Fences is the one that is still running after a couple days. I'm not sure if all the components are quite ready to be run, all at once, on "preview" builds of Windows 10. I was getting completely-black context menus, no start button, lost wallpaper, crazy stuff... I need to add things one at a time and see what's worth the CPU/memory hit.

77
I've always wanted to try some of these. Makes me think (fondly) of compiz on linux. Checking out now. Note that my total was $21.19 with tax.

Living Room / Re: Zip Drives revisited
« on: May 31, 2016, 07:38 AM »
I have one in a box someplace too - I got it for free as part of some sort of rebate or class-action suit or something. I don't remember now, but I remember there was a catalog that I could choose something out of. The lab PCs in college had built-in zip drives so it was at least useful for a little while.

You yourself mentioned this one 9 years ago (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6979.0). It's not exactly in space.

General Software Discussion / Looking for spam filter
« on: March 30, 2016, 05:59 PM »
I'm looking for a spam filter for my wife's email. She checks it on her android tablet most often. I have a windows PC running 24/7 so I was thinking I could run some sort of email client that accesses her email (IMAP) and moves potential spam to a folder.

Seems like most programs of this type act as proxies: i.e. they run a mailserver to which your desktop mail client connects. I don't want this, because I'm not using a desktop client to check her mail.

For my email, on this PC, I use Claws mail with BSfilter, but the BSfilter configuration only allows one spam directory (so I could use it to filter her mail, but all the spam would wind up in MY spam directory, where she couldn't access it to check for false-positives.

Then there's the issue of training. How could she train a filter not living on the same device where she's reading her mail.

Her spam is out of hand and I need to do something. Trying to avoid gmail for now but that might actually turn out to be a good solution.

I like Korg tuners, and I bought the CA-40 (actually I have a couple of them) because it goes low enough to tune my low B on the five-string bass.

I can imagine it would be that much worse with perfect pitch.

I wonder how "you people" deal with off-of-440 pitch situations? I regularly play with a pipe organ which is at A4=439Hz. Does that drive you nuts or do you adjust?

I have several that are 2xAA. I've never found them too heavy in use, but I don't generally travel with them. You know, many "gaming" mice come with weights in different sizes to make the mouse heavier, as some gamers prefer.

According to a certain 2009 pdf by logitech: Advanced_24_Unifying_FINAL070709.pdf

Not sure how much still applies today or if it has advanced further...

The article mentions some "bargain" brands of mice. Mouses. I have one of those Logitech Unifying receivers and since it supports multiple devices with one receiver, it has a pairing process that must be used. I've never had any cross-talk between different Logitech devices on different PCs in my house. My guess is the hack requires a more simplistic device.

And a good antenna - on my old Logitech MX Revolution I'd love if i could get 1m range!

Data point:
I use ddg in pale moon browser, and I get the same first result as you, and it works fine.

Try ff "safe mode" to see if you are running an extension or greasemonkey script that's fouling things.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and Windows apps
« on: March 02, 2016, 07:01 AM »
I had to change all icons since they are white and my FARR background is white, so it annoyed me to see "nothing".

Yes, you can see above that I went the easy route and changed my FARR background color for my screenshot.

P.S. I found this solution on the Launchy forum. They don't support ModernUI apps either.

P.P.S. I wish every forum I used had the ability to quote just the text I've highlighted. That is seriously handy.

General Software Discussion / Re: Configure Host file!
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:24 AM »
Well, if it's connecting based on the IP address the hosts file won't help at all. Also if windows has cached the DNS entry it won't check the hosts file. Fix this by running
ipconfig /flushdns

Then you maybe need to do some sniffing to see what website your program is actually connecting to. Might be an amazon cloud server or something, who knows.

Here's a method that works for creating a "real" shortcut to a metro app:

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations

Scroll to the bottom under "protocols" and note that the description column next to each of the metro app shows URL:something.
Screenshot - 2016-03-01 , 9_41_45.jpg
Create a shortcut somewhere FARR can index to "something://" (excluding quotes).
Screenshot - 2016-03-01 , 9_43_36.png
Rename the shortcut (it'll be called "New Internet Shortcut" by default.)

For example, windows 10 calculator shows URL:calculator. I create a new shortcut on my desktop pointing to calculator:// and titled "Calculator App"
Screenshot - 2016-03-01 , 9_46_39.png
The Calculator icon is used with my title, and the shortcut is found and launched successfully from FARR.
Screenshot - 2016-03-01 , 9_49_24.png
Kind of a farr cry from the index-free ease of normal farr use but if there's a metro app you use frequently it might be worth it.

I got this idea from this link that I found here.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and Windows apps
« on: March 01, 2016, 07:55 AM »
For what it's worth, I haven't found a way, elegant or otherwise, to get FARR to find or run windows-store "apps." Such as Calculator or Calendar or Mail or Edge (browser) or the ModernUI version of Skype. I ignored this problem in Windows 8 since I ignored these apps, but now that they are better integrated into the desktop I find myself using some of them sometimes.

After going through the linked "hassle" were you able to load them in FARR? Could you make old-style .lnk shortcuts to the windowsapps files?

Check out the Sony MDR-V6 Studio Monitor headset.

I have (and love) the very similar MDR-7506 headphones and I think they have the same ear pads. On mine the vinyl coating on the ear cushions started flaking off after a couple years. Got in my hair and shirt every time I wore them. So budget an extra $30 to get the Beyerdynamic EDT250V "velour" ear pads which are much more durable, and just as comfortable as the originals.

Hmm, I'm getting double notifications from DC at the moment

I did Chords 101 with no problem but Chords 102 was baffling; I just couldn't keep up. And the easiest songs just expect you to play chords that you've never "learned." I guess some out-of the-game practice is needed.

But for now I've moved it aside as I'm currently trying to learn violin (!) with my 7-year-old. If you thought listening to someone learn to play violin was painful, you should hear two people trying at once  :o

I've been trying to use Rocksmith for rhythm guitar too. (As far my background, 28 years playing piano, a bachelor's degree in trumpet, and fairly capable with a bass guitar) I'm finding it really difficult, that there's a big jump between the how-to-hold-the-guitar type of lesson and throw-you-into-a-song-with-no-chance. Also I found the fretboard was upside-down for the way my head works; I flipped it in settings.

I've been playing Rocksmith 2014 lately to improve my guitar skills- I highly recommend it!  Some people talk about it not being conducive to good guitar habits- but all I know is that I've been playing regularly daily and keeping with it- which I haven't successfully done with my other forays into the instrument, and I can feel myself getting better.  (As far as background for comparison, I'm more of a keyboard/vocals guy)

Living Room / Re: What other forums do you participate in?
« on: January 24, 2016, 07:21 PM »
Mainly music these days now that I've retooled myself and am not as into computer tech as I used to be...except for the slowly dying FOSS vision and hope for the future.

My biggies:

TalkBass.com
BassOutpost.com

I've been an "irregular" on talkbass.com, drumforum.org lumberjocks.com, SimTropolis, and lately mytractorforum.com. Separately I check classifieds but don't really participate at sawmillcreek.org, harmonycentral.com. '

I also just discovered that links with square brackets don't work in BBCode  :)

I can't help further. I found this link (https://forums.tvadd...s-2-a-818-print.html) where someone used a regex to identify the new url each time.

I don't know anything about URLSnooper, whether it could do something like that.

DC Gamer Club / Re: ShinyLoot shutting down
« on: January 08, 2016, 03:29 PM »
ShinyLoot has been pretty "dormant" for a while now.

I must say, I don't really get how Steam-key resellers make money. Places like GOG and HumbleBundle that sell DRM-Free "copies" are different, but places like GreenManGaming, GamersGate and various "bundlers" are just selling something they must have "bought" from Steam, same as I can do. I bought "Cities:Skylines" from GMG for a discount. It's available from the publisher (Paradox) or Amazon, but both are just Steam keys.

The one game I bought at ShinyLoot came with both a Steam key and a zip download.

EDIT
I've been reading more about how this economy works. Apparently as a developer, you just ask Steam for keys and they give them to you. The store (GMG, HumbleBundle, or whatever) then buys the keys from the developer and resells them. Steam makes money by (1) selling games itself and (2) providing DRM to developers. So GMG et al are not "resellers" of steam keys since they're likely getting them directly from the developer or publisher.

Instead of the end-of-life-declared WinSplit Revolution, or it's non-free successor MaxTo, I'd opt for the free, DonationCoder based, GridMove

But I think Win_Resize_Keys is none of the above, it only resizes the current window, it doesn't move&resize all windows into predefined areas.
WiinSplit/MaxTo work on a single window, different than GridMove. If I repeatedly hit (for example) Ctrl-Alt-4, the currently-active window fills the left half of the screen, left third, and left two-thirds of the screen.

My point, though, was to offer a hotkey which is apparently available, namely Ctrl-Alt-Numpad.

99
Sounds very much like WinSplit Revolution, which I found when switching from linux (where I used Compiz Grid). Both programs use Ctrl-Alt-NumPad for resizing windows.

love the look of that - how old is it?

It's a 1974 3-cylinder gas Ford 2000 (as you found). I "bought" it with a handshake this weekend but it needs some work and I'll be picking it up before I need to mow in the spring. It was really considered an "economy" tractor when it was made but it's a lot bigger (and better looking) than a modern compact utility tractor (e.g. Kubota) which would do the same small tasks we need. We picked it over something more "classic" because of the presence of the modern hitch and power take-off which allows us to use pretty much any implement, new or old.
