General Software Discussion / Re: Best password manager?

I am a big lastpass fan.  Nothing beats free and web-synced.

If their propaganda is true nothing is stored on their servers.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but given the infrequent updates I'm a little wary of AR.  I'd love to hear some counter-arguments.

Thanks so much.

General Software Discussion / Open Source Uninstaller Windows 7?
« on: March 01, 2010, 10:14 AM »
I have been using Revo for a while but now that it has a Pro version I am looking for alternatives.  I would love to know what other folks are using or if anyone knows of an open source uninstaller.

Another question - is Windows 7's uninstaller as slow as XP's?  Do I need a standalone program anymore?

This has to be one of the best ideas in a long time.  If I was smarter I might have thought of it myself.

I have been running Windows 7 on my laptop for a few weeks and I really like it a lot.  I didn't have to install a single driver and it boots up super fast on my ssd.  I've been fortunate and haven't bumped into any compatibility issues as of yet.  I will definitely buy it when it comes out.

I applied but have heard nothing.  I am using the beta and love it.  Its my primary OS right now.  My wife is still on xp on the desktop but if I can score a free copy of w7 she'll be making the move too.

I am such a tramp.  I'll do anything for free software.

They tried to teach us touch typing in high school but it never really took until I got out of college and had a job.  Now I am halfway decent.

This is a truly awesome program.  Its now my favorite launcher.  I love the retro look.

I really like Lastpass.  I've been using the betas for a while and I've been pretty pleased.  There have been some hiccups in the different builds, but overall its been solid.  I haven't been hit by any downtime and I like the ability to get to my passwords no matter where I am.  It works with IE and Firefox, which is a must for me at work.

General Software Discussion / Directory Opus 9 Questions
« on: March 14, 2009, 10:20 AM »
I just bought DO9 after reading about it on here, but I'm having some trouble I was hoping someone could help me out here.

I want to have DO9 open, double click on a folder and have it open in a new tab in the current window.  Right now when I do it the current view is replaced by the folder I double clicked on.

I'm sure this is a simple thing, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Also, does anyone know a way to move the tab bar to the top of the window instead of the bottom.

I won't even get into the hotkey thing... I'm addicted to autohotkey and I'm not in love with having to use the mouse so much with this program.

Please excuse any ignorance my questions may have displayed and thanks in advance to any and all who respond to my newbie questions.

Living Room / Re: Netvibes - What do you think?
« on: March 07, 2009, 08:01 PM »
At the risk of sounding totally retro, I use the Sage extension under Firefox. :)

I've used Sage in the past and could just never get it set up the way I wanted to.

I've had some availability problems with Netvibes lately too.

Also wondering, is there a way to wipe out all of the Google Reader feeds and start over?

Living Room / Netvibes - What do you think?
« on: March 07, 2009, 06:38 AM »
I've been using Netvibes for a few months now as a home base for monitoring my feeds and a few websites I'm interested in.

If I've learned anything from reading this forum, its that whatever I'm doing someone else on here is doing it smarter and faster.  That's why I'm asking if anyone on here is using Netvibes and if not, then what you are using to keep up with all your feeds and other stuff.

Thanks Mouser.  This site looks really interesting and like OldElmerFudd said quick and easy.  I'm adding it to my Netvibes right now.

That was a great list.  I have to print it out so my luddite friends can see it.

Living Room / Re: The Greatest Graphic Novel of All Time: Watchmen
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:40 PM »
Watchmen is definitely the best of all time.  I too bought the books at Forbidden Planet.  I really learned what comics could be from that book.  I've read a lot of stuff, but nothing holds a candle to Watchmen.

This is a product of a fundamental belief that if you let the rich get rich enough the money will "trickle down" to everyone else.  It hasn't worked anywhere in the world.  Wealth concentration begets wealth concentration, not dispersal.  Its a failed policy that's left the US with the greatest income disparity in the Western world.

As long as we (meaning Americans) judge our success by how the top 5% of our population lives we'll stay in this trap forever.

Living Room / Re: Why I Avoid Apple Products
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:31 PM »
I love the $2,599 model with 8 gb hard drive.

I avoid Apple because of the closed ecosystem.  I want to know that I'll have some backwards compatibility and that I can replace and upgrade the hardware as needed.

Besides, if you're not in design or advertising who really is using a Mac for work?  Everyone acts like Mac is taking over when they still don't have even 15% of the world market.

Only in the twisted Macworld is 9.61% marketshare dominance.

As I said to my wife when I persuaded her to sell Apple a couple of years ago, they're not a computer company, they're a consumer electronics company. BIG DIFFERENCE.

I use Everything.  Its simple to use, fast and runs on a usb key.

Living Room / Re: Have you used IE 8?
« on: January 29, 2009, 07:29 AM »
I've used IE 8 beta on my laptop and its been "O.K." not great, not bad, and definitely not anything I would dump Firefox for.

I'm going to download the latest version and start playing with it this weekend.
