Living Room / Re: Nearly caught by spam.. [or 'Saved by Thunderbird']
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:15 PM »
That reminds me of this Phishing Test I took a while back.  I got a 10/10 on it, but from a quick search through my inbox, phishing emails can look more legitimate than the real thing.

I've never bothered to reply to banks' emails.  I tend to think they're not really listening to their customers, even though they want you to think they are.

My wife - who was an assistant manager for them at the time - told me later what a stink I made! Special training, etc. and a revamping of their "online presence".

That's awesome!  Who knew you had such power? :)

Sorry, but banks are basically stupid, simple animals who will violate any security parameter for the sake of cutting spending and making money!

Truer words were never spoken.  Banks often include links in the emails and can be very hard to distinguish from a phishing scam.  Two days ago I received an email from Discover Bank informing me that external bank accounts had been added.  I went to login (using my bookmark) and Firefox complained that while the page I was on was secure, the username and password were going to be transmitted in plain text.  This didn't make any sense, and after a few times of trying different ways to login, I gave up, never logging in because I didn't trust the site.

Yesterday I received this email.

You may have received an email indicating that you have successfully enabled one or more of your bank accounts for funds transfer service. Please disregard this e-mail as it was sent in error as part of the upgrade to our new Account Center. Please note that the Account Center is currently unavailable as we upgrade and will be available beginning Sunday, February 14. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

While I agree wholeheartedly with not clicking links in emails and being wary, in this case the email wasn't spam, it was legitimate.  I received the same one and the links were similar, but different.  If you look closely, you'll see the lid field has different values.  If you click on the links you'll also see they take you to different pages.

http://lfov.net/webr...8b-9ad4-0615c9ef55a1

lfov.net redirects to LoopFuse.net, a sales and marketing automation service.  These services allow the sender (in this case Syncplicity) to track what links were clicked along with other analytics.

You'll never go wrong if you manually type in the company's URL when you get an email, but in some cases (like the survey) the links are masked for the sake of email tracking.  The only way to the survey is through the tracked link.

If you don't rename Help1.chm then you can't see the help from within AngelWriter (it's hard coded to load Help.chm).

Angel Writer looks pretty good.  I'd never used it before but it appears lightweight and functional.  QJot is also a good alternative.

General Software Discussion / Re: Autohotkey question
« on: February 11, 2010, 04:11 PM »
Depending on the features of the scripts you want to combine and as long as you don't mind digging into the code, you could create a meta AutoHotKey script that includes the other scripts and exposes their functionality.  I've done that for some scripts and it works fine.

For example
Code: AutoIt [Select]
  1. #Include OtherScript.ahk

Living Room / Re: Essay - Blogging: a great pastime for the elderly

I have everyone on lists. It makes it much easier to handle a lot of people. Not everyone posts the same kind of content, so sorting them makes it easier to stick your mind in one topic mode, scan over the latest posts for that list, then switch to another topic of interest and scan that list, repeat.

That makes a lot of sense.  Thanks for the tip.

Twitter and Facebook updates are also much harder to keep up with than the occasional (even frequent) blog post.  I still don't get how people keep up with Twitter when they follow a few hundred people, or with the Facebook activity stream.  If I subscribe to a blog, I like to glance at every post.  There's no way to do that with Twitter (nor would I want to).

Session restore is much better than resumable.

I didn't know about about:sessionrestore either.  Cool!

136
That's a good question.  Resumable is the best I can think of, but it doesn't capture the idea of restoring the previous working state of the application.

I looked around on Free Thesaurus for a while but couldn't find anything better.

137
I have long wished for the ability to "reboot" the OS without having to close everything down.

I doubt we'll ever see that.  The reason rebooting is an effective solution for so many problems is precisely because it closes everything down.  However, as more applications enhance their resume-ability, combined with an app like Cache My Work, it won't matter.  You'll be able to reboot whenever you like without having to pay the price of restarting each app manually and re-opening the files again.

138
Exactly.  The first line of their documentation states:

CacheMyWork enables you to instruct Windows to re-launch specific applications the next time you login

139
Nope, it just relaunches the applications.  If the app doesn't have auto-restore functionality (e.g. Notepad), you'll have to open the files you were working on manually.

140
I hope this type of thing because incorporated into applications (support for restoring state -- e.g. open a file and position pointer to a particular location) and the os eventually.

I agree.  Apps like Firefox, Notepad++ and iDailyDiary that already do this are so much nicer to use.

I tried Cache My Work and SmartClose, but ended up writing a short AutoHotKey script to launch the set of apps I usually have open at work.  It's easy to modify and FARR makes it a snap to run.

Living Room / Re: Best trackball?
« on: January 28, 2010, 12:15 PM »
The best left-handed trackball I know of is the Marble Mouse.  When mine died I tried a Kensington Expert Mouse Trackball to replace it, but it was pricey and didn't work as well as I'd hoped.  I returned it and got a Trackman wheel because I wanted a scroll wheel.

Even though I'm left handed, I was able to adjust to a right-handed trackball without too much difficulty.  You may want to try switching.  It gives you a lot more options.

142
I was going to post a link to what I wrote on my blog about that issue, but yksyks beat me to it.

Thanks yksyks  ;D

143
@mouser: I just upgraded, but so far I haven't seen that problem.  The new release seems more responsive generally, which is great.

I'll update this thread if I run into the issue, but I think it's resolved.

Thanks for great work on this!

144
I saw that thread and thought this was different because the freezes last so much longer than 5 seconds (about 4 minutes on the last one I timed).  My .ini file is only 10KB too, but I'll gladly test out the fix when it's ready!

One more observation.  After I disabled ThreatFire, FARR began cranking on the disk.  I hadn't brought it up or launched any apps but it ran for about 30-45 seconds full speed on the disk, then stopped.  After that, even with ThreatFire enabled, I haven't gotten the hang again.  I did notice a very slight delay on closing (I'm assuming it was the sixth time and the .ini file was being backed up).

My theory is that ThreatFire was keeping FARR from doing some background processing, but I could be way off.

Thanks for the quick reply.

145
After upgrading to 2.07.01, FARR regularly (several times a day) hangs just after I launch an application, or when I'm closing the options dialog.  I'd estimate it's once every 5-10 times.  There's still activity going on when it's unresponsive - both disk I/O and CPU, but they're minimal.

My machine is an Athlon 64 3800+ with 2GB of RAM running XP professional SP3.  I had Comodo Firewall so after reading the other thread where that seemed to be causing the problem I disabled it, but I'm still seeing this issue.

I installed ThreatFire recently.  That may be causing problems so I've disabled it for the moment to see if the issues with FARR clear up.

Any other information I can provide to help track down the issue?

Here's a thread dump from procexp that I grabbed while it was unresponsive, if that's of any help.
