Apart from Microsoft Security Essentials, I'm not running any anti-malware or internet filtering junk - and the situation isn't any better when wget'ing from my linux server.

That pretty much rules out an issue on the client side if wget is failing.  In the MediaTemple case it only happened with very large files (more chance to conflict with a known virus pattern?) but filtering only occurred when the files were served from Apache.  Can someone scp a problem file to another server to see if the file comes across alright?

52
It could also be an anti-virus app on the user's system that's scanning downloads and messing with the file.  Do the failures occur with particular files, or is it completely random?

53
A few months ago I ran into a problem with MediaTemple where certain downloads were corrupted.  It turned out the network guys had enabled a virus scanner that was incorrectly flagging certain files as having a virus.  They admitted the scanner had never correctly identified a payload, only given false positives, and disabled it so our downloads worked.  Perhaps something along those lines is happening here?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: (another) Linkman Review
« on: April 06, 2011, 11:43 AM »
I too have been impressed with the Linkman team's responsiveness.  I've given them feedback on at least a half dozen minor issues I've encountered and within an hour or two they reply either asking for clarification or to say the fix will be in the next build.  It's a great app and by listening to feedback it will continue to get even better.

I'm relieved because at least it will cost a stalker money.  Even a few dollars can be an impediment to keep out the casual but curious person.

Not one of those links was able to give me information on any of the number I submitted.

I'm surprised, but a little relieved.  I was concerned with how much information I could find with the numbers I tried.

No problem.  Thanks to Linkman and my compulsive nature to bookmark every site that looks useful, all it took was a quick search for "phone lookup"  8)

Well, yes.  But my question was the kindle apps.  You know, for the PC, iPhone, Android... do they have the same sort of hooks in there?  Is it the Kindle as an e-book platform, or the Kindle as a hardware platform?

That I don't know.

Remote deletion already happened on the Kindle.  Here's the NY Times article about it: Amazon Erases Orwell Books From Kindle

Damnit ...I had to watch that whole video, just to find out what color the freaking crayon was.

I didn't think I'd need to say the answer since Harold and the Purple Crayon was a staple of my childhood.  My children have read the books numerous times too.  My apologies :)

62
The article from January made it sound like Watson demolished them, but that's not the case.  Ken and Watson were tied at $3400 and the question was Harold and the blank crayon.  Any child knows the answer, but Watson buzzed in first and got the $1000, making it seem like he had won handily.  It was more of a win for Watson's buzzing mechanism than anything else.  People want to claim that AI has evolved beyond humanity's powers, but it's still a stretch.

I'm still curious to see what happens in the show :)

Great, let me know how it works out.  :Thmbsup:

I used to use XMarks to sync bookmarks across browsers, but it didn't sync custom search engines and it didn't support all the browsers and OSes I used.  superboyac convinced me to use Linkman for all my regular bookmarks (the free license through DonationCoder helped too), leaving only the custom searches that wouldn't sync.  I looked for a service like yubnub.org that could be personalized, but never found one.  My temporary solution became more and more useful so I decided to start making it into a real service.

Screenshot - 1_31_11 Mon , 2_17_50 PM.png

It's called Shortmarks (Shortcuts + Bookmarks) and is aimed at someone using bookmark shortcuts and search engines on multiple browsers or machines.  You set Shortmarks as the default search engine in your browser(s), then add your shortcuts/search engines in Shortmarks.  You can then use those shortcuts from any browser that supports custom search engines (Firefox/IE/Chrome/Opera) on any machine/OS, and if you're not on one of your machines you can use the site directly.  It authenticates against your Google Account (I plan to add more account types in the future) and comes with a default set of searches that you can customize once you're logged in.

You can use a single keyword for both a direct link and a search, so you if you typed 'gp' it would go to Google Maps, but if you typed 'gp los angeles, ca' it would perform a search for los angeles, ca on Google Maps.  Another feature is the ability to search for one phrase on multiple sites.  After typing the phrase in the field at the top of the page, hit "Update search queries" to puts the phrase into each search engine link, so you can open several in tabs.  It just occurred to me as I was writing this that I could use FARR to launch Shortmarks searches too.  I'll have to look into that.

Anyway, the site is: http://shortmarks.com/s.php and I've written up some basic instructions to add it to your browser (with screenshots from ScreenshotCaptor of course)

I feel that the main barrier is ease of use.  If I were to set it up for someone, I think they would see its value, but it's not too easy to get started.  My goal is to make it easy enough for less technical folks to use it without assistance.

It's still in development but I've been using it for a few months and I love not having to sync anymore, and being able to open any browser on any machine (even my iPod) and having all the same shortcuts and search engines.

I'm curious to hear feedback.  If I'm the only one who finds it useful, I'd rather know that before I devote a lot of time to it.

Thanks in advance.

These are great.  My all time favorite is the Three Wolf Moon t-shirt with 1878 hilarious reviews.

Three cheers for FARR  :up: :up: :up:

I started out with Launchy, then learned about FARR and that it didn't need to re-index whenever a new app was installed.  I've been a die-hard FARR fan ever since.

App,

Thanks for all the helpful contributions you've made on this forum and for writing useful software.  Seeing what you had done helped inspire me to get off my butt and create some of my own.  I hope you're able to find something that provides you with the income you need and the enjoyment you deserve.

70
Great, I look forward to what you come up with :)

71
Thanks! I'm considering below features:

1) click or double-click an item to enter editing mode;
2) select one or more lines, then copy/cut/paste/delete/hide;
3) sort lines alphabetically, or by text-length, or else;
4) export matched/unmatched lines to a new file;
5) state/stats/summary info for the status bar.

Any ideas?

Those sound great.  Having keyboard shortcuts for those features would be a great addition.  I use Checkvist.com for list management and their shortcuts are very intuitive http://checkvist.com/auth/help#keyboard

72
Depending on how much editing is allowed, this could evolve into the app I've been looking for.  I'll keep an eye on it.  Keep up the good work :)

73
Great app.  If it's alpha, I'm guessing you're aware that nothing happens when you select Tools -> Options?

I've been looking for an app to manage lists, and live search is an essential feature.  Any plans to add more list-management features to this app (moving items around, editing them, etc)?

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Bvckup
« on: October 16, 2010, 11:08 AM »
@apankrat "Across remote machines" - do you mean that you would have a UI here, but the actual backup process will run over there? If so, then this is very closely related to running Bvckup as a service. Latter requires splitting Bvckup into the UI process and the engine process (service), and making them talk to each other. Once the split is done (the hardest part), they can technically talk to each other over a TCP connection, so it should be simple to run the UI on a separate box.

However, see the quote in my reply to MerleOne above. There is a principal matter of needlessly complicating the program to make it do something that is useful to a fraction of its user base.

I'm suggesting the ability to sync a folder on different machines that aren't (necessarily) on the same LAN.  For instance, I have 50GB of music on all my machines.  I use Microsoft's Live Sync on 4 different machines but it's going away soon and the next version isn't XP-compatible.

The current beta is portable... I installed it on my USB at my (very restrictive) work today without problems

Cool, thanks for the info.

I'd still prefer a zip instead of an installer so it wouldn't need to be installed at all, but at least it works from a USB drive.
