Firefox 42.0 stable is out - only Softpedia shows it though.  I have just updated.  The item in the change log that caught my eye is better password management.

I just brought it up out of the install so no impressions yet other than it runs.  :)

General Software Discussion / Sleipnir Browser for Laptop lovers?
« on: October 29, 2015, 01:19 PM »
I noticed Sleipnir Browser today.  What caught my eye was stuff on the home page about the rendering producing easy to read text.  Since blurry text in browsers is a constant issue with my Toshiba Laptop I tried out the portable version.

I did change the fonts to the ones I use in Firefox.  I must say it does look as though I can read smaller fonts in this browser.  The text seems a tad less blurry.

I thought I would post since I see many Laptop users searching for a way to avoid the blurs.

The browser is a chrome variant.

I just purchased RollbackRX Pro at a 25% discount using this link:
https://horizondatas...m/281/purl-wdtrpromo

I am in Florida and no sales tax was charged.  $51.75

Important Note:  RollbackRX does not support Trim.  If you are looking for a snapshot utility for an SSD try another product.  I have a spinner and I doubt I will update to an SSD any time soon.  So for me it is worth the $51.75.

Note that there is no version number shown on the promo download but I checked with the Rollback RX Pro forum and was told it is a license for v. 10.x and will activate the latest v. 10.4.  What I did was download the 30 day trial, made sure it installed ok and did a snapshot restore as test.  All as expected.  The demo activated with the provided license key(requires reboot as Rollback does the activation stuff beneath Windows to outsmart cracks.) I have been using the Home free version for a couple of weeks so I am confident I have figured out how to use the utility(after reading the forums for it.)

Speaking of the free version, it may be downloaded here:
http://www.horizonda...roductId=40#Features

Home works fine on my Laptop but it is limited to 7 snapshots.  With the baseline made during installation that leaves only 6 to play with.

Note that before deciding if you want to use this software you should know that the recommended method of imaging your system with programs like Macrium Reflect is to save your system image before installing Rollback.  If you make an image with Rollback installed, then re3store it, the link in the MBR will try to call non-existent Rollback code.  IOW, your system will not boot.  Also defrag messes up the snapshots.  If you wish to defrag with Rollback installed it is recommended to consolidate the baseline snapshot as soon as the defrag completes.

Windows System Restore does not work on my Laptop.  So for me it is good to have RollbackRX as a replacement.  Having played around with the Home version for a couple of weeks I have found that I can uninstall Rollback, defrag my system, make a Macrium incremental backup to establish a new Macrium image baseline, then install Rollback again, in about an hour.  To just defrag my system requires consolidating the baseline after defrag which takes a few minutes and a reboot.

The alternative image backup is to use their Drive Cloner RX product.  This will back up the snapshots with Rollback installed, but only  if you do a full backup image.

If you decide to try RollbackRX please read through their forums first.  From what I read just winging it and defragging your HD without then consolidating the Rollback baseline snapshot is a quirk way to end up with a scrambled system that may not boot or may require restoring your backup image or, lacking that you may get stuck doing a repair install or at least an MBR fix.

I think it can be a valuable utility for spinners especially if System Restore is not reliable on your system.

Edit:  You can read the product page to comapre Home vs Pro but the major enhancement in Pro is a Custom Install option to support multi-boot or just partitioned drives.  Home will snapshot drive C: .During Custom Installation you are presented with a check list of partitions you wish to include in the snapshots.

Edit2:  I could not find any indication how long the 25% discount will be in effect.  All I can say is it worked today.  :)

Edit3:  The forums for this software may be found here:
http://community.hor...zondatasys.com/forum

Edit4:  One last bit of info.  I made cursory test of the bootup menu.  I hit the Home key when  prompted on boot and made a snapshot, and on another boot, I restored a snapshot.  It all seems to have gone well.  It is a relief to have a restore capability without having to plug in my USB stick.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Lazesoft Recovery Suite Pro 4.1 [gotd]

Lazesoft Recovery Suite Pro 4.1

at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

I don't have a guinea pig machine to test the software with.  But I did make a bootable USB stick with the software.  I targeted Windows 8.0 x64 when making the stick.  It successfully booted and displayed the recovery suite without having to set my BIOS to CSM mode.  It used WinPE 8 to make the stick.  The only quirk I noticed was it did not get the screen res right.  It looked like it used a 4:3 resolution instead of the 16:9 of the Laptop.  But it came up and responded when I hit the Reboot Button in the suite.

If you do not have a recovery boot disc/usb it may be worth getting as it claims boot failure recovery, unformat and password blanking features.  So if a family member gives you an old Laptop or desktop PC but they can't remember their password you should be able to use it with this.

Apparently it also has the option to create a Linux based boot cd/stick.

If anyone has an expendable PC perhaps they will give it a test drive?   :)

The entire USB stick prep with WinPE download took about 15 minutes.
So far only Macrium Reflect and this program have been able to create a boot stick that did not require me to enable CSM mode.  That it does that correctly is a good sign.

General Software Discussion / ToolWiz Time Machine anyone using it?
« on: October 10, 2015, 10:12 AM »
I am reading a forum from when ToolWiz Time Machine was in beta.  The reaction of most of the people trying it was very positive.  Since my Restore Points almost never work I was thinking of using Time Machine in tandem with Macrium Reflect.

Also I think it may have embedded the ToolWiz Time Freeze functionality.  Sounds like a cool freeware.  But I am fishing for horror stories before jumping in the pool.  :)

I don't see any way to get into Preferences if that is where this is controlled.  When I quote a post I get Quick Reply with no way to switch to the whole enchilada.

Edit:  Also I see no way to upload attachments or do much of anything.  If I click Quick Reply it just hides the window.  It does not give me an option to use the full BBS Edit thingie.

With hundreds of apps it is way too much hassle to right click each tile to pin/unpin.  Anyone know of a free Windows 8.x start screen utility to manipulate such things easily?

At this point I got fed up and used a command line to remove them all.  But right clicking items to pin from All Apps does not work.  The tiles do not show up in the start screen.  I just want to have maybe a dozen there so they are easy to find.  Mostly desktop programs to be honest.  Stuff like ShadowExplorer,  Belarc Advisor etc..  The way it is now I have to hunt down the exe in the install folder and use Pin to Start from the Context Menu.  Arrrggghhh!!   Heh heh

General Software Discussion / Cyberfox / Firefox updated to 41.0x
« on: September 23, 2015, 08:31 AM »
Firefox stable updated to 41.0

Cyberfox stable updated to 41.01

With Cyberfox in Help About check for updates it will bring you to the page for download without auto doing anything. At least that is how it goes for me.  Perhaps I have Autoupdate disabled.  :)

In Firefox I get the installer and run it rather than using the updater.  The Mozilla page has that installer stub.  I prefer the whole installer.  Got mine here:

Living Room / I Hate IHeartRadio
« on: September 20, 2015, 06:04 PM »
Is it just me or is it set up deliberately so that it is impossible to just directly enter a radio station's call letters and listen to it via IHeartRadio.? Because in 1/2 dozen attempts several hours long each, across several years I have never figured out how.

I am talking about IHR affiliated stations.  Not just entering any old call letters.  In fact I have never found an input for the call letters.  They make you scroll through endless pages of everything but what you want to hear.

Living Room / Jaco Pastorius Documentary
« on: September 20, 2015, 08:45 AM »
I watched this documentary yesterday.  It is a real shame Jaco got dropped into the meat grinder of success.  I knew he was "address deprived" after his fall from grace.  But I didn't know all the gory details.  I only saw him perform once live.  It was at the Berkley Performance Center in Boston.  I never saw anyone before or since do the stuff he did solo between sets.  It was Weather Report touring in support of the Heavy Weather album.

The strange thing is, the show was sold out.  I went to see Al Dimeola at a club nearby and headed to the performance center just because it was within easy walking distance.I had never been there before and followed a woman who was headed into the place.  It turns out she went into the entrance for the employees and talent.  I guess the guys watching the entrance assumed I belonged there because I walked in like I owned the place, not knowing what I was doing.  To add to the serendipity, two people did not show up and I slid into one of the open seats.  I am glad that happened otherwise I never would have witnessed this genius.  Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter are not boiled spinach either.  But Jaco was from some oher planet.

Living Room / Quirky Asian Movies
« on: September 20, 2015, 06:02 AM »
I am thinking along the lines of "quirky" feature length Asian movies but I suppose funny shorts are not forbidden in this thread.  Speaking of funny shorts in a feature length film, my first nominee is Big Man Japan.

My second nomination is anything directed by Sabu

Thirdly I recommend The Bird People of China

Edit: Yet another fun Yakuza flick, Yakuza Demon

General Software Discussion / Slimjet updated to 10.0.3.0
« on: September 17, 2015, 12:31 PM »
http://www.slimjet.com/en/

Slimjet updated to 5.0.4.0.  Both installer and portable versions are available.  I am using the 32 bit portable.  It seems to run without anything very weird happening.  I have not tried the x64 build(s).

I unpacked the new 5.x release over my 4.x version.  It seems not to have scrambled my bookmarks, settings or extensions.  Also 5.x has a couple of new features you may read about on the home page.

I updated my Laptop to the late3st drivers since it has had blurry text since day one.  Now it is even worse.  It seems the more I try to adjust it with Catalyst Control Center the worse it gets.  I tried "reset to factory defaults" and that was no improvement.

With the old driver at least video looked good.  Now video seems to have too much brightness.  Of course no matter how I calibrate color, brightness, contrast, gamma, there is no improvement.

Here's a screen shot to show how crappy text looks in any browser.

Found Deals and Discounts / Shadow Defender [free]

Shadow Defender being given away free here:
http://sharewareonsa...shadow-defender-sale

It is similar to ToolWiz TimeFreeze except it has an option to keep changes(such as newly installed programs) made while in Shadow Mode.  TimeFreeze used to have this same option but they removed it  I suspect there were complications that caused them to remove the option rather than the bugs in it.  But that is just my conjecture.

About a day and 13 hours left to get the software.

General Software Discussion / Weird Firefox hangs since 40.x?
« on: August 20, 2015, 02:45 PM »
Is anyone else on Windows getting weird FF hangs since 40.x?  I backed off from 40.02 to 40.0.  Still getting spinning circles in tabs and weird hangs.  Think I am going back to 39.03.  That was more stable if I remember rightly.

Giveaway for Ultimate Zip 7.0.

I have been using 7-zip and am happy with it.  But I used UltimateZip back in the days of version 3.0.  I liked it better than WinZip.  It claims a fully portable mode where you can run from a USB stick.  I haven't really investigated.  All I can say for now is that the download, setuo and registration went without a problem.

If I check for update in FF 39.03 it says FF is up to date.  Mozilla.org shows no FF 40.0 stable.  But Snapfiles and Softpedia do.  It gets weirder all the time.

Edit:  Just checked Mozilla again.  Now it has 40.0 for download.  How can they get beat at their own game?  Seems pretty strange.  Check for update is still 40.0 unaware.
