Amazon has a bunch of Clip+ 8GB refurbs in $35 - $45 range. I am pretty sure you get the same 1 year warranty with the refurbs. I know I did with mine. Refurbs at the bottom of the page.

You could try uninstalling the sound card from device manager (sometimes something corrupts a driver/setting whatnot) and reboot. Windows should automatically detect and reinstall the drivers.

Absolutely fantastic.. first higher prices and now they slash the warranty years.

Uh.. I think we want lower prices and higher warranty.. not the other flipping way around!

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« on: December 18, 2011, 11:49 AM »
I am glad WinRar is grandfathering in customers that had purchased license with lifetime upgrades.

I personally see nothing wrong if they are changing their licensing agreement for new customers, just don't pooch your old customers by virtually tearing up the old contract and shoving the new one down their throats.

I feel like that I made an investment in a early/startup company by purchasing their product based on certain features and promotions, fully knowing that the company may or may not prosper.

Living Room / Re: Moving up to ESET NOD32 v5
« on: November 19, 2011, 01:42 PM »
It's amazing that amount "crap" that various applications pre-install (think auto update programs for instance) that I would have never realized (thereby wouldn't have known to remove/delete those extra apps) without an interactive "personal firewall".
Might sound a bit harsh, but: Use your brain. A "personal firewall" is not meant to replace your own thinking. If you don't know what an application actually installs, use snapshots of your system. If you don't want to, I can't see your actual problem with that.

Oh: ESS is not made for malware detection, it features a virus scanner, not a "potentially unwanted software" scanner. :)

I am not sure how your average user is suppose to know the mind of an author/programmer that is devious in hiding unwanted processes/applications on startup/installation.

What seems to a common trend now is for installations to tack on various toolbars and spyware apps. Even a few of the trusted applications that I use, the newer versions now bundle junk with it, so you have to babysit the damn install and uncheck the junk.

An interactive personal firewall is useful as a first line of defense, it can alert the user that some app wanting out.

ESS like many other antivirus (started off as) programs are now trying to throw in the kitchen sink with their program so they try to be a jack of all trades in that area but are not always successful in every field.

I quite like interactive "Personal Firewalls". I don't like applications "phoning home" without my knowledge or consent.

I am too dumb to comprehend half the EULA's that are out there assuming they even mention that the application/installer is going be sending/receiving information/updates behind the scenes.

It's amazing that amount "crap" that various applications pre-install (think auto update programs for instance) that I would have never realized (thereby wouldn't have known to remove/delete those extra apps) without an interactive "personal firewall".

Currently I am using Eset's ESS 5 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro. They both seem to play and behave well together.

ESS seems to be weak in removing and detecting malware (realtime) and for that Malwarebytes takes over.

......
The same has been raised for Roboform, Ad Muncher (just off the top of my head).
.....

Please don't lump Ad Muncher in with RoboForm.

Ad Muncher honored (lifetime versions and support) and grandfathered in all their users assuming you had purchased before their license term change (October 8th 2006).

I say this because I own several Ad Muncher lifetime licenses. I have always been impressed with their support and timely updates/fixes. You can still purchases a lifetime license but the price has substantially increased.

Now Roboform on the other hand.. shame on them! 'nuff said.

I own 2 clip+'s and have rockbox installed on both of them.

First one is being used a jukebox in my car (with a usb power adapter). Never leaves my car.

Second one used at work. It's tiny and it fits behind my speakers.

General Software Discussion / Re: DOS Batch Functions Tutorial
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:22 PM »
Ah batch files.. not elegant but it does the job for a lot simple things.

As simple as it is, you would be surprised how many well paid techs don't even know how to create simple batch files. I say this because I work in a department full of techs that know next to nothing about batch files (don't even talk about more powerful scripting languages).

Personally, I have switched to AutoIT. Awesome scripting app.

What model/brand motherboard?

Do you know if you have sata set to ahci mode? If so, download and install intel storage matrix drivers, assuming mobo is intel chipset and sata ports that is.

I know several (various big name brand) laptop and desktop models that spontaneously rebooted randomly till the intel drivers were installed.

Living Room / Re: 64 Bit OS - When to Switch ?
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:16 PM »
I have been using Vista x64 and Win 7 x64 for years now. System and OS have been pretty decent.

Just remember that your hardware should be relatively recent (2005+) as vendors *should* have drivers for your hardware (using name brand helps). It wouldn't hurt update the system bios while you are at it.

95% of all my software (x32) worked just fine in x64 os.

Has anyone bought any software from Softwaremedia.com?

It seems they have been around for quite some time and their prices are seem to good to be true (compared to traditional web stores).

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 10
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:29 PM »
BTW, when the website says an upgrade quote is only valid until 15th May, I think it just means that particular quote. You can ask for another quote after that time.

I don't know exactly how long the 40% offer will exist for but I'd be surprised if it was only for two weeks. A lot of people won't even realise Opus 10 is out in that amount of time.

The time limited 40% upgrade for existing 9 members.. um.. hello(?). Great way to show appreciation for your customers.

*wipes off screen lint on monitor* Had me squinting there for a second on Nude1 uh Nudel's name. Thought something was off.

But they're delivering infinite growth and managing stakeholder benefits with increased value propositions for stock holders and buzz market 3.0 showing social network integration success that raises brand recognition and promotes sustained market penetration and higher market share in value-added markets in socially driven...

wow..! all in one breath too.. don't suppose you are willing to negotiate a house purchase for me? ;D

I noticed that I am unable to download my past purchased music (singles and albums) from amazon.  Wish Amazon would have put any past mp3 purchases into their cloud storage (assuming you signed up for it.. free) especially since they mentioned that purchased mp3 doesn't count towards used storage.

Food for thought... No privacy on Amazon's cloud drive.

Less so than other cloud storage?

Hate Ashampoo, company kept on sending me email spam even after I removed addresses from their list. Ended up having to make a filter to auto delete from my inbox.

Never will purchase anything from Ashampoo.
