101  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: xls to png on: April 07, 2012, 08:15:39 AM
I should have added more to my post above but I was pressed for time.

Like x16wda says it is pretty convoluted with 2003. But since kalos mentioned using 2003 that is what I had found in an earlier time when I was trying to do the same. I'm also still running 2003 on one machine and didn't have 2007 yet on my other one. It is much easier now with 2007. My reference to maybe using a script or macro to make it easier should have said for the 2003 edition.

Another thought, is this something that could be accomplished using one of the free alternatives like LibreOffice? I don't have a copy installed, but if someone else does maybe they can answer.
102  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: xls to png on: April 06, 2012, 04:54:24 PM
This isn't a one-click solution but you can do the same thing in Excel 2003.

Found this on Bright Hub How to Save an Excel Object as an Image

The article gives a step by step for both 2007 and 2003. Maybe a macro/script could make it one step??

Hi Tranglos,

I went to both your new and old sites and noticed Ethervane Radio isn't shown on either. Do you have any further updates/features planned? Not being pushy, just wondering?

Also, one of the links in your initial post is 404'ing.
Links copied from your original post:
This one works ok. Brings up a download file dialog.
http://www.tranglos.com/free/files/EthervaneRadio.zip

This one comes back with the 404:
http://www.ethervane.com/files/EthervaneRadio.zip

I am running v 0.2.4.42. Is this the current one available?  Latest shown in the 1st post just has 0.2.4 and Feb 28 with no year.

It is working fine except for occasionally not being able to connect to a station that comes up in the search.  Luckily for me most of the ones I like ARE connecting.

Thanks fot the great program.

Thanks for the heads up and taking the time to check this out and post about it. I am trying to stay away from keeping it "in the cloud" as much as I can anyway. Still good information to have available.
105  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Using Ctrl+C to Copy to Clipboard on: March 21, 2012, 10:03:24 AM
 Thmbsup
My focus was on SCC and not CH+S.  embarassed  My maximum area was 1000 (default?). Changed to 6000 and it's back working like a charm for images.
Ctrl+C in thumbnail (screenshot panel) copies the file so I can paste in a different location/folder/etc.  Got it.
All I'd like now is a hotkey to copy the file path. Till then I'll keep using the right-click copy path name with the mouse.

Edit:
I knew about the hotkeys tab.  I should have worded it differently. I meant how do I get the keystrokes in there.  Figured it out.
Put cursor in the line after "None" then start with (press) Ctrl or Alt and the other keys you want to assign to it. "None" is replaced with the keys. Got it.
106  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Using Ctrl+C to Copy to Clipboard on: March 21, 2012, 09:25:51 AM
Thanks mouser.  I understand what you mean. Ends up that neither way is working for me right now. Ctrl+C or via the menus sending anything to CH+S. wallbash
Could be I have something else running in my tray competing for the hotkey.  I'll have to work with it later & try and figure it out.

On a different topic. Are there any instructions on how to add custom hotkeys? I see in the latest ver you've already set DirectX Capture to Ctrl + Shift + Alt + X. I went through the videos, they're mentioned, but that's all I found. And help just says they can be set.

Thanks,
Bob
107  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: RightNote Ver 2.4.1 Is Out on: March 21, 2012, 08:20:01 AM
I just checked RightNote's site to see whether they have started a forum.

You're not the only one who does that.

I really wish they could somehow get a forum set up. Never having done one I don't know what all is involved, but have to feel it is an undertaking. At the same time though, it could help boost visibility, customer base and support. I dropped an email question to their support back on 3/7 and haven't heard anything back yet.
108  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / RightNote Ver 2.4.1 Is Out on: March 20, 2012, 09:54:14 PM
I just checked RightNote's site to see whether they have started a forum. No forum yet but did notice they released version 2.4.1 today. I don't know, or was able to find on the site, what's in the release.   I won't be able to update until tomorrow but thought I'd pass this on for those that can sooner.

Edit: Didn't see it at first... Here they are

RightNote Release History

20 March 2012, version 2.4.1

- Add import option for rtf files (Options->Import)
- Some small fixes

19 March 2012, version 2.4.0

- New feature: Import folder recursively (See File->Import)
- New feature: Import Scrapbook archive (pro version)
- New feature: Export styles (for note captions in merged/printed document)
- Added help topic: Tools->Export Styles. (Updated topic: Import/Export->Importing)
- Add option to "preserve tree" layout when exporting notes
- Add option to export RichView notes/merged file as .doc or .docx
- Fix: indexing of PDF's could index wrong file if importing a large list of pdf files
- Fix: Drag-drop in tree did not work for drop as sibling
- Some other fixes
109  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Using Ctrl+C to Copy to Clipboard on: March 20, 2012, 03:42:46 PM
I've noticed that Ctrl+C doesn't seem to be working to copy a previously taken screenshot to the clipboard.  Not a new one but an old one.
I have options set to send a new shot to the clipboard and it works fine.  It is later when I want to go back and copy a previously taken shot.
I highlight an old shot in the screenshot panel with my mouse or keyboard. If I use Ctrl+C nothing happens. But if I use Edit>Copy Image/Object to Clipboard (Ctrl+C) and click with the mouse it's copied fine. I'm sending it to CH&S and I hear the "waterdrop" sound saying it's copied plus I check and it's there.

Have I missed a setting?

It's fun to go back and look at old computer & electronics magazine articles just to see how things have changed over time. I kept some from the '70s and it's amazing.

No one has said it yet though, I'd be careful what you put on-line.  Especially if any of it is copyrighted.  While your intentions are good, too many people today try to make money the "new-fashioned" way... litigation and lawsuits.
Just a thought.

114  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Excel and third-party clipboard managers on: March 08, 2012, 02:00:00 PM
After never having a problem over the years I've only just started seeing a "cannot empty clipboard" (or to that effect) with Excel 2003 during the past week or so.  Like you I've searched and did come up with the following forums addressing the issue.  You may have already seen them but here are the links anyway.

From Microsoft Answers
On Mr. Excel forum
Online Tech Tips
Online Tech Tips provides a number of things to try.

What was brought up in a couple of them is some other process hanging on to the clipboard.  Recently I've been running Clipboard Help+Spell, Ethervane Echo and Screenshot Captor at the same time. And it's since I've been running all three that I've seen the error.  So maybe it has to do with running all three at the same time. Or maybe even some other program. I did install some others during that time also. I haven't had the time to try different combinations to figure it out.  I've just been hitting ok and moving on. Most of the articles do mention it will need to be a process of elimination to determine which other program is causing it.

115  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: DrawPlusX5 50% on BDJ on: March 08, 2012, 11:59:34 AM

Draw+ looks interesting and I downloaded the starter edition trial to take a look see. When I went to install I was asked is I wanted their toolbar that I declined.

[attachthumb=1]

I continued on, it did some un-packing and up popped this screen:

[attachthumb=2]

This is the 1st time ever I have had this happen when installing a program. I re-booted yesterday and I haven't installed anything since.
Any ideas on why this is happening? I've heard this is a quality product and don't want to be paranoid about it, just never had it happen before.  Anything else that could cause this?
I cancelled till I decide what to do.

Thanks
116  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Notes with dual ( X and Y axis ) user category tabs & other interface niceties on: March 08, 2012, 09:17:13 AM

Steven,

Quote
Right Note, for instance has a strong horizontal (x axis) implementation combined with an explorer tree on the y axis with multiple levels, I think.  This could be given an arbitrary tab-interface score of maybe 8.5 on a scale of 10, real solid and strong, not spectacular.
Quote
The reason this is helpful is that often your major categories, such as finances, web, spirit, software, etc could be the Y axis distinction, while the specific topics could be X axis,   Within the specific topics, then, the Explorer tree would only get moderately cluttered.  The whole purpose here is to keep a bit of top-down thinking so that the Explorer tree does not have to be frequently opened and closed and navigated to find the present topic.

I have only recently started using RightNote but so far it is able to do most everything I've needed or tried. Purchased it during the BDJ offer.
The X Y axis is present in RightNote, they are just opposite of your above quote.  Categories (Pages in RightNote) are the X and specific topics would be the Y (Explorer window.)  This better fits my usage and I guess thought process.
I also like that it allows me to choose the type "note" I prefer in each category. Each can be any or combination of Memo, RichEdit or RichView (still figuring out the differences of the two,) Source Code or Spreadsheet.
[attachthumb=1]

Quote
A major example -
** I would like my major colors right on the button bar, rather than a pull-down pallet and choice. **
Is this implemented here or there ?  A note is much more usable if you can color-code on the fly, very simply.
Unfortunately I haven't found a single button method but it is still relatively easy to change the color through the right-click context menu.  Plus through the context menu a different icon can be added to each note, child or sibling.

Quote
Another big issue is an active user forum, a rarity in the Note field.  Worthy of discussion, too, as it has a lot to do with where we settle.  Right Note is considered excellent despite this lack, but it should be noted.  The developers should be encouraged on this, even if it is done by a Yahoogroups or Googlegroups type of forum, or even attempted by letting Donationcoder or another forum host.  (Wilder's does this a lot with security software, quite successfully.)
It's also unfortunate RightNote doesn't have a forum for sharing of information... yet.  I am hopeful it is only a yet and one will be started. I saw that you posted regarding this on BDJ.
I'm not sure how their support by email is doing so far.  I sent a question and haven't heard back yet.  Being fair, it's only been ~18 hours since it was sent.

118  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Found an Office Ribbon UI Editor on: March 06, 2012, 10:29:48 AM

I came across an Office Ribbon Editor I haven't seen discussed here yet.  Or mentioned after a couple of searches.

Simply called Office Ribbon Editor by LeafCreations

Short quote from the main page:
Quote
About Office Ribbon Editor

Office Ribbon Editor's main focus is on editing the RibbonUI for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The reason behind this decision lies on the fact that the ribbonUI is managed with XML. Office Ribbon Editor is a feature rich application that includes such features as:

Creating Office 2007 and 2010 documents without the requirement of having Office actually installed.
    Syntax highlighting and Autocomplete capability.
Access to all Office 2007 and 2010 features from the ribbon to the new Backstage feature found in Office 2010.

Since there's been a few discussions here about the MS Ribbon it might be of interest.
I am mostly still in the dark ages and using Office 2003 so I haven't tried it.

Standard disclaimer... I am not affiliated with the program or developer in any way.
119  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Android Tablets on: March 03, 2012, 06:33:54 PM
In addition to looking at the processor etc. one suggestion that is a recurring theme on some of the tablet related forums I've visited is to pick your apps 1st.  The tablet can be the fastest and prettiest one out there but if it doesn't do what you want it doesn't make a difference.
Just an observation.

There was a similar request a while back by another member for something like this.
tellme I think that might have been me.

Request / idea was to show a list of shortcuts overlaid on the desktop (to one side) related to the current focused app.
New app => new list.

IDEA ~ Show List of Shortcuts overlaid on Desktop

Yep, yours was the one. I like your idea and have been watching out in my "travels" to different sites for something like it. I even thought about trying a wallpaper changer but that seemed more of a hassle than a solution.  I like Ian's solution. I'll just have to learn a bit about AHK. Which definitely isn't a bad thing.
121  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 7 hotkeys reminder popup - AutoHotkey script on: February 29, 2012, 06:56:41 AM
Ian,
Thank you for this. I have been meaning to try and learn some about AHK but haven't so far. Your script is helpful for Win7.  if I wanted to do similar for a different program could I just replace your hotkeys text with something else using an editor and run it in AHK?

There was a similar request a while back by another member for something like this.
122  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Does this exist? on: February 27, 2012, 04:21:09 PM
I looked for something similar to what you describe a while back but didn't need portable or the free form and used Clarify.  I remembered seeing two others in my journey but didn't try.  I found my old notes.

Hypernotes
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hypernotes/
Hard to tell if this is still in development since the last update was 5-2-2011 and it's alpha.  But from the one screenshot they show it looks interesting and kind of onenote looking.

Freeplane
This one looks interesting too and according to one of the posts in their forum I think it may be portable. Freeplane also has a fairly active forum http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/freeplane/viewforum.php?f=1
They may have some suggestions.

http://freeplane.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
From the web page:
Why Freeplane?
Freeplane aims for maximum ease and speed of use. Occupying the middle ground between an editor and a diagramming tool, Freeplane allows the user to add content as quickly and naturally as they would in a text editor, yet producing structured content that can be manipulated as easily as a diagram"

Not sure if it takes screenshots but might be able to use it along side Mouser's Screenshot Captor since it can be portable.

It was also mentioned once in this old DonationCoder thread on mindmap programs:  http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=5801.msg40627#msg40627

Let us know how it goes and what you finally decide on.

123  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Does this exist? on: February 27, 2012, 08:50:10 AM
Here are two you might want to look at.

http://www.clarify-it.com/
Off their web site:
"A better way to work with screenshots
Capture, sequence and annotate screenshots to create documents that are a great alternative to screen recordings"

http://www.bluemangolearning.com/screensteps/
Off their web site:
"Creating documentation doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. ScreenSteps combines everything you need, screen capture, image editing and documentation authoring, allowing you to create better documentation in less time."

These are both by Blue Mango Learning but have separate web sites.  Both are paid apps. Clarify-it is a little less $$ and not as many features.  I have Clarify-it and it lets me take a screen shot and then add text.   And export as a PDF.

Edit:
Also take a look at their blog.  It's been a while since I have and they have some good info on creating manuals.
http://www.bluemangolearning.com/blog/

I'm all about companies putting out GOOD manuals for their products.  I used to work with a gentleman that said "Manuals should be written like a 1st grade reader. This isn't meant as an insult to a person's education. Just that typically (and naturally) the person that writes the manual is the person that knows the MOST about that product.  And the one that in many cases reads it is the one that knows the LEAST about the product. It should be written with that person in mind."

125  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Today is Your Last Chance to Remove your Search History from Google's New Policy on: February 23, 2012, 07:20:20 AM
Let me ask if this could be the reason I didn't see the clear history choice?
Do they only collect history info when you are logged on to your Gmail account?
The only reason I have an account is it was required by Verizon when I had an Android phone.  The only time I log onto it is to see if I have any mail on the account or modify some contacts I keep there for my BB phone. And always log off when I'm done. I never search the web when logged in to my account.
