N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« on: February 23, 2009, 06:12 AM »
I discovered a funny bug: every time Trout is restarted (I use window mode btw, not fullscreen) it increases its UI width a little bit. :D

I actaully had the same problem with an ahk app that I wrote, i needed to -8 pixels from the saved width, something todo with margins vs the actual width of the window...

Dinner at this restaurant, the in-laws are baby sitting!

And I really don't understand how any kind of digital notes that relies on you having to have a browser open, and Firefox 3 in particular, is supposed to be "started with absolute minimal effort". A simple notes.txt file on your desktop sounds easier & less effort.

I think a sticky note plugin for FARR would be doubly awesome, who wants to waste time clicking a mouse button  :)

Hmm, I wonder if there is a sticky note plugin for FARR....

Paul, I feel that your post represents the sentiments of the previous GOE's, based on what I've read about the previous GOE's so far.

I feel that the GOE is a frugal productivity system, it has a kind "bite off as much or as little as you want, no more, no less, we'll support you all the way"

Plus I feel the GOE addresses your 3rd point, community.  DC is already a community, yes it's primary purpose is software and software development, but there is so much more to this site than that (and I know I've hardly scratched the surface).  DC is full of sub communities, and I feel the GOE community is just a bunch of disorganised, disillusioned or disinterested people who aren't completely sold on the ideas of the 'trailblazers' and are looking deeper for something more.

For me, GOE seems to be about a journey of discovery, it's just another level of research.  I mean really, I wonder how many people took part in GOE, got organised and then got disorganised?  (Maybe they're following some Not GTD fad)

Hey, that would be cool, a Getting Disorganised Experiment.

Up until recently I was terminally disorganised.  I found a GTD system that works for me at work and am now looking for something that will help me outside of work (and yes I signed up for and am currently using, Autofocus).

Oh, and Paul, your posts are too long, but I do enjoy healthy discussion!

Mouser, are you still looking at kicking off GOE 2009, I'd like to help out..
Kwacky,
Had you ideas for it?

also, have you seen the thread about Mark Forsters new organisational method ?

Hi tomos,

No ideas, just in a getting organised/gtd kind of mode.. Thanks for the pointer to autofocus...

Skrommel's Software / Re: Noise
« on: February 02, 2009, 06:50 PM »
I use Noise to stop the screensaver kicking one while the in-laws are using skype, works great

And it's especially good, considering I'm using it on a laptop which has a screen saver controlled by group policy.

How about we begin GOE 2009 in January to usher in the new year?

Does someone want to volunteer to be the the supervisor of whatever "Getting Organized 2009" entails?

I think waiting until january would be a good idea for several reasons, not the least of which is we have our big NANY 2009 thing that ends on or around January 1st so we don't want GOE 2009 to start until a couple weeks after that finishes.

Mouser, are you still looking at kicking off GOE 2009, I'd like to help out..

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Teddy - A simple drum machine!
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:24 AM »
Great work scannie, I like the updates.

  • Couldnt get it to change soundbanks until i turned off numlock key and then hit ctrl+numpad keys.

Fixed, use «0-9» or dedicated button.

Now the numpad doesn't do anything, either with control key or numpad on or off..

And the 'switch soundbank' key looks like the space bar, is the space bar meant to cycle the soundbanks?

I use PowerCircle on my work laptop when I'm on battery because I know my battery will barely last past an hour, so it's great to have a simple visual indication of my battery remaining.

Great Work

Crush: no timestamp? That sounds pretty messed up and basically impossible :-s

I've been also trying to make Comparer work from Explorer's context menu but registry tricks are not working for multiple files. Comparer is loaded for each file separately. I spent two days investigating this problem back in December and the only thing I could make is to make Comparer use only single instance. In this case it was OK. Unfortunately: I don't want that this way because I would like to have the possibility to have as many Comparers opened as I like.

There might be the way: shell extensions. If someone is wiling to write one for my app I will gladly distribute it together with one package. True is I've tried to write it in C# by my own but it appeared to be too much for me to achieve :(

I will gladly welcome anyone who is willing to create Explorer's menu extension for Comparer.
-fenixproductions (January 28, 2009, 04:19 AM)

There's an even easier solution that works brilliantly.
Create a shortcut to comparer in your SendTo folder, now select any 2 files in explorer, right click, SendTo->Comparer.

I have some files here that contain NO kind of timestamp. This would be useful to repair these broken dates. Does someone also has found anything like this on his drives?

Crush, you might find AnteDator useful for that purpose.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: LifeSaver diary
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:03 AM »
Note: I also discovered an issue with the installer. You'll need to uninstall any previous version before installing this update.

Darned installers. I hate 'em. I wish there was decent documentation from Microsoft. There's lots of stuff that says "if you select this then X", but it really never tells you what the heck "X" means, and what its implications are.

Hey CWuestefeld, if you need any help with MSI packaging, I'm your man, it's what I do day to day.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: CrazyLittleFingers
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:04 AM »
Its not working for me. I just get a black screen but no interaction.
Edit: Oh. Never mind! I didn't realize that you have to download the whole zip file. It is a little confusing or maybe I'm just an idiot.

It's definitely confusing, I really need to put some effort into my website.

Anyway, you'll all be pleased to know that I've finally fixed the "left monitor is not my primary monitor" bug.  So if you've got a dual/multi screen setup, you'll want to download the latest update (or click here for the full version).

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Press
« on: January 20, 2009, 07:46 AM »
So anyway, that's why i think it's so cool when i see a program that was part of the NANY event written up, i think to myself how cool it is that someone took notice of the work that this coder put into their program, and how much more rewarding it may be to the coder to see their good work acknowledged.

You got it in one Mouser.  I've been programming ever since I laid my hands on a keyboard (go GW-BASIC) and at work I must have 1,000 or more scripts that I've written to help with random tasks.

But I've never released anything, and to have *my* program download over 3,000 times in one day is just mind-boggling.  Not to mention, every single hit came via donationcoder.com.

I have definitely found NANY rewarding, and it has inspired me to start coding again, which is something I've always loved to do.

Thanks again to Mouser, DC, Perry, all the NANY participants and anyone who took the time to look at our programs.

Holy batman, I won something  :tellme:

Perry, not enough can be said about how awesome you've made this NANY event, not only did you round us all up but you also took the time to test and provide constructive feedback on each and every application.

For your efforts, above and beyond the call of duty, we thank you!
