Find And Run Robot / Re: Google Desktop 3 - FARRified
« on: March 17, 2006, 03:11 PM »
I've had trouble getting this to work since installing GDS3, but finally worked out this morning that the hotkey was being stolen by HotKeys.  So I've (for the moment at least) switched of HotKeys in order to play with the Quick Search Box.  I don't find it's nearly as good as FARR for program-launching, but I love being able to search for text from anywhere at all.

Thank you!  I also had the incorrect value - I understand why, and it comes down to me not reading the instructions (as so often!).  Anyway, in case there are any other ZD7010EA users out there using HotKeys, here's the correct script:

hotkey,SC12E,down
hotkey,SC130,up
hotkey,SC120,mute
return

down:
Send,#{PgDn}
return

up:
Send,#{PgUp}
return

mute:
send,#{End}
return

Thanks so much, jgpaiva!

I am extremely stupid, but I can't work this out...  I think I have understood that I need to have somehow got AHK to understand that when the particular hardware button is pressed, it should map that keypress to the key combination to decrease, increase, or mute the volume (Win+PgDn, Win+PgUp, Win+End respectively) - so I'm not trying to make it increase (or whatever) the volume, but just to simulate the keypress.  But I don't understand the syntax, and it's taking me ages of trying different combinations to get it...  Can someone tell me?

This is what I've got - but it doesn't work! - where am I going wrong?

SC174::Send #&{PgDn}
SC175::Send #&{PgUp}
Return

Okay, I've got a key value for the hardware vol down: 174, and 175 for the hardware vol up.  That works fine for making an increment in the volume setting - but what I want to do is to link that to what happens when I hold down WinKey+PgDn (volume down) or WinKey+PgUp (volume up), which is definied by the Qliner HotKeys volume module.

I'm certain this is very simple...  But I don't understand it!

I've just been playing with it, and it certainly seems that the hardware keys can be mapped - but I don't understand how to link that input to the volume module in HotKeys...

I really like the on-screen volume display that's available through HotKeys (http://www.qliner.com/hotkeys/), but I haven't managed to map it to the volume control keys on my laptop keyboard - could I do this with AHK?

There was very good posting about Google's strategy on the Signal Vs. Noise blog (which is written by 37 Signals, the people behind BackPack and its associated Web 2.0 apps) - take a look: http://37signals.com...of_writely_means.php

Living Room / Re: Partitioning hard drive - any point?
« on: March 15, 2006, 05:12 AM »
Thanks again, Carol.

The drive is 250gb, and I'm using it for:

1) storing my iTunes library and photographs, files that I don't need access to all the time, so have opted to store on the external drive in order to free some space on my laptops internal drive
2) storing my backups - drive images created with TrueImage, and incremental backups made with Genie Backup Manager

What I am thinking of is creating a separate partition for the backups.  From what you've said, I'm uncertain whether there's much point in doing this?

I just read your post about your bad experience, Carol!  That sounded awful...  Glad you recovered, though.  Do you think it is a good idea for me to partition my external drive?  Maybe I needn't bother...

Reawakening this old thread: I want to partition my big external hard drive, so that I can keep my backups separately from other files I am storing on the drive.  Is this a good idea?  And does anyone know if the common disk partitioning tools can do this?  I tried with the free PartitionLogic, but that didn't see the drive (it runs from its own OS, so I probably need to mount the drive somehow).

I bought Acronis TrueImage last night, and they immediately sent me a coupon for any of their other products.  (The coupon says it gives a 20% discount, but it actually appears to give 40%; it also says I am welcome to pass it on to friends, so if you're looking to buy from them in the next week, drop me a line.)  What I'm wondering is whether it's worth my buying Disk Director for $29.99 - I see it's been listed as the best partitioning software elsewhere on the forum...  Can anybody advise?

I have used gmail for at least a year, back when it was by invitation only, and I've loved it always.  I've used it via POP, with Outlook to start with, and then with The Bat! for the past six or seven months.  However, I have spent the past month living in my browser (so to speak), relying only on gmail's web access for my email (and RememberTheMilk for my to-dos, and 30boxes for my calendar).  While I will definitely continue with RTM and 30b, I am going back to The Bat! for email.  As much as I like the gmail interface for on-the-go emailing while travelling, etc., I find that for me having an email client is necessary.  But I love the fact that gmail keeps all my mail, so it's so easy to access things when I'm using some other computer.  I find this combination to be my best working solution...

I have used PrimoPDF for a year or two, and it's dead simple and efficient.  I like it.  Tempted by some of the other tools mentioned here, since I'm just needing to reinstall on my newly formatted machine, but I think I'm going to go with what I know...  PrimoPDF.

Wait!  I take that back - that was the obvious bit, wasn't it.  Dang, and I felt proud for just a moment    :tellme:

Okay, I've done it.  I followed Gina's guidelines over here at Lifehacker:
http://www.lifehacke...m-scratch-157578.php and everything went amazingly straightforwardly.

Though I've followed the advice of creating a separate partition for my documents etc and OS/program files, I've never quite believed that this was useful: it certainly is!  I didn't realise I would only have to reformat the OS/program files partition, so my data was perfectly untouched.  I made an image of the data partition on my snazzy new 250gb Lacie drive, and for good measure dragged-and-dropped it there also.

Now, with a clear system, I am slowly working through the Belarc Advisor system profile and reinstalling the programs I elected to keep - less that half!  I am installing each program with Total Uninstall, and I intend to use it every time I install anything, so that I can keep things as clean as possible.  Even with this very select group of chosen programs for installation, I am finding that I want to dump some things - for instance, although I have re-installed WindowBlinds 5, a short search of available themes for it has left me very disappointed, so I am using the (to my eye) beautiful MS Royal theme.

As I expected, even though I had carefully prepared for this over a few days, I found in the end that I did miss one important thing: my Roboform data, which I thought was in the Documents partition, but must have been in C;/Documents and Settings/etc.  That's a bit of a pain, but I will survive it.

What is really unexpected is the difference in operating temperature!  I use Speedfan to monitor HD and system temp., and it has fallen significantly since I reinstalled.  About two months ago, when my system repeatedly fell-over while playing Civilization IV, as well as constantly making a deafening noise, I took out the heat-sink and cleaned everything up, removing about a cats-worth of hair and muck from the fans and filters.  At that point, it was running at 70-80 degrees C.  I put everything back together, and since then it has run at about 48 degrees C, climbing over the past few weeks to 51-53 degees.  Today, completely clean and only partially reinstalled, it's idling at 31 degrees as I type!

Thanks for suggestions and support on my brief odyseey into Reinstall Land.

I've been using this for a few weeks - following a post on Lifehacker - and it's great!

Thanks, jdd.  Alright, I'm set - have backed up drivers and ordered by external ard drive...  Now I'm just after some free/open source drive imaging software - I've heard of DriveImage, but really don't know the territory here.  I've read the backup guide here, but there's nothing mentioned there - anybody got suggestions?

I tracked down the program I saw mentioned somewhere - thought it was Lifehacker or Downloadsquad, but neither of them has discussed it.  It is DriveImageXML (http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm) - looks okay, but does anyone have experience of using it?

I think I am going to have to buy an external harddrive - the cheapest I've found is around £80 for a Lacie 250gb, which seems a pretty good deal.

I think I read something on Lifehacker about a free disk imaging program, but I can't find it there now - does anyone know what it might have been?

I reinstalled Win Me on a computer a few months back, and the difference was amazing!  So on one hand I am looking forward to the improvements, but I know it'll take the better part of a day...

General Software Discussion / Driver backup
« on: March 07, 2006, 04:01 PM »
I am coming around to accepting that I probably am going to have to reinstall Windows  :(, something I have avoided doing for ages, but there seem to be just too many little things broken right now, and I want a clean start.  However, I'm worried about drivers and updates and having to spend hour after hour searching for the most current versions.  Can anyone recommend a program for cataloguing current drivers etc?  I use Belarc Advisor, and that seems very good indeed, but it doesn't allow you to actually backup what it catalogues, so if there is something that can directly backup to CD, that would be excellent.

Turns out there is a DirInfo.dll in the Diskview folder...

Yup.  I did.  I think.  I spoke too soon (again) - Desktop worked fine, so I carried on with things...  But then when I tried to reenable some of the autostarts I had disabled to try work it all out, I had to copy a shortcut into my Startup folder, and whizzo there's the same old error message.  So went back to SheelExView and disabled all and problem was gone.  Looked more closely and saw a few Diskview context menu files, so disabled them and problem is fixed.

Now I really like Diskview, but if it's prone to this kind of behaviour...  I will now scour system of Diskview, try reinstalling, and see what happens.

Mouser, you da Man!  Yup, searched, downloaded ShellExView, disable all - problem gone.  Oddly, reenabled all, problem still gone.

And I will check out Blackbox, thanks jgpaiva...

I decided to take advantage of the Directory Opus discount last night (wow!), and so I have directories functioning again via DO, but if I right-click on the desktop, I get the same error message I reported yesterday, and have to restart Explorer...  Hmmm.  I'm pretty stuck with this one, and contemplating reinstalling Windows - something I have always resisted.  It doesn't seem anyone here knows of this problem...

Win XP - and I think the only one would be Diskview.  Come to think of it, I did also install NetJaxer (http://www.netjaxer.com/) earlier in the week, and I think that works alongside/within Explorer.  I should say that uninstalling Diskview did seem to fix it, and then I decided to try reinstalling Diskview, and now I think I'm stuck with a partial installation, but I can't get to Explorer to tell what's half-installed...

Skrommel, your version works perfectly for me, though it was a bit jumpy on Fade Speed 1 - when I set 2, it's perfectly smooth.  Also, it doesn't have the problem with WallpaperMaster that AlphaXP Lite or Cpilot's version had.  Thanks very much to both of you!
