Besides the bibliography side, what could you suggest to organize the notes and note-taking process?

URLWolf's suggestion is good, and is what I used to do in my index-card-note-taking days, but I'd also like to number the notes (I like to see the sequence) and the tag words.

What else do you suggest?

Hello! Please excuse my lengthy post, but I hope I express myself clearly!

THE IDEA
I was looking for a good software that would help me with my research, but I haven't quite found what I needed. Doing research, you take a lot of notes, and we all know that it is important to cite our works. I was looking for something that would help me organize my notes and help me create my works cited or bibliography page.

The only freeware I found is Scholar's Aid Lite, but it has a lot of extra things which I find not necessary and a lot of important features which I find imperative. I was looking for something essential, which could be useful both for the scholar and for the general high school student preparing a research project or thesis.

Here's what I was looking for in the "ideal" scholarly research software, which I've divided into two sections (taking notes and compiling the bibliography):

Note-taking
My idea takes off of something like Biblio2 <http://www.scholarsoft.com/biblio2.htm> (just looking at the GUI you can tell it's an older prog and hasn't been maintained for years) but with some other functions (tagging, portability etc): I read a book (chapter, article, webpage, etc) and I can input various notes to create a tree outline of the text (like i'd do with Keynote or similar). Each note is tied to its reference, which I input following bibliographical standards (MLA or APA are the most famous). So I'll have the head of the list being the reference, and each note hierarchically listed below, each of which includes the page off of which I took the note.

Each note should be distinguished (by color/icon?) as a quote, a summary, or an idea and have a title and a "body" (like in Biblio) but some other "types" could be glossary, images, and general. Each note should have the possibility of having given tags and linking to other notes for easy cross-referencing and searching (which is the key here and which is what I haven't found in Biblio). I also think it would be great to have the possibility of having hotkeys to create new notes, etc.

When I've finished creating an outline of each book, article, webpage or whatever, I should be able to export it or save it as an RTF or DOC. I should also be able to move around the notes so I can export or print my own mental maps using various notes from various lists (that is, using any note from any book or article). In this case the bibliographical reference should travel with the note and I should have the option of also exporting the reference with the page number at the end (see below).

Compiling your bibliography
The second part of the project should be to help me compile the bibliography. There are many websites out there that will help in formatting the bibliography using MLA or APA standards (like http://www.studentabc.com/builder and http://citationmachine.net/) and even a great freeware (http://www.bibliosca...om/biblioexpress.htm). It would be excellent to incorporate something like this within this program to make it complete, however I understand that it could become more complicated to create, especially if the coder doesn't know much about the citation system (MLA/APA). My idea would be a link to citationmachine.net where you'd be guided in the process and at the end you could copy and paste from the site both the Bibliographical citation (what would go in the bibliography) and the Parenthetical in text citations (what would travel with each note, simply adding the page number(s) before closing the parenthesis). These two pieces of information are important to keep wittied to each note.

The Bibliographical citations should be able to be organized in folders with tags and maybe a note, and should be able to be exported alphabetically, so you would have your References cited or Bibliography already compiled.

I think the key here is tagging and linking. If there would be a way to link each note to its reference, and you could create a system of tags, this would help you out in organizing your thoughts and creating effective outlines for your paper.

Often I've seen a lot of software created for almost futile reasons. I think something like this could help a lot of students in effectively organizing their thoughts and their research and be useful in their writing projects.

Hope to find a positive response! All the best!

you're a genius skrommel!

would it be possible to:
- iconize to system tray;
- auto-refresh;
- on "EJECT" put OK/CANCEL;
- make it easier to distinguish which drive (perhaps a pulldown menu, where you choose which drive, and upon choice you see only what is running from there);

By the way, I'm using PStart off a 2GB Micro Cruzer and it wasn't shown, nor was it closed when ejected. to C&E it says that the drive was ejected, but in fact it closed everything except PStart (which it didn't even see) and it did not eject my drive.

thanks guy! we'll get you some points!  ;)

Often using my USP device, I'mnot ableto remove it because something's open (sometimes it's just Explorer or something like that).

I'd like a program that could substitute the Remove USB Device icon and function of Windows, and substitute it with something that would automatically terminate all processes running via USB (whether it be an exe or a doc) and detach hassle-free my USB device.

First... would this be safe? and is it possible?

Thanks!

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Password Protect CD/DVD
« on: April 29, 2006, 11:44 AM »
cd-lock doesn't seem to need special rights, and i used it for a while and I liked it because it was simple.

if you guess the password than you see the contents unscrambled and you can run them. i'm almost thinking it just scrambled the names... and something like that would be low security and fine enough for many uses.

is it possible?

Sometimes we need to add some security to our files, and we want to protect the data on cds or dvds from prying eyes.

I've tried password protecting winzip or winrar files, but the files have to be copied to the hard disk, and that's no good.

What I'm requesting is to add a small file to your cds or dvds that will encrypt your files (data and filenames) without copying or leaving traces on the computer, with an option at creation to autorun, and password protect the files.

Somethig similar is at cd-lock.com

Any thoughts?

Hello!

I wanted to know of it were possible (and I know it is, I just don't know how!) to make a small server.

What I want is to share a folder's worth of files with my friends, give them an URL and a password so they can download from my pc.

Can anyone tell me the easiest and safest way to do this?

Thanks!

Finished Programs / Re: DONE - IDEA: Automatic Copy when highlighted
« on: January 03, 2006, 08:18 PM »
Skrommel-

DragKing presents a small problem, at least for me.

Whenever I need to paste, I usually double click the word I need to replace, but on double click I highlight and so I lose the original clip.

So I decided to use ClipStep with DragKing. Problem here is that ClipStep only works with CTRL+key.

My request would be a mixture of both...

With the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader, on dragging/highlighting, after a couple milliseconds, a small icon appears where you can click if you want to copy. This is interesting because obviously you don't want to save everything you highlight (and in my case, where I highlight a word or a phrase because I want to substitute it with the text in the clipboard, it becomes impossible). To be sure, maybe the highlighted text could "flash" once to confirm the copy.

This would mean to change ClipStep to allow these types of snippets, and not only CTRL+C.

I'd enjoy discussing these possibilities further, if you think they are useful!

Cheers!

I thought many of his users might appreciate a frame-software. You could just load this one proggie, and then inside define what are the ones that should go, maybe even to have just a single tray icon.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean mouser  :(

88
Would it be possible:
- to add an "Empty clipboard" to start over, with confirmation dialogue box?
- to user-define how many clips to be stored?
- user-define clicking on tray icon functions (es. left click empty, right click whatever)?

 ;) Ciao!

couldn't you make a single program structure that would hold all of your little proggies?

Unfinished Requests / [IDEA] Simply Desktop Calendar & To-Do List
« on: September 17, 2005, 07:53 AM »
There are a lot of calendar proggies out there, but I've been looking for something very simple:

- A simple month calendar to put on my desktop: just the numbers and the month. I'd like it to be transparent, but someone might like it to be bordered, etc;
- I'd like to select a date, and put a time and thing to do for that day. Maybe putting a special color border around it so I know there's something important (birthday, reunion, etc), and on hover a tooltip;
- Under the calendar, a list of a few of the next tasks (might I decide whether 2 or 5 or whatever?);

Not anything too complicated, just something very handy!

If anyone knows of a prog like this let me know. Otherwise it's an idea!

Cheers!

Just for fun...

Why not add a RaNDoM TeXt feature?  ;) (could simply be vowels in lower case consonants in upper...)

You could all it random or hacker...

Just a thought!

Cheers!

Thanks guys, but I need to ask one more thing.

I'm playing around with X-Mouse. It does exactly what I was looking for so far, and I especially like the change of cursor when it's activated.

I have a problem with the other window functions, like autoraise, focus, and so on. I don't understand how to modify the registry to deactivate these (basically I just want the copy function).

Would someone like to help me out on this?

Thanks is advanced!

Unfinished Requests / IDEA: Pre-select user on log-in
« on: June 03, 2005, 04:18 AM »
When I turn on my WinXP, I have two accounts, usually using the first.

I waste about 1-2 seconds (reminding that in this context, 1 computer second is equivalent to what seems like 1 hour!) using my touchpad and looking for the cursor and moving it to the right user and clicking to select it before inserting my password (*pant!*).

I recently learned that I can save some time using the WIN+DOWN ARROW key to select the user I want. But what if I did that through some sort of script?

I don't want to automatically logon, I just want that my prefered user is already selected for me so all I have to do is insert my password and hit enter.

Thanks!

You guys are great!

A utility that tells you what you are doing.

- On mouseclick, a wav that says "click!"
- On DblClick = "Doubleclick!"
(- Scrolling = "Scroll down/up/left/down")

- After 1 min of no activity = "You haven't been clicking or scrolling for 1 minute"

Just to make it a little more useful, it might have a log of how many clicks there have been...!
