Living Room / SmartPhone battery "hot swap" and charge info
« on: September 17, 2018, 02:26 PM »
I have a couple of smart phone battery questions.  A link to an explanation is fine in each case as my searches have not stumbled upon any concise explanations:

1) Smart phone "hot swap" - what exactly it gains you.  Do you have to shut the phone down to swap etc.?

2) Wireless charging.  Can you lay batteries on a charge plate or do they have to be inside a phone or other gizmo that provides a charging circuit?

I am getting by for the moment with a vanilla Alcatel smart phone but I may be tempted to buy something more advanced in the future.  I am curious about these features but web articles I find seem to assume the reader already knows the details.

@anandcoral: Maybe you forgot to turn on the brilliant LED flashing white and red lights that all husbands are obliged to wear on the tops of their heads (white light over the forehead, red on the back of the head).
For convenience, I have my lights affixed to my bicycle helmet, which I wear whenever I go out, day or night. I also have a GPS in the helmet, but my wife prefers to rely on the lights as they are less technical, and she finds it easier to look out the window of our 7th-floor apartment to see if I am travelling down the road.
Unfortunately, I absentmindedly had my helmet on back-to-front the other night. My wife couldn't tell whether I was coming or going.

Sounds like the perfect companion to Outrage Express which bccs all your incoming and outgoing email to your better half.   ;)

There is a convoluted work around to enable the hidden admin account - you can then login as admin and reset local passwords on other users. I have used this method to help clients but don't want to publish the details here - though a quick google search will help ;-)

Not sure there is a solution if you use an MS account to login other than their password reset tools online.

Speaking of old times, remember those scifi paperbacks with two novels and a book cover on each side?

No!  I'm in the UK, and that may be why.  :(  Cover art was a problem for me in itself.  I never bought, say, Analog as a teenager, worried I think about the flak I might get others seeing the lurid covers...  I must have missed out on a lot of good stuff.

Here is one of the double paperbacks I had:

I remembered the title "Envoy to the Dog Star."

Not computer related but it makes me think of television promos that pimp the show you are currently watching.  Are they deliberately annoying or are these promos inserted by brain dead algorithms?  Somehow I suspect the former.    Grrrrr.

That was a very interesting read -- read his wikipedia page also. Sounded like quite a character...

What a coincidence.  I just watched A Boy and His Dog movie with Don Johnson again.  It was based on an Ellison story.

So my question is: How does FireFox render a Font while Delphi cant (or Browsers Opera/IE)
That would be because webpages can provide the font by hosting it somewhere and giving the path to download it from via .css : see https://www.w3school...r_font-face_rule.asp

Now there probably is a way to embed the font in your application too, as I remember there was a way to do it for graphic modes with Turbo Pascal back then.

I stopped coding with Delphi at version 5 Pro.  But I think it must still be possible to create a "resource only" DLL with fonts, bitmaps, strings etc. and load it when the program runs.  The OP may have to check with the font maker if it is OK to redistribute the fonts in a DLL with the program.

Another fun novella by Mark Clifton:

If you have problems with authority figures I suspect you will enjoy his stories.  Written in early sixties but really applies in the post 9/11 USA.

Thanak goodness you were able to weed out the confusion!

Speaking of weed, I watched Up in Smoke again last week.  It is still funny after all these years.  :)

Why are you watching a current history of the US?

Ok, it may be only a current history but it is the only history we've got.  Or is that war?  I get confused.  :D

With so many very capable video players available for free, who would want this player? Most of these free players are skinnable, meaning thatif you don't like the look, you (or by using the skin from someone else) can alter that.

I'm not saying this is a bad player or anything, I just fail to see its value.

Speaking of free media players, I just tried the VLC for Android on my tablet.  Works fine for mp4 playback.  That is the only format I have tried on Android so far.  :)

You need to clarify your USB ports, USB 3.1 has to do with signalling protocol.
USB 3.1 Gen 1 is the same as the old 3.0 (5Gbps).
USB 3.1 Gen 2 doubles it to 10Gbps.
Ports can look like the usual Type A except for the colour of plastic, (but only if the manufacturer follows the standard).

Then you have Type C which is a physical port type, the new reversible connector, (it's possible to  have USB 2.0 Type C ports).

So I think you might mean:
USB 3.1 Gen 1 (or 2) Type A (same as the USB 3.0)
USB 3.1 Gen 1 (or 2) Type C

The Type C will most likely have the Power Delivery standard and be used for charging it.

Thanks for the clarification.  What I am hoping to do is continue using my USB 3.0 and 2.0 sticks while buying one of the faster 3.1 to try it out  I was looking at an Asus that had a 3.1 C connector with the higher speed.  The main downer was the 8GB was only DDR 3.

I've bought laptops from MS before, and the cool thing about them is they are the same as from the manufacturer, but a signature edition, meaning they're clean of all of the junk that the manufacturer's install.  They've been great in my experience.

Good to know.  One thing I totally hate is wasting time on crapware removal.  :)

Living Room / W10 Laptop wish list
« on: May 08, 2018, 12:12 PM »
I am looking for a Windows 10 Laptop that comes close to the following wish list:

Priced in the $700 ballpark

Screen size 13.3 inches minimum, full HD

8 GB DDR4 Ram minimum

256 GB SSD minimum

Has both USB 3.0 AND 3.1 ports

CPU capable of supporting light to moderate programming environments

Light and compact

In addition to programming I would use it for entertainment(e.g. video streaming)

I would appreciate suggestions since my Laptop knowledge and experience is meager.  :)

The other consideration would be brick and mortar availability.  I don't want to have to return a lemon via UPS.

My question is, is it possible and easy for them to monitor, not the webpages visited (that's easy), but the text typed and submitted in webpages like dating websites and/or mobile apps, like Whisper, Chat apps, Dating apps, etc?

Absolutely, it is possible.  Whether they do, or care, is another question.

I think if you are typing over an https connection via a browser you may have some protection.  It must be better than nothing since so many sites provide https nowadays.  It would be interesting to find out more but afaik stuff between your computer and the WiFi modem is "in the clear" unless what you are typing into encrypts it.

The Time Axis

An entertaining short SciFi novel.  One nice thing about the way it is written is that rather than delving into microscopic techno detail the descriptions of future tech are sufficiently vague that the plot should not seem dated.  A hundred years from now it should still be a good read.

btw I an bot worried about sharing the music files.  I just want to avoid filling in the same songs over and over.  Besides SongFlip is all royalty free or something like that.

I am just looking to avoid making the same playlist manually over and over.  Some nice Ambient and other stuff on SongFlip but the App itself is like an Easter Egg Hunt.  Also I found if I have no WiFi it will download in the background using my phone data.  But if I have WiFi I know no way to force it to download.  Seems like it expects you to have a data unlimited plan on your phones.
