hey looks like martin at ghacks likes it:

(see attachment in previous post)

Hmmmmm nice to get the write-up but I wonder if he actually used it?  Afaik double-click in the Listbox does nothing.  Quite a "delay" indeed!! heh heh

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll check 'em out.

v. 1.5  Added code to prevent opening 2 instances of the cache window.

Edit: hopefully this is stabilized now.  Heres a list of changes

7479
Latest build has a minor fix, if the folder file doesn't have a number for the max folder option on the first line. It's been updated on the page.

I just wish they'd make these things as rugged as a ballpoint pen. Can't cost that much to go 1 mil thicker on the plastic can it?  Jeez!! :)

Please download v. 1.3.  It fixes a bug introduced in 1.2 that hangs the window when the folder max option is adjusted.  Minor brain cramp.  Should be good now. :)

Edit:  Updated to 1.4.  Made the window a bit taller and updated Readme file a bit.  On my machine 24 folders fits nicely without scrolling.  I think it's pretty stable now. :)

You should probably change the name - when seeing cache, I half expected some file/disk caching stuff rather than "just" a list of used folders :) (oh, how I wish somebody would make a NT version of "vramdir"...)
When I see Disk Cache I expect a disk cache. When I see folder cache, I expect a folder cache.  Sorry to disappoint. :)  'sides, then I'd have to do something more difficult with the icon.  Typing a dollar sign is easy.
I'd have opted to simply call it an MRU list, but that's just me. And after all, the name doesn't detract from it's usefulness :)

True enough. :)  I spent a lot of time on Delphi 5 XMon explorer folder monitor but the thing I didn't like about using it was having to scroll horizontally to read long paths.  I'd have to reinstall Delphi 5 to update it and I've installed that compiler too many dozens of times.  The monitor engine was in AutoIt3 anyway, so I figured I'd give the GUI a shot.

If you notice any bugs please let me know.

I like this

Thanks for putting it on the RSS feed, would have noticed it otherwise.

Thank you. I added an Up/Down in v. 1.2 to set the maximum number of folders. I notice the scrolling isn't really spiffy so an optimum number may be what fits in the window.. maybe 18 or 20 or so.

7484
thanks for sharing

You're welcome. :)

Updated to v. 1.1  On exit it writes the folder list to FolderCache.txt in the home folder.  On startup, if that txt file exists it reads the folder names in. So it should start empty only the first time or if you delete FolderCache.txt.

btw AutoIt3 form designer thing is a bit off kilter.  I changed the numbers a bit so it's at least closer to horizontal center.

General Software Discussion / FolderCache 6.3.8.1
« on: April 23, 2009, 06:04 PM »
I took the AutoIt3 engine I had for monitoring when Explorer opens a folder and just converted it to a complete application.  FolderCache.

This implementation is much simpler than others I've done. Leave it run in the system tray.  Hit Shift-PgUp to open the launch window.  The GUI is no great shakes but I made it wide to avoid the need for horizontal scrolling to see all of the folder name. It should be usable in screen res 800x600 or higher.

Right now there are no user configurable options. It's hard-wired for a max of 24 folders. There's no install needed.  To have it start with Windows just make a shortcut in the Startup folder.

(One note, the launch window is created dynamically when opened and destroyed with each close.  While it is open, the folder monitor function is paused.  No folders will be added to the cache while the launch window is open.  For this reason there is no minimize button on the window frame.  If you change your mind about opening a folder in the window, just click the close 'x' on the window frame or click the Open Selected Button with nothing selected, to close it.)

I've had my Sandisk Titanium for quite a while and I use it several times every day. So far no problems. Earlier I had Sandisk with plastic cover. That one didn't last long.

Yeah, it's tough to judge.  I hate to do trial and error when they start getting to be > $20.  The AData 2 GB I mentioned seems like the flimsiest thing imaginable but maybe I got a good one.  The little snap on cap actually snaps and doesn't fall off.  Maybe that's how you tell on that model. :)  Guess I'm doomed to buy some since all the PCs have 0 floppy disk these days, so it's the only way you can do those little emergency utility gizmos.

I ordered another of those ADatas with the rubberized bodies.  8 GB this time.  Bought it on NewEgg for $19 shipped.  Hope it's as good as the 4 GB I bought earlier.

Autohotkey comes to mind.. at least for smaller utilities.

Do you know if there are any quick and dirty toolbar or non-square or frameless window libs around for it?  I'm just trying to be as lazy as possible as I experiment with some funky lookin' windows. :)

7489
If you're familiar with Delphi, then you might try Lazarus

Thanks. I installed the 64 bit IDE and I'll mess around with it.  Right now any free 64 bit IDE is a good 64 bit IDE.  ShowMessage('Hello World!'); worked as expected to it might be fun to mess with it.

I went to install Delphi 5 for the umpteenth time today, and I just took it back off.  I'm trying to find a free Windows programming language, environment etc.. that easily creates GUIs with cool graphics, non-rectangular forms, etc..  I have VS 2008 Express but I'm looking for something, even if interpreted, can compile to a stand-alone exe wrapper or be natively compiled.

The dialog box lookin' app is just too old fashioned now.  Need something where I can do glass or skins without having to get a degree in GDI+ if you know what I mean.  Drag & drop IDE would be ideal.  Hopefully pretty conventional syntax would be good also.  I tried Perl and although I could do a lot with a few lines, 10 minutes later I almost lost my mind trying to remember how I did it!! :)

I recommend SanDisk Ultra® Titanium. It´s strong and durable according to my experience. However, not the cheapest one!  (http://sandisk.com/P..._USB_Drive_16GB.aspx).

Have a look - and good luck!

Sandisk Titanium is the one I referred to above.  The outer shell looks solid but I don't think the whole mechanism sliding back and forth does any good.  Then again, the AData one I have now may be flimsy plastic inside the rubber body!!  No way to tell how long this stuff will last until it dies.

I got the Sandisk right after they came out.  Hopefully they fixed the slide design. Or maybe I just got a lemmon. :(

I've been using the Sandisk Cruzer U3 drives for a few years and I have had no issues with them, and they don't have a cap. They slide in and out of the case. I like the U3 application as well. I have 3 4 gig Cruzers now and I am adding an 8 gig Cruzer to my arsenal real soon.

Rob

I got one of those after reading a big review in one of the PC magazines.  Worked about 3 times before the electrical connection became intermittent.  I was just able to get my data off before it died. I got one of those AData 4 GB with the rubberized body.  Don't know how sturdy it is yet.  I do know it's bootable.  I just put WinPE 2.0 with RAID drivers so I could boot my image restore program off of it.  I just ordered the 8 GB model.  I got another model AData 2 GB because it was cheap but it does feel like it came in a box of Crackerjacks.  Wicked flimsy.  It's bootable too.  For how long I don't know but it feels too cheesy to last. :)

Like most things, if you have a good experience, it's great.  If you get burned, it sucks. :)

The fact that a legal copy of Windows is expensive and licensed, not sold. Using Windows -- for me -- means agreeing to a number of increasingly harsh restrictions. For most Windows licenses, you can't keep the software when you change the hardware

My favorite gimmick for shrink-wrapped software, is the notice on the side of the box that says "by opening this package your agree to the licensing terms yadda yadda.." and then it informs you to see the license agreement inside the box!!!  Talk about a blank check!!!  Just sign here, we'll fill in the terms later!!  Don't worry, be happy!!

There is no right or wrong way of talking a language, there are only vague patterns that are accepted by all levels of the society.

Hmmmmmmm I've heard Japanese is a lot less rigid than English.  It would be interesting if someone fluent in the language could comment.

I remember seeing one of those nature shows where they supposedly had this super intelligent simian who could "talk" by using a computer.  Well, I watched the thing and now and then he seemed to "say" something sensible while other times it was just gibberish.  Turns out what the scam was is they set up the buttons on the computer so that the subjects, his name, the handlers and scientist's names, were all on the left, the verbs(what the ape wanted or how he felt, as in loves his handler etc.) were all in the middle, and the objects, were all on the right hand side.  So our hero quickly learned that if he hit a button on the left, a button in the middle, and a button on the right, he'd get a reward.

I do have to admit his grammar was perfect!!! :)

DcUpdater / Latest DcUpdater crashes in W7 7077
« on: April 20, 2009, 06:55 PM »
Tried latest FARR and DcUpdater in W7 7077 32 bit.  So FARR so good for FARR.  However, DcUpdater seems to crash every time it's run.  If I turn autocheck for updates off, FARR seems ok.

You mean "Mac" like "don't Mac on my sister" or ???

Because of .net versions uninstalling mess I needed to reinstall my entire system today. I am not sure if I have any love left for .net. I know what that "." stands for now.

The evolution of this stuff kind of reminds me of opiates. We don't want all the applications to duplicate all the code so we have dlls, then we have dll hell so we have COM, then that ain't good enough so we have .NET.. reminds me of the invention of Morphine to get people off Opium, then you have morphine addicts so you "cure" them with heroin, then methadone and on and on.   :)

Let's just all write our code in one stream of consciousness.  It will take a lot of disk space, but with no loops or function calls man with the CPU prefetch those instructions!!!
:)

I hesitate to write this because I know it won't go over well but I've got a thick skin and can take the flame.

I don't mean this as a critique at all. But, if you want to be known as educated through the proper use of the language, then you need to refrain from swear words when they are not needed (as in the thread title). I'm not a prude and I've been known to throw a few swear words out there myself, after all, I spent 28 years in the military. But, I've come to realize that swearing only served to reflect negatively on myself.

I don't go around criticizing swear words on the net but, if the thrust of this article is how to speak properly then I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the irony of using curse words in the title.

Hmmm, my comment will be tangential but when you get to "curse words" or "swears" or whatnot, then you get into the strangeness of censorship. Not that anybody should be able to post anything.  That's not what I mean.  But it's kind of amusing to me that at first explicit forbidden words, such as those considered obscene for describing parts of the body or what is done with them, are censored. So people start using euphemisms to convey the same idea. So, we must censor those also.  Eventually you get to the point where the only non-actionable description is wholly medical.  This brings you to the position that all the interest in the innately interesting facets of life, is utterly squeezed out leaving an anhydrous powder that's totally unpalatable.  Kinda' like how Playboy airbrushes the pics to the point where the women aren't really people but porcelain figurines.  Might as well take a shower with a raincoat on. :)

Just an observation. :)

Living Room / Re: OS Re-install Tips?
« on: April 19, 2009, 05:38 PM »
The way i do is that , I never install any application I use under the "program files". That way I know which programs need reinstall or basic copying. Before fresh install I make a copy of all the profiles, windows and program folders.

Usually stuff that doesn't need the Registry and runs in a self-contained exe or all inside a folder I'll put under a Utils folder.  Even after a Custom install I can run most of them just by dragging shorcuts.  I have Utils in the Path so command line apps I can run right away.
