Living Room / Re: Firefox fixes the version number problem
« on: August 25, 2011, 11:15 AM »
I have been searching for things like "chrome tab auto recover crash" and "chrome tab auto reload" but I can't find any other experiences either way that explain what's going on. So all I can tell you is that I suspect it's an extension you might have installed that periodically checks/reloads tabs, if it isn't crashing. Because I haven't seen tabs appearing to refresh itself and I use chrome for about 3 hours every day.

Interesting. I use Chrome for far longer each day, and usually never even close it except, obviously, when rebooting (which doesn't happen often).

As far as I know, none of my extensions should be reloading the tabs. Here are my extensions:

Adblock Plus for Google Chrome™ (Beta) - Version: 1.1.4
Ads were yesterday! The successful extension Adblock Plus is now available for Google Chrome™.

Facebook Disconnect - Version: 1.0.2

...
How did you make that list? Did you edit it by hand? Or could you copy it directly using some nice extension? And how did the titles get bold? Is it possible to paste formatted text into comments here in the forum?

Here is my list of active extensions (created by copying from the extension list and massaging using regular expressions in TextPad):

I've never seen this, only a prompt that asks me to restart chrome because its been a while and theres an update waiting to be installed.

Likewise. Are you sure it actually works the way you think it does?

- Oshyan

Nope. I'm not sure.

All I know is that occasionally all of my tabs suddenly reload themselves. I guess I just assumed it was because of an update but I suppose it could also be silently recovering from some sort of crash or something else entirely.
Funny, I made exactly the same observation as Deozaan, and made exactly the same assumption (that the reload of all tabs was due to an update), and I also don't know if my assumption is correct :).

Do you want to make it install by default?  Fine, but still give me the choice.  Just like the developer has the choice to NOT support older versions (or to charge for that support), I should have the choice NOT to install the newer version.  Taking away that choice is NEVER a good idea.
I agree.

It seems like to avoid an automatic upgrade you will have to block the address it uses to check for (or download) upgrades in your firewall or local proxy. I use Privoxy and could block it there (although I personally don't need to).

There is always a practical solution. :-)

and others
Well, it seems like there were no others :)

I did use 7 Ultimate for 4 months but downgraded to Vista  :P I will not pay for 7 but also not use illegal Windows for an extended period. Not outside Virtualboxes that is.
Same here, I will not pay for Windows 7, and I am also not so sure my hardware will work under Windows 7. After much tweaking and a memory upgrade my Vista has finally calmed down (no more trashing the disk) and it works smoothly now. :)

Thanks everyone for discovering and posting about the bug and for not getting so frustrated that you gave up on SC.
Give up on SC???? That is completely unimaginable to me! The program is so extremely cool! :eusa_dance:

YES! It is a MIRACLE! The ding is gone!

Thank you! You rock, mouser!

And thanks to Bamse and others who contributed to finding the cause!

56
I would like to see other victims run Process Monitor when clicking.

57
You guys suffering from it could confirm that it's not screenshot captor specific by opening up windows explorer and selecting items through it.
I have only found the problem in ScreenshotCaptor. There is no similar beep in Windows Explorer or any other program I use.

58
And thanks to f0dder for your explanations!  :)

59
I should be able to fix it simply be relaxing the conversion rules -- look for an update in the next few days.
That sounds really great! Thanks!

60
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

61
tanis424 has mentioned the same problem:

One small thing I'd love to have changed is the "ding" sound played whenever I select a thumbnail in the Screenshot Panel. I cannot find an option for this, it appears to be using the Windows Default Beep sound. A small thing, sure, but an annoying one. :)

62
Screenshot Captor / Re: Sound: How to turn off beep
« on: February 10, 2011, 04:57 PM »
Same problem as I am having, mentioned in this thread.

63
(I can see that this topic is about the same problem - no solution there either, though.)

64
I was using v2.89.01.
The problem is also there in the version you gave a link to.
The problem has been there for quite some time, at least 6 months I think.
It has not always been there.

When I right click a file or folder to the left, the beep also comes, before the context menu appears.
It doesn't matter what folder is displayed.

The beep does not come when I switch to Detailed view and click on files and folders. But in all the other three views (Thumbnails, Large icons, List) the sound is there when I click on files and folders.

In Detailed view, though, when I use the arrow keys to select the next or previous file or folder, the sound is there!

Wierd, huh?

65
Ah, so it's a Unicode problem... There is no other way than changing to Unicode?

Can UTF-8 be used in some way as a half-way solution? I know, though, that UTF-8 has its own challenges with characters of differing lengths from 1 to 6 bytes per character, making string slicing and character counting quite difficult.

But... I am able to type the Danish letters in the input box... Then they have to be converted to 1 byte/character strings? ASCII??

And yes, I could use the translations ae, oe and aa for æ, ø and å, but then I have to think of that every time... I hope to avoid that... :)

66
When I change between different screenshots to the left, I get a standard Windows beep ("C:\Windows\Media\Windows Ding.wav") every time. Even if I click on the image that is currently shown, I get the beep. This is rather annoying, as the beep is normally used for getting the user's attention, but there is no reason for it when I just click on an image...

Could this be fixed? :)

Jesper

67
On Vista Home Premium SP2  :)

68
I am using v2.89.01 of ScreenshotCaptor, by the way.

69
Yes, it worked when I posted it :-).

What I typed in the Name field was: "trådløst", not "tr_dl_st" as it was immediately changed into by ScreenshotCaptor.

70
When I rename a screenshot by changing the name in the "Name" box below the image, all Danish characters (æ, ø, å, Æ, Ø, Å) are changed into underscores ("_"). It seems completely unnecessary, as file names can contain these characters without problems.

Could this be fixed?

I am trying to attach an image with an example, but I cannot get a preview of it. But maybe it works when I post it?

And closing that window was slightly frightening, because the folder location was not always obvious.
;D

Anyway, installers improved afterwards...
But then came Windows Vista...  :D

I think I understand the problem, but I still find it quite amusing  ;D

72
Seems quite funny if that should be necessary. :D The computer asking the user "Will you please click this icon and then close the window?"

Aren't computers meant to do exactly this kind of stuff for us...? ;D

73
Ah, that makes sense - I understand the problem and see the challenge...

74
Ah, actually I am also using Vista (Home Premium)... So maybe it is simply a bug that FARR doesn't start again after the update?

75
Each time I install an update to FARR (which is quite often these days due to a lot of updates :)), I have to manually start FARR again from the Start menu.

Could it be possible to add a "Start Find And Run Robot when I press Finish" option, checked by default, to the last page of the installer?

I mean, anyway, nobody would ever want to use a computer without FARR running on it, right? ;)
