Living Room / Re: Noisy PSU advice
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:32 PM »
Thanks for the advice. Learned a few things.  :)

I plan on unplugging all the cables (the psu is a modular unit, all cables can be disconnected) and taking the unit out for a good "airring" before I do any warranty business.

@Ath: Yes I am pretty sure it's the PSU fan as the noise seemed to be the loudest at the bottom of the case (psu is on the bottom). I cleaned out the CPU fan (wasn't that dusty) and got as close to it as I could and didn't hear any noise aside from the fan whine/hum.

Living Room / Noisy PSU advice
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:00 PM »
Would appreciate any wisdom in this area.

Lately my PSU has been making growling/chatter/clinking noises when powering the machine. I have opened the computer sides (of the case) and didn't see anything stuck/broken (as best as I could see through the vents).

I am not sure if just blowing out dust is going to fix the chattering noises.. bb's in the fan gone awry?

The PSU is a Seasonic 750. Has anyone dealt with Seasonic's warranty department?

Easiest way to turn off your computer is to press the power button!

SHHH!! Don't say that too loudly! MS might hear that.

I have been using (local machine app) website-watcher by adding any app's (that I own/have) download page to the watch list. Only time I have to make a change is when the site author decides to spruce the page and changes the download page.

Works for me.  :)

Hm.. wonder how support is going to tell a Win8 user that they need really reboot/power cycle what not their machine because the OS basically needs to clear anything that may be borked in memory.

The next gen of Windows (business/office) users are going to be very interesting.. it's hard enough right now trying to get them to understand that icons on the desktop aren't your applications...

Yah.. pull the power cable and/or remove the battery.. probably will fail thanks to the "hibernate" feature... Sooo.. hello new HD!? Special price for you.  :D

Seriously!? Since when did people stop using the start button?

Wonder if MS realizes that they probably just screwed the business community. I can already see the chaos.

Why Microsoft killed the Windows Start button

Living Room / Re: Google Tablet
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:23 PM »
I cancelled my pre-order for the Google Nexus 7 tablet... no memory card support. Boo!

When I called to cancel my order, I voiced my disappointment to the Google CS, his response indicated the lack of a memory card support was a common complaint but in Google's defense (his words), the tablet was designed to be a cloud device. I then mentioned that if I was traveling, the "cloud" may not be available/affordable and would therefore render the tablet somewhat unusable. The CS person agreed and was unable to come up with an adequate response.

I am going to wait for the ASUS MeMO 370T Tablet, which is pretty the Google Nexus 7 with memory card support.

Just a thought, try downloading a portable version of firefox and see if you have the same cookie problem.

Portable version of FF creates a portable profile so technically everything should isolated to the portable profile.

Nice find Carol, I am sure others might be tempted.

Me is busy checking out my belated humble bundle. I have a long plane ride coming up this weekend so hopefully I will be able play some of the games on my laptop.

@Carol Haynes:

Yes, Amazon CS is pretty good and that is half the reason I shop on Amazon. Surprisingly even when I get "outsourced" Amazon CS, they have been decent and have always been able to resolve issues (plus I have been able to understand them).

Well.. it took a little time, but the fine folks doing the Humble Bundle (Josh) figured out what the issue was and things were resolved.

Waiting on the next Humble Indie Bundle...  :-*

About to chew my hat here.. (though I don't even own one...). .

I used amazon payments to donate to the humble bundle but Humble Bundle doesn't seem to have a record of my transaction. Amazon payments has a record and a confirmed statement saying it was sent. Humble Bundle keeps saying they don't have a record (I sent them amazon's transaction number).

Not sure what to do here.. don't really want to do a charge-back (via amazon) nor do I want to feel like I was just screwed here.  :-\

I am considering just forgetting the whole thing and chalk it up to a decent donation to a worthy cause..

One problem is that there are a lot of materials out there that read "for a chance to win $1000", and THAT is not worth the time.

*ahem* May I interest you with an email that may contain the winning number for the UK lottery for 10,000,000 Euro!? Surely the email would be worth the time... you may already be a winner!

I think I am going to wait and see how v2 of google drive turns out.

General Software Discussion / Google Drive Version Changes?
« on: June 18, 2012, 08:36 PM »
Is there list/site of fix/enhancements/changes for Google Drive?

I sure would like to know what's new and improved (or broke) with each version. I know Google is big on "silent" installs and updates, but when you are deploying for a business/school the admins and users need know if they should update or wait.

Personally I dislike a forced full 2-way sync especially since my upload is like a tenth of the speed of my download. I would much rather see placeholders/links and when I double-click on them it should initiate the download of the file. I know it does for folders, how about individual files? Perhaps we may see that in newer build... assuming you know about it.

I am hoping someone with better google-fu knows or has stumbled on google drive changes.

Go Metro! Even the blue screen is now ugly!

Isn't Metro MS's touchy feelly OS?? Surprised MS didn't put a lil blurb about "touch the BSOD to feel better".

New feature.. you can now touch a BSOD!

I've always used shared drives (Samba) between Windows and Linux boxes and can't recall ever having a problem.  In other words, I don't ever use Network Neighborhood or its ilk, just mapped drives.

Same here. Mapped drives seems be more stable and much easier to setup.

General Software Discussion / Re: uTorrent alternatives?

Probably because you have the sidebar hidden (Hit F7).

Dang.. You are right, F7 shows it. Might have to switch back to 2.2.1..

Im using uTorrent 3.1.2 build 26773 and the only ad for the plus version I see is a small box in the lower left corner. The previous few versions have been the same way.

Odd.. using same client but I don't see any ads.. not that I want any that is.

Just curious, would you mind upping a pic of the ad and it's position?

I recommend you take the magnets out and play with them...

Heh! Funny you should say that. I am still trying to get a couple of HD magnets off a storage cabinet at work.

What to do with older HD's?

I am slowly building up a random collection of 74, 160, and 300 GB sata HD's. They are probably 3~7 years old.

I really don't feel comfortable in giving them to someone who will then use it and probably blame me when it fails.

Wish there was a place that would give you a small discount for recycling them.

Living Room / Re: Google Ends Privacy
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:13 PM »
Simple answer is to login to YouTube etc. with a different account.

  That's the plan.

Why though, all they're doing is aggregating their profile on the types of topics/things you Google with the types of videos you like to watch. Something I'd assumed they always did.

Meh, I don't want some software(or person) to profile my likes/dislikes without my consent. I don't want to be inundated with various youtube crap that google "extrapolates" based on my random searches or whatnot.

Now if Google were to give me a commission on my data.. things might be slightly different. j/k ;D

There is a reason why I use ad blockers and session only cookies.

General Software Discussion / Re: MIDI pass-through for VMware, how?
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:01 PM »
I think midi-to-USB adapter probably the best way to go.

I know vmware workstation 8.x seems to work (pass) rather well with just about any usb device.
