Coding Snacks / Re: Dual Restart Program
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:18 AM »
Why would you need to enter safe mode and restart again normally? In general it is better if you explain why you need things, because it's likely that a different solution already exists that we can point you to.

27
If my assumption that you are using Windows is true, then I'm sorry that I cannot help you now. I'm 400 miles away from my Windows machine, and I won't be there probably for another month.

It' still a good idea, though, and I do hope someone can make this happen.  :D

28
It can be done with version control system, especially with decentralized ones (e.g. Git or Mercurial), probably plus a script to do commits whenever a change (file created/deleted/edited) is made.

Living Room / Re: Skype now has a "Login With Facebook" Button
« on: June 15, 2012, 06:19 AM »
From what I noticed, Facebook does use some Microsoft products in it, such as Bing Translate to translate posts in foreign languages, and Office web app for viewing attached Microsoft Office files. I won't be surprised if they integrate Skype with Facebook Chat.

It's likely that the black bar at the top of page is just a temporary navigation aid while Google is preparing for a new user interface. I read it here yesterday.

Living Room / Re: Film vs. Movie?
« on: August 11, 2011, 01:11 AM »
app103 - Fortunately (or is it unfortunately?) where I live, a cinema that plays better movies (which means any movie other than cheap erotic ones) is still considered a luxury. That means they have good and clean restrooms, comfy chairs, and pretty spacious leg room. Better (or worse) yet, buying a DVD is actually even more expensive than paying ticket for 5. The taxes are too damn high. We still have to deal with annoying people though, and having a DVD means we can watch it over and over. I myself prefer to go to the cinema for visually pleasing movies and buy DVDs for more complex movies that I would watch more than once. For other movies I'd just borrow from my friends (rental is not very popular here). :P

Oh, and one of the best advantages of watching a DVD is we can pause it at any time should we need to go to the toilet or fetch some snacks. :P

worstje, 40hz - Wow, that explains a lot. Thank you very much! I know it's never wrong to ask about anything here. :P

As for the technical definition of "film" as the medium in which data are saved (as steeladept & joiwind said), I am aware of it, and actually that's why I was confused and couldn't understand what the posters wanted to say. :-\

Renegade's description that "film" is used in the "literary" sense also gives me some new perspectives, thank you.

And now that I understand what the posters wanted to say, I must admit those are some clever ads.

Man, DC is the best forum I've ever known. :D

Living Room / Film vs. Movie?
« on: August 10, 2011, 11:11 AM »
So the New York International Latino Film Festival posters (nylatinofilm.com) apparently encourage us to watch films, not movies. English is not my primary language, so I don't know the difference between films and movies. In my language, what I thought they define as "movies" and "films" have the same translation: "film". I duckduckgo-ed for the difference but have not found anything useful to separate what I know as "film" into the two categories "movies" and "films". Would some native English speaker (or perhaps movie/film enthusiasts) here clear things out for me? I'm confused as hell.  :-\

Edit: Here's a blog post showing all of the posters.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Bvckup 2
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:29 PM »
I must agree with merle. While the website design is visually very pleasant, it is not very intuitive to navigate. While at the top of page I recognize that I can click the "INFO" lid at the bottom, the next part of the page shown does not indicate that there are more information if I scroll down. I would expect another lid or button to show more information.

While this is not a big problem for the website, if it's indeed showcasing the design of the upcoming bvckup2, you might have to review the UI design and make sure the design is consistent throughout the program, for usability sake.

Anyway, I really like your idea of single purpose program and wish the best for bvckup2.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Date/Time and Battery Status Bar
« on: February 11, 2011, 12:33 AM »
Hi worstje, it's been a while... I've also been busy.   :-[

First of all, thank you for making the changes I requested. :D

I have tried the new version and it works as I wanted, but with one tiny issue: for example I temporarily hide the bar by middle-clicking or Ctrl+clicking it and switch the focus to another program (let's say Notepad). After 5 seconds the bar shows itself but also gains focus, and therefore the Notepad window loses focus. This may cause unwanted interruption, but since I don't use my netbook for any critical tasks, I don't really need a fix for this. I am happy with the current version and my netbook will never boot (Windows) without Teensymon.

With its current version, I wouldn't need any configuration files, so unless somebody else asks for configurability, I don't think you need to make any other changes. :)

Once again, thank you very much.  ;)

36
You're welcome :)

Doesn't work in Win 7. :(

It is odd that Microsoft removed the feature to select multiple taskbar buttons, but as this article shows, it is still available from the task manager.

But if you only need to tile/cascade windows from the same program, good news! Windows 7 gives you the tile/cascade options by Shift+right clicking the taskbar button!

If you want to tile/cascade windows from different programs, though, Windows 7 still gives options to tile/cascade unminimized windows, by right clicking an empty space in the taskbar. So it would mean that you have to minimize all but the windows you want to tile, right click the taskbar, and select one of the windows arrangement options.

Hope this helps :)

38
Actually that feature is already available in Windows Taskbar. I don't know about Windows 7's Superbar (I'll try it later, I'm using my Windows Vista workstation now), but in Windows XP/Vista (and maybe the older versions too), you can select multiple tasks in your Taskbar by holding Ctrl while clicking the taskbar buttons. So to achieve what you wanted, you just need to:

1. Press Win+D to minimize all tasks,
2. Click one task in the taskbar,
3. Hold Ctrl while clicking other tasks that you want to tile/cascade,
4. Right click on one of the selected tasks,
5. Choose one of the options (in Windows Vista: Cascade, Show Windows Stacked, Show Windows Side by Side).

As far as I'm concerned, unfortunately it doesn't work with Google Chrome.

If your country imports Chinese goods (which country doesn't anyway?) you must try to get one made-in-China mouse. It usually has left, middle, and right buttons as well as scroll wheel. In my country the cheapest ones are sold at 15,000 IDR (less than 1.7 USD)! No lie! And I have one that still works after 4 years ;)

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Date/Time and Battery Status Bar
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:52 AM »
Two more things:

First, since the bar width is dynamic (e.g. when the battery is fully charged, it shrinks because it no longer shows the time remaining) and I am using it on the rightmost of the screen (under the min/max/close buttons as you suggested), perhaps you can make the bar to align to the right?

Second, since I rarely use mice when using a netbook and the touch pad doesn't have a middle button, perhaps I can use something like Ctrl+left click to temporarily hide the bar instead of middle click?

Thank you :)

Sorry for late reply, I was out for business lunch  :-[

v0.3.1 now works fine both in my win Vista work station and my win 7 netbook, great job!
(On a side note, I've really never been on IRC :P)

Once again I thank you worstje for your great work and the rest of DC for your suggestions :)

@lanux12

I have tried WinBar, it's nice and more friendly than StatBar, but still not exactly what I need :)

@skwire & app103

Power Meter + app's DClock 2 look like what I need but the Power Meter wastes too much space :(

@worstje

Thanks :)
BTW for my main work station I actually prefer more choices, but for a netbook the simpler the better ;)

@worstje

Nice little program!
However I cannot run the program on my Windows 7 32-bit netbook. (I have installed the redistributable package.) I tried it in Windows Vista 32-bit (my work computer) and it worked, but after several minutes it also went crashed. Here's the error I got in Windows 7:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   Teensymon.exe
  Application Version:   0.3.0.0
  Application Timestamp:   4cefe689
  Fault Module Name:   Teensymon.exe
  Fault Module Version:   0.3.0.0
  Fault Module Timestamp:   4cefe689
  Exception Code:   c0000094
  Exception Offset:   000013ce

  Additional Information 3:   0a9e
  Additional Information 4:   0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

What seems to be the problem?

Anyway, about the date format -- where I live, we usually use DD-MM-YYYY format, while the rest of the world seems to be using MM-DD-YYYY format. This has led to many case of confusion when using all-digit date format. That's why I prefer to display the month's name. But perhaps shorter words (e.g. Sat, Nov 27, 2010) is better to save space. Would you do that?  ;)

Oh, and I love the anti-features, Exactly what I need!

Thanks,

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Date/Time and Battery Status Bar
« on: November 25, 2010, 11:00 PM »
@lanux128

I only need the battery and date/time info, so maybe WinBar is an overkill. I have tried StatBar that has similar function, but it is not resource friendly to run on a netbook. I left my netbook home right now so I can't try it on my netbook. I'll give it a try once I get home and let you know how it works, but I still think that WinBar is also an overkill :)

@worstje

That's a great idea! I didn't think about that before
Please do code it for me whenever you have a time. Thank you very much :D

Finished Programs / DONE: Date/Time and Battery Status Bar
« on: November 25, 2010, 10:31 PM »
First things first, English is not my native language so I apologize if I'm not very clear.

When using a notebook, I usually don't hide the taskbar for three main reasons: quick launch, clock, and battery notification. I like my app launcher (in this case Quick Launch) to be always visible, so that to launch a program I only need two actions: locate the program's icon and click the icon. Setting to auto hide means more actions: show the launcher, locate the icon, and then click the icon. I also need the clock to be always visible as a quick reminder for lunch break or other small things that just don't worth having a dedicated reminder program for them. The battery notification is to remind me when I need to plug/unplug the adaptor.

But I also have a netbook, and with netbooks, screen estate is very limited, so I choose to auto hide the taskbar. I'm OK with trading quick launch for screen height, but I still need the clock and battery notification to be always visible. So, what I'd like to have is a small bar that stays on top of the screen, about 12 pixels or so in height, just to show the current date, time, and battery status. The bar should also resize the screen work area so that it doesn't cover the titlebar of a maximized window. I attached a simple mock up to show what I mean.

mock-up.png

Additionally, it is also nice if the battery status info changes color, let's say red when in critical battery level and green when the battery is fully charged. I also prefer 24-hour format.

Similar programs are StatBar and Rainlendar I believe, but they are too complex for what I need.

Same here (Indonesia). It was supposedly dry season from March till August and rainy season from September to February. But since last year the seasons has turned from 6-moths periods to 1-week period. It is now raining, and there was even storm yesterday and the day before, but last week it was sunny. And it goes like that all the year. Global warming effects?

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Alternative shells
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:34 PM »
here's my opinions:

1. litestep is resource-friendly and very customizable, but to get the max out of it you have to understand the scripting language.
resource friendliness: 8/10
customizability: 10/10
user interface: (1..10)/10 (depends on how you customize it)
friendliness in configuration: 4/10

2. sharpe looks good and friendly, and is customizable too, not as much as litestep though. but unfortunately it's not so resource friendly.
resource friendliness: 4/10
customizability: 6/10
user interface: 9/10
friendliness in configuration: 8/10

3. emerge desktop is very resource friendly and customizable, and you can also use any other .exe (even explorer) as a part of emerge desktop.
resource friendliness: 9/10
customizability: 9/10
user interface: (7..8 )/10
friendliness in configuration: 7/10

sorry for bad english  :-[
