Man of Steel.
My favorite Superman movie so far.  In this case the cliche "action packed" actually applies.  :D

I loved it too, but it appears that the die hard fans don't like it.

Heh.  One thing that bugs me about Superman is how can he claim to be "Super Intelligent" when he flies around with a cape creating immense drag?  That thing should only be worn around the house like a smoking jacket.  :D

Perhaps he flies so fast that the drag is insignificant to him getting where he needs to go? :P

Could be he earns Sky Miles.  Or perhaps the S is really a corporate logo and he gets Promotional Consideration?

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Explorer crashing
« on: December 14, 2017, 08:46 AM »
Will try that, thanks.

There are forums for Vista, W7, and W8 by the same people who do the Ten forums and the tutorial searches interlink.  The actual tutorial may be on one of the older forums since this is a long time Explorer quirk.  I tried to search but I am hamstrung without a Windows PC.  I like Android but some stuff I have not adapted to yet.  :D

One thing that can cause Explorer to crash is a corrupt context menu handler.  There is a way to disable them all.  Then if Explorer does not crash you know it is likely the issue.  It then becomes a process of elimination.  I forget how to disable them but I know there is a tutorial on www.tenforums.com that gives step by step how to proceed.

Kung Faux

I do not know where to watch them.  Amazon Prime has them listed but marked unavailable in my area.  If you have not seen them it is worth the time.  Especially if you like Shaw Brothers classic kung fu flicks.

Three Days of the Condor

Excellent flick.  I thought Max Von Sydow stole the show.  Also the book it is based on, Five Days of the Condor, is a good read.  They chopped off two days to make the film move along faster I suppose.   :P

Happpy Thanksgiving

It looks like a sunny nice day is what is on here in Miami for today.  Unfortunately when living outside the fewer things open the fewer resources available during hollidays and school rrecesses.  But no rain is always a cheer  up.

I should be able to Youtube segments of the NFL games later.  So something to do there.  I really mis having access to a good desktop PC.  Even forum participation is a chore on these little device.  Programming is not feasible so I busy myself watching sitcoms and movies on stream services cheap enough for me to afford.

The saving grace is public libraries are open this Saturday.  Enough of a boost to make it to Monday.

The Celtics win streak came to an end here last night.  Funny but have never seen an NBA game live that was not played in the old Boston Garden.  One of these days I will have to see about ending that streak.

Happy Holliday everyone,   :P

A video by Luca Stricagnoli:

I suspect he cheats.  He has four arms and photoshops two of them out.  :D

Nice vid.

Love and Teleportation

A bit predictable.  But still an enjoyable low budget flick.  One suggestion..  do not put your entire SnapOn tool set in the device.  :D

Non-Windows Software / Re: Google Play Store Android updates not new
« on: October 20, 2017, 11:58 AM »
I have two apps which update outside of the Play store or via the Play store, depends which way happens first.

I suppose if something similar is happening the Play store could be reporting an update available even though the app has already self-updated but the Google update date will be out of date.

Also it is likely the testing is done with auto update enabled.  Thanks for the replies.

I'd clear out the cache on the phones/tablets and see if the problem persists.

I regularly use All In One Cleaner, as in multiple times per day.  Somehow the store must be getting wrong info.  I wonder if it gets confused by multiple devices?  One would think not but who knows?  I have 2 Marshmallow and one Lollipop device.  Maybe this us an excuse to get a new 7" tablet with Marshmallow?  Anyone know if Marshmallow boots faster than the same device running Lollipop?  I like the 7" tablet with keyboard case but it is a real dog coming up on a cold boot.

Have you by any chance installed apps manually, as in downloaded the .apk? I've had this happen when I've updated apps by downloading the latest directly from the authors (mainly on xda forums).

Only those that are not available from the play store.

It hasn't happened to me; couple of phones, couple of tablets

Just think of it as Google wanting to make you feel special.

Hmm, somehow I can hear "Church Lady" saying that on Saturday Night Live.   8)

Are you checking the version number both before and after "updating"? I ask because I have come across places that sometimes show your current version in the store until after you update.

Well, it still shows the current version after updating, but updating changes the current version. :P

But the real important detail is that all Android apps have a release/build version code that must be higher than the previous one for the Play Store to accept it as an update. This number can be different than the publicly displayed version number. Make sure you're comparing the correct number when checking for updates.

That is interesting.  It seems like something weird is happening because an App I updated yesterday will be in the update list today with the Last Updated date a week or more old.  I am waiting to see Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock make an appearance.  ;)

Thanks for the info

Non-Windows Software / Google Play Store Android updates not new
« on: October 17, 2017, 01:48 PM »
I keep running into this where I go to Google Play Store and it shows Updates available under My Apps and Games.  But often I check the version and it is the same as the one already installed.  I have two Android tablets and a phone and the issue happens across all the devices.  Kind of weird.

Has anyone run into this?  It is kind of a time sink to check the version number before installs.  I do not use Auto Update because I like to pick what to update depending on the What Is New info.

The Mote in Gods Eye was the book I remember most.  Byte was part of the good old days when Computer and Programming magazines were in the book stores.  It seems like another century is sneaking up on me way too fast.

In the morning he puts the charged batteries in his pocket.  In the evening he puts the spent ones on the induction charger.

Sounds like he needs a phone that's better at battery management.

He's running multiple phones.  Windows, IPhone and Android based.  Sort of like Leo La Porte on a smaller scale.  :)

Having a few spare, charged batteries available when I travel is a real plus.  I can go longer without having the phone tethered to a wall socket.
Actually for that it would seem to be far easier, cheaper, and more flexible to simply buy one of the many large-capacity usb battery pack chargers.
These can charge any device that charges over usb (all mobile phones made in the last decade it seems), many times over.

I have one of these devices, and it can charge/power a phone, tablet, etc. as well as jump start a car, be used as a flashlight, etc.

One of my Computer Repair professors is very into phones.  He has an induction charger.  In the morning he puts the charged batteries in his pocket.  In the evening he puts the spent ones on the induction charger.  I guess he is quite adept at shutting down his phone when the battery is low and snapping off the back.  The removed battery goes into the jacket pocket designated for the discharged ones. It may seem like overkill but in his defense he likes to learn to do all function with all phones to keep up to date.

In the mid 1980s I worked for too short a time with this gentleman:
https://patents.just.../inventor/ethan-hoag

All I could find on search was patent info.  No personal info.  He did CO2 Laser Research.  I assisted as an Electromechanical Tech.  I enjoyed that time very much.  In addition to intelligence and competence he had a sense of humor.  I use past tense because I believe he was close to 70 when I worked with him.

If he was not a "Scientist" he was close enough for the girls I know.  :)

Edit:  On earlier searches I got about a dozen hits for CO2 Laser related patents.  The link above is just the first.

Hay Miles glad you made it! I had a thread started looking for you before the storm hit ... But I like the title of yours better..

Thanks.  I would post more but even with the included keyboard posting with a tablet feels a bit uncertain.  Ah to have a desktop PC with a desk under it again is my dream.  :)

Thanks for asking about me.  I had electric and WiFi the whole time.  My butt is sore from sitting on tile for days.  I am happy the trains and associated elevators/escalators are getting back to normal. Things would be much simpler if I could rent storage nearby.  For it to do me any good it has to be accessible every day and close by.  I am not sure they will rent without a state ID though.  Makes it a struggle when it should nit have to be.

My hope is Maria will hook NW and go out to sea.

Glad you guys survived in style.  :)
