4501  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: A unified FARR / Launcher Interface Proposal on: February 02, 2006, 10:24:51 AM
Try bblean as an alternative to explorer as it has this function.
That is exactly my problem. I've been using bblean for 2 years, up until last week, when i decided to go back to explorer. (because of a few compatibility issues) But i couldn't find a way of bringing that feature to explorer Sad

Supporting alpha-transparency does not have to make FARR slower at all. The drop in speed will come with the use of skins themselves which FARR already supports (and didn't slow it down...)
OK..I thought that transparencies slowed down the computer, and not the skins themselves.. So, i agree with you, i hope someday Farr will look that good Wink

so adding that technology to Farr seems like a natural thing to do..
Good to know that, i think it will prove itself very useful!

OK i like it, let's go for it.
Yippee!!! dance dance dance

i really like the idea that the groups be displays as tool menus in that farr menubar - it seems to me that sometimes you want to locate by name, and sometimes you like to browse visually, so it's a nice idea.  not sure exactly how to handle the case of groups where there are regular expressions involved..
I agree with your statement about "recall vs. recognition" and yesterday, i found that i have my computer full of interesting apps that i never use because i tend to forget them. At the very least, the toolbar could remember me to delete them! Wink
But i didn't get what is the problem you mentioned... Can't the launchbar be integrated with farr? What's the problem with reg-ex?

look at jpaiva's avatar
I just thought i should be supporting the "Egiptian guy running", so as his great app can get even more attention cheesy cheesy

[offtopic] PS: i forgot to mention in my earlier post, David Lanham's site has very good artwork, not only good-looking icons, but also well-made backgrounds (and in widescreen, just as i need them! cheesycheesy) [/offtopic]

I just noticed this post is my 100th post on DonationCoder! I'm one happy, proud member! cheesy cheesy

Well, one of my wishlist items for V2 is task control, but that is from a keyboard centric perspective (adaptive search through running apps). There is lots of existing code (Litestep, BBLean etc) out there for this sort of thing that mouser could use, though for me it then skirts too close to becoming an explorer replacement for my liking.
I know that this was one of the things to be implemented (i think associated with the quicksilver-like interface, right?), that's one of the reasons i think this would not be hard to add to the toolbar. But as i said, this is only a dream Wink
As for being an explorer replacement... It wouldn't be, the main shell would still be explorer, only without taskbar.
(i just hate not having the possibility of inconizing tasks in the taskbar, the titles take too much space tongue)

Sadly, the current skin engine does not support alpha-transparency and so I cannot make such a skin for FARR yet.
Actually, i don't think that's bad..We don't want farr to be slower, right? Wink
But i like the design proposition you presented for farr v2, very smooth cheesy

Since nontroppo sugested this in another topic, i thought it was a brilliant idea.
Quote
for me i use a launch bar as a kind of "visual memory"
I agree with mouser, seeing the apps right there, sometimes might be better that launching them, since it allows you not to forget what you have in your computer.

Another idea just popped to me:
With this adition, farr will let you not need start menu for anything. So, i was already thinking of a way to remove the button. Then i though: if this bar would have support for taskbar support (like yzdock has, similar to mac osx's dock, i think), farr would allow me to remove the taskbar and use only farr, in a much more intuitive way than the taskbar works!
(i just love this idea, but i know, it's just plain crazy, but still, a nice dream Wink )

ps: nontroppo, that skin is beautifull!  tellme tellme

It'd be nice to have a taskbar clock like that Wink

TaskTracker is nice, possibly what eusebius was looking for.
I wanted a slightly different thing, i made a ahk script that i just drag and drop a file to a box, and it gives me the comment i had on it, or creates a new one. So as when i download something, i add it to my program and create a new comment on it. (next version,I'll integrate it with opera's transfers window Wink )
ps: i did it mostly for the fun and exercise, but anyone interested, please post a line

sounds good to me, i don't mind having a score based on recency and on frequency.
(...)
i think i better start seriously working on FARR 2 again in the next week while all these ideas are still fresh.
Good to know that! Thanks!  Thmbsup Thmbsup Thmbsup

I think Jay made another point that i also agree.
Farr should give different bonuses to apps that are more frequently used.
I have a problem with 2 apps: one script i made called "url" and "urlsnooper".
It's very rare that i use urlsnooper, but it still comes up before url, because it's in more important folders.
I solved this by checking the history and changing "url"s bonus, but still it bugged me.
I think the bonus for already launched apps should increase (maybe in a logarithmic way, to prevent apps from having an enormous score).
Why didn't you implement it like that, mouser? Do you have any concerns about that?

I think that program you proposed is extremely usefull, and unfortunately, I've never seen one like it.

It would be something somewhat similar to windows vista's "virtual folders", right?
I like the tag utility, i use it in gmail, and consider it a great way of organizing things.

The problem is, that this is not exactly a "coding snack", i think it's much harder than that.
Altough, if someone decides to do it, i think it would be a very nice app to be running in the tray, and then you just drag and drop a file in the icon, and a dialog comes up to ask you for a tag and a description of the file. (maybe even a contextmenu in explorer? Wink )

Anyways, I'm a supporter of your idea, eusebius, I'd like to see such app. And who knows, maybe it even already exists! cheesy

4514  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: TyperA - test your typing skills on: January 30, 2006, 08:31:45 AM
It is so bad to do it in portuguese... Lost of words don't get typed the right way (java's fault) anyways, my results:
Your score: 227 keys per minute ~ 45 words per minute
Language/mode: po
Ranking: Not bad!
Comparison: 43% of registered TyperA users using this language have typed a better result; 57% have a lower or equal result.
Allen and brotherS: how can you type so fast? You must have a special keyboard, right? Or your keyboard only lasts for one month? Wink

4516  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Problem with windowblinds + a couple of suggestions on: January 29, 2006, 01:35:46 PM
Good to know that, mouser. I've hade the same problems with the context menu sometimes not appearing.
One advice that works with me, alexp:
When you record a snapshot, on the left pane go one folder up (you might get an error doing this, i have, just ignore it) and back, and all the options appear again. Hope that smart thumbnail browser won't take long Wink
4517  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Problem with windowblinds + a couple of suggestions on: January 29, 2006, 07:01:16 AM
Hey Alex!
That is some seriously strange behaviour going on there..
Some of mouser programs have problems with windows with different (bigger) font types than the default ones. Do you think it could have something to do with that? If it does, mouser is already aware of that Wink
As for 4, you already can right-click the image on the left pane and access that menu, or do you mean having that menu as a button on sc?
4518  DonationCoder.com Software / ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander on: January 29, 2006, 06:56:42 AM
I just found out Stardock's Right Click. Although not free, I think it's also worth mentioning.

GroupBar is sooo nice!
It's just a shame it's sooo buggy to.. Sad
But it's a very interesting concept, i think it deserves much attention!
Isn't there another program similar to GroupBar? (one that really works? Wink )

Exactly! Actually, i didn't think about the possibility of adding this option to the "keyboard-accessed context menu options" on the results mentioned before, but it sure is a perfect solution for the problem!
Thanks!!
(at last, i can sleep without worries.. Wink )

I guess i should have been more specific on how easy it is to create aliases with typeandrun.
Here goes a small tuturial and a few suggestions:
I'll create an alias for screenshotcaptor:
First, i call typeandrun, and write the full path of sc (with auto-complete, it's fairly easy, but in farr, it is even easier, since i only have to type the name of the app.):

then, i press ctrl + n and get this:

i press enter, and it's done Wink
The things i want to demonstrate here are that in farr, i wouldn't even have to write the full path, so, I'd only write "screen" and sc would be the first result, then i would press ctrl+n (one important thing here, is that this interface would only work for the first result) and then, I'd press enter, since the name of the alias was already there, as it is the name of the app.
To add to an already existing group alias, i think ctrl+shift+n could make a dialog appear with all the aliases groups, I'd select one, press enter to select it and enter to confirm configuration, and I'd have an app added to an alias.
Don't you agree with me that this just brings alias to another level? They become much more practical and easy to create.
(BTW, i don't like to use my mouse when I'm typing, that's the only reason I'm insisting on this..sorry)

Amadawn.. Good find! Rocket Dock is very good, and better than YzDock, the zooming is far more smooth, and it still is being developed.. Great cheesy
4524  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Inconsistencies in file matching on: January 28, 2006, 01:18:30 PM
Acrystal.. I think your problem has nothing to do with farr inconsistencies..
Farr doesn't search for folders, only files.
What you can do is add shortcuts to your folders somewhere in a folder that farr searches.
If you've detected such problems with files, please post the problems so as we (mouser  tellme) can enlighten you cheesy
(if you'd really like farr to be able to search for folders, please post your love for farr to help us persuade mouser to launch the new farr v2 Wink )
4525  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Another similar app (disclaimer: I haven't tried it) on: January 28, 2006, 01:11:21 PM
I've never used Quicksilver, but I've used colibri, and yes, colibri searches for non-contiguous letters, which i think is an important feature missing in farr Sad
The question for you, mouser is this: will this feature make farr search slower? (i hope not, but my small programming experience tells me it will do.. Sad )
Another thing that mouser mentioned were the aliases. IMO, they are very powerfull, a bit hard to use, but most of all, not very practical... At least, not until mouser adds a hotkey to create and update them... (please... please... make aliases more practical... make me not need typeandrun.. Wink Wink )
