlook, etc).
    How to use it?
I grab an area and auto save to png file with dpi=300. When I insert picture from this file in MS word or OOo, it's still small (same as previous versions). I can find the dpi=300 information in the png file with irfanview. I can also delete this information with it. After that, inserting pic from the irfanview revised png file into doc will get a correct result.
when use gif and other file formats, it's OK.
when just copy & paste, (instead of insert image from file), it's OK.

Thanks to alxwz, I added File Matrix in my list.
Emacs is not a pure file manager, so no Emacs.
 ( I use VIM. )

Great tool!
As good as pdffactory,
smaller than PDFcreator.
