1  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Free course on Hugo, a static site generator written in Go on: January 24, 2015, 07:08:18 PM
That's good to hear about the voice - I don't want to be stressing anyone out. And that's a great idea to do more of a comparison of other static generators, with a summary and pros/cons. I could add that as a lesson.

Thanks for the feedback, it's extremely helpful (and I look forward to more as you get farther on)

You're very welcome, thanks for signing up thumbs up

You may have seen it already, but I go over how I converted a Wordpress theme to use with Hugo. It might help you make sense of Hugo's templates since you're already familiar with Wordpress.

And please let me know about any questions, mistakes or just general comments.

Cool. I have played with Go too and I really like it. I've read a few books and have thought about creating something with it, but I haven't carved out the time yet. It's a lot of fun to experiment with different languages. It's harder to sit down and work through a project and fix all the bugs, especially when you're just starting out smiley
4  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Free course on Hugo, a static site generator written in Go on: January 23, 2015, 11:21:06 AM
I jumped on the static site generator bandwagon a little less than a year ago. As with most things, I spent quite a bit of time researching a load of options to find the "best" one. I really liked Hugo and its speed, and have used it to run the new site I created ever since. I hit a lot of snags when I was initially setting up the site, and I felt like that might keep others from using Hugo.

I'd also wanted to create a course on Udemy, so I created a course on Hugo. As a sort of beta test, it's free with a discount link until the end of the month.

Here's the link to sign up for the free course (It will be valid until 31 Jan 2015 at the stroke of midnight)

Feedback or questions would be much appreciated. It's easy to forget things that make sense now, but didn't when I first started using it.

And even if you don't choose Hugo but you start using another static site generator, I think you'll like the workflow. I really enjoy writing my content in Markdown and being able to git push to publish.

6  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a minimalist Desktop Calendar Application.. on: April 30, 2013, 12:21:34 PM
Another option to look at for ideas is Calendar Editor Pro.  The main thing going for it is you can type directly into each day.  The interface isn't great for navigating between months and years, it's rough around the edges and the author disappeared and took down the site.

You can find version 3.0 at Softpedia.

7  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Newest malware now able to target virtual machines? on: August 24, 2012, 04:29:31 PM
is full-disk encryption something that wouldn't be frustrating to use on a day to day basis?

I have to use full-disk encryption on a work laptop and for day-to-day use it means you have to type in the encryption passphrase before it can boot up, then it works as usual.  In my case the laptop would frequently get stuck partway through loading the encryption screen and hang when I had the laptop in a docking station.  Apart from that it hasn't been a nuisance.

One negative I've heard about is apparently when an encrypted drive fails there's little chance at recovering the data because even if you can read some sectors, they're all encrypted and meaningless.  I don't if that's true or not.

That ragged edge effect is great, thanks!
9  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Index error in Screenshot Captor on: August 18, 2012, 05:25:53 PM
It all started when I saw the jagged-edged screenshot on ImgBurn.com and tried to create something similar with Screenshot Captor.  I browsed through the frames and masks, then saw the Clipart button and took a peek.  I got a few index errors, then when I closed SC it said there had been two crashes.

I downloaded a new portable version of SC and ran it to see if my .ini was causing it.  At first I didn't see the problem, so I copied the default .ini file to my portable installation and not only did I get the error, but afterwards SC wouldn't close, even with several Process Explorer and Task Manager kill attempts.  It was using very little CPU, but my machine was acting really slow.  I discovered it was doing around 3MB/second of disk usage (I may have hit the Rescan Dirs button at some point) at which point I restarted Windows.

I believe the default window size forces the toolbar into 2 columns, and I have only seen the error when the window is a large enough for a single column toolbar.

Returning to my original question, I think the imgburn.com image was made with TechSmith's Snagit, but if there was a similar frame or mask then it could be used with SC, apart from the drop shadow that goes along with the jagged edge.

Here's a recording so you can see exactly what I did to get the error.

It's a very fancy one. The Dell Standard Laptop Keyboard.

What keyboard do you use?
12  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Typing Speed Competition! on: August 06, 2012, 12:54:42 PM
What is the G15?

I think it's the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard that can record and playback macros.

15  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Main window seemingly wouldn't appear on: August 06, 2012, 12:21:28 PM
I use a portable installation of ScreenshotCaptor in Dropbox so the same settings are used across all of my computers.  At work I have two large monitors and at home I have a smaller one.  Last night I could not see the main window of Screenshot Captor and I couldn't figure out why.  Screenshots appeared in the screenshots dir as usual, but no amount of cajoling would make the window appear.  This morning I ran it at work and the main window was on the second screen.  I then realized the saved position was off screen at home, and confirmed it by manually changing UserMainLeft and UserMainTop.

Could you make sure UserMainLeft and UserMainTop are within the current screen resolution?

As a stopgap solution I added a new entry to my AutoHotKey Window movement shortcuts:

Formatted for Autohotkey with the GeSHI Syntax Highlighter [copy or print]
  1. ; Move the active window to 0,0 in case it's off the screen with Alt+Windows+Home
  2. !#Home::
  3.   winmove, A,,0,0
  4.   return
16  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Blog comments - On of off? on: May 03, 2012, 11:25:17 AM
I agree - some popular blogs have better content in their comments than they have in the original blog post.  Lifehacker was a great example of this.  They had some of the best commenters around (now not so much).
17  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service on: April 04, 2012, 01:58:44 AM
To add another data point, I've been using JungleDisk on Rackspace storage for about 10-15GB but the monthly cost has been creeping up over the years.  Tonight I installed CrashPlan so I could backup everything on all my computers and so far I'm impressed.  Memory usage for CrashPlanService is 123MB (out of 8GB).  It's chugging along nicely, uploading ~1TB of data.

Good old Classic Shell, second thing I install on a new Win7 machine. smiley

Now you've left us hanging  hanged- what's the first?

I install Google Chrome then Dropbox, where I keep all my essential portable utilities like FARR, FreeCommander, KeePass, Linkman, ClipX, Autohotkey, iDailyDiary,  Notepad++, Foobar2000, ActionOutline, and a few hundred more cheesy
19  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: The start of the Start Button Menu things for Win8 on: April 02, 2012, 11:39:37 PM
For me, Windows 8 is a huge no-go.  It will fail as a Desktop OS, and it will fail as a Tablet OS.

I agree.  A one-size fits all approach leaves both sides lacking basic features.  I hope Windows 8 dies a fast death.

Interesting that your upload speed is SO much higher than download speed??? Doesn't look quite right to me!

Wtf, looks backwards lol

It's been like that for the 3 years I've had it.  I was told by the installer that it's hard for them to limit upload speeds on their end.  (The service is supposed to be synchronous, 25Mbps up and down)

I echo Samer's findings.  Screenshot Captor is the best screenshot software out there.  Thanks Mouser (and congratulations for the well-deserved praise).
24  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: 7 Freeware Windows Explorer Alternatives / File Managers compared on: June 08, 2011, 05:30:55 PM
Excellent find, Jaden. The reviewer picked his apps, delimited his criteria, and set about comparing them. With file managers being so different from one another, even a limited review like this one is a big task. Just ask mouser!!

I completely agree - reviewing all 15, then paring the list to 7 and choosing sensible ways to compare them is a time-consuming, thankless process.  Well, not completely thankless since we're thanking him here smiley

They forgot my favorite, cubic explorer

Actually, they looked at 15 and chose their top 7 to compare.  Cubic Explorer was one of the original 15.

After evaluating 15 freeware programs seven of them were chosen for detailed consideration. In alphabetical order these programs are: FreeCommander, Master Commander, NexusFile, Q-Dir, SE-Explorer, UltraExplorer and xplorer2 lite. The following programs were also evaluated but got a lower score than the first seven: a43, AltCommander, CubicExplorer, ExplorerXP, FileAnt, JExplorer, Pablo Commander and Snowbird.
